In defense of Andrew, I've also seen that 10 million number for the PSP.  I believe they announced that last November or so.  In the US, the NPD numbers indicated only a small DS lead during the holidays - rather suprising when you consider the DS bundles and the large price difference.

Remember, they may have announced 10million SHIPPED, not sold. ... Nintendo tends to dump less spin into their mix. They don't need to, they're making.....

wait for it.....

MONEY!! biggrin

PSP is mehware right now. They need to get it to Wowware.
16403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 to launch in September? Plus PS3 online info. on: February 16, 2006, 08:07:36 PM
1) Given the developers may not have final dev kits yet, and since the architecture is VASTLY different than any other common programming platform (seven segmented processor cores), what makes you think they *aren't* working on beefed up ports? PS2 is apparently supported, they could release emotion engine code on this platform and you wouldn't know the difference. Do you really think -any- company can churn out must-have titles on an unfamiliar platform at the word GO ? FTR. Halo was in development long before the Xbox was dreamed up, and since it was just a beefier PC config there was less to worry about.

2) I *DON'T* think they have the specs nailed down yet; Sony dropped their 1080p support just recently. I'm waiting to see what other "features" are dropped quietly to bring down cost/dev time.

I don't think the piper is going to deliver all they promised; Sony's pre-release strategy reeks like a polititians election campaign. I'll pre-order, but that might just go up for auction if I can't justify the cost with the games that come out.

3) Kevin, I believe you are correct. The SKUs and the details were Aug 23 (IIRC) and late Sept was when the street date was released... the whole"they better release before black friday" threads are bouncing around in my mind.

4) PS3 Online strategy : Follow the leader, and claim yours is better. Even if it's not. It's not like Sony has ever built a successful Online community. MS platform has always been geared to Live, even in it's infancy. We'll see where Sony goes with this. I'm sure the basics will be there; I have my reservations about it being "better" than the Live experience.

And NO, PLAYONLINE is NOT a successful implementation. (I believe SOE had a hand in that one.) MS clearly has a stronger history and the established infrastructure.

DnD 2nd Ed. also used the term avatar in it's original meaning. Some spells could call down an Avatar IIRC, including stuff like divine intervention.

I don't know the history or DnD 1st Ed, or whether ShadowRun was first or not.

keep in mind, we're the niche... they're aiming at the general population and having names like that will bring games into the mainstream media.

Think about it, if movies and gaming produce equal respective amounts of revenue each year (in the billions).... movies cost 1/6 to 1/4 of the cost of gaming. That's a MUCH lower head count for gaming.

I would have to say that the first 20 min were slow... Red Riding hoods story is kind of lame on it's own; until she gets to the Goat it's not that funny.

Hers is the straight-man... it's the setup for the entire premise of the movie. The rest of it is tearing the story apart.
16409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FFXI beta - People were addicted to this? on: February 14, 2006, 11:21:43 PM
Also, once you have lvl20, subjob and the chocobo license, you can more easily ride to wherever you want to and level there. This makes it easier to farm for rare drops that help out, and it's likely you won't be struggling financially unless you're pursuing some sort of trade.

The subjob stats bonus, as well as additional abilities makes for an easier time. (using BLM as a secondary to boost mana as WELL as getting some low-level elemental spells etc..)

I highly recommend leveling THF as a second job, as steal makes it all worthwhile. Also, starting as a thf is a BITCH. >_<;;

Doh! you're right, it's BST, not RNG.

I never played either (although one of my buddies did).

I had all the jobs unlocked (Stabbetty on Phoenix server) I just never bothered. Once I had SAM and NIN, i didn't want to go back to anything else. biggrin

Whoa whoa whoa!! Were you the Stabbety from the WoW Alpha/Beta? or did you just copy and or randomly find that name from elsewhere???

ANSWER NOW!

I *AM* Stabbetty.

Always was, always will be.

I am Stabbetty on FFXI server Phoenix (first iteration) and then joined the WoW beta, and then moved onto WoW proper. (I was Stabbetty in the Almost Heroes Guild).

I made up the name... I was going to be a TaruTaru BLM (male) in tribute to Black Mage ( www.nuklearpower.com/ ) and go with the name Stabbitty (Stabbity-Death is a BM patented move from the comic), but was disappointed with the Taru model.

