I was worried about how the saves worked after (apparently) not being able to save during the tutorial section and getting 'glitched' requiring a restart. However now that I've made it to the Temple, it looks like it is a true 'save anywhere' system which is nice.

And the Map is a little confusing. I thought setting a destination would light something up on it, or at least that I'd then be able to interact with it directly on the Temple floor. What does marking a destination actually accomplish? Maybe I should read the dang manual, or maybe experience with the previous games (which I don't have) would help here? icon_confused

Otherwise, I really like the style of the game and the interactions with Elika - in combat, conversationally and the 'saves' she does. The combat and platforming are not punishingly hard like some games, so hoping the frustration level doesn't ratchet up later on.

Did you end up picking this up? I was curious if you were looking at the "FragFX" setup from SplitFish or something else. I considered this but you couldn't find one (especially the rumored wireless one) anywhere and thought perhaps they had gone under. Turns out they are saying they just couldn't keep up with demand but have ramped up for the release of the .2 version in February of 2009. From their FAQ:

Quote
Why have I heard the Fragfx was unavailable or out of stock all the time? Due to high demand, there has been limited to zero availability of the Fragfx in 2008, a new and improved Fragfx is rolling out to 15 countries worldwide in the next 3-6 weeks. Worldwide demand of the Frag has forced us to increase our production, and more should be available through major distributors very soon - We just haven't been able to keep enough Frags in stock!

Is there a wireless version available, it was reported some time ago? To put an end to the rumours of a wireless Fragfx, there is not one currently; a wireless version is planned 3rd quarter of 2009.

I seem to recall someone here (or on OO) took the plunge and bought one...

it's the first time a voice actor is actually functioning pretty much as an actor

I'm not sure what that sentence means.  Honestly, though, the voiceover community is surprisingly small.  Just using one example brought up earlier, the guy who plays Ratchet has also played Spider-man, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Gabe Logan from Syphon Filter, along with many other voices.  The guy who plays the Arbiter in Halo 3 also does Spawn, Julius from Saints Row, and Anderson in Mass Effect.  Ron Perlman played a lead in The Outfit, Gun, Narc, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction all in the same year and is the voice of Hellboy and Conan.  Hell, you've got Elijah Wood doing double duty as Frodo and Spyro.     I think it probably happens all the time and just isn't as noticeable.

Don't forget Cam Clarke, the poster child for "I've done a voice in every video game ever made." He's been in Metal Gear Solid series, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Vesperia, Mass Effect, God of War II, Robotech, Call of Duty, Jedi Knight, Falllout... and lots more.

And if we want to venture outside of video games to animation voice actors, there's Pixar's "good luck charm" John Ratzenberger, who's been in pretty much everthing they've made or are making it seems.  icon_wink

Had an odd problem early on where I got stuck and had to quit. This is with the PS3 version, not sure if that's relevant or if it was something I screwed up. Early on in what is basically the tutorial section, you come to the first ledge you need to wall grip / slide down and he won't do it. It says to press R2 when hanging from the ledge, I hang down and then... nada. No button seems to do anything, I can go left/right and back up but that's it. Sometimes Elika hangs down with me and sometimes she just follows along the top.

Is there a trick there that I'm missing?  icon_confused

apparently there's quite a few glitches in the game, that being one of them.  I had the same thing happen to me and I just hung there for about 20 minutes trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.  Finally went to the Game FAQs message boards and there was a post about it on the first page.  Just exit out of your game and reload and you should be fine.  Worked for me.    I had another similar glitch after that and had to restart and lost a lot of progress.  I like the game, but too many more glitches that cause me to have to restart and I'm out.

Thanks, was hoping that would be the "solution" but it was way too late last night to start over again. And hoping it doesn't become a continuing issue or it will be time to set it aside and wait for a patch. It's not like there aren't plenty of other things to play.

3215  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Motorstorm Pacific Rift on: November 29, 2008, 07:29:45 AM
I'm enjoying MS: Pacific Rift more than the first. There are four distinct element-based areas on the island - Fire, Air, Water, Earth - which heavily influence the varied courses. Water now cools your car so you can burst longer when wet, while fire/lava has the opposite effect, including setting you / your car on fire. There are a couple of new vehicles and they've (mostly) solved the amount of time it could take to pick one by having a separate "garage" so you pick it once per type and only need to go back there to swap between variants or colors. You can also pick your driver/rider now though it's only cosmetic I think.

