It feels like DAOC sorta, excited!

Elementalists and Thieves will own at launch (should make you happy Hark), and I like the mechanics of Boon and Condition trading during fights. It's almost like two wars going on...the tab combat scrums, and the debuff/buff wars between guardians, necros, mesmers, etc.

I really want to love Enginneer, but it just feels so weak, even at lvl 80 pvp. Their skill set just feels so jack-of-all-trades, that nothing stands out. Mortar strike hits like a noodle, turrets are weak...hmm, maybe I'm missing something.

Last meeting over. Comps out the door!

Come to me GW2! Its time for glorious PvP! Screw PvE content, I want DAOC back!

Kath, how hard you rate the recipes in that book? I'm a terrible chef, and my wife isn't much better, but those amazon reviews have my interest peeked. 1-10, what'd you guess to execute properly?
8  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: August 01, 2011, 11:13:27 PM
Think of them just like party members in every other Bioware game. Their own inventories, personalities, specs and backstory w/ questlines.

Each of the 8 classes has enough companion characters to make a "balanced" party, so you could in theory solo your own instances. They all get a "tank", a "healer", "ranged", "melee" etc. And yes, each of the companions is distinct for each class.

That's why you can't kill them off, because they held fundamentally define your character, your build and your approach.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Earth Defense Force returns! on: July 04, 2011, 01:26:29 PM
- The ending gets "longer" each difficulty you beat it on.
- Campaign Remix reseeds each level with new mob patterns. So instead of 3 hectors, you'll get 2 mantis or such. (and alot of wasps haha).

Overall, the game and engine are superior to part 1. Content is where it's inferior. The 4 suits are nice, but after beating hard twice yesterday (trying to farm for an inferno run), you'd have to grind the game 6+ times to level up each suit. The same 15 missions, new enemy placements or not...the fun wears off.

That said, I got to play with a nice assemblage of people yesterday online...best session involved a tactial, jetpack and my heavy. Forced to use fall-back tactics, kiting and refined weapon selection, the boss bottles feel like WoW-style raids at Hard. Inferno, I can't even guess.

Speaking of heavy, that armor feels overpowered compared to the other. The class has shields, an AOE-bomb, AOE-Damage Shield, 175+ ammo chainguns for pretty serious damage, and massive rocket and grenade soak damage options. I understand the need for a tank-ish class, but it got to the point where my two partners just stood back and let me tackle everything since they'd die so much or not do enough damage. It's not my playstyle, it just a really overpowered armor, IMO.

Overall...much better engine, same silly style, just a let down on content. I'm sure VV has tons of DLC planned, but still...I feel like they made 30+ missions with the intention to sell half in 3 DLC packs for more money. and I hate when developers are that transparent.

Anyone wonder what the hell happened to this?

I think this is the most vivid example of a major studio working on a re-launch of a classic franchise and it hitting the masses with such a massive backlash that they seemingly went back to the drawing board.

I mean, last word about it was Feb after the creative director quit? Wonder what it is these days...

15  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy on: February 13, 2011, 02:29:03 PM
The Heroes is excellent and serves as a worthy "epilogue" over the original trilogy. Most of the surviving characters are around in some way, and Abercrombies writing is improving. Happily, he's able to balance more characters (upon rereading, the first law trilogy got a little flat), and the battle scenes are just as good.

Only disappointing thing (sorta) is it still follows the arc of most of his other books, which left me wanting something flushed out in that plotline (see Spoilers).

Overall though, 9.0/10

Spoiler for Hiden:
It's getting kinda old that every characters journey through politics, war, etc always ends up somehow fostered by Bayaz or the Prophet. Their war is always on the periphery influencing everything, so I've gotten to the point where I want that to be explored, and not seeing events that are all part of a grand design.

16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space 2 on: January 31, 2011, 02:06:48 PM
Ya Teg...I'd consider the Ripper my favorite weapon this time. So many situations are just spamming tons of guys at you, allows some strategic moving to a corner, and just making a blade wall they all run into. The other guns seemed fun, but never as useful.

Stasis is much more important in this than in the first. Hell, most fights toward the end need stasis just to have a shot.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space 2 on: January 31, 2011, 01:36:10 PM
Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm fully with TiLT...this game goes straight downhill toward the end. While it's got great setpieces, the overall balance and experience..not sure if I liked it more than DS1. That said, can someone help with these questions:

1) Im confused about the Marker in EarthGov. Who built it? I was assuming EarthGov off of Issac's memories, but then what made it so special compared to the tons of little ones everywhere. Why is that the beacon that calls all the necros to it?

2) Whats the ending credit surprise?

20  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: A Cataclysm coming to WoW: Direct X 11 on: November 24, 2010, 04:34:03 PM
I really like that all the new quests and revamped zones are built as "sequels" to the original zones...characters and events from up to the Lich King are seeded inside, and they still build the newbie progression against the new fiction.

Bravo to Blizzard as usual, they just milked another 2+ years outta this game.

