I respectfully disagree about onboard audio.

I recently REMOVED all of the Audigy cards from my machines, and went back to Onboard audio.  I noticed fairly uncommon and random crashes in some games when the audigy cards were in, I traced MOST of the crashes down to sound related (yes, the drivers were updated).  Removed the cards, in 2 weeks running with onboard sound none of my machines has had a single crash.

One thing I do know is that at 4 different software developers I worked for, almost all of their testing machines used onboard sound.  Stardock for example, was almost entirely made up of Dell's with AC97 sound chips.  (and this isn't uncommon)  So I think it is safe to assume AC97 and other onboard platforms are probably the most tested among developers. From this point forward, I am sticking to onboard sound, saving $$$, and having better stability as a result. The rallying cry of onboard sound sucking up massive system resources needs to be laid to rest.  These days, onboard sound only consumes 1-3% of the total CPU power under intense sound.  Thats 37mhz on a 3.7Ghz machine, big deal.

The X-FI, well, that opens another can of worms. ... wheres the exhaustive proof of this? This is a link to a subjective article with no proven "Facts". Is there another catalyst that is causing these issues? As to driver updates, I concur that Creative is one damned slow company to release them, though. The rest of it I'd need to see to believe. I don't know where this mass coverage of X-FI not working came from, this is the first I've heard of it.

As to onboard audio here's a link to different onboard chips head-to-head: ... 31% on the Realtek chip.  eek

They've gotten better (Jan 3, 2006 article) in the nForce 4 SLI bargain head-to-head  however :
Quote from: the conclusion
In the on-board audio area, the Asus and Foxconn boards utilize the Realtek ALC850 while the Albatron board utilizes the Realtek ALC655 codec. The audio output of these codecs in the music, video, and gaming areas is sub-par while performance in games is decent. If you plan on playing on-line or value audio quality, we highly suggest a dedicated sound card at this time, but the onboard capabilities of these chipsets will satisfy the majority of office users.

Heres some more recent audio comparison graphs : .

I have no use for a sub-par product even if it comes at a "free" cost. I'd rather pay less for my mainboard then to pay for sound I won't use.

Also, I speak from experience. My past onboard audio has caused me to have BSOD's. As soon as I turned it off they went away (I had it on for the CD player on option)

are you using a tin-can power supply? I would suspect that.

Oh, and get the fuck off of the onboard audio. Not only does it not work well (it eats system resources like a fat kid in the Wonka factory) but they tend to not do so well in the driver side.

Get an X-FI soundcard if you can; otherwise get an Audigy 2 (the 4's are repackaged 2s...); or go non-creative. Just. Get. Off. The. Onboard. Audio.

Hell, try disabling it in the BIOS and then playing for an hour.

Also, we should know what sorts of settings you have in the BIOS... what's turned on, what's turned off, etc.

  • Try directly to the cable modem (just in testing) to identify it.  360 <---->DSL / Cable Modem <-----> Intarweeb.
  • Some ISPs have been identified as having problems with Live (such as MTS here in manitoba). Check with them or at least their FAQs
  • TURN OFF uPnP on your router. That does 16 different shades of fucked up to network operability.

15770  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / BETA : BATTLEFIELD 2142 open on FilePlanet (Sub only) right now!! on: August 25, 2006, 03:03:06 PM
Just a heads up for those who missed codes last week.

The year is 2142,
and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth’s population. Some will live, most will die.

In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

  • Titan Mode - Wage epic-scale war to defeat your opponent’s Titan, a massive flying warship, controlled by the team’s commander. Players must destroy the Titan’s shields, board the craft, fight to its reactor core and detonate it from the inside – all while defending their own Titan.

  • 64-Players Online* - Experience all-out war with Battlefield’s legendary multiplayer for up to 64 players.

  • Real-Time Persistence - To the victor goes the spoils! Equipment, medals and other rewards are awarded in-game and in real time. Choose an unlock and have access to it immediately next time you spawn. The game features five times more unlocks than Battlefield 2.

  • Customisable Abilities - Gamers can expand their abilities and blend multiple player classes to match their play-style.

