Enjoyable overall, but they could've shortened the action sequences without losing anything. Explosions in great numbers are wearisome.

Me to wife: "So what did you think?"

Wife: "It wasn't too bad. I can see why it went straight to video, though."

Me: "..."

Wife: "I mean, you can see why it wasn't released in theaters."

Me: "Uhhhh...that was one of this year's top-grossing movies." (#6, I looked it up)

Wife: "Really. How come I never even heard about it?"

Me (changing subject): "I liked how they wove the Avengers and SHIELD into it. That was Thor's hammer in the epilogue. I think he's going to be in the next one."

Wife: "I keep telling you -- you'd really like New Mexico."

Me: "WTF?"

Wife: "That was in New Mexico."

(/me retreats to my office.)
What was your wife smoking and can I have some?

Finished this up the other day and had a fun time with it.  I put pretty much all my points into Assault Rifle and Toughness and never had too much difficulty throughout.  The toughest things were probably not wanting to kill civilians when they were shooting at me and the boss
Spoiler for Hiden:
Brayko.  He was a little tough.  Marburg wasn't the easiest either, but not too bad.

I really liked the conversation system and the writing throughout.  Heck is hilarious.  I also liked the mission setup.  They were relatively short, so I would usually play a mission or two and quit to do other things.

The worst thiing was probably the AI.  It's pretty bad, but made things a little easier I think.  I'd rather have it err on that side rather than frustrating.
It could use a little more polish, but nothing major and I didn't run into any bugs.  I've been debating a second playthrough as a pissed-off, hand-to-hand stealther.

I didn't do much of anything else this weekend other than using the iPad.  It's really hard to put down.  The convenience of being able to take it anywhere, having all the functions at your fingertips and the increased size from the iPod Touch make it incredibly appealing.

I'm still undecided if it's better to read e-books on against the Kindle.  I haven't spent much time trying to read, but I generally don't like reading for long periods of time on a backlit screen.  It's definitely faster than my first gen Kindle and looks prettier.  The ability to actually see photos/maps is a nice plus.  I am glad there is a Kindle app.  I like the sepia tone, but it's missing the built in dictionary.

Surprisingly, I've spent hardly anytime playing games on it yet.  I'm sure that will change in the future.

Some apps I liked:
ABC player: Video looked really really good.  Also nice it bookmarks your place when watching a show.
Air Video/StreamtoMe: They do pretty much the same thing, but Air Video looked a little better.
MLB At Bat: A little pricey at $14.99, but great if you like baseball.  Video quality varied from poor to excellent, but usually looked pretty good.
Netflix: Awesome to have this app.
EW Must List:  Cool looking layout.
Guardian Eyewitness: Beautiful looking full screen photos.
The Early Edition:  Takes RSS feeds and puts them into a newspaper type layout.

What videos do you guys watch on Air Video?  I can't watch my itunes library because of DRM as far as a I can tell.  Are you guys ripping DVDs to your computers or am I missing something here.  It seems like a great technology, but I can't figure out much of a use for it so far.
I've got ripped .avi files that I play through AirVideo.  DRM'd video won't play AFAIK.

I'm loving it so far.  Tried 3G at work and it worked pretty good.  Definitely slower than wi-fi, but decent enough.  I could watch MLB game streams on 3G, but video quality wasn't very good.  The app itself is fantastic although video quality varies even on a wi-fi connection.

Air Video  Maybe THIS is the magic that Jobs and the english chap was talking about.     I dropped all my movies into a folder on my computer called 'Streaming' and then pointed that program to that folder.    It converts and streams on the fly.    It works amazingly well, and that includes two ripped Blue Ray discs I own and ripped.

Streaming over the internet with it is still experimental according to the program, but here is hoping it will work.    If it does... well then...   you have magic!
I love this app.  I've only used it on my iPod, but can't wait to try it on the iPad.  It saves so much time for me converting .avi to .mp4 using my own program.

1.04 Beta is out.  Lots of nice changes.

v1.0.4 Beta April 20, 2010

Public Beta Update
Please Note This update does create a new save folder, although it will work with previous saves. You need to navigate to the previous version save folder to open your older saves. We recommend starting a new game in order to get the full effect of the changes and improvements, as some will not apply to older save files.
Also, this update may reset the automation settings in your Options and adds new ship filtering options for the top zoom level in your Advanced Settings on the Options screen. Please open the Options screen again to adjust them to your preference. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Known Issues and Testing Requests:
The economic balance needs some additional tweaking and there may be one bug remaining in the new code that sets money/cash flow to a non-numerical value. Because of the degree of rebalancing required after the earlier economic fixes, we need more feedback here with different race and empire types and galaxy sizes to make sure things are looking better than in previous versions.
We are also very interested in getting more feedback on the new auto-engage and auto-refuel code for manual control ships and how it performs at various game speeds. There may be some minor issues remaining here which we will aim to fix before the official release of 1.0.4.

