1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Math question on: July 30, 2008, 09:29:26 AM
This was written at 2:00 in the morning, so I may be quite wrong:

How many positive integers less than 1000 have no common factors (greater than 1) with 1000?

The prime factorization of 1000 is 2 * 2 * 2 * 5 * 5 * 5, so the only prime factors of 1000 is 2 and 5.  Therefore, all factors of 1000 will be divisible by 2 or 5 or both.  Any number that is divisible by 2 or 5 or both will thus have a common factor with 1000.

Examples: 2 does not work, as it has a factor of 2, and so does 1000.  3 does work as its only factor is 3, which is not a factor of 1000.  25 does not work as it has a factor of 5 (divisible by 5), which is a factor of 1000.

To restate the question, how many integers from 1 to 999 are not divisible by 2 or 5 or both?

Divisible by 2?  There are (1000/2 -1) = 499 even numbers, and therefore 499 numbers are divisible by 2.

Divisible by 5?  There are (1000/5 -1) = 199 numbers that are divisible by 5.

We have to take into account the numbers divisible by both, because otherwise we have double counted some numbers.

Divisible by both?  A number divisible by both 2 and 5 is divisible by 10.  There are (1000/10 -1) = 99 numbers divisible by 10.

999 (numbers) - 499 (even) - 199 (divisible by 5) + 99 (divisible by 10) = 400.

There are 400 numbers less than 1000 have no common factors (greater than 1) with 1000.
2  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: RIAA: Ripping purchased CDs is illegal! on: December 31, 2007, 08:20:12 PM
It's not even a fair use issue.  Copying music for personal use is explicitly allowed in the Copyright Act:

Quote
1008. Prohibition on certain infringement actions

No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of copyright based on the manufacture, importation, or distribution of a digital audio recording device, a digital audio recording medium, an analog recording device, or an analog recording medium, or based on the noncommercial use by a consumer of such a device or medium for making digital musical recordings or analog musical recordings.

This was a part of a law which allowed royalty payments on digital audio media to be given to the music companies.  In return, people who made "mix tapes," etc. could not be considered infringers.  Furthermore, the law was written broadly in order to encompass future technologies, which should include computers.

Quote from: Autistic Angel on July 09, 2007, 06:07:46 PM

There have been a few games that I've stopped playing near the end because it simply wasn't fun any more.  One notorious example is Dark Cloud 2 where, after playing it obsessively for 80+ hours, I quit at the final boss battle.  The journey throughout the game had been so rewarding, I didn't see any purpose in slogging through a long, drawn-out combat sequence just to see it end.

For me it was Metroid Prime 2.  I tried the final boss 15 + times and gave up in frustration.  I enjoyed the game up until that point, but the final difficulty was too much.  Also, when I looked up a strategy on gamefaqs, I found out that

Spoiler for Hiden:
afterwards you have to escape within a set amount of time AND defeat Dark Samus again - all without a save point!

Too much for me.  Oh well - in MP 1, I didn't get past Meta-Ridley, so at least I got farther this time.  Perhaps I'll actually finish MP 3!
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [POLL]guides for games on: May 28, 2007, 06:38:46 AM
A bit off topic, but this discussion reminds me of the early 90's when Sierra set up a 1-900 number for hints to their games.  You would navigate though the menu to get a hint, getting progressively more specific instructions on what to do.  All at $2.00 a minute or whatever the price was.

God I love the internet.

8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Kid's school fundraisers - What's going ON?!?! on: December 05, 2006, 06:16:04 AM
At the risk of being flamed, let me tell you what goes on at my school where I teach.  Several years ago, the decision was made to not do anymore fundraisers.  Instead, the PTA simply asked people for money to help pay for some improvements to the school.  If people wanted to donate, they just wrote a check - no need to purchase anything.  It has seemed to work well, and it is supported by the community.  I agree that many kid fundraisers are simply just roundabout ways of asking for money.  Our choice has been to say, why not just be direct about it?

10  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Trauma Center DS FT/FS on: October 16, 2006, 04:46:03 AM
On a whim, I purchased Trauma Center for the DS last week. The difficulty just spiked up and I'm just not on the mood for that kind of challenge. Anyway, I'm hoping to trade for another DS game:

Tetris DS
Rocket Slime
Pokemon Dungeon
Clubhouse Games

or I could sell it straight up for $22 shipped. Make me an offer.

[Cross-posted at OO]

I have a copy of Auto Assault that is sitting on my desk still unopened.  I just don't think I'm going to have the time to try it out, so I'm interested in any offer for purchase or trade.  However the only games I'm probably interested in right now is either Titan Quest or Galactic Civilizations II.  Thanks!
12  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Crap. Now my wife's hooked on WoW on: January 03, 2006, 05:13:21 AM
Dear WoW Widower,

This is Arnold - Abby's husband.  I am in the same situation as you are - I gave the game to her for Christmas, and I haven't seen her since.