  • Lethal Vehicles - Gamers control menacing Battle Walkers that stalk the land and futuristic gunships that patrol the skies. APC’s and high-speed recon vehicles keep the action fast, furious and unpredictable.

  • High-Tech Weaponry - EMP grenades, sentry guns, smart mines, cloaking devices, and more change the rules of the Battlefield forever.

  • The world has changed - Fight for survival on the Battlefield of the 22nd century in brand new locations from Minsk to North Africa as the ice presses down from the North.

Go get some, Soldier!

Uhm, I think you may have missed the point of the Heavy. Were he to aim that thing, he'd have to go prone, as it's a freakin' Vulcan! No, my friend, that is not a precise tool of destruction, it is a spray and pray.

Did you see how many people he killed with it? Also, when the scout is running you see it in use there as well.

MS holds some form of responsibilty for everything that is accessed through the Live interface.  I wouldn't get mad over the horse armor because it's not a big issue but if Bethesda was hosting a bestiality mod through marketplace you can bet that MS has some responsibility for allowing it to be put up there.  Like it or not, MS has some control over everything that occurs over Live which is why they require MS cerfitication for any demos or Live Arcade products.  Unless the Xbox Live logo isn't on the box of an EA game, then MS is going to be associated with it too.

Actually, the source would be held responsible for criminal acts; Microsoft may be questioned as to how it gets there. The point is that MS is neither the owner, nor controller of these online assets other than the store-front. If you buy a Fisher Price toy at Wal-Mart and it kills your child, as long as it passed safety guidelines mandated by the governing body Wal-Mart would not be libel. Fisher-Price, however, would be on the nut for it. If it were a Fisher-Price Stabbing-Weapon-Of-Death with real real blood-lets and jagged edges... well, they WOULD hold some accountability to putting it on their shelves.

Quote from: Kevin Grey on August 24, 2006, 10:18:24 PM

The point of contention occurs at the point where you traverse from one service to another and that "handshake" involves cooperation between both parties.  You can only access the EA online stuff through Live in the first place.  MS could have mandated that EA provide some form of checkbox to allow users to opt out of the information sharing at the expense of no online but they didn't.  Yes, MS "covered" themselves but only in as much as EA did with propping up the EULA too- it might meet the legal wicket (or it might not) but it isn't friendly to the end user.

Sticking to the Wal-Mart analogy, if you have a McDonalds in the building, is Wal-Mart responsible for the food-poisoning? If McDonalds was in the practice of mal-nutrition  Roll Eyes and a lobby group wanted McDicks out of their pristine Wal-Mart, then they would be going to Wal-Mart.

I see the EA Live as the same crap. I DO AGREE, however, that MS should have set down a mandate that their user base needs to enjoy the same privacy that the rest of Live protects them with.

As a sidenote; I gotta start using Preview. ;P

How many EULAs do you read? Piss off.

I don't read them, but I'm not crusading against them either.  MS transfers your information to EA which is something that they explicity agreed to do as a part of getting EA onto Live. Now they could have taken the high ground and refused until EA hopefully came over anyway.  This has been going on for quite a while but at no point does MS go out of it's way to inform their customers this is happening, instead they are content to let the EULA verbage cover their asses even though they know as well as anyone that almost no one ever reads them.  I misspoke earlier in assigning them half of the blame but I think it's ridiculous that EA gets 100% of it and MS gets off scott free.

So I'm going to get mad at MS for Oblivion Horse Armor costing 200creds?

The responsibility of the EA EULA is totally and completely on the shoulders on EA. MS has covered themselves; you can go into your agreements with MS and turn off the renting option. Since EA Live doesn't have an interface per se, you can't even do THAT.

EA wanted to be able to host their own advertising, their own stats, etc. which was their point of contention with Live. For MS it was a matter of implementing a Live gaming protocol to allow users to traverse to someone elses network (and servers).

If you go from a governed street to a private road, You can't blame the government for the requirements of the private road.  Railing against them for allowing a private road isn't fair, given that the assets on that road are something your user base has been clamoring for for the better part of 2 years.

