OK, got it running by upgrading my nVidia drivers to 196.21.  holy hell this game is beautiful.

This is why I wanted it... I'm a graphics whore....but I have recently decided that I need to be able to enjoy playing the game as well... super snipers and buggy shooting as mentioned in KD's review have me worried....

Is it present in the PC version? How about the animation issues?

Yeah, sorry, but $50 is too much for a game that sounds like it has absolutely nothing in common with the predecessors in the series. I was in it mostly to see how the Kane story ends, but as others have suggested I think I'll just watch all the videos on Youtube and pretend I played it instead.

You Tube don't fail us now!!!

My review is for the 360 version.  Some of the stuff that I ran into, I doubt you'll see on the PC.   Either way, here is my review:  http://www.gamingtrend.com/Reviews/review/review.php?ReviewID=1392
I am confused... Looking at the review, it seems that there are some serious coding/gameplay issues. Why wouldn't these be on the PC?

I'm out. I found out there's no real resource model in the game today. So this isn't C&C, it's World in Conflict with Kane videos in between.

I didn't really enjoy World in Conflict. I'll be passing now.

Thanks.... I am mostly interested in the storyline to see how it ends.... Worst case scenerio, someone will probably post the entire story on You Tube at some point... If the DRM is acceptable to me, I'll buy it though to play through....

I live in NE NJ.... We lost power Sat and got it back late Sun... We had about3"-4" in the basement and what looks like an oil spill... No idea where that is coming from... I thought the sump pump at first, but it's did start working once power went on....
I drive around a lot for my job an easily spent about 2-3 hours of driving time going around detours.... TON's of detours and many areas were pitch black this evening.... Thank God for GPS....
One job I went to had a branch fall about 20 feet in back of my truck while I was onsite... If I had decided to park there....BAM... 2nd sunroof...
Saw lots of downed tress, poer poles/lines and many trees like Bullwinkle's... just about ready to fall....
I'd swear that at least one town had more roads closed than open.... Some people still being told Thursday at the earliest for power and I'd believe it....

Actually, I am curious why you put the key in steam too.
974  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Steam--your cd key is already in use on: March 11, 2010, 09:16:54 PM
1) If paid by credit card, do a charge back
2) Bring it back to a different BB and just tell them you're getting cd errors during install and you want to exchange it.
3) Call the DM back and tell him/her that Steam told you that it looks like the game was used and returned to the store before you bought it.

The only problem is that I'm pretty sure if nobody buys the PC version they'll just spin it saying that they had a true fix for Piracy and that there aren't enough PC gamers out there to buy there games that they just won't release for the PC anymore.

I'm sure Dice would disagree with them....

I'm not a tech guy by any means, but it seems to me that dedicated servers, infrastructure, bandwidth for constant monitoring, personnel, etc., would be far more expensive that what they would have lost from "casual" piracy.  Am I way off-base there?
It would depend on how much they attribute to piracy and IF that was the only reason for the DRM (preventing used sales is another reason)

Don't know how many servers they have, but if the servers are dedicated to the DRM let's say they are $1500-$2000 each.. Maybe they have 25? Thebandwidth for the monitoring would probably be minimal as would the personnel. They have montioried the existing issue for a day now, not sure if it's fixed or not yet, but that would indicate minimal personnel. Not too mention I doubt very much they hired anyone for this, they probably used existing admins... bandwidth for the verification is also probably not that much either..
Also, they could get away with chear/less servers than I mentioned...
977  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubisoft unveils new copy protection system: on: March 07, 2010, 10:49:20 PM
You know, for this situation, I don't feel one bit sorry for any of the people who bought this game knowing about the DRM ahead of time.. In fact, I think it serves them right......
I especially like seeing some of the people complaining who kept saying 'no problems here" while other people reported problems...
I hope they are down for a week....
I am really surprised that there are people surprised that this happened.

They currently have 2 games running on the servers, one of which isn't even available in the US yet.... Can't wait to see what happens when the rest of the games come out...

