[ooo, what does this "tact" tag do?]
Starshifter, did you consider the possibility that you were the right person, and she was the wrong person? Mistakes happen; having a "soulmate" has more to do with MATE than with Soul. Every part of your existance has the possibility to heal. You have scars from everything... riding a bike, learning that the stove is HOT, not clearing the cabinet before trying to move it "just a bit", or having a 1800lb bull smash through your chest.

Your heart, your ability to love and enjoy that part of your life is critical to a complete healing. I don't think you're ready for it yet, however it's important to consider that at some point in your life that you just might want to feel that again, and with someone else. I'm not talking about misplacing your feelings for one and moving it to another; to honestly feel love for another. There is more than one beautiful sunset to see in life; they are all unique in their own way.

I find that I had shared your opinion at one point in my life, and then I realized I was standing on a pile of desolate ruin and only the sense of "right" was holding me there. It's truly not worth it.

Seek help, friend. You've not yet finished the mourning process of your relationship, and it sounds like you're hiding behind unreasonable ideals to justify it. Some people never move on; they tend to lose out on the vibrant colour and lustre that life has to offer (in that area of their life).

Seriously, see if your work offers an Employee Assistance Program or counselling. I see you in a Lego role. You know, where the world around you is modular and you can build anything out of it, but the man in that world is inflexible by design, and is always "out of sync" with the things around him.

</tact> [phew!! enough of THAT nonsense]

Kinda like a Keano Reeves performance. slywink

Starshifter, work on yourself. Work out, do stuff you enjoy. Get out and get sunlight. Drink a bit. Don't be afraid to cry, but don't cry because you are afraid. Develop friendships with people. Take a course on dating. (Re)-Learn to dance. If guilty feet have no rhythm, how can you expect a saddened heart to catch a beat? Your kids will feel it; it may even create stresses in their life. In Canada we have a program called "For the Sake of the Children" and it covers 8 hours of bad stuff and how to move on.

Frankly, I doubt she cares enough to justify you to be holding the broken pieces and clutching to the memories. Those memories are important, but not to her anymore. And to you, they're past. Present and Future are ahead of you, and let me tell ya, a warm inviting kiss from a beautiful woman is an easy way to realize you're missing out by standing on the sidelines.

You don't NEED a woman in your life, make no mistake. But the last one fucked you up enough to make you NOT want another one. Maybe you need to look at how you put her above you in importance, and regardless of how chivalrous or noble that may seem, and realize that doing so is a crock of shit. If you can't make yourself happy, you're not fulfulling anyone else, including partners, offspring, the family fearrats or the cute teller at the grocery store who always seems to glance at you once too often.

Happy is a state of mind; comprimising it means forgoeing it.
Healthy is simply the slowest rate at which someone can die.
"The One" isn't for you; it's a pipe dream. There is no ONE for you. Even if you have religious influences, you don't think that maybe this is a learning experience? If you can move past this pain, that growth is immeasurable. Some people never face that kind of emotional loss. Some people never give of themselves that deeply, and perhaps they might be right.

Just consider it. I'm not here preaching to you about this and saying "take my advice, I'm not using it anyways". I'm moving on. My relationship ended in a tapered spiral downwards. I ended it. I was tired of being the peacemaker, the facilitator, the one to try to bring affection into the home.

I've got plenty of time to grow cold when the heart stops pumping. Start with pounding the dirt *(see above)* and move from there.

I'd say good luck, but luck has nothing to do with deliberate healing.

Note to all others: any more of this, and we'll move it into a new thread. Sorry slywink

Exactly, Damage. Starshifter, don't give one person that much power to control you. You've got to put yourself first in your life; you may as well let yourself move on.

Being in a relationship is like riding a bike, except that there's no pedals to control pace, no handles to control direction, and no gearshifter to adjust effort required.    :?

Scratch that. It's like getting thrown from a frothing enraged bull with fetal alchohol syndrome. It's booze that got you the courage to get up there in the first place; now you can't reason with 'em, you can't calm 'em down, if they stomp your heart they'll fuck up your ribcage too ... and *ANY* guy will applaud you if can stay in the saddle longer than 7 seconds.

Yep. That's the analogy I was looking for. Face it, you're not getting out of this existence alive. Punch the dirt, stand up, brush yourself off and try to hide your limp as you walk away. Oh, and tip your hat to the Rodeo Clowns for keeping that psychotic b...ull off you.

