41  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: I am buying a new boardgame in the morning... on: May 27, 2011, 09:31:11 PM
So, I have read through the rule book for Twilight Imperium (3rd Edition).

I actually have TWO groups that are wanting to play this. Problem is, I don't even know how to play it!! Any suggestions on really how to learn the game, and then teach the game to a bunch of other ppl? Usually, I set up a game and play solo a few times, but not sure that will really work with this beast....
42  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: I am buying a new boardgame in the morning... on: May 26, 2011, 08:47:03 PM
heh, the Zombie Horde (promo card for Nightfall from BGG) card arrived in the mail today, also.

I am a happy guy right now.
43  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: I am buying a new boardgame in the morning... on: May 26, 2011, 05:50:58 PM
well...I ended up going with Twilight Imperium. I have wanted that game for years, and I have a somewhat regular group that gets together on most mondays with about 3-5 ppl mots of the time. They are all into the sci-fi theme (all of them are big fans of star wars, for example).

It came down to Shadows Over Camelot, TI3, and a game not on the list, Battlestar Galactica. I decided to go with TI3 and finally fulfill one of my years-long wish.
44  Gaming / Analog Gaming / I am buying a new boardgame in the morning... on: May 26, 2011, 06:00:33 AM
so, which should I get???

There are several I am really looking at picking up, but, there can only be....ONE...

Last Night On Earth
Yggdrasil
Shadows over Camelot
Thunderstone: Dragonspire
Ghost Stories
Cosmic Encounter
Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition (I have wanted this game since forever, and I think I can finally get it)

The question, though....if it is Twilight Imperium, how good is the game w/o any expansions?

So any thoughts on which I should get, and why?
45  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Nightfall on: May 20, 2011, 03:29:43 PM
Here is the quote about a character attacking itself....

"Frankly, IMO, that's a little much. It's actually more confusing in the long term, as people have to remember 7 times X cards and what they do (by name) as opposed to simply X. If I said "I'm playing Bob Jones, Kitty Buncoface, and Jimmy Junkweather, you're turn"

How many people are going to instantly remember what they do without asking? Heck half the time you might even have the other "named" version of Bob Jones in your hand and not be able to keep it straight.

If you say "I'm playing Alton Hickman" assuming we've played the game a time or two we all know he's the unblockable guy.

This goes very far back into AEG's past, and its something we stand by. Back when L5R was first going to press all those 15 years ago, we had playtest cards like "Young Lion Samurai" and "Arrogant Crane Samurai". In the end it was decided that naming "Young Lion Samurai" "Matsu Gohei" added a lot more flavor to the game. Yes, you might end up with more than one Matsu Gohei on the table, heck you might end up with two against each other, but ultimately it was still better. Matsu Gohei is a person, with his own life and background, goals and story. You can get to know Matsu Gohei. You can't get to know "Young Lion Samurai".

And again, naming all the copies of him a different name with the same art would have been just as off. Ordering 7 different pieces of art for every card in Nightfall would have sunk the budget to the point the game wouldn't have ever been printed."

Here is the link to the thread (it is actually a video review with comments): http://www.boardgamegeek.com/video/5581/nightfall/avraw-64-nightfall-i-finally-found-a-deck-build

And I tend to agree about the "story". But I also read (in that same thread, maybe?) that in the expansion, the story will be tightened up, especially with the humans vs. vampires deal.
46  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Nightfall on: May 20, 2011, 03:14:24 PM
After a few days of reading reviews/sessions/ect. and watching review videos, I decided to buy this. Got it this morning.

I want to point out something, though. I have read over on BGG from one of the designers (I believe he was one of the designers), that the deal with the different factions "fighting together" actually symbolically goes along with the fact that you (the player) is taking on the role of a "master manipulator" type persona, and are "controlling" the different characters in the different factions. So where the Lycans and the Vamps and the Humans may not realize it, they are all part and parcel to your (you, as the Master Manipulator in-game persona) plans to take over the world.

As far as the same characters battling each other goes....I have not been able to find anything from the designers about that.

A game I am interested in, but not ready to take the plunge and buy it: Cosmic Encounter.

