Yup... AVG on my home computer has done far better than my workplace's Trend Micro OfficeScan.  As long as you have a modicum of common sense when it comes to security, there's no need to pay for your AV software.

FYI: AVG is concluding their free product and going pay.  Free AV software generally has some downsides that can be significant.  For example they simply don't have the laboratory to handle rapid response outbreaks, or the people to analyze large numbers of threats.  For example back when I was analyzing up to 200 viruses/trojans per day, often it would take AVG and Avast MONTHS to update them while companies like Kaspersky/NOD32/Avira would respond in MINUTES.  A buddy of mine that recently left Nod32 to work at F-Prot tells me that some AV companies have 6 year backlogs of submissions to go through.

Click here;

Then on the right "Comparatives" and check the February 2007 On-Demand Comparative.  Stick to products that consistently produce "Advanced+" certifications.

An interesting site.  It could be improved with a little performance data as well.

In my experience, Norton has become serious bloatware since the Symantec purchase, and in recent years has shown a disturbing propensity do do nothing but slow your computer down.... a lot.  Uninstallation and cleanup also have proven to be extremely cumbersome to the user, to the point where even a pretty savvy user can't really uninstall even the trial versions bundled with some computers.

120 gig is still tiny,if this machine is to last another 3-4 years

Editors note blames that on babelfish problem:

(editor’s note: Babelfish translates ‘festplatter’ as ‘non removable disk’, but it should just read ‘hard disk’. there’s no indication that it’s non-detachable, nor would there be reason to)

It would likely be the same config as the Premium - removable (proprietary) 120 GB HD.

Series 3 is still lacking the much required ability to connect to other Tivo units in the household, correct?

If so, this would really make the Series 3 impossible for me to adopt, 90% of the time we're moving stuff between units and couldn't imagine not having this feature.

On the other hand, I've never done it ever.  *shrug*

Well if you had it, you'd do it.. I mean, if you got movies on the Tivo upstairs and have company over and want to watch them downstairs, how else do you get those movies down?  Seems like Tivo would be pretty damn gimp without the ability to move programs/shows between machines as desired.  I don't even think I'd buy it without this feature, I want my shit to follow me through the house wherever I happen to be that hour.

Yep... not to mention the ability to write it to my laptop and/or iPod for mobile viewing.  I get a lot of use out of the iPod video functionality when I go on trips.

That too, its a great feature, seriously.. Everything else I have seen is nothing more than a kludge.  I go downstairs, turn on the TV, browse my tivo to see what to watch, don't find anything, click twice, browse the Tivo upstairs, find something, hit a button and watch it downstairs.  Easy, brilliant, and seriously one of the coolest Tivo features.

Note that this is less of a problem with dual-tuners and a larger HD.  Will still come into play, but less of a problem.

The mobile/iPod piece is still troublesome.

Though I have no evidence to back this up.  I get the feeling that Sony's margin (or lack there of) is better on the 60gig version.  I certainly saw alot more 60gigs on the shelves at various retailers during my travels yesterday.  There must be some reason for that.

Oh, I don't think there is any doubt of that and all of the analysts predictions on cost of hardware back that up.  And if the 60 Gig version sells well that's fine.  But my gut feeling based on the buzz as well as the reports of PS3 availability in stores (just from personal experience every single store I've been in during the last week that sells consoles now has PS3s in stock) is that PS3 sales are going to tank starting in January.  If the PS3 lags behind where the 360 was during the comparable month last year then I think Sony has a problem on their hand and price is certainly a big factor.  While they may lose more money, pushing the $500 SKU might spur some additional sales and shore up the foundation a bit.

I think $600 is way too much too ask during first quarter when they coming out of a holiday season that was all abuzz about the Wii and not PS3.

Getting some exclusive games that look demonstrably better than the 360 would really help (if possible) .  They need a console seller or three, possibly desperately.  The fact that much of the launch lineup consists of meh games and 360 ports is really not helping at all.

I think Sony doesn't even care about the console war. I think they care only about the PS3 winning them the HD DVD format war, which they are losing hard now despite having much better studio support.