<applause> . . . . </applause>

16777  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / HDTV buying help on: October 03, 2005, 04:48:47 AM
I'd stick with the 16:9 aspect personally ( it's what I have). As I see it, it's better to teach to the top 10% of the class.

all HD signal is 16:9 (or it's not truly a HD signal, such as some commercials). Any HD TV i've seen has the vertical gray bars available to show 4:3 aspect for your legacy stuff.

Given the size you're looking for I'd personally recommend LCD over CRT, Plasma and DLP... LCD is an awesome picture with the lowest risk burn-in, and DLPs often need "maintenance" (i.e. coughing up $400 every ~3 years for a new bulb). LCDs tend to climb in price when you go higher, but 34" and below is a wicked deal.

SOLDSmart-Joy Frag - 12US shipped - comes with instruction book, quick card, and the device itself. If you want I can bundle an el-cheapo mouse, no guarantees that it works though. I was using an Intellimouse Explorer with the USB -> PS2 converter. Worked like a charm; headshots galore.

I would.... the market footprint was tiny compared to today. Sega was with DC, and Nintendo was still sitting with cart games (ala N64). The PS1 came in and destroyed the 3do, and eventually the DC. Sony was catering to the older crowds, and I gotta say this one thing:

PS1 games were so easy to copy, and it was so prolific that people bought up the hardware. They got their footprint.

Guess what? MS got it the same way. MS-DOS and Windows (3.1, 9x, etc) were the MOST PIRATED software ever. If everyone is using it cuz they could get it cheap/free, your product becomes de facto standard (look at VHS licensing vs Sony BetaMax exclusivity).

There were questionable business ethics involved with MS at the time (and now for all the M$ bashers ), but facing facts : EVERY COMPANY has those same ethical "gaps". MS was just really *good* at it.

2001 - they come into a dominated market as a startup. Everything is ground up. They made decisions and lived by them. They changed controllers, fought suppliers and suffered from poor 1st and 2nd party game releases. They KNEW they were underdogs, but ultimately the gaming portion of MS needed to do this to stay alive in the software industry.

PC gaming is a niche market; MS is all about gathering the herds. Lets look at the Windows roadmap for example : Bringing all 3.1 users and NT 3.5.1 users together took almost 10 years.

They moved people to a common platform interface and let them get used to it. Windows 95 and NT 4 look the same, but under the hood they are VERY different beasts (the HAL, for instance). They released newer versions that moved them closer together, and finally with Windows 2000 they built the base for the same dev. track. Windows XP is 2000 under the hood, with incremental improvements. If you look back at it, that was strategy and calculated risks to change the computer world without losing your footing. They've calculated losses in doing the same for the gaming world. <shrug> MS is no more a monster than Sony is; they're doing what they can to bring forward their product into every household. Hell, even Crest and Colgate fight this one out.

Good luck.

One piece of advice: If they ask a situational questions (BDI)*, make sure you think about what they're looking for. Stories of super human strength are nice, but they're looking for thought pattern and a "well-adjusted" person. Don't miss the point of the question to tell a success story. It's ok to "think about" their question, or get them to repeat it. (just don't do it for every one, or take too long). They're asking you to think of an example; it's not unreasonable to "think" about it.

It goes towards showing your comfort level with pressure situations as well. Your ABILITY to answer the question properly goes a long way.

*BDI - behavioural determination interview style (AKA beedy eye)

I understand it takes money to make does Sony but people don't have a hard time seeing terrible things for them when they report losses.

The difference is this : MS stated 4 years ago that there will be projected losses in this field for up to 10 years. They want to be profitable by mid to end of the lifecycle of their second console. Their stockholders know this, and thusly no one is able to backlash and whine about losses.

It's different when Sony, being the retarded manufacturing monstrousity they are, hold onto the Trinitron factories long after their technology is available for other companies to use (patent related). A surge of chinese and korean mfgrs are making the same / better quality products at a severely reduced cost, and yet they don't sell/liquidate that part of their business. Before spiderman one was released, I recall reading an article where Sony was headed to "answering to their creditors". SCEA was making money hand over fist with PS2, but it doesn't help if you're carrying dead-weight.

