Well, tomorrow is the big day....
We get to see Ubisoft's awesome DRM in the wild with the release of SH5...

Will it succeed? Will their servers die the first day? Will no one buy it? Will there be a huge volume of returns? How long before it's cracked and teh inTerNet's?

Anyone have a pool going?

I can't believe people are paying 60 bucks for ASScreed2.  Especially with this batshit-crazy DRM.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of people arent aware of the issue, some more are aware of it, but not to the full extent, and some more know, but believe they have the mythical perfect Internet connection...or a dedicated T1 to Ubisoft and the rest are Ubisoft employees trying to keep the rankings up... smile

2) If my my Internet connection goes down and I want to play Silent Hunter 5 and I can't atthat moment, I'm not gonna come here and bitch about it - because my Internet connection will be down slywink
4) Most teeth-gnashing seems to be of the "pirates will get it anyway - DRM just punishes legit users" variety.  We just have a fundamental disconnect there.  you could apply that same logic to any law - lawbreakers will always break laws, those that follow the law will be restricted.  Put another way, is the presence of lawbreakers a good resaon to dispense with law?  "Why put locks on your house?  Someone that wants your stuff will just break in anyway, and you might lose your key and lock yourself out.  It's just not worth it!"
These 2 are related so.....
With this DRM, it's NOT just about being able to start a game at any given time.... It's about being in the middle of the game and getting kicked out of it with no warning.... So again, you are in the middle of a long patrol in SH5, maybe you just spent 20 minutes or so playing... You Internet drops for even a second or two and you game exits with no save. You just lost all that time..
This would be similiar to a business app like a spreadsheet.... You just spent 20 minutes entering data, then you Internet goes down and the spreadsheet exits to desktop and you just lost all that info....Try this type of DRM with your business customers and see how long it lasts...

As for your house analogy, you're right, I wouldn't take my locks off, but using your analogy, this isn't about locks and doors to keep out theives...This is more like:
I put locks, doors, retinal scanners, dna verification, guards, guard dogs, alarms, maybe a moat.... Then I require EVERYONE (friends, family, UPS drivers, etccc) to also call me when on the way in through all of these measures and if their phone call drops at all I release the hounds and kick them back to the entrance to start over...

Quote from: Geezer on February 24, 2010, 05:53:02 AM

3) I think y'all underestimate the value of locking out casual piracy.  Now, maybe those darn kids today are all up on their torrents and stuff, and maybe they know all sorts of ways to break even the best DRM, but I suspect that there are a whole slew of folks out there that don't have a clue about how to pirate if it's not slapping them inthe face

3a) SH5 is going to appeal to sim geeks and history buffs.  Probably and older demographic, in general, and one that is not all hip to the current state of torrent-driven piracy.
This is WAY beyond locking out casual piracy! Casual piracy is pretty much when someone takes their disc and does a straight copy for a friend. This has been stopped for YEARS with even basic copy protection for those people "not all hip to the current state of torrent-driven piracy." There would be no reason for a new DRM for these type of people. Those people who already know how to get cracks would most likely also know where to get the cracked full game in the first place.

Hmm.. This still just doesn't bother me.  I have an always-on connection anyway, and I have other, better devices to entertain me in airports.  I mean, how often is the average gamer sitting on an airplane anyway?
I understand that it's irritating in concept, but in practice, a) I don't pirate games and b) I play PC games at home 99.5% of the time on a solid connection so c) I just won't get worked up over this.
until the time comes that you're internet is down and you really want to play, or it goes down and you lose a save.
at that point, we'll all try to avoid the "i told you so" replies.
You know, in this case I dont think I would be able to hold back. smile
I don't normally get worked up over DRM, but this is well beyond any reasonable DRM and bordering on insanity... The real issue is that many people will buy the game either unknowingly or with a "it won't happen to me" thing, then if/when it does happen, Ubisoft will already have the money and the customer will be out of theirs (remember you can't really return opened software anywhere). Ubi will still show sales...

Remember even if you have a PERFECT Internet connection (which I don't think is even possible.... I am pretty sure that EVERY connection has drops, even if they are only for a second or two), you also need to make surethat your connection is perfect right up to Ubi's servers AND that their servers have 100% uptime....Again, not possible....

If you lose your connection from you to Ubi, even for 1-2 seconds, you can get booted out of your game and lose all progress.. I think PC Gamer tested this by unplugging their ethernet while in AC2 and it booted them out of the game and they lost their progress....

Not that I agree with their methodology, but I can certainly play any number of online games for hours on end with no connection issues.  MMO's, action games, whatever, and I don't get dropped.  And I highly doubt it is the result of a single dropped packet, I'd guess it has to be a sustained connection timeout for several seconds at the least.
During the PC Gamer test they unplugged the ethernet cable to simulate a drop. It instantly kicked them out of the game and back to the menu and lost all of their progress. This was a real world test. Ubisoft themselves have said the same thing in interviews...
Also, Many existing online games, especially MMO's have ways of dealing with dropped packets/connections. They will give you those few seconds to reconnect or you will see lag or rubberbanding, but then get back to normal.

they are our friends.

V2.0 of this DRM will require an always on connection, an always on webcam,  and an always on PC, even when your not playing.
If it drops any of these, it uninstalls your game, if they detect someone else playing the game via the webcam, it uninstalls the game......
V3.0 will come with some sort of electro attachment... You don't want to see the placement diagram...

So is it just a DRM boycott?  I don't think I ever played a game while not connected to the internet so this really wouldn't affect me.

if your connection is down you can't start the game, if it goes down while playing the game will stop, if their servers are down you can't play.

