Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion no longer a launch day title (XBox 360)

My buddy at EB informs I'll toss that out right now. I used to run an EB, they had little idea what was going on. Its best guess with them. That said, I'll confirm with my contacts (if I can) and report back. Hehe... Hopefully it isn't the same contact that told you two sku's for the 360 was BS

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Darkwatch is out this week? What's the vibe?

Yep found that out yesterday grrr.. However I also found out that those with a modded xbxox can hex edit the xbe file and change one byte from 20 -> 40 and viola 480p is enabled. I ended up getting a 26" Toshiba HDTV today and darkwatch doesn't look to shabby at all on it even though its only 480p. It even looks good when I have the tv set to fill the screen (tv is widescreen) even though the doesn't support it. Now I'm ready for 360 HiDef gaming

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 Pre-Release Thread

Game companies are sick of losing money on their consoles. I can't understand how any one can knock Microsoft for the $399 price. They aren't short changing anyone, they are just trying to give people more options by offering the $299 version.
If Sony releases the PS3 for less than $400 I will be shocked. Not only that, but just think about how much money they can potentially lose if they price the PS3 at $400. There is the system, the built in wireless adapter, the Hi-Def dvd, and I have heard that they are also considering an optional hard drive. I wouldn't be mad at Sony if the PS3 started at $600 dollars with all the crap they are putting in it.
Then there is Nintendo, and I wouldn't be suprised at all if the Revolution was only (ha only) $200. Yet they have catches too, charging to download all the games for one, and the other is that for that price, their machine just won't be able to do what the other two can. I know that it is all about the "game play", but if they don't improve the tech, they can't improve the gameplay.
People might not understand or like what Microsoft has done, but they have just opened gamers eyes to the $400 console price tag. It's kind of funny, because they totally took the burden off of Sony. You are smoking something, right? Weed? Crack? Something like that? I thought so. I could BUILD a damned fully functional powerful computer for $600... but you'd be willing to purchase a console with tons of restrictions and proprietary CRAP for $600? No thanks. You and about 10 other guys will have to enjoy that console yourselves. What! You couldn't build anything close to the 360 for $600. Hell a highend vid card these days goes for $500 alone.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 720p = What resolution?

Thanks. Looks like mine doesn't support 720p... I thought it might have been because I didn't have widescreen enabled in the dash, but that didn't help either. Looks like I might pick up a Toshiba (26HF85) 26" HDTV tomorrow since I'll be needing one for the 360 anyway.

If anyone thats getting this for XBOX and has a HDTV or an X2VGA could confirm that it supports 480p would be much appriciated. I've got my copy but wont be opening it until someone can confirm/deny that it works in 480p as 480i dont work at all on my X2VGA. If you look at the features on Microsofts site it 480p is checked as a feature, but on the back of the actual box it is not checked....

Here's a list of the accessories: • Hard Drive (20 GB) ($99.99, 99.99 Euros, 69.99 GBP)
Biggest rip-off ever? I will be waiting to see how the system is cracked to take a larger HD. If they hackers work fast you can have a $299 system and put in a 120 GB drive for only $60 more instead of $100 for a 20GB one! Not quite.. By looking at the size of the thing I highly doubt its gonna use a standard desktop pc drive, more likely a laptop type of drive and 120GB laptop drives are running ~$250 and 60GB drives go from ~90 - 150 depending on rpm.

The reason I ask is I put the new OXM Hulk demo in my xbox the other night which is connected to my 19" KDS xf9e monitir using an X2VGA and the screen went all wonky since my monitor apparently didn't support whatever rez 720p is. I'd like to get a monitor that supports 720p to connect a 360 to provided neoya or some other company comes out with a VGA adapter for it..

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Lower end vid card advice....

on: July 20, 2005, 05:36:22 PM

I just did the same thing for my son's computer and upgraded from a GeForce3 Ti200 (or some such) to a nVidia 9600XT. Here's the link:
Since when did nVidia start making 9600XT's  I went ahead and ordered a 256MB eVGA FX5500 for $59 bux. Cant beat the price for a budger gaming card. The kids wont be playing any DOOM3 or the likes on it since the oldest is only 10, I wanted an upgrade mainly so we could play some Act of War multi. without his pc bogging down.

Hey guys,
I'm looking to replace the vid card in my kids pc (GF4 MX) and am not looking to spend alot of $$ ie. < $100. I was browsing newegg and found several GeForce FX5500 256mb cards for ~$70, how would this card compare to a GF4 mx? Any other suggestions?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / August OXM BF2 Demo!
|
on: June 30, 2005, 08:50:17 PM
|
It says BattleField 2: Modern Combat on the mag I'm pretty sure, but anyhow I use a KB&M on my xbox with the SmartJoy Frag. you too? heh The only downside is sometimes vehicular controls are messed up. For instance in Halo2, driving is HARD using keyboard and mouse based on the systems expectation. here's a visual. analog X axis L------------------------[deadzone]----------------------R when driving if you are going to turn right around, you hold hard L or R on analog and they have an equivilant to mouse-accelleration where you speed up once it's been held for a certain amount of time. (less than a second). With a mouse, you would just whip it left or right, taking miliseconds. To turn with around while in a vehicle you need to drag the mouse at a decent speed for much longer to get the same turning effect. Since BF2 plays much like Halo2, I expect the same problems with controls. I used to have problems driving in Halo2, but I now have a seperate SmartJoy profile for driving. In the driving profile I have the deadzone cranked up to ~80 and it makes it much easier to drive. So when I jump in a vehicle I hit <F2> and when I exit the vehicle I hit <F1>, simple as that. -Tony -Tony

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Dell LCD Monitor Questions

You guys see they have a new 24" widescreen LCD? Little over $1000 though. Yeah, I saw that but for $1000, forget it. I'm happy with my $397 20" screen. It's plenty big enough for me and a big step up over my 19" CRT. I am still amazed how damn good everything looks now. It's made everyone of my games feel almost new, due to the improved color and clarity. It's really awesome. Ditto...

I don't have firsthand experience with this but I've read that many games disable transferring saves in the dashboard even when the saves would technically be small enough to fit on the memory card. Ninja Gaiden is one. Had to start all over when I got a new xbox since I couldn't copy the save to a mem card.

wOOt! Got my 2005 FPW yesterday and it looks awesome especially since there are no dead/stuck pixels and no backlight bleeding that bother me. The bad news is that playing Halo2 through the x2vga looks better on my CRT than the new LCD which is probably due to the LCD stretching the 480p output to fit the screen. I ended up putting the 2005 on my Mac Mini and it looks great on it. I have gobs of desktop space to use iMovie & iDVD!

Yes it does! I dont have any games that use 720p or 1080i, but halo 2 in 480p looks awesome on my 19" CRT, much better than the TV plus I use a SmartJoy FRAG KB&M adapter for the xbox and it works out well having everything at a desk...

Check out this site for overclocking, especially the forums: http://www.overclockers.comIf your mobo came in a pc like a Dell, you wont be able to overclock it as Intel branded mobo's dont give you the options to do it. That said I've been running my P4 3.0c at 3.5ghz stable for about a year now us a ABit AI7 mobo. -Tony