Bug Fixes:

1. Races with special tech now have requisite resources at startup to build ships using the special tech
2. Medical and Recreation center components now work at bases other than space ports
3. Fixed crash with defeated 'ghost' empires reappearing and 'ghost' ships visible in the mini-map
4. Fixed crash that sometimes occurred when viewing a Construction yard list sorted by some columns
5. Fixed various other minor crashes
6. Designs for Resupply ships, Colony ships and Construction ships now have size limits, even though built at colony. Size limit is current maximum base construction size. These civilian ship designs also have some minimum requirements for the number of certain component types that must be present.
7. Fixed issues with super-luxury resource distribution in small galaxies
8. Can no longer retrofit to designs that are bigger than your current construction tech allows
9. Fixed bug where freighters sometime stack up waiting to dock at a space port

Game Balance Changes

1. Racial bonuses apply in more gradual manner for multi-racial empires - will only get full bonuses if a race comprises at least half your empire's population
2. Balanced economy with tax resistance and corruption so that income does not vary wildly between large empires and small empires - as your empire grows, increased tax resistance and corruption consumes a lot of revenue, meaning that large empires should no longer have excessive income.
3. Rebalanced trade offers so that valuations for tech, bases and colonies much higher. Valuations now also scale quite dramatically based on how much the other empire likes or dislikes you
4. Research speed has been halved
5. Empires now much less likely to colonize in another empire's system
6. Your empire's reputation now has less impact on your colonies if the population at the colony is aggressive and unfriendly. In other words, citizens of war-like races aren't so concerned about you having a poor reputation.
7. Positive reputation impact from destroying pirate ships has been lowered, but positive reputation impact from destroying pirate bases has been increased.
8. Ending a war no longer completely resets attitudes, there may be some lingering animosity
9. Other empires much less likely to accept unfavourable trade offers
10. Private ships can now only be armed with a single weapon - this armament will not cause any offense when they enter other empire's systems

Fleet and Ship Management Improvements

1. Holding down the Ctrl key while right-clicking to assign a mission now overrides the default mission for the selected ship. This allows you to override the default right-click behaviour and gain access to a comprehensive pop-up menu to select the mission you want, e.g. military ships can refuel at a space port instead of patrolling it, troop transports can refuel at a colony instead of loading troops at it
2. Added filtering for ship and base icons at galaxy zoom level - can selectively enable/disable ship types displayed at galaxy level. By default civilian ships are turned off at Galaxy zoom level. Please see the Options screen, Advanced Display Options to change this to suit your exact preferences.
3. Manually controlled ships will now automatically refuel when low on fuel, and then return to their previous mission
4. Manually controlled ships will now automatically engage enemy targets without needing to be manually directed to each target. They will then return to their previous mission, e.g. patrol, escort, etc
5. Patrol missions now automatically reset, i.e. a manually-controlled ship will stay at a patrol target until you tell it to stop
6. Fleets should stay together better than previously
7. Fleets should not cancel their missions when advisors suggest other uses for them

Ship Design and Retrofitting Improvements

1. Added mass retrofit option in Ships and Bases screen. Multi-select ships from the list and click the retrofit button to select the design to retrofit to.
2. Added new design subroles: energy research station, weapons research station, industrial research station, high-tech research station, monitoring station, defensive base. These types of bases are no longer AI-designed if you turn off automation for ship design
3. Design screen now shows all latest designs (when Show Latest Designs selected), regardless of whether you can build them or not.
4. Added maximum weapons energy use to Design screen (top of Weapons panel) so that you can compare reactor power output to optimize military designs
5. Added energy collector to default military ship designs

Other Improvements:

1. Expansion Planner now always shows colonization and mining targets, even when they are considered unimportant
2. Slightly fewer surprise attack suggestions from advisors
3. Message added in research progress bar to indicate when you have completed all research in an area

yeah Gratch, the tutorials aren't very good and it took me some trial and error, especially on the smackdown attack.  It does get much easier with practice.

A quick and dirty summary:
Resonance points build when the active member moves between the other two.  The path line will become blue.  You need at least one Resonance point to perform a Tri-Attack, but more is better.  You lose RPs by making any other type of move.
Y button will initiate it (it makes an orange triangle showing the path of the characters) and each time you press Y it will reverse the direction the characters move.
X button will start it in motion. From there it's pretty much like regular combat but with all 3 char. attacking at once.

though the constant talk of the Ch 9 and 10 bosses has me concerned.

