This is the first weekend in a while that I'll actually have some uninterrupted gaming time.  Of course, I'm sure I just jinxed myself...

This weekend will probably be all about Pillars of Eternity, now that it's patched.  Might get around to finally trying the FF XV demo if the mood strikes.  I'm sure there will be a bit of Final Fantasy Record Keeper (iOS) and Theatrhythm FF Curtain Call sprinkled in as well.

As per usual...I did none of the above.  Well, I played a little bit of Pillars of Eternity, but no more than an hour or so.  It really isn't grabbing me much.  I really like the story and the overall "feel" of the game, but I just don't have the patience to learn the intricacies of such a complex combat system.

I picked up War for the Overworld (the latest attempt at recreating Dungeon Keeper) and had an absolute blast with it.  The nostalgia is strong with that one.  I also gave Elder Scrolls Online another shot now that it's F2P, and once I got past the "it's just Skyrim with other people" feeling, I'm finding that I really quite enjoy it.  Played up to level 7, and loved the fact that I didn't have a single "kill 10 rats" or "fetch 3 doodads" quest.  Not sure if it'll have legs or not, but the beginning is certainly promising.

I did spend an hour or two with the FF XV demo as well.  Still trying to wrap my brain around an open-world FF game that isn't an MMO.  Feels like Dragon Age meets Skyrim by way of Japan.  Combat seems fun enough and it's certainly pretty, but I'm curious how well the story and characters will hold up.  I've learned not to put too much stock into JRPG demos, one way or the other.
Play on easy.

The NCAA tournament starts tomorrow as well, and we can't talk about it (not guessing it would get much traction here).  frown

Or you could just start talking about it here and see.   (not that I'll contribute, but other sports threads exist here despite me smile )

We've tried every year, and it typically only gets 2-3 responses.

Did our Fantasy draft last night - we went conservative this year - a couple of Kentucky players, a couple of Villanova players, etc.

You'll be pleased to know I picked UCLA to win their first round game.  smile

Thanks!  We got Loveridge on our team, so hopefully he doesn't just stand around.  AS I mentioned over @ OO, I think Utah can give Duke trouble if they (both) get that far.  As to UCLA & SMU, I think it will be one of the better 1st round games.  SMU has the bigs who may be able to give Parker trouble inside, but we have the length not to be intimidated by their bigs.  Plus Larry Brown vs. UCLA is always fun.  I think UCLA is one of the best 32 teams in the field, but I also think SMU is.  Either team is capable of going on a run.  We just missed out on getting Powell in our tourney with our pick at the end of the 9th round (of 10).  Thought about Paker and Alford, but held off and went in a different direction (Perkins of Villanova- avg's 6/game, but can shoot).

A few questions...
1) I plan on using a controller for games where it makes sense to do so.  Is the DS 4 the best option and is it easy to setup?
2) I plan on using Steam for the first time in years, advice?
3) for those games that are good with a controller, would hooking it up to my tv be a good idea (55 inch)?
That doesn't look like a sub-1k laptop. ..
Good point.  I decided to get what I want this time and hope it will last longer.  This came in at around $1,600 which seems like a really good price to me.
Wise decision IMHO. I greatly prefer laptops that will have a longer useful life,  my m11x is still going strong 5 years later.

The thing about the 49ers under the Yorks is that the Harbaugh hire is the anomaly.  Losing him seems to be business as usual, and is a major reason why we gave up our season tickets a few years ago.

Baalke actually hasn't done too bad of a job - eg the Kaepernick contract is nowhere near the albatross that the Cutler contract is, and the 49ers have generally stayed out of cap hell, but he has had some huge misses in the draft, likely in places where there was contention with Harbaugh.  The biggest to me was not resigning Delainie Walker and then passing on Coby Fleener in the draft for AJ Jenkins.  This move completely trashed Harbaugh's 2+ TE offense that took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and the offense never quite looked the same afterwards.  Whiffing on LaMichael James was another issue.

Of course, letting Harbaugh go will be the biggest.  They can't afford to get this wrong.  If they can't retain Fangio as well, I see a near future of mediocrity with a downward trend, ending with Baalke's firing.

