16405  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Canada hunters start killing seals, tempers flare on: March 26, 2006, 07:43:59 PM
They'd club cows too, but their skulls are two thick. They use a 3/4 inch bolt gun with a compressor, as they don't want bullets in the meat.

They club seals as it won't damage fur. This isn't new. Keeping them in zoos for people to point while they play in captivity is no better, IMHO.

Does this mean I don't eat meat, or go to the zoo? No. I'm human; being a hypocrite comes naturally. biggrin

I blame the Disney culture that has had such a profound effect on the north american belief system over the past 50 years. With all of our fairy tales that now have happy endings (EG: The Little Mermaid does NOT survive the story), and all of our non-agressive animals having big doe eyes makes for a poor perspective on life. Death is a part of life; it's the one thing that we ALL share in common.

16407  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Canada hunters start killing seals, tempers flare on: March 26, 2006, 03:35:55 PM
First of all, read the article :

At one point a hunter, frustrated at the activists' presence, picked up the bloody carcass of a skinned seal and threw it at a small inflatable craft full of protesters and journalists. It hit the boat and sank.

One sealing boat steamed straight toward the journalists' craft and turned at the last moment, sending a wave crashing over the observers.

Canada says the hunt gives the local economy a crucial boost and helps keep a harp seal population of almost six million animals in check.

Note how it's one hunter who does this, and then it becomes plural in everyone's interpretation. As if the protesters aren't TRYING to get them irate and do rash things.

Then they talk about international propaganda.

The fact is that if they're getting out of hand in population, they need to be kept in check. They are NOT an endangered species. If they continue to grow in population then the polar bears will also grow. Polar bears are considered the fiercest of land-based predators. They are one of the few bears who will kill humans without question.

As to the killing of seals and how it's done, we're talking about ice-flows folks... not some flowery field with bunnies and foxes drinking tea together and having these big ow baad hunters weckin a peaceful love-in. Of COURSE they've got to shoot from boats... or you know, SWIM in -20 degree water.

Do you think that the chicken you eat is treated ANY better? these animals have had their freedom for their entire lives. The food we eat is (generally) cooped in a 1 foot cube for its entire existance. I mean, when's the last time you had veal? How about a calf never seeing sunlight?

If there was a market for seal meat I'm sure we'd have a "humane" company like mcdonalds up there licketty-split to help the world.

Bon Apetit.

I. Don't. Belong. Here.

Please tell me you guys with backstories don't LARP. ninja

I need to go now... maybe wash the geek-smell off of me after just GLANCING in this thread. slywink

I am NOT a roleplayer it seems. Now my "Honey, you can come out of the bathroom now... I've got the batman suit on and I have the stick of butter!" seems so... tame by comparison.

So I've got a lvl2 redguard crusader with horse sign (I tend to run from things such as ogres, wolves, bandits, highwaymen, donkeys, waterfowl and halitosis). She's a little mannish and has a perpetual 5 o'clock shadow. It seems all female redguards do. I just couldn't go with the guy; he looked too much like an Amped3 extra. slywink

I tend to lull bandits into a false sense of security... I sneak and stick em with arrows for 1-2 hits (crit on first) and then as soon as they charge they get smacked around with a blunt 2h axe with poison. :: shrug ::

To clean this up, I'm looking for one thread. Since this game's got legs, I imagine it might be a good idea to sticky it.

So, anyone follow around the people the crazy guy in the town to the southwest of the capitol?

He hides behind the church, and you've got to follow around some woman who doesn't follow him. Then you tell him this at midnight, and he has you follow a second guy, but doesn't specify a time. Anyone know when the best time is to look for this guy?

Yeah, I know, I know. Could I BE anymore vague? [/chandler] I'm at work right now; the name escapes me.

16422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is the 360 worth buying? on: March 23, 2006, 09:22:40 PM
Even the meh ones are good, which is more than I can say for the PS2 / Xbox1 launch titles.

There are some terrific games man. Fight Night 3 has it's charm (but it ain't a 9.5 no matter what anyone says) Kameo is fun, PDZ is also a great game.

I'm even having fun with Amped 3 despite the extra layer of cheese and no live multiplayer... it's funny; the manual seems to indicate it was supposed to have it... I think it got dropped to be a release title which is really too bad.

Though the absence of kids does hurt this a bit and the male to female ratio seems over-skewed towards males.

Naw, it's just the Nords-women are very mannish. biggrin
I was attacked by a female bandit; I thought I was fighting a kid until I killed them and took their armor. The bra is a dead-givaway, or it was just a confused youth.

Oh, and my female redguard crusader needs make-up... in most lights she looks like she's got 5 o'clock shadow.

I went to the docks by the main town, and there was some dark elf proud of her ship. She warned me not to go near it. Yep. I went near it. Then I ran from her and her 3 crew-mates... headed south, and then west to the shoreline, and crossed back over to the other side.