Got totally ambushed by Fallout 3, so haven't been back to it for awhile.  icon_wink
3216  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Parents getting a Wii: What do they need? on: November 28, 2008, 03:42:44 PM
Yes, "Wii Sports" comes with the console and includes tennis, baseball, golf, bowling and boxing.

For two players, you'll need to get another controller and (more than likely) another nunchuck as well. Rather than pick up the controller separately, you might considering buying "Wii Play", more casual games like the ones that come with the console with a controller included in the box.

As for games, Mario Kart should be fun for a racing game but I don't know about Wii Music. Make sure to read some reviews, it doesn't seem to be doing so well. As for others... hmmm... incredibly simple to play? Carnival Games, perhaps? The Lego games are fun and can be played co-op as long as you don't mind the plastic-brick-on-brick goofy violence and occassional frustrating bit.

I'm sure others will have better suggestions.

Have they released the patch for the other versions?  I may just grab the PC version for 20 bucks.

Apparently, they're not planning on releasing a patch unless the PS3 version sells enough.  As you can see from the last couple of comments, that's probably not going so well.

That apparently from a comment made by the game's designer:

Quote
While checking out the tweaked “Alone in the Dark” in a San Francisco hotel yesterday, game designer Emile Morel couldn’t explicitly promise such a patch was coming.

“We’re trying to do it,” said Morel. “It’s technically complicated. The size of a patch is very limited by Microsoft. So if we do a patch it would only be about the new control and the new camera.”

Morel says “only” because the PS3 version also includes a new subway chase sequence that would likely be too large to include in just a mere patch.

“We can’t promise it because it is still early,” he said. “We are finishing this [PS3] version first. I guess it also depends on the success of this version. If people review it again and said it’s not worth it…” [laughs]

Time will tell how this all plays out.  Silly me, I ended up ordering this from Amazon.  paranoid

I went looking for this at my local Best Buy since I was considering a purchase and they didn't have it listed on their website. Talked to one of their peoples and apparently they're not planning on carrying it in spite of them knowing it's been "improved". Too much inventory of the original versions they can't unload, apparently.

Found what seems to be a bug. Been working on the GNR quest and fast travelling back and forth between the various locations along the way and Megaton to drop stuff off or sell it. After selling some stuff at Craterside, I noticed she had some Combat Armor for sale - one with a DR of 18 for 174 caps and (2) with a DR of 11 for something like 34 caps. Being flush, I decided to pop for the extra nice Combat Armor since what I was wearing only had a DR of 11.

Imagine my shock when I went back home and swapped armor, only to discover what I'd gotten for my 174 caps was the cheap-ass DR 11 armor, no better than what I already had. So, is this a bug or did the bitch just rip me off?  icon_evil

And with the 'auto-save in buildings' thing, I had to go back and redo a wee bot 'o stuff to get back to a point where I could not buy the armor. Farg.

What's the condition of the armor? It's possible that fully repaired it's an 18, but in it's current state it's an 11?

It's a bug. As long as there are the DR 11 Combat Armor suits in her inventory, that's what I get for my 175 caps. Point to and pay for the DR 18, get the DR 11. Twice, if you like. So it turns out I needed to actually buy the two DR 11 suits before I could buy the DR 18 suit and then I could sell back the two DR 11s.  Sheesh.  icon_confused

Edited to add: just did this for reals a little while ago and after buying the dinged up DR 18 Combat Armor for 175 caps it magically changed to DR 32 in perfect condition, worth almost twice that. Nice lady.  icon_wink

Hmmm... don't recall. The first time I bought it (yes, I did it twice) I bought it and one of the cheaper ones figuring I could use the cheaper one to repair the better one.  Both showed as DR 11 and I don't recall it looking like it would go up to 18 and thought maybe I'd screwed up and hadn't really picked the right one. So I loaded an earlier save and just bought the expensive one. And then went back and decided to forget the whole thing.

I'll go back and see what kind of condition it's in...

I haven't had much time to play this yet, but the 'hand-drawn watercolor-esque' style is just gorgeous and for me falls into the 'unlike anything I have ever played' camp. And from browsing through the guide there seems to be much more depth to it than the demo revealed. Mostly sucked into FO3 at the moment, but planning on getting back to this next. Interesting, but I never thought of this as 'FF-style' while playing and I've played several of those and Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery (etc) as well.  [shrug]
