3042  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Macbook Pro battery go boom :( on: July 30, 2008, 03:16:38 PM
My Macbook Pro is about to turn 2 years old in a couple of weeks. Well, my honeymoon with Apple is over. This morning when I went to use the laptop I found the most horrendous sight--the laptop battery is visibly deformed. In fact, it's actually ripped open and you can see the insulation inside. It's a hideous sight. Apparently, it became overheated and just bursted open.  icon_frown

I use that laptop for almost everything productive these days. I did a bit of digging on the Apple support forums and apparently Macbook Pros made around the time I bought mine had a known problem with their batteries. Apple states that they will replace the battery for free within two years of purchase. Looks like I'm in for some hardware hell as I try to get Apple to replace that battery at the end of my two year period.

Here's what you do, hep. Go to a Bennigan's this weekend. Order a couple of Monte Cristo's. Then, after feeling satiated by their grease goodness, comment to the waitress about how sad you're about hearing about the chain closing but how you would really like to meet the amazing staff behind the culinary masterpiece you just ate. Ask to meet the Chef. Be walked out back.... the proceed to kidnap him so that he may cook Monte Cristo's for you for life.

Or.. you can just ask/beg for the secret recipe!

I think they closed effective immediately, or that was the gist of the article I saw.  Steak and Ale restaurants too.  I can't remember the last time I've eaten at either, personally, but that sandwich does look tasty.

Mmmm, the chain closing immediately does put a crimp to my plan.

I understand that as law abiding citizens we are more concerned about private property than during our mispent youths. Is everyone here saying they didn't do some of this stuff while growing up? I'm not proud of it, but I did my share of egg throwing and random destruction. One time the guy caught me and dragged me over to his car to clean the egg off.  icon_redface

I never intentionally broke a window, stole from a parked car, ran shopping carts into parked cars, etc.  In the fall months we would occasionally go "tick-tacking", which usually consisted of throwing handfulls of corn at neighborhood houses and then running off into the dark, but outside of that we were too busy playing basketball, football, baseball, bicycling, etc.  I also worked 30 to 40 hours a week at a local grocery while in middle school and high school, so there wasn't much time for me to get into trouble.  I actually learned to dislike people who found vandalism to be entertaining because it typically meant problems for me at work, like wiping soap from the windows, cleaning up broken glass, etc.  Granted, I did once accidentally set my friend's back yard on fire (yes, the whole yard), but the fire department made sure to keep it at bay on our behalf.   ninja

Yeah, but we're aching to know is when did you get your first manicure and facial?  icon_razz

If they were going to do another movie, shouldn't they have done it years earlier when even fans like me gave a damn? It's ironic that a much beloved series in its own thread, isn't getting more of the love that even some fifteen-year-old videogame that most of us barely have heard of receives but which some gamers still revere. Sigh..........

Blame Chris Carter. He's the main reason why both the X-Files TV and film franchise went to crap. The series TV got overextended to insignificance once Fox kept throwing money at Carter to keep it on the air long after both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson had gotten tired of playing Mulder and Scully. Then the first film was a modest success, but instead of getting a sequel in track two to three years later, Carter sues Fox over residuals over the series TV syndication. All that is why we're here ten years after the first film with this lame theatrical effort, which is getting panned in spades all over.

I was a huge fan of the TV show in the 90s, and I liked the first movie. Unfortunately, I think Chris Carter ran the series into the ground. I too didn't bother to watch after the 5th season. The movie is indeed one of their stand-alone 'monster of the week' episodes. Personally, I preferred the mythology myself. I may check it out this weekend; we shall see. But, alas, I too think this is the last we'll ever see of Mulder and Scully.

Side note:  It was interesting to see Zeus back in action slywink

okay, my dumb question of the day:  what/who was zeus?

'Tiny' Zeus. The tall, scary-looking black actor who played the inmate in the ferry that talks the detonator out of the cops hand. He was in the first 'Friday' film. That was a very nice cameo role he got in TDK; well-done.

Get Jott. It's an app that takes voice 'notes' and transcribes them back as text. It's free. Another free good one is Midomi. You can hold it up to an unknown piece of music, or sing/hum into it, and it identifies the song for you. I also have the free Facebook and MySpace apps. Vicinity also is a good one. It's 3 bucks, and what it does it gives you a listing of eateries, bars, and other such necessities in whatever area you may be in.

Johnny Depp as The Riddler would be fantastic follow-up to Ledger's Joker.

Don't forget that Joker also promised Batman he would make him break his one rule before everything was over (his one rule is that he will not kill).  When Dent died, Joker won.

Ding!Ding!Ding! I like how the whole movie is an epic battle over Harvey Dent's soul. The Joker really puts the screws to Batman. Although the movie is long, it's extra half hour is warranted in order to resolve this battle.

Do we know that Nolan will be doing another film?  Especially as Bale is now doing Terminator movies?  Add to Ledger's death to that and I'd think he'd let the franchise go and use it's success to do his own brand new material.  But then, maybe Nolan is an actualy Batman Fanboi (lord knows he did the films right) and wants to do more Batman films.

BTW, I loved the quasi sons of the bat sort of thing that Nolan did.  That sort of work exemplifies the touches to move the plot along that I think really show him off in small ways.

Nolan will come back for the third film. You can bet on it. This one is going to be mega-succesful at the box-office. I think it'll easily break 300 million and keep on going. Warner Bros will want Nolan back. Christian Bale will be back too, regardless of the new Terminator movies. Bale know this is a massive cash cow, in the same way Robert Downey Jr is now priviledged. The success of this movie will free Nolan and Bale to do whatever the hell they want in the future, even if it bombs at the box office.

The same would have benefited Heath Ledger, and that's the tragic side this movie will always carry. Heath would have been huge after this movie. Hell, he'll be huge posthumously. But I get misty when I see how great his Joker is and how he would have carried that talent to other movies. It's truly a loss for the movies.

catwoman has been done to perfection already, though.  bringing her back to the batman fold at this juncture would be a step down for the stellar franchise, imho.  sure, the dark knight is a great film and nolan an accomplished and talented director, but halle berry made the catwoman her own and the penultimate battle between her and a nigh invulnerable sharon stone (resulting from perfume, no less!  what brilliance!) easily beats out the subdued madness of Ledger's Joker.

 icon_lol icon_lol

If Nolan is smart, he won't bring back The Joker for the third movie. Ledger just pwned that role, and recasting it will be a bitch. I think Two-Face is dead... at least that's the impression the film gives at the end, but if he comes back let Aaron Eckhart play him again since he did such a great job. So who will then be the villain or villains for the third film? My guess is it'll be a combination of Catwoman and The Riddler. I agree with those above who mentioned that villains like Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze are too over the top. The Penguin is too eccentric and very cartoony. Since Nolan is avoiding the gothic/cartoony trappings of Batman, I think it would be best to do Catwoman and The Riddler.

I'm tired as heck after catching a 1130pm screening with my best friend in Pittsburgh. We were both blown away by it. This is not just a good superhero flick but an epic piece of filmmaking. It's gonna take a second viewing for me to fully digest it's awesomeness. Ledger is scary-awesome and don't be surprised if he wins a bunch of postumous awards. The scriptwriting is astounding and Nolan's direction made it the most realistic, dramatic movie of it's kind.
