does it resolve names when you ping from a command prompt?  Meaning, does pinging obtain a response?

You also may want to check the gateway address.  If the computer doesnt have a valid gateway, it will not be able to communicate outside its subnet.

Ping and tracert crashes as soon as you hit enter.
However I did get it fixed. It looks like some of the Spyware I removed killed WinSock so it had to be reinstalled.
1522  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Internet connection problems on: December 27, 2004, 02:34:54 AM
I've got a laptop that won't connect to the internet. I keep getting page not found errors. I don't want to format the system.
Things I've done:
Installed a new PCMCIA NIC. NIC will release and renew IP's correctly (as will the original onboard one)
Cleaned out all adware/spyware/viruses found
Installed Opera thinking it was just an IE problem.
Checked the HOST file. It's clean.

Cannot connect to any website, even via IP address and including websites that are on our LAN.

Ping/tracert crashes so I am pretty sure there are some windows issues as well.
It is for a customer and they don't want to foramt the system at this time. I haven't had this problem before so I'm currently stumped.

Good question and I'm not sure what the answer is.  Our Forum Rules state:

Cool. I am sure I can use warning for something. Do you do windows? smile

1525  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / I got Battle For Middle Earth for only $20! on: December 16, 2004, 09:49:22 PM
I ordered 2 from Amazon and 2 from Target when they were $10. (Hedging my bets). My Target one was canceled the next day, but I never received the cancelation notice from Amazon.
Fast forward to release day. I check my amazon account and low and behold the order was canceled.
So what do I do? I call Amazon and start being a typical customer and complain. I explain that I never got a cancelation email and that I missed out on other deals because I thought this was still coming to me. Finally got a supervisor on the phone. More talking and bang, they reinstated my order for $9.99 each so I received 2 of them the other day. smile
1526  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why the hell would you take this stuff? on: November 30, 2004, 05:07:54 AM
I actually wonder if all those side effects would distract you so much that you lose all benifits of the increased focus. smile

Also, not that I knwo anything about this specific product, but many products have listed many different side effects, but they only affect a small percentage of the population., also I would hope you wouldn't be unlucky enough to get ALL the side effects at once.... or what if you got all the side effects and a super increased sense of focus....allowing you to focus in on all the side effects you were having....

Since I had heard nothing but good things about this PS, I bought one recently when I built my new system (AMD Athalon 64 3500+, Nvidia 6800 Ultra).
The plugin cables look great I have to say, however, I couldn't get my system to stay stable with it attached. I would randomly freeze within a few minutes of booting up if not failing to boot altogether.... I replaced it with a "generic" 500 watt one and bang, problem solved. While mine may have just been a fluke, I didn't want to waste time swapping it at the stoire so I just returned it...

I don't see why they should ban you. You are NOT modifying the Xbox in any way. You are just hooking up a different type of joystick for all intents and purposes. I do not believe that they would even have any legal way of banning you for buying 3rd party equipment that does not modify the box directly.
As an aside, I just received mine. I order it the day before Thanksgiving. I am going away this week, so I'm not sure if I'll have time to try itout or not....

Just find the email with the order verification, click the link to the ordwer number, login to Amazon and viola order was already canceled....

Unfortunately, there is cheating in the real tournements which is one of the reasons it was included in the game. My problem with it in the game is that it almost legitimizes cheating. From my understanding, there are plenty of players who practice cheating. Cheating happens in every sport and I disagree with it completely.

Thanks for the replies. For the record, I am looking for mostly mainstream type stuff in all catagories. CD quality is ideal, but I am not an audiofile so as look as it's clean with minimal cracking/static I'm good. Definately prefer MP3 so that it works nicely with my MP3 player....

has anyone tried one of the legal music download services? The ones where you pay around $0.99 for the legal right to download and burn a track? If so, my questions:

1) which service do you use?
2) What is the quality of the tracks? CD?Radio? etc....
3) Do they usually have every artist and song or just obscure ones?
4) anything else i need to know?