Yep, this is the problem, there is no leeway... This isn't a random check or a once a week check this is a constant all the time check...... So imagine, going on a nice long tour and not saving for a while.... then bam, you router/modem drops for whatever reason or Ubi decides to do server maintenance or their servers go down.... You game then exits and you lose all of you progress.....

On a related note, who has the pool on when the first DDOS attach hits Ubi and noone can play?

I don't see why not.... I think that the online stores get away with too much of this type of thing. If you go into a B&M store and they have a price up that doesnt ring up correctly, they have to give it to you.... With the online stores, I see this alot, where they have a good price on something, it generates them traffic and also new leads in the form of customers information, and then they say oh, sorry, we aren't going to give it to, but enjoy your new mailing list...

I have zero problem with this. Ubi (and other pubs) are in a no-win situation.  Folks don't like it when they require the disc to be used, so they come up with electronic activation.  Then they say that there will be a patch available if the activation servers are taken offline.  I mean, Jeebus, what more can they do?

I know people would love it if the major pubs would just release digital media free of copy protection, but it just ain't gonna happen.

The problem is that this isn't just an activation feature... this is a game, that in single player REQUIRES a CONSTANT Internet connection..... HUGE difference...... Even a once a week "phone home" option would be better than this....
So you're playing your game for a while and it's been a while since your last checkpoint/save.... then bam! Your Internet drops, their servers go down, your router dies, etc.... Your game immiediately disconnects and you lose all progress... The Internet is not exactly a completely stable creature.....
Even MMO's won't do this to you.....
Imagine playing an MMO that "saves" when you level up or when you log off properly, then working for 3 hours to almost get to that next level and bam, Internet drops for a few seconds and you get disconnected, then you login and realize all of your progress is gone....
Additionally, as people mentioned, quite a few gamers have decent gaming laptops for on the road.... I know I do... For these gamers you wouldn't even have much of an option to play the game at all....

I have never bother to "boycott" a company, but in this case I'd have no choice. This is just WAY too over the top......and Sly's not here to win....

Well, when you do get back on, apparently there's a bit of customization code from CO that got left in STO.

When in space, or on the ground (the game apparently saves the colors differently), type in the following:

/powerhue 0 #
where # is a number from 1 to 360 (0 turns the color back to normal)

In short, this will change all weapon color from default to a specified color. Attached is a picture that'll show you what numbers mean what.

For example:  /powerhue 0 240 will change all your weapons to blue.

As stated above, you can change your colors in space or on the ground. And it'll save said colors differently from each other. If you want blue weapons in space and green on the ground, you can.

Have fun, as odds are this won't stay in for long.

---
EDIT: It only affects "currently equipped" things.

Remove all but 1 weapon from your ship and do - /PowerHue 0 250
Remove that weapon and equip a different one and do - /PowerHue 0 180

Now you'll have one magenta and one cyan.

Damn, missed the window on this... they should have left it, it's not game breaking or anything...

I was commiserating with -- I think Destructor? -- in fleet chat last night about the pointlessness of the anamalous data stuff. I had off the cuff suggested, "Why don't they just turn the things into Star Trek character trading cards." In-game, I guess that wouldn't make any sense. I mean, probably ST's "world" wouldn't have a bunch of trading cards in space.  icon_razz

But in terms of "fun factor," wouldn't it be fun to just be fetching ST character trading cards, trading them, trying to get "full sets" of characters from certain shows etc? Or even if they just made it so you had the option with the data inventory items to turn them IN for character cards, I think Trek fans would have a ball with that, and chasing anamalous data wouldn't feel quite so purposeless (aside from turning them in for weapons/items that you generally already have better examples of).

And if it doesn't make sense within the ST "world," so what? They've already justified umpteen game design decisions by saying they're "making a game, not a simulator." If that's the case, then they might as well say "let's do so and so because it's FUN, not because it makes any sense in the World of ST."  icon_smile
The stuff you pick up can be used for @ertain quests though... I have at least one quest that uses those items

And just one thing I don't understand -- if you're going to attempt to "limit" the number of open beta players by only letting them in via keys (rather than, anyone that can d/l the client gets in), then why do you give out more keys than you know your server can handle?

Same reason airlines overbook. The chances of EVERY person playing at once are slim if you limit to the exact number..
IE: Server can handle 1000 people, so they hand out only 1000 keys... What is the chance that all 1000 will play 24/7? Pretty slim..... They give extras so that the chance of taxing the server is more likely, like now.

This is fine, but they are doing it in a misleading way..... Like with CO, all ad's are saying time limited..... You have to go find the ONE ad that happens to have it in small print that says limited quantities.... They should just have it in big letters next to the time limit... "Limited Quantities available".. If they had done this with CO, there wouldnt have been a problem... BUT they didn't learn and are dfoing it the same way AGAIN with STO... They are NOT learning from their mistakes.... I would think that after the CO thing, this would have been foremost on their mind when offering these things....

Confirmed. You can purchase the lifetime sub after 2/1 for $299.99, but the special Liberated Borg and character slot offers expire on 2/1, as well.

I wonder if there will be another fiasco like with the CO lifetime.... I just checked something.... The email I received and the page it links to doesn't mention limited quantities, but another page linked from the first link says "While supplies last".... In REALLY small print in the fine print section.....
You would think that they would learn from their mistakes and make it BIG..... Unless they dont intend to limit it......

Anyway, I bought mine already, just in case.. smile
