Go for the Xbox or PS2 version.  Not sure if it's backwards compatable though.

Xbox version isn't; PS2 version is with corrupted water textures on my 80GB.
No problems with the PS2 version on my 60GB that I recall.

No expert here, but I did just go thru this building my own E8400 rig and it looks like too much to me.  Instructions for your MX-2 are here and show a pretty small amount being used. I used Arctic Silver and the instructions here for an Intel Dual Core are a wee bit more detailed. They show a very thin line of compound vertically along the same axis as the core itself. Both recommend a small twist in each direction once seated.

The latter also goes into the do's and don'ts of cleaning stuff like this off. Apparently even a finger print can affect the performance of the compound.  icon_neutral

I'm also a fan of the classic Barry Windsor-Smith Conan comic series - way before my time originally, there are now full-color reprints of Conan, who was not portrayed/drawn as so stereotypically like a comicbook superhero - though, arguably, that's what he was. Still the Windsor-Smith graphics had a kind of dignity that took Conan seriously.

Not before my time. I've got quite a number of his posters rolled up somewhere from when Gorblimey Press was alive and well. And I just had to get this t-shirt when I stumbled across it on TFAW one day.  icon_lol

Consider getting a switch box that supports HDMI, Psyclone has a nice one I'm using. Then both consoles could be connected to the TV via HDMI.

65" Mitsubishi DLP via component and it looks very nice.
3208  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami Wii on: April 17, 2008, 08:30:19 PM
I remember it looking nicer when I upscaled it on my PS3, but I haven't compared the two directly now that I have the Wii version as well. I only did up to the 'cut down the fruit' part then stopped last night, but I didn't have any issues with drawing. Only took one attempt for the rock, barricade and fruit. Don't paint the slash slowly, I think speed counts more here then perfectly horizontal.

Only problem I had was with 'restoring' the stardust river, only got partway across because I hadn't "painted" far enough over. Had to turn back, paint more and try again. Twice.  icon_lol

You can turn it off yourself from the PS button option, but as noted they won't do that automagically.
3212  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Homm5: Tribes of the East Impressions on: April 14, 2008, 06:50:21 PM
Yup, patched up to 1.06 first thing - what a pain that was, seeing as how there's no cumulative patch. And I'd tried *everything* with no luck, using the tweaker, changing resolution and texture size, everything I could think of or was mentioned in the linked thread. Nada.

However, got it working yesterday! Problem is I did a couple of things before checking again, so not sure what fixed it. First I uninstalled my Logitech SetPoint drivers as the wireless mouse was always getting 'stuck' all the time, sometimes for way too long. Replaced it with a wired Razer mouse. That and on a whim installed SP1 for Vista. After that, setting the textures to 'Normal' got it working for me.  icon_confused

Go figger...

3215  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Homm5: Tribes of the East Impressions on: April 12, 2008, 08:51:41 PM
Kind of late, I know, but I just ran into this same problem reinstalling Homm5 on my new build and I'm wondering if you ever got it sorted out? I've found other postings on the same issue - for example here - but none of the 'work arounds' work for me. Seems to be the combination of Vista, 4GB of RAM and an 8800GTX - all of which I now have. I believe it is specific to the GTX model and shouldn't be a problem on the newer GT or GTS but I'm not positive.  icon_confused

I've also found I needed to ditch my wireless mouse for a wired one or it constantly gets 'stuck' or freezes, even on the desktop. Especially sucks in games, some were minor but Homm5 was horrible, so much so it was hard for me just to get the heck out once in. Never mind the 'fine for a second and then bam washed out' low resolution textures issue. [sigh]

Anyway, perhaps one of the things that worked for other people in the linked post will work for you. Or someone in the same boat.

Download, yes - install, no not yet. Here is the readme for the mod if people are interested:

S.S.F. Realism Mod 1.1

Authors: SSF (Sheriff's Special Forces)
Executive Producer: GunMod
Quality Assurance Lead: Fuzzy
Support & Adminstration: TheOnly
Research & Development: Informer
Technical Assistance: Hawk
Comic Relief: Shockwave & Fuzzy
Testing & QA: Entire SSF Squad

This mod takes many factors of an already great game and makes it better for those who play serious coop, single player, or TDM.  This mod is not about adding a bunch of uniforms or guns, but rather improving the existing items in the game
to make your gameplay experience better. We believe in quality over quanity and we hope it shows.