1534  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Greg Hastings Paintball on: November 19, 2004, 05:31:52 PM
OK, just finished the 1st set of tournement games.
I definately like this game and in general like it better then the Digital Paintball mod I have been playing. (The one thing the DP mod has going for it is that I can use the mouse. )
It definetly looks great and it doesn't look like they just tried to slam out a paintball game.
The different markers play differently by accuracy and by firing rate.
You have quite a few different moves to choose from:
SNAP: Otherwise known as peek, however in addition to snapping left and right you can also snap up and over a bunker.
DIVE: this is pretty cool, however it would have been nice if you could dive over bunkers (as well as having a jump button which is missing)
you can stand, kneel, and go prone and there is a turbo button for short sprints.

Throughout the game you can get additonal money and skill points. You get these bycoming in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a torunement. (Not sure what you get for last place. I'lll have to try a new game and see what happens.
Money is obviously for buying stuff. You can buy various clothes items, new markers, pods, etc... While the clothes options are nice, I can't see anyone wasting money on clothes before maxing out the actual useable equipment. The clothes don't really do much except reducing your weight minimally.
The skill points are used to upgrade your skills, like speed, accuracy, marker skill, reload skill. I think there is one more but I'm not sure
Speed lets you move faster, reloads your turbo faster and give you extra turbo.
Accuracy improves your accuracy. duh.
marker skill imporves your shooting distance while in snap mode.
reload lets you reload faster.
The singleplayer game is a series of tournements in the various divisions like rookie, amatuer, etc.. at various fields around the world.
Throughout the game you will unlock additional players for your team with various skills.
The games are elimination, center flag (one flag in the middle that you take and bring to your opponents deadzone), and capture the flag (2 flags, 1 on each end to grab). There are 3, 5, and 7 man games as well.

Cheating: This is the one thing I was most unhappy about before buying the game. I still believe that it shouldn't be promoted as part of the game. The way it works is this: When you are hit anywhere except the goggles(goggle hits are automatic outs), an onscreen popup comes on. It is U shaped with an arrow that swings back and forth through the U. At the bottom is a dark green spot, on both sides of that are a lighter green, then yellow, then orange, then red. If you hit the A button when the arrow is in dark green, it is considered a bounce. (For those that don't play, you are considered out, only if the paintball breaks on you. Many times a ball will hit you and bounce off. Just like Superman!). This I can live with as bounces are not cheats. The light green, is a cheat. It is considered a wipe that the ref did not catch. The yellow just means your out, the orange is a 2 for 1 meaning you got caught trying to wipe and not only are you out, but so is one of your teammates. Red is a 3 for 1 which is same as orange, but 2 extra people are gone.
While I did not see an option to turn off cheating in SP mode, there is supposed to be an option to turn it off there.

I haven't played MP yet, but from what I read the game play is the same as SP, but everyone has full skills. The host can change the various game types and such. I hope to try it this weekend, but with everything that came out (HL2, Vampire, etc.) and my new PC being finished today, I'm not sure. Plus I may go play the real thing this weekend as well.

The game doesn't nesescarily bring anything new to the table as far as FPS's go, however it is a very fun game, especially for a paintballer. Is it better then the real thing? Hell no!! However, it IS good for getting in your paintball fix, plus the paint is a LOT cheaper. smile
For a non-paintballer it's hard for me to say. I still think it's a good game, but if you have no interest in paintball then you probably won't enjoy it, unless you are an FPS junkie.
All in all though a great game for me and I have no regrets on the purchase.

Why are PC games one of (if not the only) medium, where the consumers are expected to be patient, expect problems etc....

If you buy a new car, music CD movie, etc.. You expect it to work...

My Steam IS working since I went the steam route a while ago, but I get upset when people say the complaints are whining and what do you expect and etc....

I expect that the product I paid for works! My money is gone. Most stores won't take opened returns for games with cdkeys/activation (They "may" exchange the discs themselves, but that wouldn't help in this case anyway.) Yes you can return it to the developer or distributer, but they made sure they got my money right away, why should I have to wait to get it back? They didn't let me pay later did they?

None of us should have to expect problems with a game, be it MMO or single player or whatever.... As was mentioned before it's a hobby and they are supposed to be fun, not frustrating....

I hope the problems are fixed tommorrow though when my new system is ready....

