601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Who Knew?: Pokemon is Fun on: October 15, 2004, 02:49:29 PM
I'm 37.  A few weeks ago I talked one of my coworkers into getting LeafGreen while I got FireRed.  They turned out to be pretty fun, not just kiddie games after all.  We're having a good time comparing notes and strategies now.
602  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Any GG forum regulars that have not yet been spotted here? on: October 14, 2004, 03:02:24 AM
Hey Freyland, glad to see that you made it over here!

Raven VII, I'd be glad to participate in a new Contest (my budget would be really, really glad if I did) but won't be the one to start it or "run" it.  But after watching your participation this last year, I might as well just ask you now what game you want me to buy you for the next one slywink
603  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Any GG forum regulars that have not yet been spotted here? on: October 14, 2004, 01:08:07 AM
I didn't see angrycoder, freyland or dobberhd in the user list, so I sent them invitations to come on over.

605  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Circuit City Fall Console Game Sale on: October 13, 2004, 07:01:17 PM
Jeff Jones: you'll want to check whether that's the regular or GOTY version of Morrowind.  I think that it's the regular.

I second the motion to rename that site brokeassgamer.com.  I've found WAY too many good deals in the last year because of CAG.  The July CC sale was the best ever in my book, and because of CAG I got some great deals before anyone else knew about it.
606  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Day 4 without Pepsi... on: October 13, 2004, 05:08:44 PM
On April 8 I gave up all pop.  Cold turkey.  I had a headache for 2 days, but after that it went away.  I lost 6 pounds over the next week.

For the last few months I've been a casual drinker--I'll have a pop once or twice a week, but the addiction is gone.  Stick with it: you'll be glad that you did.
607  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Beer - best and worst? on: October 13, 2004, 12:57:09 AM
Best: Paulaner Salvator on tap at a little bar in Milwaukee called Gasthaus zur Krone.  Unfortunately the place doesn't exist anymore.

Also best: pretty much any beer from Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee.

Also also best: my own homebrewed Scotch ale.

Worst American: PBR and/or Bud.

Worst import: Moosehead.
608  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Non-gamers don't get gamers. on: October 12, 2004, 06:51:07 PM
Last week I bought Katamari Damacy.  My wife walked in while I was playing it and gave it the coveted "What the HELL are you playing?" award.  It's guaranteed to be a classic now.
609  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 RPG suggestions on: October 12, 2004, 03:49:36 AM
Wild Arms 3 is both fun and cheap.
610  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone else having problems with Gone Gold? on: October 08, 2004, 05:37:05 PM
Wow, I hope that all these rumors aren't true.  But my cynical side thinks that they may be.  I've been posting on GG since March '02 and would hate to see it go.
611  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Disappointing Star Ocean 3 review on: August 25, 2004, 12:09:06 PM
Considering the wide variety of tastes in console RPGs and their reviewers, the only way I'm going to know for sure is to try it myself.  But with so many other games sitting on the shelf, I'll wait until it's either on sale or the price has dropped.  For me there's really no such thing as a must-buy-first-day-RPG any more...until Dragon Warrior VIII, anyway.
612  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Bombastic (PS2) $4.99 at Circuit City on: August 03, 2004, 12:17:15 AM
It sounded like an interesting game, but not interesting enough to gamble $20 on.  At this price it's a no-brainer, for me at least.
613  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / BG&E for PS2 at Sam's Club on: August 03, 2004, 12:15:58 AM
I got this at the CC $4.99 sale and am really looking forward to playing it after hearing all the positive comparisons to Ico.  I loved Ico.
614  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How many finished games in the first half of this year? on: July 08, 2004, 04:52:35 AM
I've finished 3 so far this year.  That's 2 more than all of last year.
615  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Target: La Pucelle Tactics for $19.99 YMMV on: June 30, 2004, 07:16:41 PM
Cool--do I get a paycheck for doing your job? slywink
616  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Target: La Pucelle Tactics for $19.99 YMMV on: June 29, 2004, 01:42:33 PM
Spotted this one at cheapassgamer.com last night:  La Pucelle Tactics is $19.99 at some Target stores.  It may be marked down on the shelf tag or may not.  I printed out the barcode for it and scanned it in the store; sure enough, it was $19.99.  This was at Target on Alpine Ave. in Grand Rapids, MI.  Some stores apparently have the markdown and some don't, so YMMV.
617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What current consoles do you own? on: June 16, 2004, 01:29:39 AM
Two of the above: PS2 and GBA.
618  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Discussion: Front Mission 4 [PS2] on: June 04, 2004, 02:45:58 PM
Official Playstation Magazine gave it better marks--4 out of 5.  They made an important point: if you like this kind of game, you'll like FM4.  Seems kind of obvious, doesn't it?

