Is Sprint getting their act together though?  I've been a Nextel subscriber for about 10 years so far, and have been thinking about jumping ship.

I can see the point about Wi-fi - it did really eat my batteries on my Axim.  My friends Good/Motorola have been saying that the next Q might be worth looking at as well.

I guess another question I would have, is how well do these things take to being dropped?  Leather cases, etc probably aren't as good on the smartphones/multifunctions, are they?

Um you do know that Sprint bought Nextel right? So...you would be jumping onto the same ship....

Yes, I do know (which is why I mentioned it), but there have been a lot of articles about how Sprint has been dropping the ball - both on the merger and the move to the updated infrastructure required for 3G services, etc.  they may be more financial articles as compared to useability articles tho.

Yeah, I'm looking at you Gellar :-).

I've been keeping an eye on:

JKontheRun's Smartphones section

Wirelessinfo

Engadget Mobile

And, while there's good info there, it seems like too much work for not enough results.  I'm really looking at picking up a Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone in the next few months, and I want a good, high speed data plan (with wi-fi possibilities), pda-style office apps, decent battery life, and good phone features (touchy buttons/no-look dialing/answering is a must).  A decent camera would be nice too.  None of these sites seem to focus much on what you can actually get, and comparing features/plans across carriers.

I had hoped for 400 points for a 5-song set (kind of like the sets on easy), with the 5th effectively an encore that had to be unlocked by passing the others, and possibly partially secret (teh intarweb would tell you, if you looked for it).  At this rate, I'll likely wait, as it seems (and GH 1 people may need to chime in here) as if they are trying to fob off songs in bundles with 1 or maybe 2 good songs at most.

I think, by the by, that the big key that Cable/Satellite companies have over any competing products (Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, Apple TV, Xbox 360) is that their box is ALREADY THERE.  That's why it's interesting to me.  I, when I get home tonight, can watch an HD movie from Comcast without buying anything new, without hooking it up, and without even waiting for it to download.  That's friggin awesome.  I don't see how Apple TV and Xbox 360 can compete with that, since again, it's instant and I don't have to buy anything.

Assuming I already have an HD Cable, HDTV, a PS3 and an XBox 360, let's look at the costs of the technology:
PS3 - No additional cost, $30/movie, Netflix to Rent
HD-DVD - $200 for the add-on, $30/movie, Netflix to Rent
AppleTV - $300 for box, $20/movie (I think...?) to buy
XBox Live - $180 for the new HD, $20/movie (est) to buy, $6/movie to rent
Comcast HD - No additional cost, $6/movie to rent

So all that being said, the rental/non-permanent market I think will absolutely be dominated by the Cable companies (here in the states anyway).  I do think a lot of people will want to actually own the movies, however, so the other technologies will compete for that market.  At this point, I'd consider it a toss up on who will win.

gellar

Tivo has many of their boxes in place as well.  xBox live has the potential to use the computer drives to preload/load, though I'm not sure of how well the MCE connector streams (I haven't tried it).

One thing I've noticed, on my plasma the Live Marketplace HD movies look distinctly better - the colors are more vibrant and the image looks better than Comcast HD.  I've only watched a couple of PPV/On Demand HD movies on each, but each time the xBox looked better.  I suspect this is due to Comcast's compression, but I'm not 100% sure.  Either way, given the choice, I rent from the Marketplace.

Is the money really big though? Personally, its a huge gamble and one that I am not sure they are going to want to rush in the next two years.

Quick Googling yielded this for 2005

Quote
US consumers have spent almost $23 billion (£13 billion) in DVDs during the year 2005 according to the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG). Such figures consist of sales of DVDs for $16 billion (£9 billion) and $6.5 billion in rentals. The latter number represents a 14 percent increase, while the former is up 5 percent from 2004.

Yeah, 5-14% year to year increases on a base of $23 Billion is big enough.  Remember, they aren't going after the HDDVD/Blu-Ray money, they're going after the whole DVD pie.

The difference is that the bandwidth isn't keeping up, but the costs of infrastructure keep going up. Downloading say, 25GB, even over a 4 or 5 MB line, takes a LONG time, especially when you know you aren't gonna get maximum throughput. We're gonna need CONSISTENT and legitimate 10-15MB lines before this really takes off for HD content.

