Yeah. Been meaning to try out the media server stuff but I need to convert my USB HDD to a supported format since NTFS isn't mountable... The previous build I used (Toastman) didn't have media server.

Caine, you give that FW a try?
87  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Asus router warning. on: February 21, 2014, 11:32:51 AM
This would be the firmware you want then. I had tried a few other variants but the others had a niggling problem where after 4-5 days up the wireless would get really slow (rebooting the router in the evening while the son and I were playing WoW was getting annoying due to daughter griping...). The second link below is the simulator so you can see what it looks like and feature set.

You should try a tomato build on your router, so much better than the Asus firmware....

The settings that msduncan is using sound great to me.

What settings? Control settings? I'm wondering if this has controller support on the PC. Downloaded it and went thru the training missions last night and I'm thinking I'd rather play with a controller. And no I don't have a xbone yet so that isn't an option.

I'm pretty sure he was looking at the wrong post as msduncan is on XB1.  The game supports controllers on PC, and it doesn't seem very system intensive.

Cool I'll have to order one and give it a try. Already have the wireless transceiver.

Both the current gen AMD / nVidia cards are good. AMD's Mantle API shows promise.

For the vid card might wanna check this one out: PNY GeForce GTX 780 OC XLR8 and the review of it here: http://realhardwarereviews.com/pny-gtx-780-xlr8-oc/

It runs as fast as the TI's but is priced much better.

108  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 07:37:50 PM
Pretty much, but I would go into bios first and check boot priority. Also don't fidget with any overclocking until you have a stable system at stock settings and I would run a round of prime 95 at stock settings as you can get a bad component that can cause random crashes etc.
109  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 05:50:33 PM
Well if optical is before HD in the bios and the HD is bootable you should get a prompt to hit a key to boot from optical if a bootable CD/DVD is in the drive, if you dont press said key in a few secs it will generally just boot from the next avail device in the list.

Depends on if there is already an OS on the HD you are using and what the boot order is set to in the BIOS.

113  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Intel i5 vs i7 on: January 25, 2014, 11:04:39 AM
The main diff between the i5 and i7 is the i7 has hyper threading which will make it appear to windows as if it has 8 cores, it really only has four (unless you are talking about the extreme edition which has 6). Unless you just have the extra money to throw at it I'd go with the i5.

I'd go with the K version of the cpu, they are unlocked and easily overclock quite a bit on air cooling. My i5 2500k (3.3ghz) runs stable at 4.2ghz with just air cooling.

Do you just overclock in the bios? I've never tried to OC anything before.

Yep in the BIOS on my Gigabyte board all I had to do was change the multiplier to 42 and then slightly up the CPU vCore voltage a bit at a time until I got a stable Prime95 run. I didn't have to up it much and it seems to vary on what you need from CPU to CPU but I am well within the safety margins and it'll have been running OC'd in May for two years.