Liking the game as a good diversion. Liked the demo enough to pre-order. They should unlock the 30 minute time limit for pre-orders. smile

Having a LOT of trouble doing the double grappling hook thing where you fire one then connect it to something else.. they should have had it where you hold down left buttom to fire 1st one, then while holding down, hit the right mouse button..... You dint have much time between releasing the left button and clicking it again....

And apparently Ubisoft has gone into Damage Control mode:

Quote
You have probably seen rumors on the web that Assassinís Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 have been cracked. Please know that this rumor is false and while a pirated version may seem to be complete at start up, any gamer who downloads and plays a cracked version will find that their version is not complete.

Yeah, it doesn't have any of your bullshit DRM in it, that's what.

With that said, VE3D went on to say (which I haven't poked around enough to verify):

Quote
A spot of clarification: Silent Hunter V: Battle Of The Atlantic has been scene cracked; Assassin's Creed II has supposedly been cracked by someone over in Russia. Applying the scene crack to your legally purchased copy of Silent Hunter V will give you a complete game with none of the Cloud Copy Protection grief. The Russian Assassin's Creed II code floating about may be missing the digitally distributed DLC, which would give the publisher another reason to bandy about the 'incomplete' accusation.

And my bolded part still shows that Ubisoft's DRM has been completely and totally removed by the crackers in the very least.

Well, this means they cant turn around and say bad sales are because of piracy....

2) If my my Internet connection goes down and I want to play Silent Hunter 5 and I can't atthat moment, I'm not gonna come here and bitch about it - because my Internet connection will be down slywink
4) Most teeth-gnashing seems to be of the "pirates will get it anyway - DRM just punishes legit users" variety.  We just have a fundamental disconnect there.  you could apply that same logic to any law - lawbreakers will always break laws, those that follow the law will be restricted.  Put another way, is the presence of lawbreakers a good resaon to dispense with law?  "Why put locks on your house?  Someone that wants your stuff will just break in anyway, and you might lose your key and lock yourself out.  It's just not worth it!"
These 2 are related so.....
With this DRM, it's NOT just about being able to start a game at any given time.... It's about being in the middle of the game and getting kicked out of it with no warning.... So again, you are in the middle of a long patrol in SH5, maybe you just spent 20 minutes or so playing... You Internet drops for even a second or two and you game exits with no save. You just lost all that time..
This would be similiar to a business app like a spreadsheet.... You just spent 20 minutes entering data, then you Internet goes down and the spreadsheet exits to desktop and you just lost all that info....Try this type of DRM with your business customers and see how long it lasts...

As for your house analogy, you're right, I wouldn't take my locks off, but using your analogy, this isn't about locks and doors to keep out theives...This is more like:
I put locks, doors, retinal scanners, dna verification, guards, guard dogs, alarms, maybe a moat.... Then I require EVERYONE (friends, family, UPS drivers, etccc) to also call me when on the way in through all of these measures and if their phone call drops at all I release the hounds and kick them back to the entrance to start over...

Quote from: Geezer on February 24, 2010, 05:53:02 AM

3) I think y'all underestimate the value of locking out casual piracy.  Now, maybe those darn kids today are all up on their torrents and stuff, and maybe they know all sorts of ways to break even the best DRM, but I suspect that there are a whole slew of folks out there that don't have a clue about how to pirate if it's not slapping them inthe face

3a) SH5 is going to appeal to sim geeks and history buffs.  Probably and older demographic, in general, and one that is not all hip to the current state of torrent-driven piracy.
This is WAY beyond locking out casual piracy! Casual piracy is pretty much when someone takes their disc and does a straight copy for a friend. This has been stopped for YEARS with even basic copy protection for those people "not all hip to the current state of torrent-driven piracy." There would be no reason for a new DRM for these type of people. Those people who already know how to get cracks would most likely also know where to get the cracked full game in the first place.
