And what the hell is this about?? Did Spider-Man mutate and grow golden spider arms or something?

That bottom one is coming out of his butt.

16412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do Xbox live accounts work for both Xbox 1 and 360? on: February 20, 2006, 10:15:15 PM
I don't see why not. My Xbox live account works for games such as Halo2; the game's live access is xbox live, not 360 live (emulation mode doesn't extend to adding live360 functionality into the games).

I've not tested my live account on an actual xbox1 since my upgrade though. I may be talking via my arse on this one.
16413  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Help me blow lots of money on a new PC... on: February 20, 2006, 10:02:22 PM
Hrm. I would add a drive to that, Tim ... How about a 74GB Raptor drive? Run your OS on it and your basic apps and games, and mount your second hdd as subfolders for large data storage*. Plunk your disk caching onto all logical drives. It will run like a top. There is an advantage to having disk caching on all your drives; working with large files off secondary disks doesn't require the use of the defined temp folder to copy.

eg : 150x55MB RARs on E: (secondary SATA drive). Go to extract to E:, and the system will use the e: drive virtual mem cache to extract it, meaning the file(s) are extracted into RAM (virtual memory on that drive), and then the pointers are moved to wherever you "logically" extracted it on that drive. It's that, or having the system extract it to your %TEMP% folder (likely C: system drive) and then pass it through the disk controllers to the second drive. Given your crazy-ass purchase price, I think maybe you should also get a second 300GB drive and RAID0 the damn thing for even FASTER access. biggrin

Oh, and those RAPTOR drives are FAST. I have my XPMCE2005 sitting on a 36GB, with a few "slave" 8.5ms SATA drives. Bumped system performance big time. Disk access is always the bottleneck until we get a feasable/cost effective solid state memory replacement.

* What I mean is (and this *should* be common knowledge, but people still use "drive letters") ... you can nest a drive mount within your folder structure. For instance, if you have 100GB of music, you really don't want that sitting on your system drive, but you MAY want to have it under "My Music"... you could move you Doc & Settings default to your second drive, OR just go to disk management, select the logical partition (let's say E: ) you want to store the music, go to edit and add a mount point so it also is C:\Documents And Settings\Destructor\My Documents\My Music\Big_Effen_Collection (the last folder should be empty, it's a logical link for the drive to mount to).

Then under my Music you can get into Big_Effen_Collection, or access E:, and any software that looks at My Music and its subfolders will see those files as if they are there. You could even remove the E: mapping if you wanted.

16421  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / New Mobo? New OS License says Microsoft on: February 18, 2006, 01:07:43 AM
Quote from: "drifter"
You dont own software you only license it.

It can be argued that the act of sale overrides any agreements contained within the sealed box; you can't even read the license included until you install the product. Since the license then CHANGES AFTERWARDS based on their discretion, you could not have possibly agreed to it at the register.

This has yet to be tested in a licensing case, but the sale of transaction should override the software licence. At least, I heard that from a friend of mine who used to be into patents and licenses and all that jazz. I'm not proficient in law.

If this is true, then they could see themselves facing class action as more and more people get burned by it and since a PC is completely modular, the license should be valid for any ONE PC at a time.
16422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 to launch in September? Plus PS3 online info. on: February 18, 2006, 12:58:06 AM
 right, and they didn't claim that the videos were ingame. You're right, Sony's hype machine is non-existant, and they weren't touting that their games were being developed for 1080p as a STANDARD.

Sony boasted in its E3 presentation that the PlayStation 3 could output 1080p over two separate HDMI outputs, enabling dual-HDTV gaming. However, this is a future-looking feature to say the least, as most HDTVs on the market today cannot output 1080p.

Right, like the TV is the "big" limitation. Clearly it's now the hardware. They were talking about DUAL 1080p output less than a year ago. Now we're seeing that they're not even doing 1080i ? I call that DROPPED.

Oh, and one last quote, cuz I'm feeling generous :
"UPDATE: We have just been updated by our away team at the SCEA conference that not only will 1080p be supported by the system, but that this is considered the standard resolution for the system. Every game for the PS3 will be in incredible, indelible, indubitable HD.

Nobody at IGN even owns a TV that can do 1080p, but that's the system's goal - to give HDTV a killer app piece of hardware that people will no longer be able to live without. Get your wallet ready..."

There is no mistaken context there; this was published and Sony knows this was going out. It is the expectation they've set, and now it's slipping.

There's also a question as to whether the HD is going to be in it (per the Koei exec) and what else is going to be scaled down? The smoke and the mirrors are starting to part way for the real product. The PS3 seen at E3 last year was as real as the Phantom at that time.
16423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 to launch in September? Plus PS3 online info. on: February 17, 2006, 11:17:14 PM
I consider it fair game to point out press releases from the company.
Remember this one?

