Congratulations to 'The Dark Knight' on becoming the BIGGEST OPENING MOVIE of all time: Over $155 million dollars this past three-day weekend! It couldn't have happened to a greater film too!

I'm tired as heck after catching a 1130pm screening with my best friend in Pittsburgh. We were both blown away by it. This is not just a good superhero flick but an epic piece of filmmaking. It's gonna take a second viewing for me to fully digest it's awesomeness. Ledger is scary-awesome and don't be surprised if he wins a bunch of postumous awards. The scriptwriting is astounding and Nolan's direction made it the most realistic, dramatic movie of it's kind.

My Iphone has become a hit at my workplace. We just had a group lunch party to say goodbye to one of our co-workers and when I took out the Iphone many people wanted to check it out. The slick YouTube functionality seems to have starstruck a couple of them. Three of them say they will get one right away.

I had a rare power blackout at my place last night, but the trusty Iphone kept me connected to the net even though nothing else was running. The Iphone display is so bright I could find my way around my pitch black apartment just by bringing up the Home screen. A neato flashlight! who knew?!
3085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: E3 08 Coverage Begins! on: July 15, 2008, 08:46:03 PM
I gotta echo Weidner's post. After reading about all the three major console conferences, there wasn't anything I could get excited about. The XBOX 360 has won the war for the hearts and minds of hardcore gamers with their coup of FFXIII. There's really no reason now to buy a PS3, unless you must absolutely play 'God Of War 3'. (Home? Yawn.. It's not a game, but social networking disguised with 3d graphics. LittleBigPlanet is too creative for its own good.. is there even a game there?!). Nintendo, on its own way, has become the place for casual gamers, and they've gone on the direction most feared when the Wii was launched with all its gimicky Wiimote stylistics: Wii Fit, Wii Music, Wii Resort. Nintendo won't announce any new installments of their historied 1st party franchises for at least a year.. and hopefully it won't be too late to dust off the Wii collecting dust on people's living rooms. I don't want a Wii now. What's the point? It's a 'party game' casual machine that doesn't challenge the gamer's minds or adventure instincts.

All the excitement seems to have come back to the PC. Just look at PC games looming on the horizon: Fallout 3. Starcraft 2. Diablo 3. DC Universe Online (surely, that's gotta be on the PC as well as the XBOX). Warhammer Online. Spore, even. Dawn Of War 2. And more.

Wake me up when the head of the big 3 console makers actually get back to making games worth a damn instead of trying to be an end-all for all entertainment with social networking bullshit 3d worlds and movie downloads. I want games damnit!!

My wife pulled the trigger on one today after mysteriously "spilling coffee" on her old (very basic) phone. This will be the first time in our history of knowing each other that she has ever owned a better piece of technology than me, and it really grinds my gears!  icon_biggrin

Our local AT&T sold out Saturday, so she placed an order and in theory it should be available in 1-2 weeks.

We played extensively with the 3G in the store. I was familiar with the original iPhone since my brother-in-law has one, and let me borrow it on occasion just to play around with. The app store was AWESOME, and I can see myself spending a lot of time and money in there once I can wrest it out of my wife's undeserving hands. I only got to play with the GPS briefly, and have read that it's a tad slow to update, but I think it would still be ultra-handy.

Not helping matters is this little story:

The other day I was on a business trip, and got stuck in Atlanta for 11 hours. I finally made it to my destination, completely exhausted, and realized I did not know which Holiday Inn my company had put me up in, out of several in the area. A nice young lady noticed my frustration, and asked me what was wrong. I told her the situation, and she whipped out her iPhone, punched up Google maps, and figured out which hotel was closest to the airport. She then looked up the number and I was able to call and verify that it was the correct one as well as get a shuttle sent out to pick me up. It was like something out of a freaking Apple commercial. And it was AWESOME!   icon_biggrin

Ohhh, yes, thanks to Yellowqueen we shall finally spread the dominion of Apple onto Yellowking. Our grand plan is coming together!