I then decided if I was going to sink hundreds of hours into this, perhaps I should be lookin' at a CUTE rear-end rather than a guys, so I went Mithra THF ... and eventually NIN / SAM.  Stabbitty looked funny, but StabbEtty looked right. It stuck. In WoW i was YANER (Yet Another Night Elf Rogue -female).

If you were brave, you could get at least 2 arms destroyed (and the 3rd badly injured) on the first dive. then hide behind a corner, collect some health, and repeat. Dead in 2 dives.

of course, I didn't kill him in 2 dives the first time around. it was 5 or 6, figuring out what to do.

Quote from: "depward"
I don't know.  Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but I dislike the idea of having "mainstream" people do voice work for FFVII Advent Children.  I don't want to be listening to Tifa and think, "Oh, that sounds like Jessica Alba . . ."  Then again, I guess I also don't want no-name people who would do a shoddy job.

Eh, I'm hard to please   biggrin   It was a cool movie!

+1 ... I found that the big-name talent in FF:spirits within detracted from the characters, given that the characters in NO WAY resembled the actors doing their voice.

Disney has always altered their characters to slightly resemble the voice actor; it makes the sounds match the shape... ( think of sebastien without the lip, or Kronk a skinny little pipsqueak)

16425  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 artist fired for small criticism of console on: February 09, 2006, 09:06:14 PM
I think that yeah, he's a bit of an idiot for "biting the hand that feeds" but Sonys reaction to it was to make an example of him.

I don't think the punishment fit, given the fact that none of the information fell into NDA-breaking territory. It sounds like he doesn't much care right now, but I'd feel the odds would be in his favour in a  wrongful dismissal case.

The people working on 360 titles are workers from other developers.

As I understand it, SOE isn't "Sony Corp", it's a subsiduary company (which has an Xbox360 title (FFXI). In the interview he mentions being taken down to Sony Corp. and THEY fired him.

It would be like An Olive Garden employee stating he wasn't impressed with Red Lobsters seafood menu and getting fired for it.

(General Mills owns both Olive Garden and Red Lobster or at least they did when I worked for them).

They are  two different product lines, and per the interview he states he never broke any NDA's.

he's not a sony employee; his blog mentions co-workers working on xbox360 titles.

There were a few developers commenting on the poor execution of hardware that the 360 dev kits. Search this forum if you need references, I'm sure there were threads on "OMG 360 devs complaining" or somesuch. pre-nov21 it was big news.

16430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 artist fired for small criticism of console on: February 07, 2006, 11:29:45 PM
I doubt this was his first blog entry, and the fact that they fired him is abysmal. MS had to contend with nay-sayers before the 360 launch; you didn't get firings hitting the news because of honesty. Not only did he drop disclaimers stating the tech shortcomings are 'just what he heard' he also doesn't say that the PS3 is less capable than the 360.

Weak, Sony. Next you'll have us burning books that speak against Sony.

I don't think this is a career-ending move. If he's a talented artist, he will get another job with another company... so long as they aren't a Sony exclusive house.

I didn't like the demo. It was like eating a chicken salsa wrap and Maple Walnut Ice Cream at the same time.

I love both, but NOT together.  It was too much of a pain to keep track of two different boost meters, EVERYTHING EXPLODING IN FRONT OF YOU, and the rubber-band-like catchup the AI seemed to have.

Burnout Revenge on the Xbox was awesome... I hope the 360 one is "kicked up a notch". IN for sure.

Seriously, you are all going to hell.

I feel bad for the number 6 (I think). She'd obviously been crying, and these charges are pretty lame considering the government is doing NOTHING in protecting these women from being taken advantage of by the establishments.

You really think the "clubs" aren't saying Hit it or hit the road?

Clearly there are some questionable "stripper" material out there, but I've got to say I've known a few women go from a 4 to an 11 out of 10 with 20 min worth of makeup and a mirror. (no, that's not 20 min of ME drinking simultaneously you callous asses.. slywink )

And yea, I'm sure SOMEONE will make the joke #23 HAS a callous ass. (beat you to it, WBS)

I don't know that ALL of these women were strippers; it seems like it was a general sting op, and barbacks, bartenders, waitresses, dancers and (*clearly a few bouncers*) were caught in the net.

Seriously ... Exposure, Sale Alchohol... WTF??? Isn't that what they're SUPPOSED TO DO???
