I'm mostly getting the Xbox One for the TV integration.  Mostly.

DVR control would be awesome but even without it, I'm looking forward to not having to switch HDMI channels on the TV between TV and Blu-Ray and gaming.  Hopefully I can pass the Apple TV through too?  Does anyone know?

I believe the XBone only has a single HDMI input.

I've been basically thinking that I'd run all of my other stuff through my receiver and then run that output to the Xbone, but then I'd have to still use my receiver remote to change inputs, which sort of defeats the purpose.

That's part of my issue with the architecture, it seems that a) they didn't really think about A/V receivers as a part of the ecosystem (which might be fair, I'd bet that's a relatively small portion of the market) and b) they assume that you will have an XBone, a cable/directv box, and nothing else. Which might make sense in the long run when everything is integrated, but in the short term does not at all work for me.
This is odd, since don't you need an AV receiver in order to do surround sound? I suspect that a lot of people have this, since there are cheap sets for under $300..

Did the marathon and we liked the new one.. I do think I like the new one more than the first actually.. there were quite a few times where it felt "Star Warsy" in a good way.. (and one scene where i expected sand to come up, but thankfully it didn't...)

Nice and funny cameo also! Wasn't expected and it got a laugh out of me..
Ohh and Loki stole every scene he was in!

just in case spoilers...
Spoiler for Hiden:
It's in the trailers, but towards the end a large spaceship goes crashing into Greenwich and a bunch of stormy looking troopers come out...  There is a definite end of the world vibe going on, but where the heck are the Avengers? This is the type of thing you would expect them to show up at... or even SHIELD.. Since the movies ARE tied together, this seems a little odd.. I understand why (It's not an avengers movie), but it still seems weird.

Like Bullwinkle said, a lot of it is about licensing...
This goes for pretty much all of the comic based movies and shows...
None of the Spider-Man movies referenced the Avengers or Fantastic Four, even though there was some major problems going on and Reed Richards helped with the original Venom..
Plus, the SHIELD show is really about special events.. Nothing that requires the Avengers.. Maybe eventually... But it's a show about SHIELD, not the Avengers...

I finally watched this movie tonight. Why would his claws grow back after being cut off? Why would a robot on his heart stop his DNA from healing? Why would drilling into his claws cause him to grow old while the old guy grows young?
The claw thing is canon to the books, but to answer your question the claws have always been there as they are part of his skeletal structure and part of his particular mutation.  Once his healing factor kicked back in the bone claws regrew.
Actually, if I remember correctly, from the comics Magneto actually pulled the adamantium off his bones and through his pores and his healing factor broke after it saved his life from the ordeal.
As for the rest of you comments about the movie... made for a cool story I guess
Robot: Wolverine is not invulnerable, so he can be killed.. I suspect that the robot thing was just constantly killing him.
drilling into claws: probably just using it as a way to get into his bone marrow to extract his powers
old/young: Wolverine is old. His power slows his aging and keeps him young. when he lost his powers completely by having the other guy take them, he started aging fast. the other guy got younger because the power started to "heal" him.

It would be cool if they were able to add an element of gunplay at some point... something were a few random people get nerf guns with limited ammo to help clear some of the very infested areas.
But this is definitely something to try if it's in your area... I would hope that these things may start to become more common...