You seem to be MUCH more optimistic than the "insiders" are.

Not so much optimistic as confident that the hurdles will be overcome because there is so much money to be made.

Whether it's caching data or preloading data or simply getting people used to a delay (kind of like netflix), or even massive bandwidth infrastructure rollouts like Verizions FiOS, I think it will happen, in part due to consumer confusion about the competing technolgies, in part due to the added cost of HD discs (whether HDDVD or Blu-Ray), and in part due to the simple ease of use.

Example - I could see microsoft setting a download partition for downloaded media which is pre-seeded with most of what is necessary to make a movie ready for instant streaming /viewing and just preload the area for viewing, kind of like what is used for system recovery now.  Apple TV could do similar things by letting you sign up for stuff you'd be interested in when it is available, and have it be ready to view on your apple tv device the day of release.  Kind of like adding new movies which haven't been released on DVD to your netflix cue or to your Tivo wishlist.

The money is just too big for it not to get done.

Edit: regarding the worldwide debate, I'll throw out the idea that it doesn't matter.  The dominant format(s) will be decided by the US/Japan/Europe, in that order.  Coming back to money again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think the format war in the race to be the next DVD licensor is going to kill them both as it will delay enough purchases that downloadable HD content will win the day.

So you think in two years time or so, extremely high speed broadband and all the associated consumer hardware and infrastructure necessary to support that, will be in place? While I am optimistic that technology will be a player some day, there simply isn't the proliferation of broadband, nor is there fast enough broadband, to really make that an alternative, in the near future. Look at the 360's HD downloads, it takes 8 hrs or so to download a movie sometimes, which is way too long, and not something most people are going to want to sit and wait on. When you can download  a 2hr movie in HD in about an hour or so, then it will be huge.

Yes I do.  Don't forget that the cable companies are already doing it for selected titles with their ppv/on demand functions.  They now have DVR's which they could pre-populate with content, or pre-cache deliver to your Media Center PC/Apple TV/xBox 360.

Hell, even Steam could be used for this.

I have to admit, I have serious doubts about this game:

1. A lot of the talent that went into making GH great has left Harmonix, will the replacements be able to capture what made GH great?
2. This has to be fun single player first, and then multiplayer.  It doesn't sound as if single player has been thought through well. (based on the interviews).
3. The part of the interview that says "we'll be able to deliver great graphical enhancements" screams to me that they just don't get what makes GH great.
4. Playing this on EA's servers (ala NCAA football, Madden) gives me doubt about quality and longevity (what with EA's online availability sunset policies)

The people running this seem to think MORE = Better, which may not apply.

I hope I'm wrong, but this sounds like a disaster in the works, most especially if it ships this year.

Ars has a nice writeup of recent (positive) changes to the xBox 360's warranty:

Microsoft works on their replacement plan and warranty for the 360

Quote
There have been even more enhancements to the warranty and replacement methods for the system, and here's a quick rundown on the changes:

    * Free shipping. Microsoft will now send you a postage paid package so you can send your system to them at no charge.
    * If they system is fixed in that first year you get either the rest of the year or 90 days to get it fixed again, whichever is longer.
    * If the system can't be fixed you get your original system back. Was that ever an issue?
    * You'll have your system fixed and returned within 5 business days. Nice!
    * They're getting more technicians and training them better and blah blah blah. So apparently they'll have more people with better training.

Yup... AVG on my home computer has done far better than my workplace's Trend Micro OfficeScan.  As long as you have a modicum of common sense when it comes to security, there's no need to pay for your AV software.

FYI: AVG is concluding their free product and going pay.  Free AV software generally has some downsides that can be significant.  For example they simply don't have the laboratory to handle rapid response outbreaks, or the people to analyze large numbers of threats.  For example back when I was analyzing up to 200 viruses/trojans per day, often it would take AVG and Avast MONTHS to update them while companies like Kaspersky/NOD32/Avira would respond in MINUTES.  A buddy of mine that recently left Nod32 to work at F-Prot tells me that some AV companies have 6 year backlogs of submissions to go through.
