16161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: System Exclusives - Who wins? on: May 10, 2006, 05:18:51 PM
Quote from: "Scott"
It looks like based on name recognition, Nintendo with Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda would probably easily win for the average consumer.  For gameplay variety and depth, Sony easily wins.

Your statement begs the question, and is therefore fundementally flawed. You've clearly awarded Nintendo the runner-up and Sony the crown. What more could you expect to gain from this type of thread?

Let me get out the crystal ball:

MS roxxor!
STFU fool
Sony roxxor!
STFU moron
Nintendo = piss
STFU, Nintendo making money

Nintendo is the trendmaker (Pokemon anyone?); MS is the moneymaker (I bet they'll start printing their own currency soon) and Sony had 7 years of 3rd party support behind their previous version. IF things don't change, I'll eat my hat. (or at least crow). People rally to the winners when it comes to publishing; I predict less 3rd party exclusive titles for our friends at Sony, Wii will actually be VIABLE and POPULAR and MS will gain a slight advantage this round as Sony learns how to run a network themselves after they execute every single SOE employee.

Oh, and I see less exclusives period.

16163  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Claim: 360 is just about FPS. Can't be more wrong. on: May 10, 2006, 05:04:26 PM
Quote from: "Scott"
How many kid games on the 360, platformers, strategy games, rpgs, strategy rpgs, adventure, flight, etc.?

Fine, the 360 has more games, but its been out for a year longer.  Its naive to think that Sony won't eventually put out a lot of games too, and so far, Sony has spread the titles around better.

A lot of the 2nd generation 360 games will get ported to the PS3 from the start, so you won't have as many half-assed PS3 launch titles as the 360 (the EA games for example, like Madden).

The thing is, they're ports of first-gen games on a non-native platform with it's own programming challenges (any new architecture has this; we'll ignore trying to write for 6 separate cores which handle special tasks exclusively). I don't know that we're going to see people clamoring to play CoD2 on PS3 when it's a year old and have to pay a $600 admission ticket.

EA will supply ammo for all sides of the console wars as long as their payload makes coin. They will offer exclusives to both sides; it's a no-brainer.

Scott, I'm sure you were one of the people I recall jumping up and down over the killzone movie last year (hell, it took my breath away even though I knew it was just CGI spin); I'm just bringing this up to ground the idea that the 360 lovers are the exclusive clientel dining at the Hype Buffet.

As to the genres you listed, how many do you expect to see on the PS3 at the same time? It doesn't matter that they could have 200 games by end of 2007; they're going up against a very powerful, very popular competitor with a lower price point in their second holiday season with some must-have titles over a first-gen volley from Sony. Plain and simple, you're going to be looking at "buy potential" vs "buy for right now" and the right-now always wins. Halo 1 was the first big step the Xbox made, and one of the reasons they had a "successful" launch in any market. Xbox2 had no flagship; they covered as many bases as possible with A titles such as DOA (fighting), Halo 1 & 2 upgrades (FPS), CoD2 (FPS), Condemned (Action / FPS / CSI mockup), PGR3 (racing), Amped 3 (snowboarding), full support of sports titles (most of which were B+ to A).

They have gaps to fill for sure. They need a solid platform game in the worst way. They need adventure games, quirky games, and definately RPGs (Oblivion is too open to appeal to the FFXII lovers, I think).

Sony has shown no backbone; they changed their controller. Who knows, that "boomarang" could have been the most comfortable feeling controller but they dropped it for a Dual Shock III controller (due to clamoring). What, they can't take a little whining from the industry? Look at Nintendo... they're going Wii no matter what.

At this point their console is meant to be the Blu-Ray trojan horse that brings DRM to the masses and all of their proprietary media standards. I bet they've even got Root-Kit software planned for PCs that connect to PS3's. I don't have a doubt in my mind that PS3 will be successful in the gaming community; wether they sit at the head table has yet to be seen.

I know that I'll get a Wii before a PS3; I can't justify the cost of a PS3 for slightly less than a 360 + a Wii.

No problem.  We just can't compare where Microsoft is now with where Sony and Nintendo are now.  In a year Sony or Nintendo might have just as many quality titles out or coming out as Microsoft does now.

Yes we can; it's the same song/dance with PS2 vs XBOX except now the roles are reversed and the one first to market doesn't have a huge hardware disadvantage.

Success as a nebulous definition would adhere to "meeting and / or exceeding one's goals".

They want to sell the product to a profit, have 3rd party titles and gain greater market share.

