One thing to keep in mind.... You bought laptops last year and are now looking to do it agin. The money you save may not be worth it if you have to buy "new" ones every year.
You can get new laptops at retail for $350-$500. Yes more than you intended on spending, but long term, probably a better bet and they'll come with a 1 year warranty.

One time, about five years ago now at a Best Buy I've never been back to, I caught the error while sitting in my car that I wasn't billed for an item. I think it was a DVD or something, I don't remember now - it's not really important. It was just a $20 item. I went back into the store, pointed out to the door bouncer that I wasn't billed for something, and wanted to pay for it. He looked at me like I was crazy and rather than have me go over to the checkout line, called the manager. He came over, saw the error, and then pulled the cashier who checked me out off the line to talk to her in the back room.
So basically, because I'm a nice guy and caught the mistake, an employee got chastized and possibly even fired over it.

You should have called out the bouncer...Isn't he supposed to check the receipts? Obviously a waste of a policy.... I have had this happen a few times at Best Buy, which helps to prove that the receipt checkers are a useless waste of time.

As for the topic, the right thing would be to return it, but I can also see where the cost comes into play. It's not a matter of it being a pack of gum, but more a matter of am I willing to be inconvienanced for the pack of gum? Is it worth it to have to get back in the car, drive 10 minutes to a store, spend time explaining what happened, then drive back home?
cost is an issue, but only in a partial sense.

I would also let them know that the charge is for building it only. Give maybe a 30 day support thing and let them know that after 30 days, there is a charge for support. Also let them know that the 30 day support thing does not include training and what not, only hardware failure.

Also, it looks like the 90% piracy rate is based on seeders and leechers numbers. What if most of them aren't ever going to play it? If a priate pirates a game and never plays it, is it still piracy? I mean, yes it is, but is it piracy used as a basis against sales?

I just see no way for them to retroactively enable this on games purchased before this new 'feature'.  There has to be some kind of warning on the box that behavior deemed detrimental on our forums could cause you to lose access to this game....blah blah.  If it's clearly labeled on the box than I suppose it's legal in a sense because you could choose not to buy it because of this.  However to ban you from playing any of the EA games prior to the one just purchased with said warning label would be borderline illegal imo.  I can't imagine that standing up in court, problem is who is going to pony up for the years of litigation it would take fighting's EA's army of lawyers.  In closing i would like to offer the following statement, which I have never used and always thought was a bit much and misguided most of the time......

Fuck EA.

They wouldn't need it on the box, just in the various EULA's you agree to when installing games or signing up to the forums. The "retroactive" part could just be that you can't login to their servers to play any multiplayer games, but for any new game, if you need to login to play even single player, this could stop you from playing that. Does anyone know if Spore requires you to login at any point to play the single player portion?

Quote from: kadnod on October 27, 2008, 06:22:31 PM

I'm not quite understanding what "banned" means in that linked-to thread.  Is it that if you cause a problem on an EA website, you get banned from all EA multiplay, forums, & other online features?  Or is it all that + you can't install your previously purchased games on another computer, even if you have "activiations" left over?

The latter would definitely make me think twice about purchasing EA games in the future.  I'd hate to lose the ability to reinstall games because an EA Mod thought one of my Spore creatures showed too much nip or something.

Basially, it sounds like all current and future EA games have activation where you need an EA account. This is also used when playing any online portions of the games.
The problem is that your forum account is your EA game account as well, so if you get banned on the forums, it effectively bans you from playing your existing and future games as well.
So if you post the wrong thing on their forums, you run the risk of not being able to play any of your EA games.

While it is in no way an equal scenerio, there is a poem or something that outlines this philosophy, but I can't rememebr the whole thing, but basically:

It affected Bob, but not me so I didn't care, then they changed it and affect Jane, but not me, so I didn't care, etc, etc.. then it ends with, it affected me, but there was noone left to care, or something like that......

Also, who says the person has to be an idiot? What if they go to the EA forums to complain about a bug in a game, but the mods decide that they don't want any negative stuff on the forums and ban them? It's not that far fetched....
1222  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: EA DRM and banning. on: October 27, 2008, 02:52:36 AM
For me, I just don't want to contribute to the slippery slope. It seems as if things are getting more and more extreme for the legitamate user, so I just don't want to support it.

Not too long ago, it would have been unheard of to have a game limit the number of installs. and now we have some severe limits and also a possibility that you could get banned from playing your game because some mod on EA's forums doesn't like you. And no, I don't think that is outside the realm of possibility. They are human and it is possible that the power will go to someones head.

