1441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Research & Markets: PS3 Expected To Win Console War on: January 04, 2007, 12:34:43 AM

Quote from: JCC on January 03, 2007, 11:09:45 PM

I think Sony doesn't even care about the console war. I think they care only about the PS3 winning them the HD DVD format war, which they are losing hard now despite having much better studio support.

I don't know if they are losing hard, but in the end MS may have trumped them with HD-DVD - not that HD-DVD will win, but that xBox Live HD downloads and Cable/Satellite HD Video on Demand will win, in part due to confusion over which format to own.

From Variety:

Quote
In a topsy-turvy year for the digital download biz, a videogame service in just a few million homes is ending 2006 with more momentum than the world's biggest e-tailer.

The relative success of video downloads on Microsoft's Xbox Live and disappointment of Amazon.com's Unbox point to two factors that differentiate Xbox from Amazon and its many other competitors -- consumers who download a movie want a simple way to watch it on their TV, and those with high-def TVs want high-def content....

...The biggest surprise of the year, however, has been Microsoft offering movie rentals and TV downloads to the Xbox 360 via its Xbox Live Internet service.

Though there are fewer than 3.5 million 360s in the U.S. by last count, movies available from Warner and Paramount, as well as content from CBS and MTV on the TV side, are doing at least as well and, in some cases, better than on competing Web sites, which are available to anyone with a PC and high-speed Internet connection.

Xbox 360 owners are a tech-savvy and media-hungry bunch, of course, but the relatively strong start for video downloads on the console show that there is a market when watching a download is as easy as pushing a few buttons.

HD has proved particularly popular with Xbox 360 owners, many of whom already use the console to play vidgames in high-def.

For Warner, the only studio offering HD versions of its movies, consumers are consistently downloading more copies of a pic in high-def than in standard def when both are offered, even though it takes several extra hours to get the HD version.

The article goes on to say that the Poseidon Adventure remake which crashed and burned at the box office, has become is getting closer to profitable, in large part due to HD downloads on xBox Live.

Ha.  For me, it really is all about the fun.  I could have a PS3 if I wanted one, but with only 1 game out for it, I passed.

Yeah, I think this is the main problem with the PS3 - there's isn't really a killer app for it yet.  Resistance seems like the game to get, but as best I can tell, it's just another shooter.  I've heard some positives about motorstorm, but that's about it.  Most everything else is either a port or is getting meh in terms of publicity, AFAIK.  The biggest (current) killer app for the PS3 that I can see is the BR player, and most people aren't going to buy it for that.

Whereas with the Wii - the Wii itself (+ Wii Sports) is the killer app and you can get Zelda.  With the 360, Gears is doing the job, but there are a number of good games out there (when it came out the launch lineup buzz wasn't that great, but it was the first truly HD console, and that was fairly revolutionary, and the Arcade really helped it along.

Yup - these 2 will get some playtime for me, though I might need to buy a memory card to move my saves...

Did anyone ever answer my question about whether I can hook up either the PS3 or the 360 to one of the big dell monitors or not via DVI connection?

You'll need an HDMI-DVI cable for the PS3 (or the less efficient adapter), but other than that, no problem.  For the 360, you'll need to use the VGA connection

Won't the PS3 freak out if it can't form the 'relationship' with the TV?  Does that still work through DVI?

gellar

As long as the cable is of decent quality, the CP handshake should be seamless.  *Really* cheap knockoffs *may* have problems, as well as older spec DVI monitors, but I don't recall seeing anything about that.

Bear in mind that smartphones are eating into the PDA market, and Dell is getting out of the Axim market (hence the price drop).

jkontherun article

The Windows Mobile Pocket PCs available today look for the most part like your Dell of yesteryear.  Speaking of Dell, since they have killed off the Axim line there are no really cheap Pocket PCs likely to come along that are cheaper than you paid for your Dell.  Usually hardware gets cheaper over time but you are correct in your observation that apparently that's not true for Pocket PCs.

The other factor at play here is the sales numbers that show Phone Editions and Smartphones are passing the traditional PDA so OEMs are shifting in that direction.  These devices with integrated radios, often 3G, are more expensive to produce so the only way to get cheap hardware is to sign up for a data plan and get the Phone Edition subsidized.  Those that have no need for wireless connectivity are getting left in the dust.

Do you use any USB devices with it?

I seem to remember an odd bug related to a certain chipset and USB equipment draining laptop batteries in half the time.

That said.. what kind of videocard is in it? Is it the usual laptop onboard or is it a discrete solution? My E1705 with a 7900GS in it maxes out around 90 minutes even with all the power saving options turned on.
Its got the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M chipset and no, outside of occasionally using my wireless mouse, nothing USB is plugged up to it.

Wireless will effect your battery life too, whether wifi or bluetooth.  My tablet has a handy dandy button to disable/enable the wireless devices when not in use.  I can't say whether wireless activity would account for the short life.