191  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: It was the best of times...it was the worst of times.. on: October 14, 2013, 04:55:20 PM
OK, here are some more details..
1st off, the course was brutal for us... Someone in perfect health would have an easier time, but not by much... I'd actually like to see Olympic athletes try this...
This is like a haunted house on steroids...
You go through in groups of about 30-50.. Group size depended on how many people signed up for your wave. Waves were scheduled every 15 minutes or so.
Your group gets the normal warnings to not touch the actors and also a new one that you will all need to co-operate to survive.. This is pretty accurate, but as will happen if this really takes place, this was easier said then done. They estimate that the course should take about 30 minutes give or take... We definitely took longer.
The object is to make it through the course without being touched by a Zombie. Keep in mind this is an obstacle course and not just a regular run. Zombie on the course will have stuff on their hands that glows in a blacklight, this will be used at the end to see if you are infected or not. I couldn't confirm, but I suspect that not all the zombies have this...
Zombies are "mostly" the slow kind, but there were a couple of actors that did some fast moves, not that they even needed to do that...
Your group starts together in the evacuation zone. Your goal is to get through the course to the decontamination zone were it will be determined if you are infected or survived and can be evacuated.
Right at the start you can see how things would play out in real life... This is not a timed course or anything... but as soon as they said go, the mob took off running... if you were in the way, you went down... multiple people in my group went down.. some were pushed, some just fell while running... This was before we had seen even one zombie...My wife tripped within the 1st 2 minutes, so I had to run back and help her up, then about 2 minutes after that, I took a spill... Both of us had minor injuries only at this point.. knees, elbows, and hands... We kept going and I helped a few people up that had fallen... I did see other people doing this as well, but not too many... You could definitely feel an "every man for himself" vibe going on with a lot of people... and this wasn't just with the random strangers.. I saw a few groups that came together start to split up...
Now, let me pause a minute... We have done a TON of haunted house like things and I can't recall ever being scared (startled a few times though) and never getting a sense of realism... For whatever reason, the first few minutes felt real somehow.. not sure why, but this was definitely an interesting experience... It may be the running part and the part about actively trying to avoid zombies at some point..
Back to the course..(BTW, not sure if I will remember every detail)..
Pics in spoiler for size..
Front of pass
Spoiler for Hiden:
Back of pass with map
Spoiler for Hiden:
back of pass with course marked.
Spoiler for Hiden:
We start by the red S and follow the course down to the end of the dock, then back towards the front. We then cut across the dock and run up stairs to get onto the flight deck, go to the back, then the front, then back down the stairs, then to decon by the round circle.
In a somewhat remembered order, here are the obstacles..
First part of run is pretty clear, then about 50 feet on, you start to see zombies.. not too many at first though and are pretty easily avoided, but this is also at the point where people start panicking and the falls start. We start seeing minor obstacles that you can go around like barricades and such. Most of the zombies weren't actively going after people, they were just close to the barricades you had to get buy and were waving their arms about and such.
Here's a good video I found..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuPkY8FCD1I
You'll see in the video the at around 6 mins there is a bunch of scaffolding you had to climb. I took my fall right before this, so when we got to the top, my wife and I took a breather.. It was a safe zone at the top... We were both banged up at this point.. Also, there is a bus in the video, however when we got to this, it was filled with about 7-8 zombies right in the middle aisle.. so we got out and found a way to squeeze through the front of the bus on the outside. There were also a lot of bottlenecks.. some were by design and allowed you to catch your breath and others were caused by people just bunching up trying to get by a particular zombie group. At around 7:45 there is a path with bars across.. this is the back end of the dock where you start to make the u turn. this is where we pretty much gave up and it wasn't even the halfway point... We still kept going and trying to avoid zombies, but not as actively since by this point we had been touched by so many zombies and were beat to hell, we figured we were dead anyway.. (and felt like it).. I started going from survival mode to fun mode and started messing with the zombies and distracting them so that other people could get by (ZombieBait!) I would jump in front of zombies and yell at them, make fun of zombies and joke around...
We then had to cut across and walk up the stairs to the flight deck with zombies on the stairs as well.. after we got on the flight deck we headed towards the back and there was another safe area with Dasani vending machines, so we got some water (So yes, if the zombie apocalypse happens, you can still use vending machines...).. there were some more zombies on the deck as we made our we to the front and what do we see? another safe zone, but this one has free bottled water! Argh.. they should have had this on the other end..
We then make our way back to the stairs, but luck is with us! Some zombies are getting off the elevator, so we wait for them to get off and take the elevator down.. When we get down, someone calls us cheaters, but there are no rules in the Zombie Apocalypse! This is now at the end and we go through decon where they wave the black lights over us .. I am up 1st and I'm told to go left, my wife is told to go right... Well, it looks like left is the bad ending as I am sat down in an exam chair and a doctor looks me over and pronounces me infected.. She then proceeds to get a prop gun and put it to my head (which leaves a red mark on my forehead).. and I am dead.. frown
the End...
I would definitely recommend this to everyone and we will go again next year, but we are still paying for it.. between the falls and the exercise, we are both still in pain all over (we would make good Zombies right now)
I also realize that in a real zombie apocalypse, I need to make sure I have lots of ammo, because with all the running, we'd be screwed.. smile

So, on Saturday night, my wife and I decided to do this at the last minute...
It really was one of the best and worst things we have ever done...
Neither one of us is in the best shape, but we are not bed bound either (well, we weren't before this!)
This was after our 3rd day of comic con NYC, so we are already kind of tired and beat... We were on the platform for the ferry back to Jersey, with the ferry incoming, when a father and son came up and we saw the tshirt they had for the event.. Now I had already heard about it, but thought it had already been done the night before.. We started talking to them and they said it was a lot of fun, but pretty extreme... So, as the ferry approaches, I talk to my wife and we figure we would go take a look since it was only a few blocks from us. On the way, our full intent is to just join spectator mode... Unfortunately, spectator mode did not make it into this release version.. You had to be a survivor or zombie or not have anything to do with it.
There were people of all shapes and sizes, so that encouraged us, but I still wasn't sure.. So we decided to go see if we could even still get tickets..of course, I'm hoping not, so I have a legit excuse to back out... Unfortunately, they did have tickets..ok, but surely they were going to be tickets for the last waves, and our ferry might not be running then...another excuse! Nope, tickets were for the next wave in about 20 minutes...damn... Ok, we'll, bank account is a little low, so can't use debit, and CC I had on me was maxed I'm sure, but hey, let's try the CC, it probably won't work! Another excuse! And one I'm sure will actually happen! Unfortunately, the CC went through.... I see a pattern here.. Guess it was meant to be.... So, we actually had to do it!
Anyway, it was one of the best and worst decisions in my life... hella fun! But I am still paying the price (along with my wife) even tonight and probably for the next few days...
If anyone wants more details, I can post them..

I got to try it today for a minute or so at Comic Con and.... I'm not sold yet... This was a demo at the Intel booth for a F1 racing game and to be fair the person at the Rift section didn't seem to know too much about it.
Pro
the overall effect was pretty cool and my wife liked it.
Con's
picture quality was really not the good. It was fuzzy/out of focus. (not sure if there is an adjustment or this is how it is for now, and the attendant didn't know), and it was really low quality you could see the horizontal scan lines.
I do plan on trying it again sometime this week, hopefully with more time. and again, the overall effect was cool and worked. I did get a little dizzy while moving around.
It is also possible that the Con's I have are due to the nature of the demo (As stated, it wasn't an Rift demo so much as a demo of the F1 game with the rift)

Since I've annoyed everyone with yet another book cover, who wants a gift certificate for a free kindle version of The Zombie Wilson Diaries? Just shoot me a message, I have a few freebies available.
what, you can't offer a signed copy of the Kindle edition?

Cast-wise I'd say the main hunk is definitely a weak point, but I'm not too worried.
I wouldn't call Coulson a weak point!  ninja