I took out the Chapter 9 boss last night. 19 minutes and 55 seconds (zero stars). On the plus side I beat him on the first try. On the minus side I could totally see losing that battle and being totally frustrated. Other than the second Eidolon that's the only boss that's had me concerned so far. I've had more trouble by far with fights against large groups of mobs than with boss fights.

It's been easy street so far, but I hear the best is yet to come.
I finished the Ch. 9 boss today without too much trouble, although the first time I got the Doom Counter and died.  I changed my strategy a little the 2nd time and he went down pretty easy.

I can finally change my battle party 26 hours in!  yay!

Is it worth it to add a class to a character - like making Light a Saboteur, for example?  I guess I can see it might be useful, but it seems awfully expensive.

Questions about fleets:

Is it difficult to coordinate multiple fleets so they attack a colony/sector at the same time?
Is there any kind of meta fleet setup?  I.e. Fleets made up of fleets?
I don't believe you can select multiple fleets at a time.  If there is, I haven't found a way to do it.  I've been grouping and hotkeying separate fleets.

Trying to control fleets. I get attacked by a pirate...but I cannot figure out an easy way to select a ship/fleet and send them to defend the place that is being attacked.

I've been leaving fleets on manual, since they have been a little picky on auto.  I've been making fleets by selecting the ships I want in the fleet and then hitting Ctrl-1, ctrl-2, etc. and then they are hotkeyed to 1,2, etc. and then send them to deal with whatever threat.

Quote from: MythicalMino on April 06, 2010, 09:45:37 PM

Ship Designs. I go to that screen, and it all looks like Greek to me. I know that it will just take some time to get used to it...but wow...lots to learn.
Ship design looks pretty complicated at first, but mess around with it and it becomes easier.  In the Design screen you can edit, add or upgrade a ship.  If you open up the specific design (or make a new design), all potential ship components show up on the left and current components in the design are in the middle.  Between the two boxes are arrows buttons to add/remove.  If you are missing a required component it will show in red in the top "warnings" box.

The expansion planner is where you can plan which viable colonies to send your colony ships to.  It has a great button marked 'build and send colony ship here' which is a huge help.  But that's not what I discovered tonight.  No, what I discovered tonight was that you can change the planner to show 'known resources by empire priority'.  That's right!  So in this example I needed a specific luxury...I switched the planner to sort based on empire priorities, and right there in the list was a world that has this particular item.  But it's not a colonisable world!  No problem!  The 'build a colony ship' button had been replaced by 'queue the nearest construction ship to build a mining station here'!
I've been using it like that too, and it seems to work nicely.  I'll usually sort by empire demand or a specific resource and send ships out to mine it.  Very convenient.

Nice to hear another patch should be out soon.  Automated fleet operation is a little finicky, but I've been enjoying manually controlling them so far.

yeah, other than the crashes, I'm really liking it a lot and it looks to be well supported.  I'm sure these early problems will get fixed and tweaks made to make it an even better experience.

One thing I really like is the customization to gameplay.  You can sit back and let the empire run itself, really dig in and micromanage if that's your thing or anywhere in between.  It's pretty cool it can run both ends of the spectrum and seems to work well thoughout.
It seems like the developers really listen and respond to feedback, so that goes a long way in my book.  It would be a shame to see a game like this fall short due to lack of support.
80  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Distant Worlds Preview Article - Part 1 on: March 28, 2010, 06:16:05 AM
One bug I noticed, or it seemed like one anyways :
I had a fleet of seven ships (on automation) sitting on a planet and one was attacked by a space monster.  The ship being attacked fought back, but the rest of the fleet didn't do anything.  I had to manually order them to attack.

oops, just had my first crash.  Luckily it wasn't too far from my save point.

...and a few questions...

I sent the fleet to a nearby system to refuel and afterward they stayed at that planet, but it's not their home colony.  Are they supposed to go back to their home colony when not on a mission?

Do all races start on a marshy swamp moon?  Just for kicks I started about 6-7 new games with different races and each time the start was a Marshy Swamp Moon, but I can't colonize marshy swamp moons (for certain races) if they are nearby.  I assume every race can colonize Continental planets?
If I can colonize Ice or Volcanic planets to start, should I have the Habitation Module tech for that environment?  I only have the Continental one in all cases.

edit:  hmm... I'm getting the CTD everytime it hits a certain date after loading my save.  I went and uploaded it to Matrix.  It sounds like they are working on a few of the bigger issues and hope to have some things patched in the next day or two.