I keep reading all this good stuff about it, ppl say it is one of the greatest games ever made, but when I look at it, it just doesn't interest me. Granted, I have not played it.

For those that have played it (the FFG version, since that would be the one I would buy), did you like it? What is so good about it?

Thanks

Chris
48  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Getting Back Into Board Games on: May 18, 2011, 02:13:15 PM
I have A Touch of Evil, from the same guys that made Last Night on Earth. And even though I do like A Touch of Evil, I don't feel it is a "great" game, so I am actually pretty hesitant to purchase Last Night on Earth. I have heard, though, that LNoE is much, much better than AToE. So, who knows....

Small World is pretty good. I actually liked The Adventurers, for some reason. I think it reminds me of one of my great games from the past, Fireball Island, and I have great memories of that one (wish I could get that one, but on ebay only, they are very expensive for even incomplete games).

I have been wanting to pull out Descent, but that is a tough game for the kids to really get into. And my "adult" gaming group has shown zero interest in it. In fact, the only game that they have been wanting to play is Defenders of the Realm. That doesn't bother me, since that game is awesome, in my opinion.

But I have so many others that I would love to play, like Chaos in the Old World. Have yet to really play that in an actual setting. I also got Marvel Heroes (should have had an expansion done for it!!). Then there is Talisman, StarCraft, and a bunch of others!! Like I said, though, I have so many games, and nobody to really play them with....

heh, on a side note, I just pulled out Arkham Horror, and was going to try to set that up. Nope...no way. Just too much there. Expansion overkill to the extreme. Trying to separate the base game stuff from the expansions, and it burned me out on the game just doing that!! I should put that game up on ebay, see if I can make some money off of it.
49  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Getting Back Into Board Games on: May 18, 2011, 12:07:33 PM
My current favorite is Defenders of the Realm. But have been playing quite a bit of A Touch of Evil. Just picked up The Adventurers yesterday, and the kids and I played 4 games. That seems to be a BIG hit. Also, played a game of Small World the other day.

I am really wanting Thunderstone: Dragonspire and Last Night On Earth. I have Dominion, and Thunderstone looks really cool.

How is Last Night On Earth?
50  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Brink on: May 09, 2011, 10:50:20 PM
I have only used D2D twice, and this being the 2nd time. But, I pre-ordered, got the discount (25% off), and then was able to pre-load on steam with no issues.

So, I am all set and ready to play at midnight tonight.

It looks kinda cool....anyone know much about it?

hmm....I uninstalled the beta, then downloaded/installed...it seemed to be fine. Now not so sure.

in that quest line, Joker explains why he is sending you after Bane. Well, the Joker explains, along with that Calculator guy.
54  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: DC Universe-NDA lifted. Beta Impressions on: January 31, 2011, 08:44:11 AM
so, how exactly do I get influence for a particular faction? On the hero side (and on Cry for Blood), I have seen a helmet I really want for my costume, but I need to be "friendly" with the Sentinels of Magic. Ok...I can understand that...but how do I get influence? I have influence as a currency, but it is simply marked as, "influence".

So, how do I gain influence with specific groups or factions?

Oh, and I hate going to the Watchtower....
55  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: DC Universe-NDA lifted. Beta Impressions on: January 24, 2011, 06:45:42 AM
I realize that. But what I am wondering, though, is....where do I pick more missions up? I really don't want to leave Gotham City. So, do I need to visit the other safehouses, maybe?
56  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: DC Universe-NDA lifted. Beta Impressions on: January 24, 2011, 06:31:59 AM
ok...I am lvl 14....in Gotham (Joker is my mentor). I have....ONE mission that takes place in Gotham. But, I also have like...15 missions in Metropolis (???)

So, why am I not finding any missions for Gotham? Why is Joker trying to send me to Metropolis? I would finish the one mission I have in Gotham, but, the Heroes are all crazy there, and personally, I am getting tired by being DESTROYED by Heroes who are 5-8 lvls higher than I am (the repair bills are getting a bit crazy).

So, am I just not finding the missions to do in Gotham? Or am I destined to just give up and go to Metropolis? Also, I have some missions that I have way out leveled....by 10 levels for some of them. How do I abandon missions? Is that possible?