49ers are officially done in my book.  Next year the 49ers will foolishly let Harbaugh leave and the 49ers will be back to being a 4-6 win team with a mediocre to horrible coach.  And the media/fans will be the ones to blame.

The owner is squarely to blame (with some credit to Trent Baalke). They don't like Harbaugh. It's insane.

Harbaugh didn't help himself by coaching like shit this year and standing by and/or not overuling Roman. Note it is Harbaugh that calls the plays into Kaepernick, not Roman... he could have fixed some of this.

That being said, firing Harbaugh because you don't like him and he had one down year is ludicrous, given a lack of better options. But thats exactly where we are going.

My biggest concern is my wallet: my tickets are harder to sell and the PSLs that are going to be more and more difficult to transfer if the team is fucking awful.
Yeah, we dumped the season tickets a few years ago. I was not going to pay a PSL on top of full price preseason games.

If they are dumb enough to get rid of Harbaugh, they had better keep Fangio.

How can you not solve only one side? If the rest of the sides are all solved (i.e., one color), than shouldn't the last side also be one color?

I simplified poorly.  One of the most common solving methods is to think of the cube as 3 layers.  You can get one layer right easy peasy, then the second layer with a bit of reasoning.  The 3rd layer can be solved quickly and easily if you memorize a handful of algorithms.

This.  I haven't touched one since high school, but I think muscle memory would get me through it.  Not sure though...

Should it stay or should it go? When it comes to Microsoft’s Xbox business, that recurring question continues to haunt Microsoft executives. Investors have been making the case for breaking off the company’s Xbox division for some time now, and Xbox gamers continue to become enraged whenever the idea is mentioned. Now, Microsoft co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates has weighed in.

Speaking with Fox Business Anchor Liz Claman, Gates said that he would definitely support spinning Microsoft’s Xbox business into a separate company in the event that new CEO Satya Nadella made the decision to do so. “I’m absolutely for it,” he said.

http://bgr.com/2014/05/06/xbox-division-sale-bill-gates-opinion/

If Xbox is even slightly profitable for Microsoft, what would be the sense of spinning it off into it's own company?
I've been pondering the same question the past 2 days.  I think a primary advantage of spinning Xbox off as a separate entity would be to remove it as a constant target and distraction for the board and key shareholders.  It's an easy, high profile target.  Get the board focused back on MS core business.

The downside would be that Xbox as a stand alone entity would be fully exposed without the insulation of the other MS divisions.  I think that's probably ok.  It might free the brand up to make better, consumer focused decisions without having to worry about having to seek approval from MS senior leadership.

If I were the CEO of Xbox, I'd want to get far away from the scrutiny of the current group of MS board members.  They're almost adversarial towards the Xbox brand.  MS senior leaders can do their best to act as a buffer, but board members can exert a lot of pressure and influence. Who would want to work in that environment?

I can't see spinning it off - in my mind,I see Kinect as part of Microsoft's next generation input tools.

doesn't seem too impressive, and half of them have already been announced or expected.

I'm real disappointed in this console generation.  I was ready to drop $400-$500 on a new console.  Something I never do.  I usually wait 2-3 years, because at the time I couldn't afford it.  This year, I was ready, and there's absolutely nothing to play.  Anything I want to play can be played on the PC.  The only thing I'm missing is MLB The Show 2014.  I held off during Christmas.  I thought maybe by June I'd get it.  Nope, still nothing.  I think both companies failed on their game lineups.  Not enough exclusive content as well.

I'm assuming uncharted 4 will be PS4 only?

Agreed.  No real tech reason to upgrade (no 4k tv, kinect 1.1 instead of a real 2.0 implementation, unfinished interfaces and features, etc.), and the game selection is pretty poor thus far ( mostly sequels from last generation).

I recommend against a 4GB card. Unless you're triple monitoring things your card will become outdated before you'll need the 4GB of memory. Get a 770 instead.

I'm one for whom 4GB was necessary.  Picked up a 30" 2560x1600 monitor and wanted to run a fully modded Skyrim on it.  Skyrim at high resolutions is very hungry for video card RAM...

Wifi analyzer works on an android device to show this kind of interference.  Not sure of comparable iOS app
