They need more quests, especially stuff you can solo or 5 man, and especially from level 40 on up to post 60.  Beyond that though...I dont see a need for 'casual' content.  Old content becomes casual content as the playerbase gets better.  And if there really is a 'casual' player out there who maybe plays 2-3 hours a week, well that guy is never gonna run out of stuff to do anyway.

They need more post 60 content, badly.

Can a X-box be used with a PC monitor?

As ^^ said x2vga.com all the way. I had one until I got a HDTV and it worked great. Picture quality was great on a CRT, but not so great on my Dell 2005FPW due to the stretching for 480p games. One caveat though, it does not support games that only run in 480i. DarkWatch comes to mind.

377  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can a complete newb build his own rig? *Final Update* on: November 09, 2005, 11:38:23 PM
Quote from: "unbreakable"
Best deal for a first-time builder is a Shuttle XPC.  About the only thing you need to do is insert the RAM and CPU (and maybe the video card, depending on which XPC you go with).

The main important thing about the CPU- get some contact paste (Arctic Silver is a good choice), and apply it according to the directions.  Having air between the CPU and heat sink will act as an insulator, defeating the whole reason you have a heat sink (meaning, the air will prevent the heat sink from cooling the processor).

Other than that, yeah, its all LEGOs.

One note to add to that is if you use an OEM HSF, be sure to remove the stock thermal pad before applying the Arctic Silver.

Also, touch your hands to the power supply before touching any components. This will help to discharge any static you already have.

Some of this is anal and overkill, but like you said it's a $200+ CPU.

Just make sure that its still plugged in or it wont make any difference, else discharge yourself on something thats stillplugged in.

I gotchya there.  But in order to use the DDR don't you have to have two matched sticks? Or is that something else I'm thinking of.  (note:  I'm a CprE, I understand the terms but haven't kept up with the changes and where we are at tech-wise.)  I guess I expected something more out of the MBs these days.  It seems like we've been at PC3200 forever for standard stuff.  And I needed a refresher.  Thanks for the tips!

Yes its best to use a matched pair and like ^^^ he said most mobo manufacturers have a list of recommended memory that can be found on thier sites. That said the memory I use PQI Turbo PC4000 was not on the list for my last mobo (ABIT AI7) or my current one (DFI Infinity NF4) and it works like a charm.

I just put my newish system together last night and when I was doing research on what parts to get, I noticed that all the new Intel mobos were using DDR2, but all the A64 ones I looked at were still using DDR.
384  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / What do you think of this setup? on: November 04, 2005, 02:02:00 AM
Couple -o- terms first.

DDR = Double Data Rate
FSB = Front Side Bus

So if your running 200Mhz FSB which is default for most moden CPU's you need DDR 400 memory. If your going to overclock by increasing the speed of the front side bus as high as 250Mhz you'd need atleast DDR 500 memory.

A good place to check out would be the memory forum here http://www.ocforums.com/

385  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / What Should I Upgrade? on: November 03, 2005, 12:43:17 PM
Quote from: "Harpua3"
I have a BFG card. I`d personally go that route. It has a LIFETIME warranty, and when I called them for something simple...get this, they seemed to actually know what they are doing. One more fact. BFG is the Nvidia card Falcon Northwest uses. I`m assuming they do that because of the reasons listed above and because they must have less issues with them over other cards. Who know. I have one though and love it!

The eVGA card I ordered has a lifetime warranty as well and thier support is great as I've had one of thier 6800GT's for over a year now.
I also believe the eVGA 7800 GT CO is clocked at 470Mhz/1100Mhz which is higher than the BFG.

Good call... Just make sure you have a good 450W+ power supply. I'm doing the same since some of the newer games dont run too well @1680x1050 even on my 6800GT. The following is on its way:

A64 3700+ (San Diego)
DFI NF4 Infinity mobo
eVGA 7800GT CO (free copy of CoD2 if purchared befo 11/7)

I'll also be bumping the ram to 2GB after xmas.

What about the memory type? 3200 seems pretty standard these days.  But I've seen 3500 and other types, whats the best and fastest?

If your not going to overclock PC3200 is all you'll need. The speed of the bus (200Mhz) defines how fast the memory runs and you'll gain nothing by running PC4000 memory, you might actually loose performance if the PC4000 cant run memory timings as tight as the PC3200 can.

391  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / What do you think of this setup? on: November 02, 2005, 02:17:10 AM
Just ordered an upgrade for my pc today from newegg...

A64 3700+ (San Diego) (Gonna OC it to > 4000+)
DFI Infinity NF4 Mobo
eVGA 7800GT CO (its the one running 470Mhz core, supposed to be within 1-3 fps of the GTX) plus a free copy of CoD2

Will be reusing the following

1GB (2x512) PQI DDR 500 Memory
2 x 120GB Maxtor SATA Drives
500W Ultra X-Connect Power Supply

I agree with what Ron said about memory though. 1GB minimum should be the standard for a gaming PC these days. I'll be either adding two more 512 sticks after xmas or getting a 2x1GB kit to bump it up to 2GB.

I've had two friends this week alone find out the had way that 255 & 512MB arent enough. My bro got WoW last week and over the weekend he got to Ogrimmar and he was freezing up for 30sec at a time (256MB).... I'd helped a riend upgrade his pc earlier this year and he didn't want to spend anymo $$ than for 512MB, called me today cryin the blues because CIV 4 was running like a dog... DUR... When I had him check > 700MB was being used.....

Why would Halo2 stretch to fit the widescreen? It works fine on widescreen tvs.

Because it is only a 480p game I think, so 640x480 or something, trying to fill 1680x1050...  Anyway, showing it on a higher res monitor probably exagerrated every jaggy, and other issues, as opposed to normal TVs.

Oh of course Scott, I forgot about that. Could you explain to me how the..."high def" games work? What resolution are they at? Will they look better on the LCD? I dont really mind continuing to play on my shitty tv, but I wouldn't mind using the LCD either smile

TOMORROW!

720p games run in 1280x720 and I believe 1080i runs at 1900x1080. And I'm no sure if the 2005 supports those resolutions. The X2VGA website even warns about alot of LCD monitors not supporting those resolutions. All I can say is give it a try.

Yes when stretched it was very jaggy and blocky...

Because Halo2 and most games on the XBOX for that matter run in 480i or 480p which is 640x480 and with an LCD you can either let it (the lcd) stretch the image to fit the screen or play it in a native 640x480 "window". Halo 2 looked much better on my 19" CRT using the x2vga than the 2005 & it also looks better on my new 26" Toshiba HDTV.
