I think I can figure out the playable factions/sides.  But the combat element doesn't look like anything we've seen before.  Far more Unreal than WoW.  Perhaps they're going the route SWG recently took?  Personally, I'd love to see somebody pull off a "shooty" MMO.  The genre could use a new play mechanic.

Not that I've played them, but wouldn't Planetside or WWII Online fit that model?

They are both FPS type games, but WWII Online may as well be turn based. I liked the games potential, but it moved WAAAY too slow for me...

I talked with a programmer on a message board and he said it was easier to make a good AI for a turn based game than a real time game, which surprised me.  I thought the opposite was true.  It was on a Master of Magic 2 forum where I proposed the main reason MoM 2 wasn't made yet was because the AI programming would be very difficult.

This makes sense because the AI isn't really under a time constraint to think about what to do, whereas in an real time game, decisions have to be made instantly.

I was always under the impression that AI in general is hard to code, primarily because "we" can think up a lot more crazy stuff then the computer and there is no way to think of everything wqhich could lead to problems.

I remember one of the Oblivion articles talking about an npc farmer or something that would go around killing other npcs for their rakes or something like that. I thought it was funny, but can see how it could be a problem. Besides, the day we make real AI is the day "they" take over and thus no more video games....

Norton System Works for about 6 years now.

I have never had a virus (Knocks on wood)

Just an FYI. I get this a lot from my customers.

1) NO anti-virus is perfect.
2) There is a possibility that you do have a virus on your system without knowing it. Not all viruses are destructive and many trojans would not want to do anything to bring them to your attention.
3) We were doing a virus sweep for a company with several locations. We had to sweep their personal laptops because the service porvider was shutting them down due to virus issues. Many had AV software on their systems. Symantec, McAfee, etc... all of the "mainstream/retail" software.
Many of these did have viruses on them anyway.
Many of these were the 60 day trial version they got 3 years ago and thus hadn't been updated since then.
One particular person I remember, gave us a hard time because he didn't want us touching his personal system because "you guys always screw up my laptop". Since we had never touched his laptop before, I don't know how this would be possible. Also his son "works on computers for a big company and setup his laptop and cleans it regularly". His system did not have ANY AV software, only the free version of Zone Alarm. We explained that if he didn't let us scan his system, he wouldn't be allowed to use the network anymore. He said fine and took his laptop. He went and complained to the Mgr and thankfully they backed us up. He came back 2 hours later and in a huff gave it to us and said we wouldn't find anything. As you can guess we found stuff on his laptop. In fact he had the most hits from the virus/adware/spyware software we ran. Approx 450 hits for virus and 600+ for spyware adware.
I wish I knew where his son worked because there is probably a position available.

I have found viruses on my system before as well. But since I do clean it regularly, they don't hit me as hard.

Higher is generally better, however both the video card and monitor need to support it. You may get a better picture with a lower refresh rate.

Now I know why this area of the forum is labeled 'off topic'

I honestly think a thread could be started on shoelaces and by page two it would have devolved into "Bush is bad" "No he isn't" "Yes he is"

It's a pretty bizarre and increasingly common phenomenon around here.  Heck if I understand it.

Bush>Oil>Plastic>those plastic tips on shoelaces.....

Pro Bush: If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have shoelaces, our shoes would fall off and we would have to walk around barefoot. (This can also then start an argument about wether he is pro/con automobiles if he wants us to walk)
Anti Bush: Because of him we have shoelaces and thus shoelace related injuries, such as tripping and strangling. (This can also than start an argument on healthcare for the injuries and the death penalty for strangulations...)

Take any topic and do a 6 degrees of separation for Bush....

high quality voice data takes a lot of space, hi-res textures take a lot of space... I imagine those are the biggest contributors.

That first 40MB hard drive I had in 1991, let's see the Oblivion install would span about 118 of them... it would take 3.35 million 1.44MB floppies to install... and you thought Windows 3.1 took a lot of floppies.

I think it would actually take approx 3272 floppies, if it was on compressed.

1GB is around 1024MB so 4.6GB should be around 4711MB divide by 1.44MB and you get approx 3272, so not as bad as you think. slywink

The audio is hard to understand, but I do think that I heard the cop say "okay, get up, get up", and not something like, "DON'T get up, DON'T get up." And that's not sarcasm, because I was curious to see - or hear, I guess - if it was a miscommunication between the two.

