Transformers:  I see so many lamenting this film, complaining about the close-up action sequences, or Shia LaBeouf's performance, but I'm not ashamed to say that my wife and I effing love this movie.  The action is kick-ass, the animation is phenomenal, Shia LaBeouf plays a funny and quirky character, and while some of the dialogue is painful (although have any of you actually listened to the dialogue in Star Wars, given the film's overwhelming praise), it gets a lot of play in our house, mainly when we want a fun action movie to shake the pictures off our walls.

Thank you. I hated Michael Bay as much as the next guy, but he did a good treatment of the Transformers franchise, as much as people bitch about Shia or the action sequences. I'm now excited for the sequel and think the franchise is in good hands.

Movies I like that everyone else hates:

Horror movies (pretty much everything ranging from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Evil Dead to Shaun Of The Dead to Hostel to The Descent and many in between. I don't care if people pass judgement on me for 'being sick' or whatever faulty psychological profile they append to horror movie fans. I love me a well-done horror flick.)

David Lynch movies like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and even Inland Empire. I *get* what Lynch does in his movies even if it turns off 98 percent of the population. While we are it, David Lynch's Dune wasn't half bad, and I detest the cheesy Sci-Fi channel Dune miniseries.

The recent Neil Marshall 80s tribute sci-fi horror flick, Doomsday (which is out on DVD). I don't care what people say--it's one hell of a hilarious, entertaining B-movie flick.

Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. People at large missed the point of it--an action popcorn movie sequel which tips its hat to cheesy 40s movie serials. The Indiana Jones series was never meant to be 'high class action' or whatever the hell people expected after 'Raiders'. They were always supposed to be over-the-top action sequences, funny one-liners, non-stop fun, and I thought the last movie got all these things (mostly right)

I got some more, but let me stop here for now.

These are pretty damn funny. They give hepcat a run for his money on the one-liner department. For example:

Found a driedout gerbil carcass at the bottom of the box—AND it had been shaved.

CAN-O-SNAKES prank is tooFUNNY—though I DON'T recommend its use in Nursing Homes

Dating sucks, Isgrimnur. I'm in the same boat, and have had women fade away they same way yours did. Typically, non-return of calls/emails/text-messages is the way they play the game. The way I react to that is, I don't give any woman any exclusivity during the first three months. I recommend any guy to still be dating other women during that time.
3006  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Guild Wars summer '08 resurgence on: August 12, 2008, 03:30:27 PM
Well, this GW resurgence is quickly becoming a fever (again!) for me. I logged on last night. Helped Zaxx, Tareeq, Craterus, and Milton do Gates Of Kryta on Hard Mode. Then, Tareeq, Milton, Craterus and me tried some Team Arena action, but we got creamed (we are really rusty when it comes to the PvP that's not Alliance Battles). After that, Milton, Fellstrike and me did AB'n for at least two hours. We won most of those matches.

I gotta contain myself.. so don't think I'll be on tonight.... well, maybe I'll be on late night. I really want to work on my Asassin and NightFall... and elite armor for my main monk.. and more AB'ng. Ugh! I gots the fever!
3007  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Had to put our two dogs down today.. on: August 12, 2008, 03:20:55 PM
You want to be really mad at someone for cruelty to animals? How about this guy?

At-home attempt to neuter dog leads to charges

An amateur veterinarian’s failed attempt to neuter a friend’s schnauzer became a police matter when the owner took the dog in for emergency treatment.

Hung Doc Vu, 49, of Des Moines, was issued a misdemeanor citation Monday for improper care and treatment of animals. The charge carries a fine of up to $500.

Police said Vu attempted the sterilization procedure Aug. 2 on Shelly Shannon’s dog “Pooper.” It was reported to police two days later and animal control officers were brought in. They said one testicle had been removed with a razor blade during the home procedure but the other could not.

Shannon, 7907 S.W. 10th St., determined that the dog needed professional help, so she took him to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Iowa, 6110 Creston Ave., where Pooper was treated and later released.

Vu admitted that he attempted to neuter the dog and had not used pain medication, officials said. Officials said Vu told them he had been taught the procedure by his father and grandfather.

Officers noted that Vu has no veterinary license or training.

“His intentions may have been good but how he went about it wasn’t,” Sgt. Scott Raudabaugh said. “We had no indication that he was trying to be malicious.”

State Veterinarian David Schmitt said Iowa law allows home castration of livestock but not household pets. He said such reports are rare.

Regarding the subject of this thread, when I first read it, I reacted like many of you did (why couldn't he find a home for the dogs?!), but after some thinking, remember, the dogs were elderly, regardless of a considerable attempt there was little chance of finding them a home. They would have died within a month (3 days even, according to Purge above!) in a shelter, put to sleep. This was a very tough decision for corruptrelic and his grief is suffering enough. Let's not add to it.

At least we saw Arkon in game last night. He was there doing his thing while we played AB battles. Don't be shy, Arkon. You can join us in chat even if you're doing your own thang.

Thanks to Polly Morphous (Tareeq), Bacchus Tactilist (Miltonite) and Hemogobling Thief (Arcanis) for all the help doing AB battles and helping me get the first Luxon Supporter title. It wasn't easy; it was actually all pain--the Luxon faction just couldn't get their act together all night long and we lost every single game close to twenty-times in a row. But I got that title! Thanks again, guys.

I'll be on again tonight, doing whatever. Vanquishing? NightFall campaign? Helping people? Any of those.

You're in for a treat, as the series gets better with each season. Now, each season tells a somewhat self-contained story-arch, so when you get to Season 2, you'll get introduced to a whole set of new characters (Season 2 was centered around shady dealings on the docks and crooked teamsters). Season 3 got back to the city's drug dealing problem. Season 4 was centered around the problem of the failing inner city education system. I've yet to watch the final season. Waiting for it to hit DVD soon.