By the way, the mission I am on in Gotham has me taking out detectives for the Joker in Amusement Mile. I did just finish a couple for Two-Face, but those were quick and all right there in Amusement Mile. Are there other places to find missions for my lvl range?
57  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: DC Universe-NDA lifted. Beta Impressions on: January 21, 2011, 11:39:27 AM
been playing the Legends Arena scenarios....and have yet to win even one match. Keeps on putting me in the Arkham one (I am a villain), and we just lose so badly. Even when we capture a point, our points continue to plummet. Not sure what we (I) am doing wrong.

But, I saw a lvl 26 in the scenario with a bunch of lvl 10's...didn't really think that was possible....
58  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: DC Universe-NDA lifted. Beta Impressions on: January 18, 2011, 05:59:21 PM
bought, installed, updated...and then....the servers are down.

I cannot find any info as to how long, as the forums are down, also.

Anyone know for how long?

61  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 17, 2011, 03:38:58 AM
well...they did add something a little different to "death"...I forget exactly what it is called (soul walk or something like that). It has an hour cooldown, but you can "rez" nearly immediately. Unless that is something only for the beta?

64  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 dead? on: January 09, 2011, 07:35:04 PM
Ok...so....

I was just, literally, JUST looking through movies on netflix. I turned off the PS3 like normal....

I go back about 45 minutes later, turn it on, and the power light goes green, then briefly yellow, then flashing red.

Anyone else ever have this issue?

From what I can read online about it, I am simply out of luck....

65  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 09, 2011, 12:50:28 AM
so what is the progression of the Rifts? When does a rear become a rift, and a rift become an invasion or foothold or whatever?

I see on the map different invasions and footholds...what is more dangerous? What is, if there are any, the priorities in taking care of these things?

Hopefully, those questions made sense....
66  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 07, 2011, 08:44:29 AM
so....what server is everyone on? Or does that really matter?
67  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Rift is in beta on: January 06, 2011, 11:21:02 PM
I went to the local Gamestop. I asked about Rift...the guy looked at me kinda...doumbfounded. He asked me what it was...I told him again, "Rift...it is an MMO that is coming out next month. Supposedly, you guys have beta keys if I pre-order."

His reply? "Oh...uh....ok....let me look and see...."

He looks it up on his computer screen...and says there is nothing by that name. But, he does say some pokimon game is there. I say, "It is called Rift...maybe Rifts....but you should have it available for preorder."

His reply? "Oh...uh...ok...well....there is nothing by that name...so...yeah...uh...."

I roll my eyes, and say, "Ok, thanks."

so, I bought it through Trion's site....

I took another break, and just came back...but I don't have any high lvl characters....

haha....sorry!!

The game is good...pretty fun. My wife and I played a game one night (sorry CeeKay, no random nudity that night). It is interesting...I had read a few months ago that there was going to be an expansion, but haven't followed through with checking.

I thought Serpent's Lantern was the first Adventure Pack? They have a second one coming around the end of September called The Demonflame.

Aren't they supposed to be "free"?
77  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: and Aion is getting larger..... on: July 21, 2010, 08:07:54 AM
my Aion account has been banned. I guess someone hacked my account or something. I don't know. The customer service guy said it happened back in December. I never got an email or anything about it. Just know that I cannot do anything with Aion until they decide what they are going to do with my account.

I talked to the guy today (Tuesday), so how long should I wait to call them again? I was thinking about Friday. But would that be too soon for their "investigation"?

I am really enjoying this....I am now lvl 19 Robotics. I suck at the PvP, but it is still enjoyable.

I am wanting to get into an Agency that is really good and is into the AvA. Right now, I am in one called BlackBlades, but...it just seems to be lacking.

My brother in law also has the game. My name in-game is Mynnotaur. So, if anyone is playing, add me!!

I am downloading the trial right now. I am looking for an MMO that I can jump back and forth (Age of Conan is my other MMO). I want something different from the typical MMO, though.

Is this game decent? It is only 26 bucks right now via steam....

I am one 5 minute car drive from getting this (my oldest son LOVES transformers...). But, not sure it will run on my pc very good. I see that the requirements are 1.8 duel core processor. Mine is a 1.6. Will that matter much?