Nintendo is the only company who are moving their core business in a different direction. MS and Sony are content to fight for the gamer marketshare with gains as new gamers are born, converted or impressed. They are plowing the same field in a new harvest season. Good for them; there's money there. Nintendo instead has redesigned their hardware to go for the harder target; the buyers they HAVEN'T appealed to in the past. They're going for the much larger potentially more fertile "casual gamer" demographic.

Sony and Microsoft are dabbling in the casual gamer market. Just like our good friend Nintendo dabbled in HD and broadband connectivity last generation. Here's our Live Arcade and where it fits in. Sony's episodic content and downloadable games are the same thing.

Will Nintendo's gamble on the Wii work out for them? I think it will; I don't miss using a keyboard when I play Halo, and I'm sure I'm not going to miss the d-pad or the analog stick to aim when I can use the muscles, tendons and framework that I've grown since birth.

I suspect a long-time terminal maker will be getting into the 3rd party controller business.. Can't wait for the advertising campaigns :

"Wii too small? Wing your wii? Try Wang."
"Wrong Wii will wail. Wang wins!"
" Get bigger Wang!"

and my personal favorite :
"Wii harder with Wang."

You'll want one off ebay instead... WAY cheaper.

eg : Linky-linky

The dock itself doesn't come with ANY thing else from apple; this means you'll need a USB <--> iPod cable (which can plug into the dock or into your iPod directly).

Keep in mind that the dock is needed so that MS doesn't have to include drivers to properly pump power to it via software; the dock does it at a hardware level instead.

16181  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Getting 5.1 sound out of your PS2? on: May 05, 2006, 04:51:03 PM
Keep in mind that DTS doesn't use compression; IIRC to get it to work on PS2 they cut down the sound transmitted. As I understand it, they reduce the sound quality to provide more channels.

Also, if it's 4.0 it's not using the full bandwidth that DTS 5.1 would be using as they've dropped the dedicated subwoofer signal and one of the channels (either centre or only having 1 rear surround; I'm not sure which). I would think they'd offload the center channel to the front L & R and run both L&R through center, as well as to their respective speakers.

Dolby uses compression algorythms instead to overcome the data throughput issue, rather than reducing the sound quality. full DTS is HUGE data (think a 48K .WAV file vs an MP3 which compresses the sound and reduces sound fidelity)

always ALWAYS check mobs before attacking them.

The way the scale works is this :
(all from memory; no promises of technical accuracy)

Not worth fighting (or somesuch message) = 0xp
Too Easy = 10+
Easy = 50+
Decent Challenge = 70+
Even Match = 100+
Tough = 125+
Very tough = 150+
Impossible = 175+

When you get into parties, Tough should be the lowest you go for, as the total party XP is based on the mob's rating to the highest member. This means that if your lvl20 party has a lvl 40WHM you would need to fight monsters in the 40's to get ANY experience.

The closer the levels are, the better it is. Your members shouldn't vary in level beyond 3.

If you have:

and you have a choice between the following :

Go with the 19THF as the safe bet.

If you don't have that option, and both the 20MNK and 20DRK are about to lvl up (TNL or To Next Level is low) then take the 21THF if he's a long way from 22)

Barring that, go with the 17THF. Just know that they are going to be less effective, and will miss more than the other pt members (so you should have a strong party to support them).

I would go with the 17THF over the 21THF if the 17's TNL is low (as he's basically an 18 ).

I was fighting near a BLM last night and I kept seeing combat spam showing he was getting interrupted a lot.

I'm still getting used to a menu-based UI, since I also play EQ2 and DDO, and the first thing I looked for was a hotbar.

Use the CTRL and ALT bars.... go to your main menu, second screen, and there you can program macros. You can also turn on chat filters which let you eliminate the "Others" chats. So you *WILL* see Party, self, and monsters you fight, but people beside you don't fill up your screen.

Some tips :
  • is your friend.
  • So is .
  • Alt - R replies to people who have sent tells to you (keep hitting R to cycle through recipients, IIRC the max is 10),
  • ALT-P takes whatever text you've typed (and not sent yet) and sends it to the party
  • ALT-L is the same for Linkshell
  • ALT-T is the same for a tell (whisper)
  • Click on yourself, choose chat, and then you get an option to choose your default chat mode.
  • Useful macros :
/check <t>
/ra <t> (ranged attack, iirc)
/p Warning: Pulling <t> at <pos> /call3
  • Useful macros :
/p <p0> - HP @ <hpp> (<hp>)    MP @ <mpp> (<mp>)  TP @ <tp>
  • useful macros :
/follow <t>
/t <t> FYI: Turning on /follow macro.
  • Set up a macro for pretty much all abilities you have, such as /ja (job abilities) /ws (weapon skills) and /ma (magic) ... you definately want to announce ahead of time what you are doing.
e.g. -  Burning Blade  Macro :
           /p (Burning Blade) in 4 seconds!! /call02
           /wait 3
           /ws "Burning Blade" <bt>
/p Unleashing (Burning Blade)!! Follow my Skillchain / Renkei!!
Note that you can either use the (Burning Blade) translator in the WS line, or the exact name including spaces within quotations.

