16401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 Launch List to be announced tomorrow? on: October 19, 2005, 08:17:38 PM
Quote from: "Knightshade Dragon"

1-9 = 1-9
10 -> 15 = a, b, c, d, e, f

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexadecimal

Erm. Let's not forget the important character 0.

decimal is from deca (means 10)
hexadecimal is from hex and decimal (6and10 or "16")

smile Normal math (common use) is decimal or Base10. Basically, it means each character is out of a possible 10 combinations. Hex extends it by 6 characters to be a total of 16 values in one character. Since there isn't a common character following, they substitute letters to mean :
0 = zero
1-9 = one to nine
A = ten
B = eleven
C = twelve
D = thirteen
E = fourteen
F = fifteen
There is no sixteenth character; 0 (zero) counts (although it's just a placeholder for null).

Remember grade 4 math, with the "ones" column, the "tens" column, "hundreds" column, etc? This is how it breaks down:

Base10 is 0,1-9  ... so the number 4023 = (4x1000) + (0x100) + (2x10) + (3x1)
Base16 is 0,1-9,A-F ... so the number FB7 = (15x16) + (11x16) + (7x1)

FB7 is the Hex form of 4023. You can doublecheck by running windows calculator, and turning it to scientific. Type in 4023 and then on the left click on the Hex radio button.

or chloroform. slywink

Shortening the separation procedure may also help. You're doing the bath, story and then staying with him until he's asleep. That's a lot of full-time attention and it may be setting the expection contrary to reality. Maybe give him some time between events to be alone and just play (so you'd be starting your process earlier). I'd also suggest trying to put him in bed, give him a loving kiss and telling him goodnight, and then leaving the room and closing the door. He needs to develop the skill of going to sleep on his own.

On the other hand. the games you mentioned would also be cheaper in the future. You can also rent em and be a little more discerning on your purchase. I can tell you Burnout Revenge is really good, but it doesn't feel quite as fun as Burnout 3.

Played all the NES and SNES ones, never played MM or OoT. I have that disk, but I lent my cube to a buddy. :: shrug ::. I wasn't too impressed with the first 5 min of MM, so I'm holding off for a rainy day. Dammit, there's too many great new games to get caught up in the old stuff right now.

When you talk to her (she's likely to call; I mean, she DID kiss you goodbye)... be into her, but keep the conversation short. Make her want to see you.

Say something like I don't have much time right now Jessica, we'll have to make this quick... that way she feels like she's got to put a bit of herself into the conversation. Don't be afraid to end the call before you get all mushy or get to the "uhm, so howya doiiiin'" lulls. End it on a high note, and be very inviting during the call.

She's going through the EXACT SAME crap, or if she's more practiced she's already figured out what she wants to do.

Good luck LE.. I'd laugh if she turned out to be one of the 12 people responsible for the messages posted under U2K/General. slywink Remember to keep the conversation short, cite busy-ness, and that you'd like to get together. Keep a sense of humour about this, and don't worry if you don't hear from her for a few days. I'd call again 2 days after I left the voicemail... you don't want to be forgotten.

Yeah the only restriction that Apple tries to impose is that they don't want you to be able to move music from the iPod to your PC.  Its easy to work around but they are trying to avod having someone go over to a buddy's house and fill his iPod with his buddy's music and then upload it to his PC.

Just get the iPod plugin for WinAmp. I don't even use iTunes. Blech. MMD3 skin on Winamp 5.x with iPod plugin, and everytin's A-o-tay!
16412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I think I need to quit gaming for a while on: October 14, 2005, 06:17:36 PM
Half-Life 2, Halo 1 & 2, Dynasty Warriors Version 3,4 and 5, Burnout 3 (and revenge is really good too). RE4 and Zelda have also entertained me beyond the point of remembering to go to bed. smile

I dunno, I tend to be a cynical gamer, but I love me a few games that feel worth it to slog through the mediocre (such as the Hulk slywink ). I used to love Anime RPGs, but since not having a PS2 for 3 years, I've been out of touch with them. I tried to go back, but frankly the ones I've tried (FF8 and FF9) were so overwrought and predictable I lost interest.

I'd also have to say some of the TC games have been enough to keep me going; multiplayer LIVE is a definate IN~ for me.

This was supposed to happen in Fable. If you didn't get your ass in gear, you may have found another set of adventurers leaving the dungeon (cleared of items and the treasure) and you could contratulate them, pout, or kick their ass and loot them.

As I see it, I'm all for games with reasonable time limits. I don't like the whole "keep-up" game, and a games time has to be tempered with the controller complexity.

Key plot points should be "missable" based on a reasonable time.

Why would Halo2 stretch to fit the widescreen? It works fine on widescreen tvs.

Because it is only a 480p game I think, so 640x480 or something, trying to fill 1680x1050...  Anyway, showing it on a higher res monitor probably exagerrated every jaggy, and other issues, as opposed to normal TVs.