I think that the title of the video, "Pig shoots American hero attempting to comply with orders," is ridiculous though.

I will agree that the audio is bad, but I do think it's possible the cop said "don't" . I played the audio over and over and it almost sounds like an audio edit. like someone looped "get up". The way it is being said doesn't sound natural to me. It also kinda sounds like the g in get up is cut off at the beginning which would happen if someone did try to edit out don't. The stupid censor sounds don't help matters.

Also, I can't see it being normal for any officer in that position asking a suspect at gunpoint to get up.

Also, (and this alone doesn't justify a shooting), the airman's tone was beligerent and aggressive. As a security officer "with more time then the cop" he should have known to not be aggressive and to just quietly comply with the officer (although it does appear that he tells his friend to be quiet).

1545  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Star Wars - Empire at War on: January 23, 2006, 01:25:08 PM
1) The rebels DO have a tank that runs over infantry, just not in the official demo. It is available with the mods.
2) I am not worrying too much about some of the issues I have, however, some of the issues are in the official demo as well. I also realize that the demo is based on a 4 month old engine and many things could be fixed.
3) The mods mostly just make extra planets and units available in the demo. It appears that you can do this by just adding them to the existing xml files. This is good because it means that mods for the full release should be easier. since the full game will have the full galaxy and units, some of my observations may be true for the full version as well, such as the huge amount that will be going on in a galaxy wide battle.
1546  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Star Wars - Empire at War on: January 23, 2006, 03:19:17 AM
There should be instructions,, I think you unzip it to a temp folder, then copy eveything to gamedata/data...That is what it is for most, but a few go in just gamedata. 1 or 2 also have a separate executable I believe.

Then just goto single player and start the demo as normal.

I does add a lot of life to the demo, but you have to be careful not to get tired of it before the full version comes out. smile

Some things I noticed so far:

1) I do not like how the computer pics your initial force of ships if you have too many. I would prefer an option to pick my starting ships as I sometimes have different things in mind.
2) Not sure if it's a bug or not, but you can't retreat space.
3) Some stations can not be completely destroyed by capital ships. Not sure if it's a bug or intentional. ALWAYS leave at least 1 set of fighters in reserve. Right now, if you have no fighters and you kill everything including all station hard points, but not the station AND you only have capital ships, you have to exit the game. (Can't retreat, can't kill some of the stations with capital ships) The marauder capital "may" be able to kill it will the barrage special.
4) Some maps are bugged. not sure if it's a demo or mod problem (Currently all planets use the same map). Some maps will have invisble buildings. They will show up in red on the map and your units will fire on them. They CAN be destroyed but it takes time. Constant bomb runs on the same spot or tanks switched to rocket mode can take care of them, but some will spawn enemy infantry/vehicles.
5) Some of the mods have the Imp AI on superhigh. They will kick your butt like nothing.
6) You can only seem to issue build orders while paused. Movement orders (including those in the galactic map) will not work. This needs to be fixed.
7) Speaking of the Galactic Map...A part of me thinks this should be turn based. In realtime, in the full game with working AI and all, I can see the map getting hectic. Way too much will be going on.  I can see 2 player battles taking FOREVER. I think it will be EXTREMLY hard to organize any sort of front line.  Some possible things to help.
A) Make the galactic map turn based. Have all builds take a certain number of turns as well as moves. Make sure the player knows the number of turns before hand.
B) Have a separate planet breakdown page. Something that has a list of your planets and the space/land defenses based there as well what is in the build que.
C) Enable a perpetual build que so I can select X-wing's,for example to constantly build without my intervention. Have an option to enable this on multiple planets at once.
D) Re-do the travel map. Right now, I think you can go to any adjacent planet. This leaves you with a lot more area to defend. Make it so that some planets need to go through 2-4 other planets to get there. Not all, just some....
Cool An orbital bombardment option would be nice, but it may be too powerful in conjunction with the bombing runs.

That's about all so far. I played for about 4 hours straight today and didn't finish one full map. I pushed the Empire back to about half the map, then because save isn't working, ended up quiting.

Overall I like the game, but it definately needs some fixes already. i only hope that some of the things I mentioned were already fixed since the demo is actually several months old (which begs the question, why not release it sooner?)

1548  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Star Wars - Empire at War on: January 19, 2006, 03:48:15 AM
I got home around 7PM and started playing around 8:30PM. I just finished the whole thing at 10:30PM on Medium.