Here's the solution - get your own account and your own computer and play together!  Blissful marriage is bound to ensue, at least until you start arguing over rare drops.

However, be aware of this sititation.

Take care,
Arnold

I'm looking to trade for one of the following (again, complete in box with manual):

Resident Evil 4 (GC or PS2)
Advance Wars DS
Mario & Luigi DS

Thanks!
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your Game of the Year for 2005? on: December 24, 2005, 07:34:57 PM
Amazingly enough, this was the year of the PS2 for me, even though I own several gaming systems.  I've had the system since launch, and this was probably the best year with it.  My finalists:

God of War  The game that had me seriously playing on the PS2 after a year hiatus.  I am not usually excited about playing a game with lots of blood spray, but this was an exception.  I would play it late at night, so my son wouldn't watch.

Shadow of the Colossus  Game as art and epic battles.  I would play at night so I could play in the dark, and my son sometimes watched.

Dragon Quest VIII  Although I haven't finished it, it is simply one of the best console RPGs I've played.  30+ hours in and I still want to keep playing.  I play this at all times, since my son loves to watch it, especially the monster arena battles.  He also likes it when I kiss the monsters.

Since it's a three way tie, I'll have my son cast the deciding vote.  Not surprisingly, the winner is Dragon Quest VIII.

Honorable Mention  The Nintendo DS had a great year.  I was not convinced of the system, but then Kirby and Meteos came out.  Followed up by Castlevania, Mario Kart, and Phoenix Wright.  I'm not including Advance Wars and Animal Crossing, since they are currently at the top of my Christmas list.
16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / 8th grade math on: November 13, 2005, 01:31:15 AM
I got 10/10, but then again, I teach 8th grade math.

However, I felt that quiz was not representative of 8th grade math - too much algebra and not enough (if any) geometry.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow of the Colossus ending movie[Spoilers] on: October 29, 2005, 07:23:49 PM
This is non-spoilierish:  One of the things I liked about SotC was that I felt that I was riding around a real landscape.  In other games, I would be pushing the boundaries, trying to make sure I saw everything.  This world felt more "alive" to me - that is, I was concentrating on getting to the next colossus, not just exploring willy nilly because it is a game.

I also enjoyed:

Spoiler for Hiden:
how your character was growing darker and darker after each defeat of a colossus.  I wasn't sure it was happening, so I had to load up a previous save to be sure.  Great foreshadowing of the final events.

The final colossus can also be seen as the "turning to the dark side of the force" event.  First, your best friend is killed getting to him.  Then, it's the only one to actively fire projectiles at you.  He also looks like a mean son of a bitch, as opposed to most of the rest.  It takes forever to kill him.  This was the one I wanted dead by the end - I had succumbed to the dark side.

I actually had problems with this too.  First, equip your fishing pole.  Next, stand near some water.  Finally, you need to click the fishing icon in your spells and abilities screen (or drag it to your toolbar) in order to cast.  When the bobber shakes, right click it.

The idea of a mmorpg appeals to me though which I guess is why I seem to try a new one every so often.  Is there anything that is easier to sit down and play in hour spurts, where I'll actually be able to acomplish something during that hour?  And not just spend it walking from A to B?

City of Heroes would also fit your bill.  It's generally soloable, and you can get something accomplished in an hour.  There is some walking, but once you get to higher levels, you get travel powers, such as super speed, teleportation and flying.

With the exception of Michigan and Oregon, yes.  The states that passed it were Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, and Utah.

I do wish to point out that Oregon appears to have been the closest to defeating it - about 43 % voted against the measure.  Although Oregon generally votes democratic, we have had a lot of history with anti-homosexual ballot measures.  They have generally been voted down, until this year.

It is indeed a dark day.

Some things I noticed: the Doc sure doesn't seem too doctorly, fitting into my earlier theory. When he went to i.d. the body, the coroner guy talked to him like he was a nobody "myocardio infarction, a big heart attack", wouldn't a Dr know what that was? Wouldn't a Dr introduce himself to the coroner as a Dr? So why would the coroner feel the need to explain that?

Then at the airport, he seemed to think you can just transport a body between countries with no paperwork, as a Dr wouldn't he have gotten the paperwork right, if nothing else?

Also, the manager at the hotel kept calling him Mr., instead of Dr.

I don't normally gush, but this was the best episode of a TV series I've seen in a long time.

One wonders what will be revealed about the other characters - perhaps even the blonde woman will finally seem sympathetic...