Their massive presentation was impressive. They had a long LED setup on the stadium floor that stretched to 500 ft. The calligraphy dancers, painting on the surface as they danced, were very inventive. But I think I was the most blown away by the printing-press blocks which were choreographed to emulate wind and water and at the end it turned out there was people in each one of those things.  eek

Now Im getting a kick out of the Chinese cheerlearder girls. They've been dancing well over an hour as the delegations fill the stadium. Oh, and Puerto Rico just entered the stadium. Yayyyy! (I'm watching on TiVo on a delay.)

Saving Private Ryan is absolute garbage. It's a formulaic movie complete with a ridiculous, manipulative ending. Thinking of the scene at the end, "Tell me I've lived a good life" makes me want to puke. I don't know why people like this movie so much, I guess they think well-crafted action scenes are more important than a decent script. Other war movies that I despise: Blackhawk Down and A Few Good Men.

Other "good" movies that I walked out of the theater include A.I. and Shakespeare in Love. Oh, Braveheart and Gladiator suck donkey balls too.

Shrek 1, Kung Fu Panda, Flushed Away and Over The Hedge were worth watching IMHO.

Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers were not, however.

Which reminds me, I didn't like Over The Hedge. One of the most unfocused, manic, unfunniest animated films of recent memory. I wouldn't say all of Dreamworks animation is bad, but that one I didn't like.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. You know, it's like a fantasy... but for the kids.. with ridiculous armies of humans, centaurs, lions, bears and every goddamn animal battling with not one drop of blood shown. Sorry that I didn't read the book as a kid. I found it to be third-rate fantasy at best.

I have a deep-rooted dislike for anything having to do with Firefly and the feature film Serenity. I think Joss Whedon is severely overrated.

Crash. It's such an astoundingly preachy movie. To this day, I don't understand why it got as many accolades as it got.

The Boondock Saints. I don't hate-hate this movie, but I think it's overrated. To me, it's a Tarantino knockoff that appeals to people with an Irish fetish. I don't know.. maybe I should watch it again.

Since I haven't played this since the original launch... is there more PvE content now?  Perhaps with the expansions there is enough PvE content that I won't have to worry about the PvP.

Between the original game and the Factions/NightFall/Eye Of The North expansions there's a crap-ton of PvE content to get thru in GW, Arkon. Many people have this erroneous notion that the game is mainly PvP and that's not the case. You can play this game for months without touching the PvP. Also, you can start the game with either the original or Nightfall or Factions for a decent price and buy the other expansions as you go along. Check it out at and see if you want to join us in-game,man.

And one of the most difficult to make. 'Fight Club' cost the head of Twentieth Century Fox its job at the time. There was a huge backlash against the movie, from from both critics and audiences. It took several years for them to come back and admit that the movie was genius.

Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed by the mods letting this go on and on.  Jackassery is something I thought GT was above. tear

Let what go on?  I don't really care to moderate what is considered funny.  If the community doesn't care for this stuff then presumably they will be vocal in that (and indeed some have been) and perhaps peer pressure will check it.

But nothing in these threads constitutes a breach of the CoC IMO and, as such, I don't see why these threads should have been locked.  Could they have been merged?  Perhaps but we don't do that every often either.

Personally, I don't think posting multiple threads as some sort of meta-joke is very funny and if it becomes constant then maybe we can decide on an official policy against it.  But, for now, these type of meta-jokes don't seem frequent enough to take such action.

I just think six threads on the same topic, four of which were done just to be funny, is too much.  What's the point of moderating a board if you're going to just allow people to spam away like that?

Also, this line from the CoC strikes me as possibly applicable:

The posting of inflammatory, rude, repetitive or offensive messages designed to annoy or antagonize other posters or disrupt the flow of discussion is not allowed here.

I'd argue that the multiple threads constitute repetitive messages designed to annoy.  You might even argue that some of them were offensive, given the issue that was originally being discussed.

People can joke around all they want, I just don't think we needed four additional threads started, as was the case in this situation.

IMHO, obviously.

I think a better question is why you're making a big whoop out of this. The threads have died out, it's a new week, and people have moved on. It's you who's keeping the threads alive with your posts. Why not simply ignore the posts if they didn't appeal to your sense of humor? This is what most of us do. Now you're calling for 'mod action' and god knows what.

I didn't want to say anything.. but, seriously, you're being petty.

We sure had some fun in Guild Wars last night. Zaxxon and Toxo joined our budding guild, then we embarked on a vanquish of The Sage Lands. This turned out to be an epic two hour undertaking, and we lost Toxo halfway as he got disconnected. But we all made a good bundle of cash (at least 6 platinum each),and got a bunch of XP and gold loot. as i noted in my initial post, i regard this crime as shocking and down right frightening.  i have nothing but the utmost sympathy for the victim's family and I'm apalled at the extent of evil displayed by the murderer.

however, gallows humor has existed since the moment humans traded fins for feet (or, if you're a creationist, were plopped into the garden).  it's in our dna to make light of things that scare us.  it helps us to deal.  yes, tasteless at times.  but it doesn't mean those making jokes about the situation are any less aware of the gravity of the situation.

in any case, as pointed out, this thread was purely an attempt to poke fun at the number of threads that popped into existence after the first one.

+1. This crime is so absurd, atrocious and over the top that I think it's only human nature to try and put some distance between our everyday world and the crime with some dark humor.  Of course, we feel terrible about the victim in this situation. This poor man hit the lottery for terrible things happening to people. Think of the odds of someone going psycho in a full bus and stabbing you to death and decapitating you.
