15321  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 360 will support 1080p! on: September 20, 2006, 06:16:07 PM
Since we've noted that 1080p doesn't NEED double the bandwidth (using television's 3:2 pulldown), all that really means is that the sets that can output 1080p will be able to do so with the signal provided, right?

I think the output from the 360 isn't analog until it hits the bulkhead connector; the VGA (which are admittedly analog high density 15 pin) are able to alter screen resolution. The fact that the 360 knows what kind of cable is plugged in, and can select SD vs HD on the cables leads me to believe that the cable portion can handle the higher throughput (even if it IS analog going into the cable).

Look at it this way : we don't know what the max data throughput is from the 360 to the cable itself (MS's proprietary bulkhead connector). If they include tech in the cable to convert 1080p analog to digital outside the 'box, it doesn't matter as long as it hits the TV using HDMI / DVI D etc...).

I'm sure this was a consideration as to why MS didn't just put component out jacks on the back of the 360; that would have been the cheapest way to go at implementation time. I believe these upgrades are not reactional to Sony; they were looking at BD vs HDDVD whilst they were building the 360. It should come as no great surprise if they made backroads to be able to accomplish step-ups that in previous consoles were unattainable without a complete hardware upgrade.

As I understand it, was on the shelf yesterday. When was the F.U.R. posted for it?

Mmmhhhmm. Okay. Thanks for playing.

These "furs" are fur people who want to see general consensus, and are fluid enough to change if longer playtimes = better or worse scoring.

I don't want betas, demo's etc. If people choose to do so, that's their business. I'm not policing it; I've provided the guidelines.

As it stands this would be better integrated into the site and I hope it does make it in some form into GamingTrend.

If you don't see value in it, then don't read / contribute.

Impressions are for reading. This is a "Glance system" with 3-4 positive points, 3-4 negative points (if you even want to put that).

Its a quick way to be heard and low commitment to contributing.

15342  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / 60GB ipod [ SOLD] on: September 18, 2006, 07:06:50 PM
I have an opportunity to get an iPod Video, and am looking to offload my white 60GB iPod photo + Griffin iTalk. It comes with a docking bay(svideo out) ( bought separately, official Apple), Apple USB cable, and Apple USB<>110v A/C plug. I also have the original earphones which are in decent shape. I still have the original packaging. Everything else is MINT, the iPod itself is in great shape for having ~15 months of use. It does have some (very)minor scratches; I've never tried to get them fixed. (there is stuff like iDrops which apparently work wonders).I paid full price for this iPod (450CAD iirc) in June 2005.

The iTalk is still on its way and it is apparently new (ebay purchase) but the video is too good a price to give up and isn't backwards compatible. It allows podcasting and records directly to the iPod (can record thousands of hours). I bought it to use as evidence for conversations with my ex (we go to court next month for custody) so she can't play the he-said-she-said games. It has been 2.5 weeks and the court date is rapidly approaching and is going to miss the fundemental reason for purchase.

If you're interested, PM me with an offer along with your preferred shipping method and zip / postal code and I'll let you know how much the shipping would add to your offer. If you have price suggestions only, feel free to post them here. I don't mind giving it up for a nice price; I just don't want to let it go for a song-and-a-dance.

So, send me a price; if it's funny, I'll laugh.

[edited title to garner some negative feedback, also I need a taker today at the latest; no time for ebay]

Harry Turtledove's Videssos Cycle is a terrific series of novels. He also has a tremendous line of "alternative history" books. I've read the first four books (the first Videssos series). Terrific stuff.

Robert E. Vardeman's Cenotaph Road is an easy read and is pretty fun. I could never find books 5+.

Piers Anthony's Adept series and Bio of a Space Tyrant were influential when I first started getting into sci-fi / fantasy. The Xanth series is stupid, vulgar, crass and punny. It's all the reasons I talk to Knightshade Dragon.  :slywink:  I wouldn't go out of my way to read the 30+ novels in that collection, but if you see one at a garage sale for $0.25 it's a quarter well worth the laugh.  nod

The Adept series is a must-read; it is pretty universal. I found the Bio of a Space Tyrant a little slow as it is a political series more than an action series. I don't recall getting through all of them either.