  • /p <p0> status :: HP @ <hpp> :: TP @ <tp> :: MP @ <mpp>
/echo <p0> detail :: HP <hp> :: TP @ <tp>  :: MP <mp>

so you will give the party info on your percent, and then right below it you will tell yourself the breakdown. This is most useful for wating for a skill to become available. See next one for example

  • /p Provoking <t> !! /call2
    /ja "Provoke" <t>
    /wait 30
/echo Provoke avail in 30 sec.
   /wait 25
/echo Provoke avail in 5 sec
   /echo Provoke is Available! /call6

This means, as a warrior, you are notifying yourself as to when you can provoke again and get the mob to attack you. it makes you MUCH MORE effective as a tank. With 2 WARs running this script 30 sec apart, it keeps more of the hate off the non-meat-shields.

<t> is target
<bt> is battle target (mob name name in red)
<p0-5> is party members; 0 is always self
<pos> gives the co-ordinates on your current map (H-5)
/p is party chat
<hp> is hitpoints  - 125/500
<hpp> is hitpoint percent  - 25%
<mp> is manapoints - 200/400
<mpp> is manapoint percent  - 50%
<tp> is Tech points (skillchain / Weaponskill) - 87%
All of these work from command line
There is also a comment switch, so you can have it appear as an FYI ... I think it's /echo, but it might be something else.
Also, you can make your char do things without saying anything ( /wave vs /wave motion)

Ziploc makes sense for what it is used for.

How about Seal-a-bag? Zip comes from a device which has 10s of interlocking teeth. This is a ridge. They're standing on the name of a "Zipper" which is also an odd name.

Same as Vicegrip.

Vicegrip is a brand-name of a product that stepped over it's functional name: Locking wrench. It's the same as facial tissue (or disposable hankerchief) being superceded by the Kleenex brand.

Yahoo most likely comes from "Yee Haw" and is an exclamation of discovery.

And Wii (as in Wheee!) would be any less valid ? slywink

Transformers are vehicles that change into robots, what else would you have called them?

They aren't restricted to vehicles, however to illustrate the point you could call them Transforming Robots, Dual-Bots, Go-Bots slywink, Robot Disguisers, Voltron. They could have named it based on the racial conflicts : Autobots vs. Decepticons or based on the color of their logos. (Red vs. Blue/Purple)

The fact is, a transformer is a device in the electrical world that has been around longer than the merchandise; for most of us the context determines what we think. If I say "I'm looking forward to the new Transformer movie" you're not thinking of an electrical documentary.

These are good names for products.  Wii isn't.  While they might have gone through and thought of "whee" like kids on a merry-go-round, there are some other negative connotations for the console.  I have a feeling that Nintendo planned for some backlash, but I don't believe that they had any idea of the backlash they'd get.

This is your opinion, and I don't for a moment think you aren't entitled to it. I would like suggest the following thought process behind the name :
  • Global product
  • Universal name
  • It is typical for industry to shorten name to acronyms (PS2, GC, NES, GBA etc)
  • Representative of multiplayer
  • Appeals to non-gamers
  • Something fun-sounding
  • [/list:o]
You can't tell me that a company like Nintendo didn't have 1000's of hours spent in focus groups spread out over their different markets including their existing customer base as well as their new target demographic. Why else did they anticipate the negative backlash? I mean, MS got a huge backlash this time last year with the Xbox360, it's design, the controller, etc, etc etc.

As to LE's comment about the term Wee as being a UK term for pissing, so I guess you try not to think with your head? (another slang, IIRC slywink). The very next post then goes on to call it gay, a term we are ALL aware means happy, unless you're referring to the slang for homosexual.

I don't see how that type of control scheme could work online.  Just a little bit of lag would cause huge problems.  I guess we'll see.

Doesn't it anyways? how do we know the signal the controller is sending is any more data than a mouse which reads at up to 1500 times per second?
