121  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / (CCNA people) A good emulator for router config? on: March 06, 2008, 03:05:44 PM
I'm looking for a good emulation program to practice router and network configurations and commands.  I'm in Cisco semester 2 and we've starting configuring routers now but school access isn't always convenient for practice.  If I can find a good emulator program it would make remembering all this shit easier.  I think there is one on the Cisco site but apparently there are better.  Packet Trace was another one suggested to me.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Subnetting is fun.

That article is 16+ years old...

Wow.  The magazine form of that article was used by my grade 11 world religions teacher (14-ish years ago) to teach us about cults.  We also learned about David Koresh & Waco as well as the 'Anthill Kids'.

I mostly agree with you. But the biggest difference that I see with Scientology is that they require one to spend LARGE amounts of money to participate in their "religion", unlike Christianity, Judeism, etc, one can choose to donate to the church but they don't have to pay money to be a part of it. One can simply pick up a copy of the bible and read it and start attending church to become a christian.

Tithing's been a part of religious culture for a very long time - famously, many mormons pay 10% of their gross(!) income to the church.  Back when Christianity was being established, tithes were often required by law - in England, the practice effectively lasted until the 70s, while in other countries (Germany, Austria, etc) it's still in force today.  There are evangelical megachurches which apparently require adherents to sign membership "covenants" stating that they're willing to tithe a consistent percentage of their income.  One doesn't see churches lobbying for that practice of taxation to end, particularly when some Christian churches explicitly teach that not tithing can jeopardize your soul.  You might say "Go to another church", but that ignores that people are taught that particular faiths/denominations are the only way to eternal life, which effectively means that those people either pay up or, y'know, go to hell.

In the end, all of these groups are just trying to perpetuate themselves indefinitely through whatever means they see necessary.  Scientology has some ridiculous and distasteful practices, but in the context of history, there's not much difference with any of the other sects.  Islam actually comes out ahead in this comparison - one of the seven pillars of the religion is to give 2.5% to charity.  (Of course, as you might expect, it's mandatory in many Islamic states).

I'm not really debating Tithing. What I am syaing is wrong is the withholding of information unless you pay a certain amount to the "church". At least with Christianity one can easily pick up a bible and learn most of what they need to know (along with the testaments, etc.) In Scientology they activily keep things secret from members of the "church" until such time as they have paid a certain amount of money and have reached a certain level within the church (see pyramid scheme and brainwashing).

I'm not going to argue with you that other religions don't have their own faults and insane beliefs. Because they certainly do, it's just that Scientology seems to take it to a whole new level.

Isn't 'Dianetics' Scientology's version of a Bible?  They were selling those on the street in from of the CoS Toronto headquarters to anyone who was interested.

You'll have to register but it can be found here:

Also lots of other good texture mods there.

I think you can get Exnems at TES Nexus but its the OMOD version.  I also recommend getting some of the companion mods for Exnems as well as new armour meshes/textures(again, for Exnems).

I have the original GalCiv 2 and am looking for race/ship mods as well as any good gameplay mods that are for the original GalCiv2.  Most of the mods I've found so far only work if you have Dark Avatar.  I'm also looking for a good map creator/editor as well.  Any suggestions?  I'll probably get the expansions at some point but its not in the cards right now.

I have seen it at a couple of Targets in the $9.99 section a couple of times.  Was a month or two ago though, but worth a look maybe.

I'm in Canada so Targets are out unfortunately.  Buying isn't an option for me either at this time. icon_frown

OK.  I installed Startdock and updated to latest patch but original problem still exists.  It could be a display problem but my vid card drivers are at their latest.  Its not like its a particularly graphically demanding either.

The auto update from the splash screen you mean?  No, but it just brought me to the GalCiv2 sight anyway without automatically doing anything.  Is there something else that auto updates?
140  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Trouble getting Gal Civ 2 to run(fixed) on: December 31, 2007, 05:39:54 PM
Its been updated to v1.2.  It will load the splash screen but when you hit play, a black screen appears in the upper left corner of the monitor and then it just freezes.  WTF?  I'm using win Xp, & a 7800GTX w/latest drivers.

Any help?

"That's Cochrane, F.E., US Army."
"Cochrane, F.E. What's the "F.E." stand for?"
"Fuck Everybody."

I believe that would be Blue Thunder?  Good oldie.

I just finished season three tonight and have been glued to the compy screen for the last 6 hours watching the final episodes.

Is that it?  Is there a season four?  Please tell me there is (I have no cable, I snatch from the internet).

I assume by the end scene that Jack and Kate are in the future and have gotten off the island but have done it by leaving everyone else behind.  Jack is not taking it too well, and Kate is getting by.  I am already jonesing for another Lost fix and its only been an hour.  If there is more there is hope for me, but if not...

Sounds like there's some kind of auto-level compensation going on.  I'd go into the monitor options and turn off anything "auto" - auto color, auto level, noise reduction, black correction, etc.  See if that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I guess its just the way it is .  What a piece of $550 junk. Do not buy LG.  Fortunately, the purchaser is sending us the receipt.  It really is too bad.  It was really thoughtful of mum-in-law, but I just can't watch different shades of black and call it entertainment. icon_frown
146  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Annoying LCD LG tv picture problem on: December 10, 2007, 02:38:31 AM
After watching a few more movies, it seems to be the design.  The tv simply drops the light level during dark scenes, the result being almost total blackness on the screen.  I can't find any way to stop this.  What a stupid and obvious design flaw.

Screen goes light.  Screen goes dark.  Screen goes light.  Screen goes dark.  Screen goes light. Screen goes dark... retard retard retard
147  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Annoying LCD LG tv picture problem on: December 09, 2007, 12:13:53 AM
My wife and I just recieved an LG 20" LCD tv (#20LS7D) for a christmas gift to replace out aged 13" crt.  We set it up and threw in a movie (Man on Fire WS) to give it a test run.  Right away we realized that the picture is quite dark.  The LCD backlight was set to max and the screen brightness can really only be adjusted so far before it simply causes black to turn white. We could barely see anyones face -particularly Denzels- during most of the movie. Ok that is the first thing, and maybe it was just the movie.  What really got annoying however was during certain scenes that had lower light levels the whole screen would fluctuate between light levels, as if it was automatically changing power levels (low power adjust was set to 'off').  For example if it was night out and the scene was changing from a lit street to someone hiding in a dark alley, the tv would flick to an even darker setting in the alley until you couldn't see anything.  Even the menu screen would go darker when I had it open during these scenes.  I haven't found any settings that prevent this and the manual seems pretty usless for troubleshooting.

Anyone have on of these tvs or have come across a similar problem?  I've never experienced anything like this on my PC monitor(though its a Samsung bnot LG) an am not sure what to do. If its going to be doing this all the time I'd rather have the 13"crt.
