16161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FFXI - Linkshell - interested? Read this, please! on: April 26, 2006, 12:05:33 PM
I haven't installed it yet, however I will be bringing Stabbetty online.

I have a problem with you setting a 20 person ceiling on the LS though.... IIRC a large linkshell with great people to play with was WHY I was sucked into the game. with 20 people, how often are you going to play?

It is a Sony KD-30XS955 CRT Television.  Several forums (AVS, for example) and a few review sites rated it as one of the very best, and probably last, series of great CRTs to be constructed by Sony.

Do I need to invest in a calibration disc? I was hoping to find a freeware one online, but I've been unsuccessful.

Monster has a new one out. The thing with Avia is they give you some color calibration sheets (think of ye ol' "3d" glasses).

Hey there... I've got these used official Nintendo Gamecube component cables for sale; they run for ~90USD on ebay (+shipping cost).

BUT WAIT! You ask why so expensive? What is SO GREAT about this? Let me tell you friends, these cables can make you see THROUGH TIME!* That's not all though!! If you have an older gamecube with a digital port, it will let you play games in progressive scan (as long as they support it; see Gaming Trend Search engine (cube & 480p) or HDTV Arcade for a list of supported games.

What's that? I can do better than 90 bux? 3 easy payments of 30USD is too hard? How about just two easy payments (made at the same time, of course)! That's right folks, just 60USD (plus shipping) for the cables!

Now, I know you're reaching for your wallet, and I'd be a MADMAN to give you more, but here goes.... I'll even throw in not one, but TWO wavebird battery packs and charging cables!! That's right folks!

You get 2 wavebird battery packs and their cables, and a 90USD(per ebay sales) cable for the low low price of 60USD + shipping!!!

Hurry, supplies are limited (to 1 deal).

man.... i GOTTA stop watching late-night info-mercials!

*See through time: one second at a time, and it all happens LIVE, right before your eyes!! Results may vary, especially with users who have in any way have damaged eyesight.

Update : sold to Graham

I figured this would be the case, but some of the language on their website had planted a seed of doubt for some reason.  Can't recall what I read, but I thought it had something to do with being tied to the hardware.  Might have been something to do with playing a Live Arcade game on another 360.
As long as the new 360 is registered to your account and the old 360 isn't , you should be fine.

I would personally recommend going with WAR, WHM or MNK first. Getting to lvl18 is easy with any of them.

Getting to lvl18 with a THF (with no subclass) sucks ASS. You fight one battle, then rest. Then one battle, then rest. No recoup, no useful skills.

It's a finesse class that is better suited to your second job. (IE work up WAR until 18 or 20, get subclass and chocobo license, then go THF/WAR to 30). Then go for ninja.... if you can't do ninja at 30, you need to work harder at being sneaky. biggrin

I recall it was quite easy, I think you hit "tab" and start typing.  [...] Macros were pretty nice.  The strat guide's macro section was a must-have.  I always thought much of what was in the strat guide SHOULD have been in the game manual.

First of all, hitting tab will bring up ALL items (directory structure) that you can navigate. This includes locations, names, actions, spells, items, phrases, emotes, etc etc... there's ~19 root categories IIRC. If you are looking for ANY option, this is how to go about searching for commands.

TAB is more useful when combined with a letter or two of the word you're looking for. For example, typing in /d[TAB] will bring up a list including /dance. You could also put in s[TAB] and select from a list of EVERY S WORD... so go with Sou[TAB] to get the (South Ronfaure) that you were looking for.

Items are a special case with the translator. The only time items will show up  such as (Leaping Boots) is if the item is in your inventory (mog house, furniture, etc), or has been "seen" by your character (auction house, /check player etc) within the current session. For example,  if you saw the (Emperor's Pin) on someone yesterday and had typed emp[TAB] it would be listed then, but in today's session it would NOT be listed.

As to FAQ's for macros, I highly recommend All the macros are universal, so check out the PC macro faqs.

The only thing I'd recommend the official guide for is for some maps, and all the newb quests. It answers far more, and when you've finished all the Bastok and you're trying to complete your Windurst quests it is recommended you NOT run around as a lvl40 nagging people on how to collect rabbit hides or stones. biggrin
16180  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Thoughts on Flight 93 movie. [melancholy] on: April 19, 2006, 03:58:53 PM
NONONO... I was referring to the "terrorists". I should have explained myself. There was very little insight into the motivations of the people who killed themselves willingly for their cause. You'd be hard-pressed to show me reason why I should be responsible for killing thousands of people INCLUDING myself.

Why did they do it? I mean, on a personal level? What was their justification on an individual level? How did they quantify this act as being worthy of their OWN life?

What is Luke Skywalker and the "Rebellion" ? They're terrorists to the established regime. Are they better or worse than the empire? Ooo, dark forces brought about the empire. Dark shady characters with their own hidden agendas who can destroy an entire nation with the push of a button. Sure. Ok, we know the leader of the Empire was corrupt.