I played the demo for a while, but can't see myself buying the game (at least until it's really cheap).  I'm not that far into FM3 and don't feel particularly driven to play for long periods of time.  The FM4 demo hasn't driven me either.
619  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden II on: May 20, 2004, 07:06:50 PM
You might check to see if you can find the first Suikoden.  It's fairly short and when you've finished you can import your saved game into Suikoden II for some extras.  The random encounter rate isn't too hateful.

I like the Wild Arms series.  The first is a fun little game but has far too many random encounters at some points.  However, you can get a spell (invisibility, I think) to avoid them.  Wild Arms 3 allows you to avoid random encounters to a point, and I think I've heard that Wild Arms 2 does as well.

Xenosaga is a fun game, and you can see the enemies on the screen.  You may not always be able to avoid them, but you can see them.
620  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Morrowind worth buying an Xbox for? on: May 12, 2004, 09:29:57 PM
Thanks for all the input, guys.  Since I already have Morrowind, Tribunal and a PC, I'm going to give it another try.  If some really good RPGs come out for the Xbox, I may have to reconsider.  For now, saving money == good.
621  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Morrowind worth buying an Xbox for? on: May 10, 2004, 02:46:51 AM
Hmmm, I may have to retry 800x600.

And kathode, it's partially your fault that I'm on this Morrowind kick
622  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Morrowind worth buying an Xbox for? on: May 10, 2004, 02:27:17 AM
Thanks for the input guys.  A few points of clarification:

1.  My GF3 card has a bad cooling fan, so I'm back to the GF2MX on my PC until the better card is repaired.

2.  Morrowind isn't the only game I'm interested in playing, but is the primary one.  The others are: Shenmue II (the Dreamcast version costs too much), KOTOR (I've heard good things about it) and Fable (if it turns out to be good).

3.  The only reason I'm considering this is that I have about $100 in Best Buy gift cards.  I figure that Sony will drop the PS2 to $130 at E3, so Microsoft will drop the Xbox to $100 to compensate     Or maybe not.

Andy, what resolution did you use when you ran it on your PC?  I might just need to turn down the resolution and play it for the game rather than the graphics.
623  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Morrowind worth buying an Xbox for? on: May 10, 2004, 01:47:06 AM
I want to love Morrowind.  I bought the PC version on release day.  When it ran poorly on my PC (800 MHz/GeForce 200MX) I bought a new video card (3TI200) and tried every performance improvement tip I could find, but finally gave up after a few hours when I got tired of the choppy graphics.

I've also been a long-time Xbox detractor: it has very few games I'd want to play.  However, one of those games is Morrowind, and I'm seriously tempted to get one primarily to play Morrowind.  It may be cheaper to do this than to upgrade my PC, which really doesn't need upgrading.  So, a few questions:

1.  I'd assume that the resolution is turned down to 640x480 or below in order to get any graphics performance at all.  Is it still a good game to play on the Xbox?  Is it choppy and/or a slideshow?

2.  Any gotchas with getting the GOTY version of Morrowind instead of the regular?

3.  Is it possible to get/play user mods with this version?

I'll leave it at that for now.  It's all strictly hypothetical at this point anyway.

Thanks!

625  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Boy Advance-Worth it? on: May 07, 2004, 06:50:45 PM
A year ago I won a GBASP with the Golden Sun games.  Golden Sun was fun for a few hours, but didn't hold my attention.

I do like my GBA, but don't play it very much: I'm a telecommuter and don't really find myself in situations where I'd use it (i.e. waiting in line, riding a bus, etc).  If I have a few minutes to kill during a dull meeting or waiting for programs to run, I fire up the PSOne instead.  Still, I do enjoy some of the GBA games and play them occasionally:
-- Advance Wars
-- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
-- the GBC Dragon Warrior games

If I had to choose between buying a GBA or a PSOne/LCD (a little bit more expensive), the PSOne would be the obvious choice.

However, I have a coworker who got a GBASP for Christmas and plays it quite a lot: it's his only non-PC gaming option, and he spends lots of time in the car waiting while his wife shops.  If I had a similar situation, I'd love my GBA a lot more too.

I definately like the break up of each system.

I like this too.  Maybe we can get some love for Sony again!