If the game came out at 1200 points (and seemed reasonably full-featured) then they added extra skins in 3 months for a few hundred points, I think most people would be pleased with that. It's the notion that they are holding back content for extra bucks that I think bothers many people.

What exactly do you care, as a consumer, how the business is running? It's not YOUR job to fix EA's job quality issues or business methods. Let the Better Business Bureau handle that. So they bought the NFL license, it's not like other companies can't make football games now, their games just can't feature any players from the NFL. If you wan't to hate on someone, hate the NFL. Stop going to football games, never watch them on TV.

Like I said, I've always enjoyed EA's products and continue to enjoy them. As a person who simply likes to play video games, that's the only thing that concerns me. I absolutely have zero intention of investigating into a company's practices every time I buy a game.

When their criminal treatment of people comes to the media forefront, you don't *NEED* to research it. It's staring at you in the headlines.

Here's a quote from a great movie :
Quote from: Boondock Saints
Monsignor: And I am reminded, on this holy day, of the sad story of Kitty Genovese. As you all may remember, a long time ago, almost thirty years ago, this poor soul cried out for help time and time again, but no person answered her calls. Though many saw, no one so much as called the police. They all just watched as Kitty was being stabbed to death in broad daylight. They watched as her assailant walked away. Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.
Connor: [as the brothers exit the church] I do believe the monsignor's finally got the point.
Murphy: Aye.

MS never intended this to happen; this is all per EA demanding that they host their own servers (it was the bargain struck back in Xbox1 days when EA refused to go Live).

It's not, after all, like their some kind of Vietnamese child labor sneaker sweatshop.

There is a HUGE difference... the vietnamese "children", a.k.a. anyone under 18, are becoming skilled labour and bringing foreign money into their country. This is part of globalization. Those kids used to work regardless of Nike, but now they have shoes on their feet and bicycles to ride. It may be a benefit to Nike's company right now, but it's also a BIG WIN for those communities to have those jobs. The people working there are making more money than they ever did. The only fault in that situation is the government and their lax labour / child-labour practices. I'm sure Nike wouldn't care if their employees were all adults, as long as they're seeing a discount in the wages from 1st world labour operations.

In EA, they're treating people who could earn just as much as they are with the company like shit. The fact that these people ARE protected by a "superior" labour law and are still being worked well beyond reason baffles me.

Vote with your wallet; only buy USED EA games unless it's a struggling franchise.

$35 for these X-230s seems like what I'd be looking for...

You have the following math to consider:

$52.99 / 5.1 = 10.39 per speaker
$35.00 / 2.1 = 16.67 per speaker

This means that, with the 360 audio routed through the PC, you could have 5.1 audio for pc, home theatre use and for games.
It would be the optimal solution.

Personally, I have had the 5300 (this is the updated version 5300e), and I now have the 5500 speakers

LE, allow me to don the "Voice Of Reason" +2 Wis hat here.

You are going to use it on both. Face it. Get the VGA cable for your monitor (and use DVI to the monitor for your PC). There are numerous screen resolutions it can do, and basically you are getting high-def. (720p is 1280x720, 1080i is 1920x1080 IIRC).

If you are going to have a buddy over, you're going to want to use the larger set. I don't know that the svideo is worth that time; you've already got the composite at no extra cost. the clarity you will get on your monitor will have you wanting to see it closer.

As to the bundle, don't go with PGR3 bundle... it's trade-in value is negligable. if it truly is the 360 KIT and not a card, that means you'll have an extra headset for your brother / friend who comes over and brings their account with them. (or a spare if you're harsh on your equipment)

Since you're in a dorm and you may want to get better speakers anyways, may I suggest running the optical out or the rca outs into your XFI input, and then get a decent set of speakers (perhaps something like the Logitech x530s if you want a 5.1 system) or a pair of long-wire / wireless earphones? The speaker option does require your PC be on (when do you turn yours off though?) but then both your PC and your computer benefit. Also, this means that the live headset isn't going to interfere with your voicecomm ability.

Thank god it's only a crappy photoshop -- if that was real, fuck it, I'd buy a PS3 just to spite Nintendo.
Helping a competitor is too indirect an attack. May I suggest instead to hijack a Wii shipment and dump them in the Boston harbor?
