At least, that's what google thinks.
It's quite possible he is a lurker here; it's not like he doesn't come across as a gamer of some sort.  Cool

You mean to tell me movie fidelity is why people took to DVD? What about Laser Disc? It was a far crisper picture than VHS, but where is it now? How long was it on the market, and how many big name movies were available?

Laser Disk was on the market for at least fifteen years and *all* of the big name movies were available and pretty much most of the obscure ones, often with excellent special editions.

That's exactly my point. smile It still didn't TAKE, even though it had studio backing and a better picture. Mass consumers didn't see it as the next thing.

Whether it was due to the size, distribution, or the fact that the storage only allowed ~1hr per side (so you were constantly flipping movies over) Laser Disc had a relatively small market share and never challenged the magnetic media goliath, VHS.

DVD, on the other hand, made it look easy. On top of which there was that whole DIVX fiasco (not the codec, the DRM disks) that it flew past. I dunno, I don't think a gaming console is going to change the way we watch movies; the mass market will decide that.

Also, go find Sam & Max Hit the Road on CD with full voice.
Here's some eBay lovin'. Someone here may have the game.

Highly recommended. Also, check out ALL of the Monkey Island games.

As to your questions on Gametap, I believe they're releasing games in chapters, much like HL2.

DVD adoption rate. Price reductions in DVD players.

(by my guess, anyways).

I'd put forth that the adoption rate increases when they start selling 40+ inch HD sets for under 500USD in every store.

Purge, I hate to tell you this but your arguments strike me as specious. How can you say on one hand increased visual resolution and fidelity is important for immersion in gaming but is irrelevant for moviegoers? To turn your argument around, it's not like Lara Croft was a stick figure in 480p but only with high-definition graphics can a player now be truly "immersed" (I hate that word) in a game.

You mean to tell me movie fidelity is why people took to DVD? What about Laser Disc? It was a far crisper picture than VHS, but where is it now? How long was it on the market, and how many big name movies were available? No, I'm afraid there's a gap in your logic.

People BOUGHT pet rocks. They were all the rage. Rocks. These are the same people who will determine the ultimate success or failure of a format change. They don't care about storage space, an additional 240 - 600(i) lines of resolution, although they may tout whatever stats are to justify the purchase should they go that way. They need an HDTV to first see them, figure out the DVI / component / HDMI struggle, etc. We're not talking about people who play video games.

People switched from records to cassettes for portability. Records are still considered some of the most accurate sound reproduction media for music as there is no analog / digital conversion. As it sounds from the mic to your ears. All the small imperfections that haven't been stripped away by compression and coding/decoding. Do you have a 6 disc record changer in your car? How about at work? MP3's caught on because of portability (both in the physical and  illegal sense). They don't ultimately care about audio or visual fidelity. We are speaking about mass market commerce; the technical merits of your product are about as valuable as the technical merits handed out at the oscars. One pretty lady for show, her date, and then 1400 sweaty techno-geeks.

There is a STARK difference in media change over game platform change. PC gaming is in a constant state of flux; PC gamers shell out more than what a console costs (on average) in 2 years just on their upgrades alone. (consider if you upgrade your PC once every 3 years, including mainboard, cpu, video card, ram, storage, user interface devices, monitor, etc..). The fact is that consoles on your set are transient; people expect it to change. It's called "upgrading" and the entertainment industry has conditioned video gamers to expect it.

There are some people who are JUST getting into DVD. Do you think that the market is ready to switch to something that doesn't yield immediate drastic results (not unlike the KAZAA 1.0 era of MP3 adoption)? Why is someone going to buy a new disk over the dvd? What incentive is there? new player, higher cost, smaller "exclusive" library, no market-wide compliance and no backwards compatibility? DRM? Do you think people are going to flock to the new fence around them and help build it?

It may happen if they provide enough incentive, or if Sony hires Tom Sawyer, but they aren't nearly as good at that game as Microsoft... just look at online registration and browser integration, vs sony's long history of public adoption failures.