Robert Jordon's Wheel of Time is _EXCELLENT_.  There are a couple of meandering books that he lost favor for, and I hate how he's trying to write another 20 books in this world. I really hope he finishes the Rand time before he kicks the bucket, and if he wants to write more he can start a parallel, prequel or some other "Age".

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth is amazing; I know Gratch wouldn't recommend it beyond book 2 or 3, but the later ones actually fill out the main character a lot more. I am 2 books from the end of whats out and there is a few more books on the way.

Brian Lumley's Necroscope series is all about ESPionage during the cold war (British vs. Russian ESP agents) and thier discovery of Vampires (a symbiotic parasite) and it covers their origins. It is DEFINITELY one of the best vampire series I've ever read. I recommend the first series only though; I didn't enjoy the second one nearly as much.
1.) Necroscope
2.) Vamphyri
3.) 3.) The Source
4.) Deadspeak
5.) Deadspawn

Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Tomas Covenant has a new series coming out. If you haven't read the First or Second chronicles, then you should. Some really remarkable storytelling in those books. (there are two series of 3, and he just wrote a new one recently).

Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a terrific series of fantasy novels. It starts with The Dragonbone Chair, carries through The Stone of Farewell and finishes with 1650 pages in To Green Angel Tower An amazing story worth the money for the 4 paperbacks or 3 hardcovers.

On the bright side though, Phantasy Star Online is coming to the 360 and PS2 in just short two months and I already see myself spending countless hours on it.. online and off.
(Anyone remember the old dreamcast days with PSO?)

Corruptrelic.... FFXI is on Xbox360 as well, and it looks almost as good as the PC version. The PC version is a pain to play unless you had a PS2-like controller, so the 360 controller is a good fit for the game. If you already have an account from prev. playing (or you know someone who has an account they're willing to sign over) then go to town with it.

Plug in a USB keyboard and you're good to go.

- people to make brief comments if they've voted and wanted to point out their good/bad points. (not mandatory)

- people who are looking to buy the game to be able to see this and help them decide
- to be able to come up with another line I can start with "People"  icon_lol

I DONT WANT :
- demo reviews; that's not final code. Unless the title specifies otherwise, retail product only.
- bogus reviews. If you haven't played it, don't vote.
- Fanboy review effects. Fanboys can vote if they meet criteria, but I don't want a hater* to skew results.

The downside to this is I could fill a forum up. This should really be incorporated into the site, or at least it's own section. (ForumUserReviews) and each thread should be a poll about a released game. We could keep adding them for each game where someone picked it up and wanted one up.

I've provided a template idea; it'd be YOUR job to implement. biggrin heh. Or I could just do them here when I feel like it. I think we should stick with the same 10,9,8,7,6,5,4-1 with the same descriptions for consistancy's sake.

Quote from: Kevin Grey on September 14, 2006, 02:53:18 PM

I think the difference here is that Sony is actually making money on PS2 hardware sales- to this day MS still loses money on every Xbox 1 sold and that won't change because of the nature of their agreements they made with the different component manufacturers.  That's why, in addition to stopping devleopment of first party games (and presumably not promoting third party exclusives for the platform), they stopped actual Xbox console manufacturing last year too.  It is completely in MS's best interests to try and shift every available consumer to the 360 which was designed to ultimately turn a profit on each game console sold.

So for Sony, PS2 hardware and software sales are a nice continuing base and for all the stupidity of their recent moves, I don't think they are too stupid to see that a $129.99 hardware component isn't going to signfiicantly cannibalize the sales of a $600 hardware component.  People who are just now getting around to buying a PS2 are not the early adopters willing to shell out for the PS3.

I would put forward the PS2 purchases are people buying replacement hardware.  :slywink: PS2 isn't going anywhere, and they have installed base. As it stands I think that the PS2 may even outlive the PS3 (should it fail to "Take"). This isn't to say that Sony is committed to their customers; it's just that their PS2 cow has a lot more milk with little overall cost or effort. They have done an excellent job with their PS2 strategies.

But as you said a 129$ product ain't gonna cannibalize their new product lineup, it's also not going to significantly eat away at their next-gen competition either. BC or not, most people who've invested in the hardware would keep it over spending an extra 200 to get a ps3 over a 360. I know *I* would.

Also, I don't think sony makes money on console sales (Nintendo does though); they just lose significantly less. Maybe the PSTwo changed that; I hadn't heard that. Consoles sold lose money, game adoption rates determine profits.