For what its worth, if I walk into any Circuit City or Best Buy in San Diego they have a large display of Blu-Ray movies, while they generally have at best only a handful of HD-DVD titles (some stores don't carry any).  Personally, the fact that HD-DVD movies are for the most part listing for the same price as normal DVDs (~$20) compared to the $35 being charged for Blu-Ray disks is a big factor for me right now...

From discussions with people I know that are higher up in Circuit City corporate, one nice thing about living in the same town as their corporate HQ(wish they could've gotten me a job), they effectively are partnered with Sony. Hence the larger Blu-Ray support, they were they main PS3 launch chain, while having a very weak Wii offering at launch. I don't know how well this has panned out for CC, but since they have a history of making bad decisions I don't expect them to make too many gains from this partnering.

They (Circuit City) put their weight hard behind DivX too - that didn't turn out too well...

Not quite.  The only mention I saw of Poseidon was that it's doing well on the download service.  Nothing about profitability.  It's pretty much impossible- Assuming that there are four million 360s in the US homes, if every single person downloaded the movie (not gonna happen), at six bucks a pop, that's only $24 million added to Poseidon's bottom line, ignoring MS's cut of those fees.  That's not even close to enough money to make up for how much Poseidon is in the red.  And realisticallly you're probably looking at more like 30% of 360 users downloading movies so it's really well under $10 million in additional revenue.

Yeah, you're right, I had read it into the first article I saw, and had had to google it into this article. Editing. nod

I don't know if they are losing hard, but in the end MS may have trumped them with HD-DVD - not that HD-DVD will win, but that xBox Live HD downloads and Cable/Satellite HD Video on Demand will win, in part due to confusion over which format to own.

From Variety:

In a topsy-turvy year for the digital download biz, a videogame service in just a few million homes is ending 2006 with more momentum than the world's biggest e-tailer.

The relative success of video downloads on Microsoft's Xbox Live and disappointment of's Unbox point to two factors that differentiate Xbox from Amazon and its many other competitors -- consumers who download a movie want a simple way to watch it on their TV, and those with high-def TVs want high-def content....

...The biggest surprise of the year, however, has been Microsoft offering movie rentals and TV downloads to the Xbox 360 via its Xbox Live Internet service.

Though there are fewer than 3.5 million 360s in the U.S. by last count, movies available from Warner and Paramount, as well as content from CBS and MTV on the TV side, are doing at least as well and, in some cases, better than on competing Web sites, which are available to anyone with a PC and high-speed Internet connection.

Xbox 360 owners are a tech-savvy and media-hungry bunch, of course, but the relatively strong start for video downloads on the console show that there is a market when watching a download is as easy as pushing a few buttons.

HD has proved particularly popular with Xbox 360 owners, many of whom already use the console to play vidgames in high-def.

For Warner, the only studio offering HD versions of its movies, consumers are consistently downloading more copies of a pic in high-def than in standard def when both are offered, even though it takes several extra hours to get the HD version.

The article goes on to say that the Poseidon Adventure remake which crashed and burned at the box office, has become is getting closer to profitable, in large part due to HD downloads on xBox Live.

Ha.  For me, it really is all about the fun.  I could have a PS3 if I wanted one, but with only 1 game out for it, I passed.

Yeah, I think this is the main problem with the PS3 - there's isn't really a killer app for it yet.  Resistance seems like the game to get, but as best I can tell, it's just another shooter.  I've heard some positives about motorstorm, but that's about it.  Most everything else is either a port or is getting meh in terms of publicity, AFAIK.  The biggest (current) killer app for the PS3 that I can see is the BR player, and most people aren't going to buy it for that.

Whereas with the Wii - the Wii itself (+ Wii Sports) is the killer app and you can get Zelda.  With the 360, Gears is doing the job, but there are a number of good games out there (when it came out the launch lineup buzz wasn't that great, but it was the first truly HD console, and that was fairly revolutionary, and the Arcade really helped it along.
