I'd be curious to hear if authors get anything from books they discount to $0 on Amazon?  Or is it purely trying to get people into a series and convert them into fans to buy more?  (which is also a great plan, just curious)

Purely the latter. Last time we talked he'd had almost 6000 takers on the first book. A small number of sales so far that will just cover the cost he put into advertising them, but hey... gotta start somewhere.  icon_wink

When not spending his days as an Oracle DBA, he is spending his other waking hours working on his books. We've talked over the years about the process, his inspirations, trials and tribulations as well as the different genres he is writing for. Well, the leading edge of his book series (yes, plural) has been released and I'm really enjoying them. Thought some here might as well if you are into military sci-fi with a bit of cyberpunk and transhumanism mixed in, set in what seems to me to be a disturbingly possible and not all that far off dystopian future. I went straight through the first two and am about halfway into the third. I know there's more coming as well as an urban fantasy set or two at the very least. These have been a labor of love for him for quite some time.

Specifically, the first series is the "Rimes Trilogy" and his Amazon author's page is here. The first one is free and he just put together a "boxed set" for those who enjoy the first and want to pick up the next two for a lower price. Pretty sure all other formats are out there as well, i.e. for the Nook or iBook fans.

Thanks for checking them out!   thumbsup

Rise, Lady Raider of Tombs, Rise. Dawned on me my 53% completion percentage didn't mean halfway done with the story, but how much of all the goodies out there I've collected. Forgot how long you can run around in areas after the main story ends cleaning up all of the 'Mission Challenges' and such. This looks to be be the first game I actually complete this year, something pretty unusual for me. Funny too because the first reboot was one of the only other ones on that short list.
85  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rise of Tomb Raider on: November 19, 2016, 02:04:26 PM
I'm back in it as well on the PS4 after giving my initial go at it on the PC. Not quite as speedy as Gratch but a little over 50% complete as of last night and going strong. Finally got the dang rebreather (still waiting on 'broadhead climbing arrows' it would seem), have the Atlas and had some fun with the Deathless Ones and am now puzzling out one of the challenge tombs that stumped me very late last night. Can't wait to get back to it.  thumbsup

Still playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on the PS4 and am finally back to the 43% completion point where I eventually quit on the PC, trying to sneak back through the occupied village in the Geothermal Valley.  ninja

Oh, and perhaps some Tyranny.

Well pcgamer sure didn't like it.  I may have time to return it but am hoping they are just being unfairly critical.

There was a lot of negative press about Watch Dogs and Homefront Revolution, both of which I really liked. I'm really beginning to feel that gaming "journalists" shouldn't be reviewers if they can't make a better effort to keep their own subjective interpretation of what the game should have been like from what it actually is.

A long, long, long time ago (the seventies) there used to be a board game review publication (actually a sheet printed both sides, sometimes a bit bigger) called Richard Berg's Review of Games. Richard would occasionally include an article for potential reviewers on how to review a game. He stressed that their review shouldn't be about how the reviewer thought the game should have been designed, instead they should review the game as to whether the released game seemed to meet the goals the designer was seeking to accomplish.

I pretty much now rely on this forum and the one over at Octopus Overlords for a more informed, intelligent set of impressions of a game.

Right there with you, JZ... dang, it's been a long-ass time since my days with Richard and his Review of Games. Never mind the crap-ton of games he designed.  thumbsup

Does anyone have a recommendation on a wheel that works with this on an XB1? Not even sure if any wheel that works on the console will work with this game but assuming that's true. And any info I find online seems to be specific to Forza 6. Hoping someone here is... experienced.  icon_biggrin

I gave up on wheels because it seems none of them have the same type of forcefeedback as the previous gen that I was used to

Thanks guys. I did end up getting a Logitech G920 (on sale so 'only' $300) but will be returning it today. The cables are a bit short and I don't have a great place for it but did get it all hooked up and drove for a bit. However, in spite of being a very nice wheel, it wasn't enough of an improvement for me to justify the setup hassle and price tag. Went back to the controller and after futzing with the deadzone settings, it worked well enough to keep me racing until 2 something in the AM.  icon_smile