Some 480p games are still 16:9 aspect ratio; there's no reason why it would look worse on an LCD monitor over a widescreen tv based on aspect. The only thing you'd have a problem with is if the monitor only displays at 1680x1050 (which is not a 16:9 aspect ratio... 1680x945 would be the equivalent, or 1867x1050).

http://www.hdtvarcade.com/xboxlist.htm

Now, if you're using composite connection it doesn't send HD signal, or even the proper aspect. If you can configure the monitor to display 720p and send it a 480p signal, good for you. Problem with that is the xbox will only allow proper 480p using one of the component, not composite, hookups.

Now you guys have made me curious. Since the xbox doesn't have a DVI I doubt I could test this though. Man, I wish it DID have one. I'm pissed that the Xbox360 doesn't.

That has to be your drivers.  I've never seen support for that resolution with my ATI drivers.  I'm not convinced the 2005 natively supports it.  I forgot to look last night though.  Do you see black bars on the top and bottom, or is the picture compressed to display that res?

It doesn't for me; on mine it creates a bigger desktop than the screen (eww, scrollbars).

720p games run in 1280x720 and I believe 1080i runs at 1900x1080. And I'm no sure if the 2005 supports those resolutions. The X2VGA website even warns about alot of LCD monitors not supporting those resolutions. All I can say is give it a try.

-Tony

2005FPW supports 720p natively, as long as your video card can do it. ( my ATI 9800Pro does ) I don't see why it couldn't handle it via DVI (given that the DVI works with HDTV signal)

1080 horizontal lines has 1920 vertical lines in 16:9 aspect.
(1920x1080) Math is this : divide 1080 by 9, then multiply by 16 smile

I've not played Morrowind beyond 20 minutes (got frustrated trying to get the stash inside the tree in the first village). Mind you, I was overcaffinated at the time (something Myto seems to be at this point).

I'll get this game as it will have legs, and I do enjoy RPGs. I don't think I'm frothing at the mouth enough to forego shaving cream though.  drool

The other part, is that LCDs really don't do well with fast moving things, like console games (sports, racing, etc.)  The 2005 is okay for games, and I play Half Life 2 on it, but you can tell when you move around to fast.

For games like WoW, or Total War Rome though, its awesome.

Never had a problem with response... it's an 11ms avg response time.
That works out an average response time that keeps up with ~90FPS. (1000 / 11) I'm using the DVI connection.

A lot of people seem to be complaining about the lack of bots... I realize that having the "Quake" name implies a multiplayer/bot focus, but Quake 4 is the sequel to Quake 2 (which didn't have bots either and wasn't primarily multiplayer), not Quake 3.
:lol:

Why didn't they name it Doom 4, then?  I mean, it's the sequel to Doom 2.

Doom 1 and 2 had a storyline progression.

Quake 1 and Quake 2 had a story as well. Quake 3 : Arena was a bot-match game, much like Unreal Tournament. Quake 4 is a return to the "maps with a point" rather than a sandbox of death mentality. smile

Hrrm, let me revise that. Doom 1, 2 and Quake 1, 2 had you enter a map/maze and expected you to come out the other side. I think the word "story" doesn't quite fit properly. slywink

I disagree. The 2005FPW isn't High-Def IIRC... it uses the digital DVI, whereas TVs use the analog signal.

It *is* an awesome monitor though... god I love being able to read forums in Portrait view. smile
16439  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EB (Canada) + Trade-in Business model [UPDATED.. it's ON!] on: October 09, 2005, 10:04:38 PM
Well, all *new* games (as in, released that week) will be eligible. The amount they sell, and the resale value are factored as to when they're pulled from the elegibility list. For instance Burnout Revenge is still on the 10/mo plan.

Also, games under 40CAD aren't valid (they originally were; they decided against it).

As I understand it, they buy back the games (giving you instore credit, a percent of that goes to their profit margin as  both the original purchase and the next purchase have markup). The games will lose some value at first, and then float at what is a good price overall. Since they'd have a LOT of these games (and they don't put the traded ones out until this market value is there), they'll have all the "good" used games for sale. They can sell them for 10bux less than they gave you credit for, still realize profit, and since they're getting a larger market share (and buy more games than any other company in canada so bulk discounts apply) they make their money. I'll get my buddy to re-explain it to me next weekend; there's some advanced finance math involved that's too wierd for me. I may even convince him to sign up to the CG forums and he can explain it himself. biggrin

Also note : you can use your trade-in value for ANYTHING; to keep the cycle going you'd buy another new release title with the 10/mo. Keep the credit on your account if nothing new is in that you want, or move it to a preorder. It's up to you; it still acts as store credit.

Holy shit ...... I may just have to grab a game from 'em. That's the best "rental" setup I've ever heard of. Just not looking forward to the obnoxious sticker.

The sticker is on the game box on the shelf (to show eligibility) and when you buy the game they put it on the back of the reciept.

I don't know if this is happening in BC yet. frown