Additionally, Centrino's (like the Dell) tend to be better on Battery life - here's a link to an older comparison - click the performance test results link for a popup with the results.  Other tests may vary, as it does appear as if your battery life is still low compared to that link...

Good luck!

Why reward a company financially for bad behavior?  It's not like there aren't any other games out there to play.
See, at this point, EA's business practices are like Peak Oil.  As much as we wring our hands and sob and oh so passionately demand on internet forums that we switch to ethanol engines, or not buy EA games, the fact of the matter is, EA, like fossil fuel usage, is completely unstoppable at this point.  A few hardcore gamers ignoring an EA release does nothing to their profitability.

Instead, it's better if we just buy the damn game if it's fun, just like buying the damn fossil fuel if we need to drive somewhere.  In both these situations, we are actually affecting positive change because we're doing our part to force both moments to a crisis -- oil depletion will finally light a fire under our asses to get some alternate fuel going, (or it'll just kill us all but oh well), and EA will continue doing shadier and shadier little tricks until someone sues their ass and they shape up (or they just go bankrupt but oh well).

No, that wasn't supposed to make any sense.

Unfortunately, Sony was able to brush their foul-up under the carpet with too much ease. EA's BS is here to stay.

1464  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Review Scores impact sales? Not really on: September 21, 2006, 02:30:15 AM
Studies like this are much more valuable if their methodology is examined rather than just their conclusions.

Example - I would expect bad reviews to more severely impact something like Daikatana than Super Mario X, because it is far more likely that the shopper for Daikatana is buying it for him/herself, rather than for their kids, and since 40% of all gaming software is sold at Christmas time, this makes a big deal and will skew any study that doesn't account for it.

The thing about it is that after awhile the jackass crowd will have gotten themselves dinged via account feedback and it, in theory, will go away after awhile.  I'm holding off for now, but I fully expect to see camera-specific account feedback options.

Maybe its cuz I am older, but I don't feel the need to share my face with the rest of the XBL community.

Oh, I fully agree on this point, though if the integration into games is good, it might be worthwhile.  I can also see the videophone usefullness - I already tend to talk more over XBL with my cousins in PA than I do over the phone.

I think Rolling Stone votes with tradition rather than purpose.  Seriously?  Bob Dylan is #1?  I can't find 10 people that listen to Bob Dylan. (or did in the past) He sounds like he's mildly retarded and sings through his nose.

If we are going by market impact and sales, the baseball "Hey" song would be up there, as would the Macarena.  Both songs suck, but people sure bought the hell out of them.

I suspect that has more to do with the title of the song.

And the fact that Bob Dylan is widely regarded as one of the greatest song writers around.  He may not be on the radio these days but he has made huge contributions to music.  Having said that, my Dad played his records all the time when I was a kid and I don't mind his music, but it isn't something that I listen to often (although I have friends that do).

And this makes it the greatest song of all time? Don't get me wrong, I have a few Dylan albums (and Highway 61 revisited is way up there) but I just don't see that as #1.

whiteboyskim, I may have a disagreement with you on how hamrful Sony's idiot talking heads have been.  I would bet a full 80% of the market for a new console this coming christmas are absolutely unaware of the horrible showing at E3, all the bullshit that Sony has been throwing around, or even that they are going to be charged an arm and a leg.  'Going down in flames' for a multi-billion dollar company over what is rampant hatred & disapproval from a bunch of pasty faced geeks is way too strong of wording.  The non-seeking of feedback from 'consumers' over E3 is a joke: E3 is just for geeks, and home consumer electronics is a MUCH more gigantic market than us.

Now, as for a very real possibility that this christmas Jane Consumer will be standing in a store, look at the PS3 at $600, and the Xbox for $350, I can't figure out how Sony doesn't realize that WILL kill them.  Perhaps brand loyalty is that strong in Japan.  Someone needs to point them to GM in the '70's.

3 more notes:

1. the geeks at E3 are what would be the early adopters, and the ones who would pre-order.  they are the initial evangelists.  A bad rep with them will harm their sales.

2. User education - which unit is joe consumer going to buy?  HDMI?  Bluetooth?  Blue-Ray?  Why do I need to know this for my kid to play games?  Does the unit include the $100 (retail) HDMI cable, or an HDMI-DVI adaptor, or Component HD as well?

3. It's all about the games.  Here is where Sony is stuck between a rock and a hard place.  Nintendo has already grabbed the pre-teen family market.  MS will have their second generation of games out, with a significant amount  of exclusive content (don't forget Live Arcade is also 'exclusive content') as well as an extremely significant price point differential.  And an HD-DVD addon.  All of which can probably be had in one bundle for less than the PS3 premium.  Early EA games (based on reports) are also going to be ports of 360 games, and even if they could look better, might not be for years, if ever.