TiLT, this one worked just fine with the menus and such as it has a full set of buttons and a d-pad on it and the map 'snaps' to key points using the d-pad. You also get bonus points for every Forza game you've ever played and your 'Drivatar' is out there for the world to hunt down, it would seem. Bit of a PITA but did eventually beat you and your damn Ferrari in my Lamborghini Centenario and you were the first 'pro' I signed to my fledgling festival.  icon_cool

Not really sure about it being 'half baked', the only issue I've been seeing on the console version is the load times. They're not as bad when there's something on the screen but the initial ones are a big black screen with a small spinner at the bottom. I think as long as you've seen the gameplay and know what you are getting into, it's fine. Even if it does call everything a 'dungeon'. Hey, we need to head that-a-way to reboot Pylon 512. Ding, you've discovered a new dungeon! icon_wink

Nowhere near the end game so no clue what is missing / cut.

Finally played the demo this weekend. Wow. I can't wait. The only question now is which version and which format. ultimate to play early and get all the things? Digital to be playable on the PC as well? I'm having a hard time spending $100 and having no trade-in option vs $48 on amazon and being able to trade in for $20 when I am done with it.

Either way I will definitely be playing.

Well if you are getting it from Amazon anyway, you can get the Ultimate Edition in disc form for only $80.

Did you mean the 'Deluxe' edition? That's the one that shows up as $80, the Ultimate edition is $100.

I think he meant with Prime.  It's $80 for the physical Ultimate Edition with Prime.

Okay, thanks. I was looking for mention of the Prime discount but didn't see it last night, even put it in my cart without it showing up. You have to actually start the checkout process for it to show the $20 coming off. So, save $20 and not have the option of PC play or go the full $100 for the digital version?  Hmmmm....

Just as an FYI. Delayed one week, all others on sale.

Quote
We're hugely sorry to announce this, but Sorcery! 4's launch date has had to change. The epic finale to the series will now be going live on Steam, iOS and Android on September 22nd - one week later than originally planned.

After such a long journey - four games over four years, and nearly one and a half million words of content - we want to be sure the release is as good as it can be.

Once again, we hope you'll forgive us the delay. To help soften the blow, we've put the first three Sorcery! games on sale on the App Store for their cheapest price ever - just $1 each. So if you're missing any installments, now's the time to pick them up.

Wait, I thought you could only do the Play Anywhere thing with digital titles?

I own the digital version, yes.

Oh, when you said it "showed up today" I assumed you meant the disc showed up in the mail.

Sorry, just meant it was released. And somewhat that when I cranked up the XB1 it said it was ready for me to play. However that turned out to be not the case. Any tile that said "Play" on it would launch the title screen, sit for a moment and then open up the store page. Which said you own it, so "Play". Lather, rinse, repeat. Finally had to check where updates live and manually launch the 'update' that actually download the full game. Fun. Then wait while it loaded for reals... and wait... black screen, spinning thing... wait... icon_confused

Whatever pre-order stub it downloaded seemed to confuse the crap out of it. But we good now.

Figured I might as well start an official topic for this since it showed up today and I wanted to move the discussion out of the 'what are you buying' thread. I pre-ordered this on the Xbox 1 and the first thing I noticed were the dang wait times for loads. Other than that not seeing any issues so far but it is early on. Downloading it now on my Windows 10 machine, since I can 'Play Anywhere' maybe I'll try the first boss battle there. I'm hoping the graphics will be a wee bit more better there as the XB1 version could use a little anti-alias love or something.

Edited to add - yup, very much more nicer.  thumbsup

It is quite reasonable on Steam (I think $20) which seems fair even though it is quite an old game.

Yup, $20 for the base game or you can get a bundle with all the DLC for $40. And what that bundle gets you is the 'Special Edition' that is coming out at the end of October for free.  nod

And the final part, Part 4: The Crown of Kings, launches Sept 15th.

The trailer is here and some of the new features:

  • Hand-drawn 3D buildings for you to explore, inside and out.
  • Disguises will let you blend in with the people of Mampang - but be warned, they might not like who you're pretending to be...
  • New artwork from series regulars Mike Schley (maps), Eddie Sharam (monsters) and John Blanche (original art), and a new orchestral theme from composer Laurence Chapman.
  • Multiple endings, multiple goals - can you save Analand? Become the next Archmage? Find love? Die in peace - or live a cursed life?
