Does anyone know if there is a way to get your quests to show up on the small map so I have some idea where they are?

You don't as far as I know. That was only a Vanguard thing to the best of my knowledge.

I thought WoW and SWG had this as well.... This is the only thing annoying so far. I can't find my quests too easily...

That's a good idea actually. CompUSA has an excellent return policy, if it can't do what you need.

Not anymore.. All sales are final since they are closing down for the most part....
1284  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LOTR Open Beta (REQUEST) on: March 30, 2007, 03:51:58 PM
You could also always cancel the EB one and pick it up at Best Buy.
1285  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LOTR Open Beta (REQUEST) on: March 30, 2007, 12:13:44 PM
If you had posted yesterday you could have had mine...
However, you may run into problems in the future if you do switch. When I put in the Best Buy pre-order key it actually came up as Best Buy on my account, so I don't know what would happen if you ended up using a BB key for Beta and then an EB key for retail....They may be tracking it and where you pre-order is where you have to get the retail version for the Founder's stuff...
1286  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Router help on: March 30, 2007, 11:03:07 AM
That sounds like it may work. Maybe I'll head over to compusa as soon as the discount gets higher on routers and such and pick one up.

Thanks for looking.

Ouch. Gonna suck to be you when everything goes completely digital in about 3 more years, assuming they stay on schedule this time.

Once again I'll chime in for the dlink 5300 (or the 5100 if you dont want the wireless). It's definitely done a standup job for me, although if you want to explore the custom firmwares, you're probably better off going with something like the linksys.

Another alternative would be to dedicate a box and run something like http://m0n0.ch/wall/ ... I'm thinking this would be the ultimate in control for your network, but the most difficult to setup. I have no experience here, your mileage may very biggrin

Atomic

Yeah, even though I have an HDTV, I kinda disagree with the government forcing it on everyone... but hopefully by then there we be a cheaper solution....

As for the dlink 5300, how many spots does it give for Port forwarding? That is my only problem with the linksys. I have thought about setting up a PC based router, but it is more likely for an old pc to die than it is for a "regular" router.
1288  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Router help on: March 30, 2007, 12:03:48 AM
you only get one IP from cable (and most home providers) so a router is a must.

As for FIOS, I wanted an all in one solution (TV, Internet and phone). FIOS does offer this BUT, for the TV part you need a box on every receiver/TV/VCR/TIVO/etc... if you want to get anything other than the broadcast channels (CBS, NBC, ABC, etc..)... No Sci-Fi, Cartoon network, etc.. without a box. They also charge you for the boxes. I added it up and I would need about 11-12 boxes!! (2 TIVO's, a media center with 3 tuners, 5 TV's, 3 VCR's, etc...) With cable, I can get everything except the paid channels (MAX, TMC, etc) which I don't subscribe to anyway, without a box. That made the choice easy. If they had given me the boxes for free I might have considered it, but even then it would have been a REAL pain for configuration.

Howabout they make it so 8800GTX users can actually play with Dynamic Lighting on on a WinXP machine?

Mine works for the most part. The only problems I get are period "freezes" for a couple of seconds. Then it runs for quite a while, then repeat...

I liked V and still do. I also also looking forward to the continuation of it this fall in book form and hopefully in TV form as well....
1291  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Router help on: March 29, 2007, 05:40:41 PM
The only thing I really need is more port forwarding options. I have run out due to multiple PC's with multiple programs. When I had Verizon FIOS, the router they had was pretty much unlimited, but since I had to turn that in when I switched back to cable, I am using my Linksys. If I could find a new decent router with unlimited port forwards for around $100 I would probably get one. It's not important enough for me to spend $200+ on though.

If you're a founder, and you choose the $200 option, you're saying that you expect to be playing the game for at least 20 months (at $9.99 a month).

If you think you'd like that, and can pull the trigger (unfortunately, I can't), it's a good deal.
Well, I picked up the pre-order today. I don't think I can actually sign up until the final version so that gives me a month to see if me or my son like the game at all.

I wasn't going to get this as I don't have a lot of time and didn't really want another monthly fee, however, when I signed up for the open beta, I found out anbout the Founder's option that is $199 Lifetime. The thing is though, I can't really find any details on this or if there is a "catch" or anything. Even if I don't play too often, having a lifetime subscription means I don't need to worry about monthly payments if this is actually what it is. Has anyone signed up for this and when do you actually get this option?