So would I, however, Having "Paintball- The Home Game" is a welcome addition. I've been playing the Digital Paintball mod for HL for now and I love that as well (can't wait to see if they update it for Source...) Also, playing real paintball would get real expensive real fast..... As soon as I hit the lottery though... smile

My son is going nuts bugging me about the game so it will definately be a 1st day purchase for me.
So far every paintballer who has played it has nothing but good things to say about.
However, one "feature" I am VERY disappointed in is the cheat feature. The game has cheating/wiping built into and as apart of the game. This was a VERY bad thing to do and will definately show the sport in a bad light.

thats why people want to know the deals in advance- you buy beforehand, then just go to the store w/ your receipt and request a refund of the price difference.

The problem with that is a vast majority of the deals (especially at Best Buy) are based on rebates.  Those rebates are only available on a first come/first serve basis.

Actually, the items are usually 1st come/1st serve, not the rebates. However, they do sometimes have instore "coupons" they use instead of rebates and these run out...

I believe the problem is that the EXE hasn't been released. Even the CDs you buy at stores don't have it. However once steam is turned on, and someone is blessed with it working, it will be pirated in about 30 seconds.

Really? I wasn't aware that the retail version didn't have an exe, I thought it was just a locked exe or something, since the game can actually be installed.....
I just wish they would unlock the backup option for HL2 so I can copy that and move it to my new PC at work....

There's no way Valve or Vivendi can back down on this one. As soon as they do, it makes any future threats or release date plans invalid. As long as they stick to their plan, they can make things like early releases a thing of the past...and I don't mind. So far it hasn't been pirated and I like that.

Ironically, Vampire, which was supposed to be out after HL2 has been. This may see a trend where more companies decide on the activation route, which sucks. Hopefully, they will at least provide some sort of phone activation in the future as well.
Although activation will only serve to stop early releases and not stop pirating as I am sure there will be a pirated version of HL2 bythe end of the month.

Chain stores break street dates all the time. Breach of contract matters squat, because the publishers need their games in those stores more than the stores need an individual title.

The point of street dates, generally, is to try and get product into all the retail outlets at the same time, but in the end, in the vast majority of cases, they don't mean a bloody thing.

Ever heard of Best Buy breaking a street date for a big DVD release? Yeah, me either. This was a point brought up in a similar discussion over at QT3, and I think it's a good one. BB fears the music and movie industry, and respects the street dates. Here, they show contempt for the gaming industry and try to get an upper hand on their competitors. Valve is doing the right thing by keeping it locked till Tuesday. Otherwise Best Buy is rewarded for this shitty maneuver.  F**K Best Buy.

The reality is that PC game sales contribute a much lower percentage of sales to the store compared to movies. Also, I believe that EVERY movie has a firm street date whereas PC games "might" have a street date. We also do not know if there WAS a firm street date in the contract between VU and BB. For all we know VU left it out intentionally in order to get the extra sales. I am sure that MANY people bought the game early at the stores thinking that they get the game 4 days earlier then the steam version. In fact, I would put that many people on the net bought it, thinking that Valve WOULD unlock it once it was confirmed that people were buying it.

Aren't the retailers in violation with the publisher's contract?  It's not Valve's fault that the retailers are out to make a quick buck.

In general, yes the stores are in violation, however we don't have any facts. It is possible that VU never put a strict release date in their contracts or on their shipping boxes. Maybe they never thought the game would be in the stores early enough.

Also, it is VU's responsibility to reign in the retail stores. Valve could conceivably sue VU for breach of contract(and then VU would have to sue the stores if they ahd a contract). Why should Valve suffer a loss of sales because VU is "letting" the stores sell early?
1547  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I have Half-Life 2 in my hand on: November 14, 2004, 03:06:49 AM
If Valve hadn't put in the activation for the retail version, they could have probably had an excuse to VU to activate Steam, since now VU, through their retailers, have broken the street date.