No, Blu-Ray will ultimately fail. I may eat crow 5 years from now, but that remote chance ain't keeping me up at night. And besides, I hear it tastes like chicken. biggrin

You can turn most of those around toward gaming.  Yet both Sony and MS feel that they need to make gaming in HD core parts of their next gen philosophy and people scream bloody murder when Nintendo doesn't support higher than 480p.

I'm going to speak to the 5 points listed by Sarkus with that "turned toward gaming".
• The difference is: the movies are the SAME; one is just a higher visual fidelity. Gaming is different; the hardware limits the immersion in the games. It's not like Harrison Ford looks like a stick figure on DVD and on BR he's now fully bump-mapped with high-range dynamic underpants.
  • In gaming you are talking about functionality as well as performance. There are aliasing, vertex issues, lighting, shading, textures, etc... In movies the most you'll notice is artifacts. The pattern on Magnum PI's shirt is going to be a stretched out low-res texutre. You fire up a 360 in 480p and then at 720p and tell me you don't IMMEDIATELY notice the difference. slywink
  • This is where Sony and MS have "bundled" to overcome the challenge that a game system is worth that much. There is one stark contrast though; PC gaming makes console games look affordable.
  • Not really relevant. You may need to buy older games again due to no backwards compatibility or for nostalic reasons; the new content isn't the same as the old, whereas movie studios frequently re-release their older movies and will do so with the new standards.
  • Gaming platforms last (typically) 4-5 years. As long as it's one of the big three (and here's me laughing at the taco phone gaming system), you don't have to worry about not getting the newest games. Unless you own a gamecube. Heh. Heh.
  • [/list:o]

Quote from: "Kevin Grey"
why wouldn't you buy HD optical format vice regular DVD assuming that the former doesn't have much markup?
That's a big assumption, and to answer that I'd suggest you consider this : if  I own a Blu-Ray player, and nobody else I know does, and I have 4 DVD players, and I want portability, and only one of my displays is HD, which one do you think I'm going to go with?

People are pissed because KOTOR 2's incomplete ending doesn't have any sort of guaranteed conclusion.  Look at the reaction to Halo 2's ending- most found it very unsatisfying but it's at least mitigated by the fact that Halo 3 was a foregone conclusion.

Cliffhanger ending? Nononono.... gaping holes in logical progression. NPC's odd behaviour that had either no motivation or, worse yet, "forgetting" conversations you had.

Or a crashed and mutilated ship flying away. It's been so long since I've played it, but I can tell you cliffhangers don't bother me. Like I said, I didn't mind the Halo2 ending. Halo1 ended much the same way (MC alone heading back to earth). This time he was riding on the "Arc of the Covenant".
15774  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 pricing on: May 16, 2006, 01:46:08 PM
See, the thing about DVD vs Blu-Ray is this... how many DVD drives do you own right now? How versatile is a DVD purchase for you? You can play it on your PC, on your console (ps2/xbox/360), on your laptop, on your set-top dvd player.

BluRay? On one device for a paltry 500+.

I don't see this getting any cheaper. Since HD-DVD mfg costs are estimated at being significantly lower, I could see people willing to do this.

The only way I'd be willing to pick up a BR over HD DVD or DVD for lower cost is if it came with the standard DVD on the flip-side.

Never beat normal... got a good long way (I remember doubling back to the city and finished the "swimming" area.I don't recall why I stopped; I think it was another title that came along.