1296  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Battlestar Galactica - Season 3 finale on: March 28, 2007, 11:47:19 PM
Couple of things.....

1) I really liked this episode. For some reason I particularly liked Lee's speech. I also liked the ending with the song in space.
2) We don't really know that they are Cylons as we know them. Maybe they are (along with Starbuck), but my first thought is the Lords of Light. Perhaps that's actually what they are, but they all decended back to human form as babies or whatever and now that they are nearing the nebula, their true forms are starting to come out. Even though the Chief says they are Cylons, it seems more like he is just guessing as they have no other explanation. (and actually, I think the President may be a Cylon, which could explain the shared dream).
3) Guilty or Not Guilty, I think Baltar is pretty much screwed....
4) 2008? WTF?
5) After reading the interview...
5A) BSG is getting low ratings? I thought it was the opposite?

Spoiler for Hiden:
It is interesting to note that in another of Karen Traviss' books, "Bloodlines", as an aged Boba Fett searches for a way to extend his life, he hears of a clone who claims to be a Commando from the Old Republic. It could be that this is one of the original clone commandos who found a way to extend their normally twenty year life span. The book ends with Boba going after the said Commando to find a way to save his own deteroriating cloned body.

The lifespan in this spoiler seems much more in line with the rest of the EU literature, but still is a bit of a departure from what I had understood-that'll learn me to leave bloodlines sitting unread on the shelf right? smile

That explains why you didn't know...you hate Star Wars!!!! (No self-respecting Star Wars fan would leave a new SW book unread. For shame!)

Heh, like three posts ago I told you I did, and told you that they mention the Emperor's xenophobism many, many times. Its clearly the official Star Wars line on this, although as someone mentioned I am sure the many, many clones left over also contributed to the uniform look.

Remember though, the clones had limited lifespans. They weren't supposed to age at the normal rate, so in a few years, they would have needed to replace most of them. This means that the empire most likely went out of their way to recruit only/mainly humans rather than try to fill the positions as quickly as possible with anyone.

This is somewhat incorrect as well. The cloning process only accelerated their growth to a certain age, not through out the lifespan of the clones. It is commonly acknowledged in SW EU literature that clones served in the Imperial military during the time of the movies-mainly because the Emperor maintained cloning facilities to help fill storm trooper ranks (which were mainly filled by regular humans-as I stated above several times, on the orders of the Emperor himself-its not correct to label the xenophobism as a necessarily Empire-wide held belief).
I have to double check, but I believe that the latest SW book, Legacy of the Force: Bloodlines,
Spoiler for Hiden:
elaborates on this and specifically mentions the accelerated aging. In it, Boba Fett is dying, seemingly due to him being a clone, albeit a non-accelerated clone, and he mentions how none of the Clone troopers survived and that they were only supposed to have, I believe, 5 year life spans or something. I'll look it up and confirm it.

I recently upgraded my system and loaded Vista. For some reason, Vista doesn't see all of my memory. I have 4GB which is seen during POST but Vista only sees around 3GB.
I am using a BFG motherboard with an Intel Dual Core CPU. MB has latest BIOS.

Yeah, it's because of memory reserved by the motherboard chipset.  It's not specific to Windows (any other OS on that motherboard would have the same 'problem').  The chipset specs for that motherboard may tell you how much is held in reserve.  Some of the primary purposes for the IO reservations:  BIOS, PCI bus (including bridges, etc), and and PCI Express support.  PCI Express will use at least 256mb.

Is this an x86 or x64 box?  We should look up the chipset to confirm the manufacturer's expectations.
Prior to this though, I had 2GB RAM (All other specs were the same). Windows reported the whole 2GB. Now I have 4GB and Windows shows 2814MB...I added 2GB and gained only 700MB (approx)

I think that most people aren't letting go intentionally. They are accidents. Either they are playing for a while and their hands get sweaty, or they get into the game hard, or some people are cramping up, etc...
It may have been better for Nintendo to not offer a strap, rather than one that gives a false sense of security to people.
Also they are now replacing the straps. For me, if I ever find one, I will probably just get some 200 lb test fishing line or something....
1313  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: P3 robbery suspect shot dead on: December 05, 2006, 01:07:23 AM
It seems that almost eveytime there is a police shooting, some people come out and automatically blame the police. I am not saying that this shooting was or wasn't justified, but you shouldn't jump to conclusions either way. also:

1) It is usually standard procedure for any police involved shooting to have the officers involved go on paid adminstrative leave until the investigation is done.
2) Police don't always have time to react the way people would have liked them to react in hindsight. Assume the guy had a PS controller in his hands. Police are busting in on a high risk warrant (although they don't say why, it "could" be because of the assault involved with the robbery). As they bust in, the suspect is near/at the door with a black something in his hand, maybe pointing at them. They have SECONDS to react. Less than 5 seconds more than likely. If it is a gun and they don't shoot, they could be dead themselves. Many shootings are like this. Only seconds to react. This goes for anything in a suspects hands. There is usually not a lot of time to wait to see if it is a gun. Same thing for a knife. People get upset when police shoot someone who has a knife. I forget the distance/time exactly, but I think it's something like a person within 15 feet can get to you in 2 seconds or something. It may have taken you more time to read that sentance then the time it takes someone with a knife 15 feet from you, to get to you and stab you. There was a CSI recently that helped illustrate this (yes I know it's a show). One of the CSI's killed a suspect with his truck and they did a computer simulation to help show the time needed to react to the situation. Again, it was seconds.
3) At one of the E3's they had a police training simulator. The kind they use at police academy's. A lot of people tried it and a LOT of people failed it. They got to see in real time the time police have to react. I wish this was available to the public all the time as it is very educational.
4) It sucks about the dog, but as someone mentioned, the dog may have tried to protect it's master. On a high risk warrant, the police have their guns drawn. Between the suspect and the dog, there is no time to switch to mace/taser/whatever.

Well, is 29.99 a good price for 1.5mb that never ever ever works that fast? Because lately I have been considernig calling and complaining. My neighbor who is on the cheaper package gets the same speeds I do!

I just downgraded from an Optimum Online connection of 30MB to a FIOS connection of 10MB. I am paying $30/month for FIOS. As soon as FIOS TV comes around, I will probably jump to that as well.

Both of my Tivo's have begun to flake out and rather than getting new ones and paying amonthly fee, I have opted to build a Media Center PC. PhatL00t:
  • 42" Panasonic Plasma
  • Panasonic HDMI Speaker/Receiver
  • 19" Samsung WS LCD
  • HP Laptop (For someone else)

Around 8 or so the line started picking up fast and within a couple of hours was past another store in the mall and around the corner.
Around 4AM, BB came out and started handing out tickets for items. Also, because of the blue laws in the town, the store couldn't open until 7AM, so we still had a wait in store.
Lot's of list minute people trying to cut in line, but the BB people held it in check. A few got in, but still got screwed when they realized that they needed tickets to buy most of the main items.

Just want to add, If "Purchasing a console with no intent on ever playing it is, in my opinion, a dishonest act" what does that make stores whose sole purpose is to purchase it with no intention of playing it? As to your house analogy, what about real estate investors? They don't live in everyhouse they buy/sell. This is a capitalistic country. If you don't realize that by now, maybe you should. The PS3 thing is one of the basic tenents of capitalism...supply and demand. Also, as has been mentioned, we are not talking about a nescesity, we are talking about a luxury. NOBODY NEEDS A LUXURY! You may WANT one, your kid may WANT one, your cousin twice removed may WANT one, but noone NEEDS one. Also, if I put my object on Ebay and the buyers want to drive the price up how is that immoral? What if I offer my PS3 for $1 and people drive it up? I offered it at well below cost, but other people want it more. "I" didn't make it $2000, someone else did. Even if I did make it $2000, I am not forcing anyone to buy it. It seems like you are against profit/capitalism in general. If so, then there is no point in arguing, since your mind is made up.

That's a sample of dozens of reports about these wholesome folks who are just acquiring PS3s to finance their kids' education or pay for their grandmother's operations or some bullshit.  But e-bayers who post bogus bids are the ones in the wrong here.  Seriously.

And "ruin the auction system for everyone"??  C'mon... Captain Hyperbole to the rescue.

Honestly, there's no reason to be so hostile.  E-bay asshattery is a non-violent response to violent actions.  Relax, man.  You'll get your cash.

I don't think that the articles are relevant. They describe some people commiting crimes and such and also some people acting like asshats. that doesn't justify tanking an auction for someone who may or may not be one of these people. Also, remember that bad news is more popular than good news. These thing are a small percentage compared to the whole country. I talked to employees at several establishments that I went to scout out and they almost all sadi that other than a few isolated incidents with individuals who were then removed, all the people on line have acted respectable.