As a side note, since VU is still not letting Valve activate since they say it is not released, I think everyone should boycott the retail version completely. VU knows that there are a lot of people who would like this game at the earliest either via Steam or Retail. By "letting" the stores continue to sell the retail version, they are just trying to make sure the early adopters get their version instead of the Steam version.
1548  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 early release legal question on: November 12, 2004, 09:45:08 PM
Also, I think if/when EULA enforcement goes to trial it will be found invalid.
Some reasons:
1) Prove that I agreed to it. What if someone else installed it for me? What if I took it to CompUSA and they installed it for me?
2) Have your kids or neighbors kids install it. People under 18 cannot "agree" to anything legally.
3) As above, you are given the EULA AFTER you have purchased it. This may be similiar to paying for a new car that's non-returnable, THEN being told to sign a paper saying you MUST use Brand X for gas. The main problem with EULA's is that you have to agree AFTER you purchase.
1549  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 early release legal question on: November 12, 2004, 09:20:31 PM
Just to clarify, my post is specifically for the "leaked/early release" RETAIL purchase that some people have made.
IE: Some people have gone to a B&M store and purchased the full final version of HL2 today. They have then gone home, installed it, and now they cannot play it at all such Valve will not unlock the game. (Again, to clarify, even the retail game needs to be unlocked/authorized).

It is in this case that I am referring to the EULA not being enforceable, since there is no EULA when purchasing the game, only during install or after you open it.
Also, since most stores nowadays do not allow opened returns of software in general, Person A has spent their money on a game they cannot use nor return. Person A is out of their money. It is gone. Regardless of the amount of Inetnet knowledge that the game won't be released until the 16th, you cannot prove that someone who went to the B&M knew this. he game box only has the Internet connection as a requirement. It does not say an Internet Connection after the 16th.
If anything Valve or  VU can sue the B&M store, but they should not make a legitimate customer suffer by not unlocking the game for them.

Quote from: "Rage" Sorry, I am not laughing at you, just the thought of such a class action lawsuit. When you purchased the game, whether you realize it or not, you agree to the terms of their licensing agreements. While there is still some debate about the binding nature of EULA's, I am fairly sure the Steam purchased notified the consumer the game would be unable to play until the 16th.

1) I am not a lawyer, but I play one on PC....but I am very sure that purchasing a retail copy does imply agreeing to ANYTHING other then paying money for the game.
2) I believe I read somewhere that EULA are NOT enforceable.
3) I don't remember ever being notified by Steam that the game was not playable until the 16th. It "may" have said unavailable, but Valve also said it would be available Sept 30th 2003.

2) While a $200+ video would certainly help, I don't believe that it is required. Also, there are many places without broadband

Broadband isn't required for steam - especially if you buy the physical media. 56K is more than sufficient to authorize your copy.

Yes, there are going to be a few people who can't authorize their copy for whatever reason.  But it's a very small number - certainly not enough for Valve to worry about.

When I said "and many parents who don't want Internet access at all. Some people don't want to pay monthly fees for anything." I was indirectly referring to dial-up and anything that requires a monthly fee.

Plus the major point of the post is that right now, noone can authorize their copy. Even people who have a legal full retail version.

1553  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 early release legal question on: November 12, 2004, 03:07:26 PM
I am curious if either Valve or the retailer selling HL2 early could be sued in a class action suit by the consumers.
I am not looking for a discussion on if someone should sue and I don't need any of the just wait for the release date stuff.
From a purely technical POV, if I bought something, I expect to be able to use it. I don't want to buy a new car then find out that the official release date for the new 2005 SuperDuper isn't until next week, so while I own the vehicle and have spent my money, I can't get the keys until later.
I am pretty sure that there is nothing on the retail box itself warning you about a release date. It just says Internet required (which I STILL think is VERY stupid, some people still don't have any form of Internet access and may want to play single player, yeah, they are SOL, but it doesn't make sense from a business perspective to prevent people from buying your product. I can see those people having someone pirate a copy for them.)

msduncan, you should try to find the person who said you can pick it up and then GO BUY IT! Then try to activate it and see if it works, if not return it as defective or call Valve and complain that there is no warning on the box saying it won't work until the 16th. See if you can get them to unlock it, then gloat all over the internet.. smile

Just some info from someone who had this happen....

I had been without Live for about a year since my son connected to Live without disabling my mod chip. It wasn't a real big thing for me since I didn't use Live too much, so only he was affected. Last month was his burthday and he got some money and since he wants to play CS, Mech Assault 2, and Greg Hastings Paintball on Live, I made him buy the replacement, so we now have 2 Xboxes. We went to a local Gamestop and got a used one. When we tried to connect, it turns out that the box was already  banned. (The old owner must have had a mod chip or something). We went back and traded for a different one and that worked, so make sure you can return the used Xbox before you buy.
