Agreed.  This 'mistake' is made in many fictional movie where they are in another world aside from earth.  It doesn't bug me that much, but I notice it every time and wonder why not just call it something else, preferably something that fits the lore of the world the movie/story is about?

I'm not sure what would be equal to hell in Star Wars though.  To say "I'll see you on the dark side" dosen't quite have the same meaning.

first thing i thought of was Deus Ex:Invisible war for some reason, not sure why...was there Holograms in that?,i can't remember it,so not sure why that game jumped out at me

EDIT:oh and i also thought of S1m0ne

DE:IW is the first thing that I thought of too.  There is a hologram pop sensation in that game that your can speak to at various locations, and I think you have to escort at one point (the real star-not the hologram).

That said, I think Call of Duty 2 had one of the lengthier campaigns in total, since you played as three different sides (U.S., British and Russian) and had a different mini-campaign for each. Individually, they probably weren't so long, but if you wanted to complete all 3 campaigns, it took quite a while. I lamented the loss of "save anywhere" but I mostly had a good time with it.

I won Call of Duty 2 in one sitting.

With 41000 post I doubt you ever leave your computer.  One sitting (+ a pair of Depends)could be 20 hours. icon_razz
51  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Trouble installing Borderlands (help please) on: May 30, 2010, 11:12:43 PM
Ok, thanks anyway.

This fixed it:

"Copy the contents of your DVD to your hard drive. We're going to install it from your hard drive now, but before we do, we need to make a change (something we couldn't do on the DVD.)

Go into the Prerequisites folder and delete the amdcpusetup.exe. Then make a copy of the vcredist_x86.exe and call that file 'amdcpusetup.exe'. Be careful not to just rename the original vcredist_x86.exe, but copy it first and then rename it. This way, the installer will think it is installing the amd drivers but will really just re-install the vcredist.

That is the exact message.  So its not checking(my bad), just trying to install a driver? wtf.

I've made a couple of attempts at installing this and each time the installer has gotten hung up while "checking for AMD driver update (if applicable)".  The computer goes silent (no disk spin or HD movement) and the progress bar stays empty.  I've left it for 30 minutes and come back without any change.  I have an AMD 4400+ dual core and am running Win 7 64.  Any suggestions?  I'll have to check again but I'm pretty sure I have all the drivers updated.

Also some people don't notice that there are scroll buttons on the resolution list in the game's options (they're the same color as everything else and kind of get lost in the background). You probably just needed to scroll down...

There wasn't in this version. There were only a very limited selection of resolutions available. Edit: Actually, now that I look more closely, I see them. I blame that on the clunky interface.

No popup, no. Doesn't happen with the Steam version, unless I activate it myself as mentioned. Found it though, but I think I need to upgrade my computer. Seriously sluggish with a bad framerate. Bad framerate is a killer. It's especially noticeable in cutscenes with lots happening.

Also make sure you don't have 'Power DVD' running in the background.  Its a DVD player program that some people have and it seems to interfere with ME1 causing horrible framerates.

I just bought this thanks to the Steam sale and holy cow what a deep game. I've just scratched the surface and have tons of learning to do but I can already sense there's a huge universe to get lost in. I always compare games of this type to my favorite game of all time, Starflight, and this seems to be a first person take on that experience. I just wish there were more hours in the day so I didn't have to think about, I dunno, feeding myself.

Also, I've done a tiny bit of trading. Is there anywhere in the UI that tells you how much you bought goods for or do I need to keep pen and paper next to the computer? Maybe I've been spoiled by Space Rangers, which is another beautiful game.

EDIT: So I've played a little more, buying a laser. I figured out how to install it but was getting frustrated because I couldn't figure out how the dickens to actually FIRE the darn thing. Turns out you can only fire it from the rear view because it's mounted on the rear of the ship. I only found this out after scouring the web for a long time. So it's not the most user friendly of games but barring too many more issues like this it may grow on me more. Looks like I won't be engaging in combat any time soon. How the hell would that work? Ah, so much to learn...

So its probably a turret.  You can set turrets to automatically fire at enemy ships by clicking the autpilot, and then command buttons for your ship.  Selecting commands for combat and then turrets controls will allow you to focus on combat using your 'Main' weapons (forward view) and the rear turret will go after anything behind you.

i finally caved and bought this on sale. i love me some space sims, but wtf. i feel like i need to learn another language lol. I found the terran conflict for dummy guide and will probably just follow that to start. from what i'm reading the fun in the game is building an empire and kicking ass while the story sorta sucks. which is fine, i just wanna blow shit up anyways in space.

