16161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XB360 BC - What's Up? on: January 23, 2006, 09:27:49 PM
100% of your PSX games wouldn't play on 75% of my buddies PS2s... given that he's had 3 die on him. slywink

On another interesting note:  Did you know that 87.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

I wasn't impressed with the demo. Too hectic. The insane speed and crashing in Burnout is supported by a simple arcade racing engine between. The whole rewind thing, vs turbo vs every-fucking-thing blowing up all the time ever kinda sucked.

16168  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS1 recommendations? on: January 17, 2006, 08:28:26 PM
I think those games would be fine for a 9yr old. Most of Castlevania is monster fighting, and tales of gruesome monster killing has been in childrens stories for as long as I can remember. This game is the best iteration of the series BAR NONE. It is a must-have title.

The FF Tactics would be lost on a kid unless they enjoy stuff like checkers or chess, as really it is fundamentally a strategy game first, and an RPG after. Vandal Hearts is a more linear game with a more compelling story IMHO.

Breath of Fire series is also a great game (along the lines of RPG, BoF 3 is where your character can morph into many different dragons based on combinations of gems). Along with FFVII, it is pretty kid-safe.

Parappa the Rapper is one of the first successful rhythm games for the PS1 and was a lot of fun. It is very kid-friendly.There'a also Umm Lammer Jammy. (never played it myself)

If you'd like games for yourself (more adult titles) I'd suggest a few such as MGS1 (I wasn't a big fan but there are tons of people who love it) and Syphon Filter (a cop in the future hunting down crooks / terrorists). Vagrant Story and Legacy of Kain as well as Soul Reaver are also high on the Must-Play Teen rated games.

The gamingtrend DB doesn't have PS1 games, so I'd recommend Game

16170  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2 coming for 360 on: January 17, 2006, 08:07:04 PM
Right analog to scroll the window view N/W/E/S. Left joystick to snap to centre and move the cursor around the screen. Hold RT to select troops under cursor. I dunno, I can see how it could work. Use the directional pad for cycling through home bases, or switching menus / menu items.

You still have LT, two shoulder buttons, four face buttons and select/start for interface controls. Oh, and joystick buttons too.

Rather than trying to build an interface based on 2 buttons and precision mobility, focus on the usability of the controller and reduce the reliance on pinpoint accuracy for the pointer.

side note : the multiplayer aspect would get tricky with the slowdown thing.

16172  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS1 recommendations? on: January 17, 2006, 04:02:49 PM
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Best game on that system, IMHO.

You should also snag Final Fantasy 7 (FFVII) if you like RPGs, as it is a great game. I'd also recommend Final Fantasy Tactics. I miss that game.

Kings Field games were decent, and Twisted Metal games (2 was especially fun multiplayer).
16173  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / xbox 360 graphic mode question on: January 17, 2006, 04:02:08 PM
or you could get the 2405FPW (which I have  ) which runs 1920x1080 natively., and takes component in as well.

If you want to run it in HDTV mode, go to the setup blade on the dashboard and in the display, select the x720 resolution. (720p) and turn OFF the higher res option. Voila!

Beat it on Xbox initially, went with the Way of the Open Palm (as opposed to the cold survival of the fittest closed fist). There is also a more vendictive / cruel / evil behaviour which doesn't hold true to the closed fist.

I'd like to explore the closed fist, but I can't see myself playing twice in a row. I'm going to give myself another year and then MAYBE play it on the 360. We'll see.

As to combat, it was pretty awesome as long as you challenge yourself. There are easy roads through all combat, (jump behind-attack-dodge then lather-rinse-repeat) or you can truly use different styles.

The last boss fight was challenging if you didn't just keep freezing him, and offered many different death possibilities. smile

Get the HD AV pack (the Monster one is too expensive).

I'd suggest looking at ebay for the cables, I'm sure there's people selling used sets.

Here is some for sale.

As to getting your Xbox dashboard to show in HD, hold down both triggers and push the left and right thumbsticks in.

If it messes up the display do it again to toggle back. I would suggest doing this AFTER you have HDTV kit hooked up, and then go into setup and turn on 720p / 1080i and 16:9 widescreen settings.

Amped 2 is a 720p game, so are most of the Tony Hawks. List of HDTV games

hrmmm, do they also set their televisions up in the shower? Location is VERY important. Most products come with instructions; "Manual" isn't just a charming book about a young spanish boy.

The powerbrick doesn't have to be fastened to one of the blades on a windmill; it DOES however need breathing room, just like a quality amplifier, computer power supply, or even some satt/cable PVR boxes.

Here's the acid test....

first make sure your xbox dashboard is properly set up (480p 720p and 1080i enabled, with the 16:9 screen)

Then load Amped2 and fly down the hill. (it's 720p).

it should look awesome.

How exactly will consumers be able to enjoy HD DVD movies when the major studios are primarily supporting Blu Ray?  (If I recall, two of the six are supporting both, but isn't it sort of already obvious that Blu Ray won this battle before it really started?)

If Blu Ray I'd seriously consider this add on.  HD DVD?  Eh.

There's actually been some swing towards HD DVD in the past month or so; it's looking like Sony's "this is our product" campaign is falling apart with stuff like facts and reality coming into play.

::shrug:: I'll pick up the dominant one; there's no guarantee that I'll buy blu-ray movies just because I (may) have a PS3.

The MGS4 demo, though, totally looked accomplishable (is that a word?, imo.  And there's a 9-minute video out there where a few members of the team play around with the demo, all in real-time.  Changing the angles...that all but makes me believe we'll be seeing a game that looks just like the trailer we saw when it hits.  Whenever that'll be.

So we get 15 minutes of gameplay and 9 hours of cut scenes this time out, right?

Found their new tagline :

I felt that way in high school and through my first year of college...

Not sure exactly what changed --  [...] All I would say is an echo -- if what you are doing isn't working for you, try something different.  Things absolutely can improve, but they won't necessarily without some sort of change.

I know what changed... you found the intarweb, and pr0n, right? Right? <nudge, nudge> slywink

I get into funked out moods. As the bible states: This too shall pass. Not that I'm biblical or even remotely religious, but given that the book has been around for over a thousand years and is still widely revered, I'd have to say that it's safe to take it's advice. It has not yet passed, even if the accuracy in details and contexts of it's many stories have.

I found that trying something completely different changed my mood. It wakes up the brain to do something you don't normally do. Cycle to school, take up an art class even though you can't draw, etc.

Smile even though you don't feel like smiling. It worked for me.