And we think Bush is.... honorable? Able-minded? Really in charge? I've got four words to the "destroy an entire nation" ... Weapons Of Mass Destruction. I don't blame the American population for Bush's 2 terms in office; it's not like you guys VOTED HIM IN or anything. I wouldn't trust an electronic voting system put in place by partisan groups in Bush's camp right after this Florida / Gore wins-no-wait-he-loses fiasco. On the US government and their actions both in and out of their own country, I have nothing but contempt.

Wasn't there a movie about this EXACT type of strike (Executive Decision, IIRC)... it made money; I don't see how (ultimately) the United '93 movie would be any worse of a premise; except it's more real because of the historical reference. You'd think they'd be ready for this type of attack.

As far as the people on the plane, I feel their pain and their loss. I commend the people who fought for control of the plane, they may have saved thousands of lives. I don't know that they are heroes; but they have my admiration for truly shaking the reins of thier own destiny; taking their lives in their own hands.

I will watch the movie. Am I going to see it in theatres? Not likely. The US citizen perspective has been played over and over and over; it is the only side that would fall into traditional hollywood "happy ending, or at least a worthwhile sacrifice" format that almost all movies have. (You know, patriotic flag waving showing that they died for the greatest nation and must surely be in heaven for their sacrifice). I know that sounds sarcastic, but there are few films out there that tell a story without an uplifting ending of either success or at least some moral displayed that would make Asop proud.

I am far more interested in the other perspective; seeing the other side helps give perspective on the truth vs. bias.

I think they were thinking a lot of what people like me, activists, think. "Our government is really messed up, and lots of people are dying because of their actions, so we need to do something."

And the compulsion to kill themselves? There would have to be significant personal trauma or political / religious programming to overcome your natural instinct for survival.

It's time to buck up; you can't let a movie trailer unsettle you. Or the terrorists won. /sarcasm

United 93 has an estimated film cost of 15mil; that's a relatively cheap budget. Looking at the list of actors, it isn't starring Tom Cruise or Jack Nicholson... is it by design or because they wouldn't want to touch it?

Quote from: "Farscry"
Saving Private Ryan was about an event fifty years in the past, first of all.  And second, at this point there's very little controversy about what is a fairly accurate history of WWII.

WWII is a MUCH BIGGER TEAR in the "collective" mentioned in this thread. Holocaust, 6 years of worldwide war, and certainly more than 50k dead. Also, the victor writes the history books. I don't know that we truly have a non-biased view. For instance, Hitler had sought out avenues to export the jewish population but no other nation was willing to take them. That doesn't justify the madman act of committing genocide; you tell me if the jews in Isreal could bundle up the Palestinians and bundle them off to another nation right now that they wouldn't in a heartbeat.

As to benefitting from tragedy, the Dynasty Warriors franchise has been making money on what is one of the largest drops in population. ...reference...

The Three Kingdoms period is one of the bloodiest in Chinese history. A population census in late Eastern Han dynasty reported a population of approximately 56 million, while a population census in early Western Jin dynasty (after Jin re-unified China) reported a population of approximately 16 million.

Yes, almost 2 millenia have passed, and who cares right? If you truly try to associate your mindset with one where 40 million people died over 150 years (with no regrowth)... it's absolutely astounding.

Look at the tsunami loss of life, or the thousands that died in New Orleans due to the US government / state government inaction. These rank as higher tragedies in my books, partly because of the death toll, but more importantly because they were unwarranted and (for the most part) unexpected.

Art imitates life; life imitates art. There is no surprise that this will become a cash cow, now AND in the future. How many WW2 games do we play; how many movies are there about the battles of the 20th century?

See, what bothers me about all of the 9/11 pandemonium is this... what could any ONE person say to me to make me want to plan and execute a plane crash and cause that much damage? What was going through their minds as they called out to Allah? What hardships, pain, strife and misery has a person seen to feel that this was completely justified?

I see this conflict much like the future world portrayed in "Demolition Man" except without the three shells. You have two partisan groups; one who have most of what they need with only a few fundemental flaws and grossly ignorant of the plight of the other group. On the other side you have a group of have-nots and feel justified in raiding the have's due to the burgeoning need. Then you have a corrupted head of state with it's own agendas that align with neither group, and ultimately benefits from their strife.  (it's easier to keep your sheep together when they fear the wolves, right?)

The other part of it is religion.  I detest organized religion of all kinds for this type of behaviour. I look at how the catholics treated Kevin Smith during the months prior to releasing Dogma; it shows even local mindsets can lack "common" sense.

Now, before you go thinking I'm trolling or causing a ruckus, keep in mind this is how I feel. In no way do I expect to change anyone's mind; I just wanted to offer a different perspective.