Yeah, the story is weak but building your empire is fun.  I just outfitted two M2 destroyers, a missle frigate and have several squads of heavily trained marines to start capturing some of the larger battleships.  I took over a sector and made it my home with an equipment dock, missle and torpedo production facilities, a crystal fab and energycell hub, ore and silicone mines, plus an entire fleet of corvettes, small warships and fighters galore.

Its good to see such a strong community for this game.  Good space sims are few and far between these days.

I would've liked to see an Alien prequel that focused on someone discovering their homeworld and history.  Barring that, I would've liked to see a sequel dealing with Ripley's cat returning to earth in the late 70's via a wormhole and becoming the basis for Disney's The Cat from Outer Space.

I would pay one gold bar to see this.

Having recently watched The Book of Eli and The Road, I feel like I'm ready to jump into some post apocalyptic adventuring again.

I don't really want to play vanilla F3 again though.  I'm looking for good mods that make it harder to survive, more realistic (I guess) and just plain more interesting.

The original take was pretty good, but ammo was everywhere, weapons were easy to come by, and it just wasn't quite gritty enough.

I have the original game plus the first two expansions (no M-Ship Zeta Jones tho').

If anyone is even playing this anymore, I'd love to hear some good mod suggestions.

Looking good so far but I've noticed that weapons and armor tend to fall apart even quicker than in the first stalker installment.  Is this pretty much true or is it just that you start with crappy weapons?

FACEPALM> So I start up the pc today and click Steam>X3:Terran Conflict as I just DL'd it and wanted to test it.  Its starts fine, I played for a few minutes and then exit to adjust some graphics settings.  I click to launch X3 again and nothing happens.  I click HL2 and get the same error message as before.  Going from zero to livid in .2 seconds, I recheck all my settings for permissions.  All still the same.  It makes about as much sense as a Wookie on Endor.  Why did it work and then not?  BECAUSE IT WAS MY ANTIVIRUS ALL THE TIME!

I use Spyware Doctor w/Antivirus, something I purchased from PC Tools when a rogue antivirus murdered my last OS.

I restarted and clicked steam>x3 while while having Spyware Doctor open.  While SD was still booting all of its components, I was able to launch games through Steam. As soon as it was done booting, I couldn't launch a thing. With trip to PC Tools forums I found many people were having this issue and got a workaround until it can be fixed. Apparently a plugin for SD was killing the games as I tried to launch them and did not tell me what it was doing (why I never suspected).   Happens with Steam only.

Now it all makes sense why no one else seemed to have issue with clean install of Win7 running Steam. Still, thanks again for the help.

Got it working now.  For some reason Win7 creates two user accounts under your name.  One is Admin<user>  and one simply <user> .  I missed a set of permissions under <user> and apparently that was it.  It seems silly that I had to change them at all but whatever, live and learn.  Thanks for the help everyone.  Hopefully my other non steam games will install/load ok now.

Ok, I'll give that a shot.

So far Fallout 3 won't even install, it just hangs up during the 'installing windows live components' portion.
Mass Effect installs and the launcher screen comes up but when I hit 'Play' nothing happens.  This is after updating to 1.1 where I got an error reading 'could not update launcher' or something to that effect. icon_confused
Stalker Clear SKy installs but I get an 'Incompatable driver' message and when I go to launch the game it tells me that I need 'Admin Permissions'.  This is even after I turned off the UAC and rt clicked for 'Run as Admin'.

EDIT: I tried changing permissions to no effect.  Originally Owner read as SYSTEM so I changed that to ADmin(my name) and made sure permissions were at full control.
I did this with Stalker too and I'm still getting the 'Admin permissions required to launch this program for the first time' error.

EDIT EDIT:  I went and changed ownership of everything on every drive to my Admin Account and set permissions to full control for everyone everywhere and STILL nothing runs, Clear Sky asks for Admin permissions, HL2 doesn't run with same error...

I recently installed a new HD and Win7 Pro x64 as an upgrade. I'm now loading on all the games I'm still playing which includes loading Steam.

I have a 500G partition, that is solely for games, that I have Steam installed to (not the default C:\) and I simply left the default path except for changing the drive letter. I had to disable the UAC to allow Steam to install as I was getting a permissions error. Steam has installed ok and I have DL'd HL2.

When I try and launch HL2 I get this message:
Unable to load h:\program files(x86)\steam\steamapps\username\half-life2\bin\filesystem_steam.dll

I checked Steam support and found the message but Steams fix hasn't done anything to solve the problem.

Anyone encounter this before?