May 16, 2005

To match the accelerating convergence of digital consumer electronics and computer technology, PS3 supports high quality display in resolution of 1080p(*) as standard, which is far superior to 720p/1080i.

as a standard. ::cough:: Sorry, I'm just having a hard time with trusting Sony. This statement basically is fantasy, filled with lollipops and fairies. They did it to tout a more powerful product than their competition; a hollow statement at this point.

I highly doubt it coming out spring 2006 (did they NOT know their public dates?) .... that gives them until June 22, 2006 to get their product to market... A market, not necessarily North America. As Koei's Kenji Matsuhara, an exec for the Dynasty Warrior online game development strategy said during a speech at the Asia Online Game Conference 2006 in Tokyo: "Spring is being said, but it will likely be an extremely hot Spring."

From IGN:
Matsuhara stated that he's been asking for a hard disk to be included with the system as standard, but he's not sure what will happen. Despite the lack of solid details from Sony, though, he seems excited about the PS3, finishing off with, "I'm placing a lot of hope in it becoming a force in the spread of Online games."

I am not, in any way putting MS up on a pedastal of righteousness, but I *am* playing my 360 now. Microsoft screwed up with the 2nd SKU and shipping problems, they have their challenges.

[edit] I should also clarify when I said dropped, i meant dropped their standard resolution, not drop the support for it.
16424  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Links to IGN in the news page. on: February 17, 2006, 09:09:03 PM
it's got the on it; I doubt they added it afterwards. Since I've dropped IGN about 2 years ago, this is the first time I've felt "left out" of getting anything. I just think it's kind of bad for GT to put up links for files that are membership only restricted.

if you set my expectation for the 15MB version, it wouldn't have bothered me as much. that's all. smile

Sony has quite a bit of familiarity with running online gaming.  Remember Everquest?

That is SOE; running a MMORPG is a lot different than running a community based gaming service like Live, ::shudder:: gamespy, etc.

MS has had their failed attempts too; look at ... Live is ultimately *NOT* a new product, but a culmination of MS's last 10 years online in a neatly wrapped package.

Just like the XBOX was MS's first attempt at something new and had many a bump and bruise; online game hosting will be Sony's cross to bear this go-round, and they'll need to step up to be beyond simply successful. They're already scaling back the overambitious targets of 1080p etc, etc... I don't think there is going to be a huge difference in performance at the end of the day.

In defense of Andrew, I've also seen that 10 million number for the PSP.  I believe they announced that last November or so.  In the US, the NPD numbers indicated only a small DS lead during the holidays - rather suprising when you consider the DS bundles and the large price difference.

Remember, they may have announced 10million SHIPPED, not sold. ... Nintendo tends to dump less spin into their mix. They don't need to, they're making.....

wait for it.....

1) Given the developers may not have final dev kits yet, and since the architecture is VASTLY different than any other common programming platform (seven segmented processor cores), what makes you think they *aren't* working on beefed up ports? PS2 is apparently supported, they could release emotion engine code on this platform and you wouldn't know the difference. Do you really think -any- company can churn out must-have titles on an unfamiliar platform at the word GO ? FTR. Halo was in development long before the Xbox was dreamed up, and since it was just a beefier PC config there was less to worry about.

2) I *DON'T* think they have the specs nailed down yet; Sony dropped their 1080p support just recently. I'm waiting to see what other "features" are dropped quietly to bring down cost/dev time.

I don't think the piper is going to deliver all they promised; Sony's pre-release strategy reeks like a polititians election campaign. I'll pre-order, but that might just go up for auction if I can't justify the cost with the games that come out.

3) Kevin, I believe you are correct. The SKUs and the details were Aug 23 (IIRC) and late Sept was when the street date was released... the whole"they better release before black friday" threads are bouncing around in my mind.

4) PS3 Online strategy : Follow the leader, and claim yours is better. Even if it's not. It's not like Sony has ever built a successful Online community. MS platform has always been geared to Live, even in it's infancy. We'll see where Sony goes with this. I'm sure the basics will be there; I have my reservations about it being "better" than the Live experience.

And NO, PLAYONLINE is NOT a successful implementation. (I believe SOE had a hand in that one.) MS clearly has a stronger history and the established infrastructure.

keep in mind, we're the niche... they're aiming at the general population and having names like that will bring games into the mainstream media.

Think about it, if movies and gaming produce equal respective amounts of revenue each year (in the billions).... movies cost 1/6 to 1/4 of the cost of gaming. That's a MUCH lower head count for gaming.

Also, once you have lvl20, subjob and the chocobo license, you can more easily ride to wherever you want to and level there. This makes it easier to farm for rare drops that help out, and it's likely you won't be struggling financially unless you're pursuing some sort of trade.

The subjob stats bonus, as well as additional abilities makes for an easier time. (using BLM as a secondary to boost mana as WELL as getting some low-level elemental spells etc..)

I highly recommend leveling THF as a second job, as steal makes it all worthwhile. Also, starting as a thf is a BITCH. >_<;;