I didn't find it overly hard, and I found a cheap way to get your stuff maxxed out.
In the sewers level there is a "Chimney" you fall down in the sewers (it looks like a square well) has 10 bats, and they spawn 3 times. This is right before you face the single snake boss.
• Fall down the chimney (without killing any bats)
  • Wait at the bottom while charging up an attack
  • Ignore the bats gathering around your head as they will sometimes hit you for minimal damage. (They don't interrupt your charge)
  • Unleash your charge attack to kill all of them (takes 2-5 sec for the majority to gather)
  • Immediately go into charging again to draw essence and build the combo.
  • Wait for the second volley of bats to be around your head, and unleash again.
  • Immediately go into charging for the third time and hold again.
  • Wait for the third set of bats to arrive and unleash.
  • Pick up the big yellow essence left over.
  • Run down the hallway to the "Y" shaped opening.
  • Run back to the base of the chimney.
  • repeat steps 2-11 until your yellow essence is full.
  • [/list:o]

Note that you can skip out once and just kill the bats for health essence instead of money.

IIRC, in ~25 minutes I was able to max out my essence. I then went to the shop and bought / upgraded most items and then went and filled up my essence to ~85000 (15k below max).

15784  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / KOTOR 3 News? on: May 15, 2006, 03:09:29 PM
SS, you know what? I loved KOTOR. KOTOR2 (initially) felt SO good. If it were bland all the way through I wouldn't bitch about it. I'd pan the game and move on.

But no, they serve up a delicious triple chocolate birthday cake you've waited all year for. As you start out, you love it, it's so creamy and much better than you remembered last year's cake to be. It has more flavor and far more moist. It's not just giving you light and dark chocolate; no, there's a juxtaposition of the tartness of dark and the smoothness of light that piques your interest with the delicate balance.

Half-way through you start finding bits of peanuts. You start wondering why, but it's a nagging doubt. I mean, peanuts and chocolate go together, right? As you proceed, the flavor starts losing it's sweetness, gradually at first.

Then you find a piece of corn, and you think the baker wasn't working in a clean environment. You think, well, THAT was odd. You go to take another bite and find the cake has gotten thicker and chewier. You plod on, thinking that the next birthday, you'll want this layer fixed.

The next layer is up. But wait? Where are all those light fluffy and moist bubbles? This looks like it's a fudge layer. Oh well, here goes... :: hurck! :: this doesn't taste like fudge... this tastes like ... hrm, feces? The corn, oh dear god the peanuts!!! OH MY GOD!! I, like a fool, have been devouring a steaming turd!

Your cake is 60 bux, and you're going to either not finish it, or fight the gag reflex and hope this is a mistake. No, my faithful child; the rest of the cake is sitting on the same "fertile" soil. There are some moments where you hit pockets of cake, but mostly it's just bubbles of uncooked baking powder with flour and cocoa.

That's how quick the game turned. Some of the plot holes were big enough to fly a star destroyer through. The crashed ship flying away? Hello? The character plotlines that either stalled or jumped track for no apparent reason? Maybe playing the bad side didn't hit all of the plot holes but the good side was a logical train-wreck. Cripes, the last conversation thread with the villian was abhorrent.

Give me a bad game, and I'll move on. Sucker me into 80hours of what ends up being trudging through a broken game and I'm going to take that personally.

I'm one of those people who respect the phrase "when it's done". Prey may be fun, Duke Nukem could actually kick ass, and Team Fortress 2 might rock my world. I can wait; there are plenty of games out there to enjoy in the meantime.

Hell, Halo 2's ending didn't bother me. It's the middle-piece. There was no closure with Empire strikes back.  I'm don't need hollywood (or video games) to tuck me in and lay happy endings at my feet. I'm a big boy now, I can enjoy diverse stories like the movie "Match Point" and not detest the ending for not being traditionally "happily ever after" finish that we've come to expect.

KOTOR3? I don't want to see that until it's done. Even then, I'm not picking it up Day1; I might pick it up Day20-30 after I've heard that the train actually has a caboose. And no corn.

Nintendo built themselves a PR rollercoaster and rode it like a pro... they bring us down suddenly and unexpectedly (Wii), and then sweep up and to the left with the use of it.

The only thing I'm wondering about the Wii is the point of it if it doesn't deliver immersion on a graphical level. That may be my GFX_Whore coded into my brain, but I think it's a valid concern.