My impressions:

The game plays very well and the graphics are real nice. I like the mixing of strategic and tactical for the game overall.

The interface seems a little off though. The zoom is way to fast and you also can't seem to click and zoom on and area or vehicle/character, so you have to zoom in and then pan around.
There is also no turn command that I can find. I do not like this at all and it seems lazy not to include it. This game NEEDS a full 3D interface (pan, tilt, zoom, rotate). There were many times in the battle that I really felt the need for a rotate at the very least.
The maps (at least in the demo) seem too small as well. This is falsely covered by not letting you zoom out too far. (There was one time where I was able to zoom out for a split second, all the way and see the whole map. Not sure if this was a glitch though.)

For some reason, the space battles DO seem more fun. I am not quite sure why though as they run almost the same as the ground battle with space graphics. (The space battles are all on a flat plane with combat taking place in faux 3D, meaning you can't control the 3D like homeworld)

The maps seem only ok to me. They feel too constrained in some parts and you are lead down a path with little to no room to go different ways. I hope this is just because of the limited map availablility for the demo.

It looks like almost all the units will have some sort of special ability which is nice, but I wonder at how useful some of those abilities will be.

One interesting feature is a retreat button that starts a countdown on the map of around 10 seconds. When the timer counts down, all of your units fully retreat from the map and take off. I can't quite tell if the maps completely regenerate or not though. I don't "think" they do, however, some stuff might be rebuilt. I also do not know if your units heal after retreating. If they do, it could be interesting and you will probably see a lot of hit and run tactics in multiplayer.

Speaking of which, there is none in the demo, which is bad. I would have like to see at least a 4 player demo. I don't know how many the game supports, but almost definately over 2 since there is a give player money command and unless you are trying to bribe your enemy to back off (which "might" work), you must be able to have allies.

Speaking of which.. smile On some maps there are "3rd Party" troops. Some will join you and seem to be self-repleshing and controlable, while some will attack you and are controled by the PC and will attack boths sides. I recommend taking some troops and visting the Sarlacc on the Tatooine map.. smile

Overall, I think I will like this game, but it could already do with afeature patch to address some of the things I mentioned.....
1549  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Anyone want to add to an XBox 360 Live Tutorial? on: January 14, 2006, 03:59:45 AM
1) Prior to getting the 360, get a cheap USB keyboard. It is worth it.
2) Make sure you link your existing Live account to a MS passport account. It's required now.
3) If you get the hard drive version (and there is no reason not to), make sure you go through it and clean out all the movies/demos you don't want, so you can clear some needed space.
4) Make SURE that your Live account is paid up well before switching. I had let my live account lapse, then paid for it the day of getting the 360. The account reactivated and I started the 360 setup. Everything "seemed" fine, but my gamertag wouldn't transfer. I could go through the whole thing and pass all the tests, but when it started to download my gamertag, I kept getting "cannot connect to Live errors". I have been waiting for a fix since 12/16 and still haven't heard anything. I called back today and spoke to a manager. He explained that they were having problems with people whose account had been re-signed and transferred in the same day. He also said that in some cases, they had to actually cancel/delete the account and give a refund. He told me he was going to send another message to MS escalated support to see if they could get a move on it. He also told me something I wasn't aware of... Such I have the premium 360 I get 3 free accounts with 30 day trial. I already started one about a week ago after my 3rd tech support call. (Everytime I call to get a status, I get someone different who tries to help me, by having me do the same things over and over. They all kept blaming my connect or network, even though I tried hooking right to my cable modem. I finally setup a new trial account to prove to myself that it wasn't on my end. The trial account works fine so far, no problems.) That leaves me with 2 more 30 days and about 2.5 weeks on this one. Hopefully it will be fixed by then.

OK, with the 1st part of the explanation..... I don't think the cash farmers are going to make that much difference for that scenerio. Every MMOG I have played has groups of people doing similiar things regularly and I can't believe that it is only, or even mainly, the cash farmers.....

As to the 2nd thing, I would think that it would actually help the economy...You have people who can't afford item A and don't have the time to invest in it, so they don't buy item A from a vendor. The vendor sells a  lot less of his items and thus can't buy the item B he wanted.

If the same group of people wanting item A bought gold/credits/whatever, then they could help the economy by buying item A off the vendor.

Now, to play devils advocate, there is a possibilty that if everyone buys credits, then the vendors don't need to make/sell the items in the first place, so that could ruin the economy, but a LOT of people would have to be buying credits....