Oh yeah, highly recommended FREE game, Aurora Feint.  As someone posted elsewhere I almost feel guilty playing such a polished game for free.

It's kind of like Puzzle Quest mixing bejeweled-esque puzzlery with RPG elements.  The coolest thing is they make great use of the accelerometer so you can, and have to, do stuff by rotating the unit to get pieces where you want them.  I haven't figured out the nuances of the game but it's certainly addictive and man it looks really deep for a free game:

Thanks! I'll check that one out later today. So far, I'm loving the Jott app. It's free and it's basically a voice-operated Note/To Do list app. You record a short note and the app sends it out to Jott, gets it transcribed and it's added to a To Do list. A pretty cool way to jot down last minute tasks and info you may need.

I got mine yesterday. Very neato device. I've been playing with it all day long while visiting Tareeq and his wife in NC. The GPS is spot on--Even with your car racing down a highway it can pinpoint your location. I have also used it to locate a pharmacy nearby here in Durham; again, spot on. Tested the camera this morning while shopping at a local Farmer's Market with Tareeq--Very nice photos regardless how some are decrying that Apple didn't upgrade the camera with the 3G. Youtube access is clear as day; I will actually be browsing YouTube much more as a result of the nice access and resolution you get to videos with the Iphone. So far, I'm very impressed with the phone.

I purchased the $199 8GB version. I had to wait 4.5 hours in line at the Apple Store in Towson, MD, but it wasn't that bad. Not as bad as the fool who waited there all night long from the night before (I saw him lining up before the store closed the night before, then saw him be the first person to get his Iphone the next morning. He waited 11 hours!). I went home, got a good night's sleep, and headed to the store exactly at opening time at 8m Friday. There were about 130 people lined up at that time, and knowing that the Apple Stores were getting at least 1k Iphones a piece, I decided to line up. Even though they were letting people into the store 10 at a time, it still took 4.5 hours to get in because the phone activation process got stalled twice due to the very high demand on the Apple servers from so many phones being activated on the same day (Why isn't that these big companies never know how to properly brace themselves for such high demand online launches?!). It was actually kinda fun. I quickly bonded with 4 people who were waiting inline with me, and we spent the time conmiserating and waiting faithfully; one of them was a fellow Social Security Employee who waited with his 6-month old son on his arms the whole time. Another was a 70-something Grandma who was getting her phone to put on her family's family plan. I got my Iphone by 2pm, activated it at home on my Macbook Pro, and got on the road to Tareeq's.

I haven't had a chance to fool with the App Store much yet since I got to refresh my Apple ID info before downloading and installing Apps but will be getting on that later on. So far, very pleased with my new Iphone 3G.

Meant in that sense, I'm sure there are tons of studies that say coffee is good for you in some ways. But in the end I hate how it tastes, don't like how it makes peoples breath smell like it's coming out of a sewer and most of the time people dump so much shit in it that negates whatever effects it does have. That and the constant ups and downs of caffeine gets tiring to the point that you become addicted to it and and need it to stay awake at all.

An outstanding final; perhaps one of the best in Wimbledon's history. For starters, it was the longest final on record: 4hrs 48 mins. Two rain delays stretched it close to 7 hours after the match was scheduled to start (that's another great thing about the match. Next year with the new roof on, there will be no more rain delays on center court). Federer and Nadal were evenly matched, and both were at the top of their prowress. They were playing with amazing stamina even in those last games. I was rooting for Nadal to take it, and when he finally did--on the 5th set 9 over 7--I could tell that the kid (he's only 22) was having one of the happiest moments in his life. And deservedly so--he played his heart out. No doubt about it. Mcenroe's commentary after the game was spot on--One of the best matches I've ever seen and one that will bring attention worldwide to the sport.