Some people are also putting the burden of stopping this on other people. The whole, let the lawsuit fix it, while I buy it anyway thing. Lawsuits take time and if they have enough people buying it they could use it as evidence that their "majority" of users don't have a problem with it.

No other medium goes to these extremes..... My DVD's can be played on any number of DVD players one at a time. I can lend magazines out to friends and if I post on a magazines website and they don't like me, they don't cancel my subscription without a refund or anything.

If things like this get by, the companies will keep pushing it and pushing it. One day we WILL see DRM that says it can only be installed on one machine ever, maybe with one re-install.

I generally wipe my system once or twice a year. I also have a backlog of games that I keep going back to and playing.  Yes, there is porbably a way to call up and explain myself and get a new activation, but, besides the fact that there isn't a gaurantee for this, I also don't want to have to go through hoops to play a game I bought.

I am just worried about how far the companies will push the envelope, so far now, they have simply pushed me not to buy.

I am disappointed at missing FC2 and RA3, but, oh well... at least FO3 shoudln't have these issues and they can keep me occupied.... smile

You can rob the safes, but only during store hours smile

Pull out a gun and hold it on the cashier, then keep holding it until they get to the safe and give you the money. I had it automatically hit me with 3 stars right afterwards, so be careful. What it boils down to is this: Some people have real, actual problems getting DRM games to run, either now or in the future. And for what? DRM has no observable effect against piracy (and arguably even encourages it). What's the point in trying to defend DRM when there are only negatives and no positives, even if the negatives don't directly affect you?

You guys keep throwing crap out there like "DRM doesn't work, its useless".  Can you link to something by someone with actual industry experience/expertise that says that?  Because otherwise, I'm going to assume that the software industry is smart enough to do what is best for their product.

This is easy, just go look at any number or warez sites and see how quickly the copy protection is defeated. Sometimes on day 1 or before. It usually doesn't even slow down the pirates. The companies put in protection to keep people from pirating their games, but the pirates crack them right away anyhow. In general, the people looking to pirate software already know where to get it. It may have been different in the past, where you had to be "in the know" in some cases to get to pirated sites. Now they are all over.
Software with phyiscal dongles has been cracked
Software with online activation has been cracked
console and hand held games have been cracked

That is why DRM is useless. It's purpose is to prevent piracy and it doesn't. The days of the casual copier are over. There are probably VERY few of those people left.

If someone developed a new fire extinguisher, but it couldn't actually extinguish fires, I would call that useless too...

Amen.  I can't beleive people are freaking out over this.
Really?  It's quite simple.  It's because some of us do like to replay games years later.  And we don't like people taking a giant shit on our rights.
Holy hell.  Can you be more dramatic?  Your "rights"?  This is amazing, the imagined persecution you guys have worked up over this DRM stuff.

I look at it this way. I fired up Daggerfall on my laptop today. Yes, the old-school DOS based game that was released on 8/96 (I love DOSBox). If it was DRMed with what is out there today (server based activation, limited installs, etc etc), it wouldn't install and would have to be pirated to play.

That is my point. Some of us do like to install and fire up old games for some crazy reason. I own it, and damn it I want to be able to play it when I want to. Period.

I too replay older games after a while. Sometimes it's just to see what kind of performance I get on my new hardware. A game like Crysis or Far Cry 1/2 has loads of eye candy, that some people may not be able to appreciate with the equipment they currently have.

I'm in the camp of any copy protection annoys me. I play multiple games at a time (not simultaneously, but flip through several of them) I hate looking for discs. Also, even keycodes get annoying when I have to re-install months laters. I can usually find the discs and not the manual/box.

I WOULD feel different, if I truly thought that it was protecting the companies software, but lets be real. At least 95% of all software is cracked within the first week of release. Some of it is cracked before it is even publicly released to begin with. There isn't any copy protection that stops or even slows down the pirates. Yes copy protection can help against "casual" copying, but I would argue that, that accounts for a miniscule amount of actual people. For the most part, anyone into casual copying would very easily find the cracks for protected software.

Can anyone honestly say that they fully believe that copy protection has any real value?

even though it would make it more difficult for fast reviews and release date reviews etc. I kinda wish game companies would tell the media to bite it (sorry KD  icon_wink  ) and not give any reviewable code out until a game actually ships to retail. Yeah it might make reviews take longer, and no it won't stop piracy, but it would prevent ass hats from torrenting their stuff prior to release. And to be entirely honest people who buy on launch date would buy a game regardless of reviews, so I think it'd have a minimal impact of early sales.

This probably wouldn't be a big issue for electronic format reviews, but for print magazines it would those things aren't printed out way in advance. I "think" it takes about 2 months, which would mean that a review for a game would come out 2 months after the release, not good for them...