MS had prepared stockholders, and stated they were committed to entering the global gaming market. Hold on, it's going to be bumpy for 5-10 years.

Nintendo makes money. That's a good thing. Are they the industry leader? No. Are they vying to be the leader? No, they just want to sell games and lead in innovation, turn a profit, and maybe show the world what gaming CAN be. (read: Fun)

One of the best commentaries on hollywood, which I feel applies to the gaming entertainment world too, came from Penn of Penn & Teller. He basically stated he wished the production companies were interested in making money. He goes on to explain that although money is important; they keep trying to find a "defining film" and blowing huge money on the potential 'next big thing'. Further to that point, he compares it to grocery shopping. The quote goes something like "If the stores stocked shelves on the same principle, the only thing you could buy would be Coke and Pepsi. Where is the avacado business in that?"

Nintendo is going for the Avacado market, and just might cut into Coke and Pepsi.

I don't own an Xbox so I wasn't aware they added analog triggers.  I thought it was just a smaller controller because they received so many complaints about the original controller's size?  If so, that's cool.  Are the triggers buttons that happen to be analog or actual analog triggers like the Dreamcast had?

Triggers. And the old controllers had them too.. I was referring to the fact that L2 and R2 are not actually triggers (hinges) but buttons. They wouldn't change that.

As a matter of fact, Sony shows counter-intuitive behaviour like not including a connector on their PSTwo to allow the hard disk to function with the new style system.

THAT is a piss-off.

4 years, billions of dollars of losses, and people are still playing the "oh it's all part of MS' plan to gain market/mind share, they'll make it all back someday, ITS AMAZING HOW FAR THEY'VE COME ALREADY" card.

You guys crack me up.

To sum it up : you gotta spend money to make money. They see digital entertainment as the new marketplace (and really, mainstream gaming is less than a decade old), so they're pulling out all the stops to get up-to-speed.

They would have wasted a f***load more money to buy a company such as Sega, Nintendo or Sony, and end up with less-than-guaranteed results.

They were willing, after 1 year on the market, to change their default controller based on market success. Do you think Sony would have done this to add analog triggers? MS is willing to try, to make mistakes to achieve non-conventional success.

As to the HDD SKU vs the 3Shitty, I am of the mind that they've made a huge mistake, however.... the price of a removable hard disk is this :

if your friend / family member has the hard disk at a different location, would you want to be able to still play your gaming library? Would you want your game system to be dependant on a removable device?

Like every 30 sec, theres a segway where Cage is in prison getting it up the ass, or eating dog shit, or being put through a series of unlikely embarassing moments. Maybe a mock wedding of him getting hitched to Roseanne with her saying something like "I swear, Nick! I *am* the lovechild of Elvis". I dunno, personally humiliating stuff. It's better that HE'S being humiliated, rather than the memory of Superman, and all the goodness Christopher Reeves brought to the role.

8 ) Dynasty Warriors 3,4,5 - Truly great games. It's nice to be able to build up characters, unlock more, and get a feel for the game characters and their interactions. 4 is, thus far, my favorite. I just got 5 last week.

3) Halo / Halo 2 - It's gotta be said. Sure, this tune is always on the radio, but I still own it and play it. Co-op storyline rawks.
2) Crimson Skies - A-frickin' mazing game. Loved the dogfighting, the exploration, the sandbox style. I want a Crimson Skies 360 game RFN.
1) Xbox Live - It costs as much as a game; I figure this service qualifies. This has brought so much to the game play of some of my favorite games, and turned other games into a shadow of what they COULD be. (Dynasty Warriors online would just kick so much ass).

If you move your character backwards, the animation doesn't change from walking forwards... that's right folks, we're talking about Moonwalking. Ah-hee-hee-hee <crotch-grab>.

The opening movie looks like it was made in 20 minutes from a reject.

The gameplay was automatic so you didn't have to, you know, DO anything. Also, the characters were so generic you wouldn't care if they die.

There was an anime fighting game for Xbox that came out, Stake: Fortune Fighters, it is an atrocious* game. The menu music would get stuck 50% of the time entering the game, and repeat a 2sec clip over and over. IIRC, 2 of the buttons didn't even work as the manual described.

  2) Exceptionally bad; abominable: atrocious decor; atrocious behavior.