I took my router out of the equation this morning, and my net connection is working again. It turns out the modem is actually fine after all. I don't know if the router is dead, needs a reboot, or needs a firmware update; I'll get on that one tonight.

Twice now over the last year Iíve had my connection suddenly go dead with no activity showing on the modem.  Both times the router had stopped working and I had to reset the router to its default settings to get it going again.  Even rebooting/unplugging the thing would help.

The weird thing is that both times the router stopped working, I hadnít changed any settings in over a month.  Other then the network name and passwords, I leave most settings at their default.  Iím using a Linksys WRT54G (couldnít tell you what version since Iím away from home) with the latest official firmware.

Iím not sure if the hardware is somewhat faulty or thereís something I need to do with my settings.  Just strikes me as odd though since usually when my network dies itís because Iím playing around with the settings or trying out new software.

Yeah, the ultimate culprit of all my trouble was an unresponsive router; a Lynksys also, like yours, Win95. Last night, the PC ethernet problem resolved itself. I had left my PC connected to my router, and the router was rebooted on Tuesday(hard rebooted.. it had to be unplugged from electricity before it responded again). Last night, before I went to bed, I noticed my PC was automatically downloading updates. Sure enough, it's net connection was back on.

I'm glad I didn't waste an early morning trip to the Comcast lounge to return the modem. I've had that Lynksys router for over 5 years also. I think perhaps its time for a router upgrade; next one will be wireless, I think.

I'm thinking there might have been a thunderstorm this past Saturday night and it borked both the router and the PC net card (though I do have a surge protector.. and that's fine.. so I'm mystified). In any case, I do have net access back on at home.

Do you have a surge protector on where the data jack comes from the wall? I've heard of otherwise protected systems being blown because a surge came down the phone line into the PC.

No, I don't have one of those surge protectors. But the good news is that it looks like it wasn't a surge--I resurrected the router last night. It just needed to be unplugged from the wall and given a reboot by accessing it's setting thru my Macbook. My PC's ethernet card is going to be the last piece of the puzzle to solve. I'll get on that tonight.

I now think the reason why I thought the modem was dead was because on early reboots the blinking activity light didn't come on as a result of the router needing a hard reboot. Although the configuration seemed dead, it wasn't.

Is your modem connected to a router?  I've had issues where I've needed to give my router a reboot as well after an outage.

yes, it is. Though the modem is connected straight to the cable connection and the router comes after the modem and in between my two computers. I'm just concerned about the lack of activity in the modem. Even if the routher were to be borked, there should a flashing activity light on the modem when it is rebooted. I'll try taking the router out of the equation tonight and see if that improves anything.

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this. My home Comcast high-speed internet connection mysteriously died on late Saturday night. The modem is on, it says the connection is active and that is both receiving and sending, but the flashing activity light is constantly off. I called Comcast last night and was told to give the modem a good reboot by unplugging it for 15 minutes. I did that--in fact, I've rebooted it several times in the past 24 hours--but no dice. As of this morning, it was still dead.

I'm wondering if Comcast upgraded something about their network that now the 5+ year old modem doesn't recognize their new carrier signal. I'm calling Comcast again when I get home from work tonight.

I watched it yesterday, and I sincerely hope many of you have seen it or wil see it, because 'Wall-E' is yet another touching, astounding magical modern masterpiece from Pixar. The character work and level of animation in the film are phenomenal. Wall-E was such a fully-realized character brought to life without hardly any dialogue; by the end of the film I had that big fat tear in my eye during that climactic scene between him and Eve. I also very much liked the satirical speculation about the future of mankind as fat, consumeristic oblivious fools that needed to be woken up. The secondary robot character were also very likeable, specially that little robot that keep cleaning after Wall-E's tracks all through the movie. I loved, loved... loved this film, and will watch it again on the big screen next weekend. I highly recommend you go!

Looks freakin' great.  I might have to get Diablo 2 and play through it now...

Same here. I gotta finally give D2 some love after seeing what's in store for D3.