I went back to the ship and they all left. (looking for me, presumably)

I swear officer, I have no IDEA where their stuff went. biggrin

Now, how do I swim? I tend to just go to the bottom of the lake, and walk back to shore.

Whose idiotic idea was it that everthing you salvage in the starter dungeon is "stolen goods"?  I decided to pay off my bounty so I could join the fighters guild and imagine my shock to find that after having everything I had "stolen" confiscated I didn't even any weapons or armor left?

So what counts as stolen then?  Are items looted from corpses that I didn't kill verbotin?  Is there no law of salvage in Tamriel?

That didn't happen to me....

Figured it out- I  took back  all of my gear from an evidence locker while breaking out of jail and *that's* what flagged everything I had (including legitimately procured items) as stolen.

Now THAT'S funny.. you steal state evidence and get charged for stolen goods. Sounds like an easy way to deter breakouts... both as an escapee and a thief for taking your own stuff. biggrin

Mounted Officer : "Son, watch your head"
<Officer takes thief around horse from behind>

You will have more on your three-sixty.

when you're at the dashboard, bring up the mini-dash with the X logo, and from there you can select prefs (or your gamertag, I don't remember) and select other images. You can also download images from Live as well.

Some games (like Perfect Dark Zero) offer extra gamerpics on the special edition disk.
16432  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Anyone want to add to an XBox 360 Live Tutorial? on: March 22, 2006, 05:49:34 PM
Yes there is... it's under the console gaming thread... it's been a while. I've got a jpn live account and a german one now. (I'm semi-fluent in german so that works out well for me).
Here's the juicy stuff:

First off you should go to the passport site : Make sure you are not logged in, and click on the "create hotmail account" link. Now, here is the important part, the site will ask you where you are from, select either Japan, the US, or Europe. Remember, this is the country where the demo is available, not where you really live! You will require some information regarding those countries so Microsoft will allow you ro register the e-mail address.

Here is the info we used:

United States
Postal Code: 10012
State: New York, City New York City
Phone Number: 1-866-530-1234

Postal Code: 150-2345
Province: Tokyo-to
Phone Number: 3201-3331

Postal Code: 54292
City: Trier
Phone Number: 065112345

You can use any valid address and phone number from the country where the demo is available.

Once you have filled out the info and applied for the Hotmail account, activate it and turn on your Xbox360. Press the guide button and choose "switch profile" (X Button). Now create a new profile, and a new Xbox Live Account, make it a Silver account instead of a Gold (so you dont have to pay). Next you will require the phone number mentioned above to use your passport. You could theoretically take care of all the passport stuff on the Xbox, but it will go much faster on PC with a keyboard.

Well, that is about it folks! Pretty sweet huh? The cool thing is that you can disable (they actually are disabled from the start if you have already a gold membership installed on your box) the auto sign for the foreign accounts, hence leaving your primary "Real" account hassle-free. Ejoy the demos!

*Update*: Apparently some of this info comes from
here, the reader who submitted it did not mention the source. This info has been floating around gaming forums for sometime, we figured it was time for a site-based tutorial.

There is a video demo of a new JPRG called Zaria that was posted 2 days ago.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

Your character class should be "Pack-Rat" born under the Scotsman star constellation. biggrin

When you pull up your B menu, you'll see a xxx/200 at the bottom... that's how much weight you can carry. The feather icon is the value for each... don't forget that multiples count... so if an Iron arrow weighs .1 and you have 80 of them, you're carring 8units of weight in arrows.

The Great mace weighs like, 30. But it's worth 60gp, so I'm staying right below encumbrance level and keeping the most valuable stuff (stuff that isn't a 1:1 ratio of gold / weight.

since I've not played much of morrowind (got bored right away) I have to say: This game is better than I expected.

The combat is fun, the quickslots are fairly intuitive and I've not even left the sewers yet (just got my class designation).

The movement and camera is excellent.

My only grip thus far is that there is no agility-like dodge. Not the end of the world, but I'd still like one.

if one is going to mount an argument (or provide a statement contrary to popular opinion) one needs to have source for that.

He hunted down examples and provided them. Those were then questioned (by KD no less). I for one can sometimes ignore, sometimes respect, and even *gasp* sometimes agree with LE.

He is a very intelligent poster; he sometimes lets his over-dramatic/critical/clinical self dominate in his posts and it comes across as very abrasive.

He's part of the GT family of posters, and like him or don't, he is welcome here just like everyone else unless he crosses the CoC. I had butted heads with him a few times in the past; as have most GT'ers. It's not a bad thing though, it keeps us in check. It sometimes helps to have a wildly negative person (read: wet blanket/sourpuss) to even the keel.

Cleric7 : while I understand your frustration with LE (and I was too on page 2) I don't think his acerbic comments are intended as malice to the readers. He's just a very jaded and bitter gamer, and places too much expectation into RPG games.