23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Force Unleashed II on: October 29, 2010, 04:56:08 PM
Having finished, I think its very obvious something happened halfway through the development of the game. It literally just becomes "Wow, we are out of time or ideas" and everything gets recycled and it goes downhill fast. The ending is very....abrupt? I think there are half the levels of the first one, although, admittedly, they are all solid.

The graphics are great, the game is still fun, but there's just not enough of it. I get why the reviews were so down on it, but it's not in the 4 or 5 range, its more a 6.5, maybe 7.

A very worthy rental. But thats it.

24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fable 3 on: October 26, 2010, 11:20:42 PM
Am I going crazy or does this game not an actual mini-map of where you are? I mean an accurate one, not the stylized Sanctuary version?

25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow on: October 10, 2010, 02:17:49 AM
I cant stress enough how much polish and effort went into this game.

The environments and levels are absolute masterpieces. The combat, like Kevin said, starts very GOW, but becomes a Ninja Gaiden-esqe system of counters and throws. The difficulty is tough, but on a very reasonable curve. Its also at least 15+ hours long...50 levels, each unique with puzzles, etc. Cinematics, voice acting and just its sheer sizzle....bravo to MercurySteam.

Beat it this morning, into Chapter VI in Paladin mode. Best game I've played this year.

9.5/10

This whole thing is going to be a textbook example down the road. I'm not sure if its going to be able gaming or PR practices  icon_biggrin

Those reviews are generous considering its still beta.

Repeat after me: The. Game. Is. Not. Beta.

It doesn't matter if the game is polished so much that you'll go blind from looking at it or if it's so filled with bugs it'll format your HD when you install it. Once it's been released, it's NOT beta.

Agreed, but I believe what Pharaoh meant was that the game is in a state that you would typically find only during a beta test.

I realize that of course, but the point is that the term "beta" is being used as a synonym for "buggy" when it really refers to a specific stage in software development that ends before the game is released by definition. People should just say what they mean without obfuscating their own words with clichéd stuff like this.

Clichéd my ass. Beta is software not ready for retail release. Not Gold. Not Master. Not Release Candidate. My usage of the term was perfectly valid.
31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elemental: War of Magic on: September 02, 2010, 03:21:52 PM
Those reviews are generous considering its still beta. When a company has a "Master Bug" list that details every. single. piece. of the game to be broken or not functioning correctly, that's embarrassing.

Waiting to see the latest "Indie Dev, Me Scuzi" from the company while they continue to charge full price.

Ya its nothing special gameplay wise. The story isn't so hot, but it drips of polish.

That's helped my enjoyment a ton. My wife walked in when I found my first playboy, and instantly was like "what the hell are you playing?". "MAFIA!". "Ooookay..."

Loved it Tongue
34  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elemental: War of Magic on: August 26, 2010, 02:15:30 PM
There are some SERIOUS fanboi blinders going on in this thread and at QT3. The game was sold for 49.99. It is incomplete. It is not gold. It might be in a few months. Is that known for sure? No. Is it a piece of shit now? Yes.

I tried to enjoy it last night, again, but its very simple: It's not finished. It's got a ticket list of bugs at least 40 pages long, and so many polish and UX lapses its a joke.

If you play the indie-dev card, you get certain benefits. If you play the full price for a game card, you get certain benefits. Can't have both.
People defending this game should be ashamed of themselves.
35  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: True Blood Season 3 (spoilers) on: August 23, 2010, 02:12:43 PM
This show is a mess. Way too many characters, way too many plot threads, and all of them going no where fast.

Luckily my wife read all the books so she's able to tell me what is going on, but we agree that it's become a parody of itself. Every actor has 3 scenes an episode...they give you 1 sad scene, 1 crying scene and one plot advancement scene. And because there are 4000+ characters, its like a Benny Hill of soap opera bull.

Sam is now a former killer? Lafayette and Jesus are now Shaman/Warlocks with Sorcerer ex-grandpas! The Hot Shot Panthers are coming! Witches with abortion drugs working at the bar! The Authority is watching you through webcams!

...and all the while, Sookie, Tara, Bill are becoming easily the most boring characters on the show.

and btw, am I the only one noticing that Anna Paquin is not aging so well? She's looking pretty terrible this season.

37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dawn of War 2: Retribution on: August 18, 2010, 08:18:12 PM
Okay...PIRATE Orcs.

Right there I'm sold. And ya, its obviously going to be Inquisition/Grey Knights/etc for the new race.

However, by making the single player multiple race possibilities, I hope they don't ditch the Diablo aspect of the previous two entries in DoW2. I loved picking up and equipping new loot, evolving my skill trees, etc.

If they are cool enough to actually build that in, and fully flesh it out for each race, then I might actually think this expansion could topple Dark Crusade for best. EVER.

I love this game. Ya its still Starcraft 1, but the amount of polish and care that went into every piece of it are just mind numbingly good.

Tons to do as well. Can't wait to play more this weekend.