-All Weapons have proper firing modes as per manufactor specs. Guns with Burst mod start in Burst mode

-All Weapons have correct lethality. (One shot head kills are much more common with higher caliber rounds)

-FMJ and JHP Rounds know penetrate items correctly based on round and caliber.
(Example, a FMJ .223 round will penetrate wood and metal doors, where a 9mm FMJ will only penetrate a wood door.
A JHP 9mm will not penetrate wood doors)

-Firing Rates are more correct as to sustained rounds per minute.

-Equipping animations are slightly faster. (Example, Switching weapons is quicker, etc)

-Weapon effects are more realistic. (Example:Throw a flashbang in a room with "loose" items and stuff will fly across the room)

-Body hits will send a larger impulse to the rag doll being shot.

-Death animations are more realistic. Dying suspects and hostages will jerk and spasm from firing nerve impulses.

-Incapacitation animations more pronounced. Incapacitated suspects and hostages will move in more realistic ways. (Trying to get up, moving their head to look around, etc)

-Flashbangs more effective to UNARMORED suspects/hostages. Flashbangs have a slight fatality issue associated to them, but flashbangs have to be RIGHT ON a suspect to kill them.

-CS Gas has the same effect on AI as unprotected players

-Zoom to fire is instant instead of taking 0.5 seconds.

-Recoil, aim factors and several other factors increased for much more realistic weapons handling.

-Optiwand has a higher field of view so that you can see a larger area. Resolution for Optiwand Camera view changed so that the view doesnt look as pixelated.

-The AK-47 and the UZI SD are now available for all game modes.

-Primary weapons can be used as secondary and secondary can be used as primary weapons. (Example Carry MP5 as Primary and carry LTL Shotgun as secondary, etc)

-Option to not choose ANYTHING for a primary or secondary slot. (Useful for training etc) (also No Armor or Now Helmet Modes

-Removed Red and Blue Team GLOW sticks from backs in TDM Mode ONLY

-AI weapons have same stats and use the same limitations of the player now.

-Dynamic Take Downs now possible with correct aiming and recoil.

-Real-world textures used in the "Loadout" screens. Real Weapon Names, Stats, etc.

-The stinger's lethality and incapacitating effects more realistic, Throwing a stinger on an unarmed person will now have a higher chance of killing them.

-Door charges have a higher lethality and stun zone. (someone standing with 5 to 8 feet from door will be knocked unconcious or killed, persons 8 to 15-20 will be stunned, like a flashbang)

-Breaching shotgun can be used for a very close range (within 15 to 30 feet) weapon.

-Several enemy guns have flashlights. (they won't always use them, but sometimes they might, especially higher-level elite suspects)

EASY Setting will not seem much different where as ELITE will be much different!

-Different game modes use the same damage settings. No more getting damaged more for playing co-op versus single player.

-AI can now engage or disengage officers at closer ranges.

-AI is more unpredictable.

-AI more likely to use cover when under fire.

-AI will fake surrendering more often.

-AI "moral effects" changed for more realistic gameplay. (Seeing buddies killed, getting shot, etc)

-AI more prone to engage or kill hostages when threatened or hearing you.

-AI much faster on the draw at shooting when they have decided to attack you.

-AI will run farther when trying to hide.

-When barricaded, AI will watch nearby doors and attack if they notice any nearby doors open.

-AI Swat will clear a room more effectively.

-AI Swat will not watch a non-threat more than a new threat.

-AI in single player gets affected by diversionary items (cs, flash, sting) the same as Co-op.

-Opening Movies and notices removed.

-Very quick "SSF Mod" splash screen at start.
The ONLY OTHER place you will see SSF.
is a very discreet place in the MP server screen.
Didnt want to flood you with "look at me" advertising smile

-Many more that we might have forgotten! smile

After installing the mod, you MIGHT have to reset your game settings (video, sound, controls, etc)

After Uninstalling the mod, you will have to reset your game settings (video, sound, controls, etc)

- When hosting multiplayer, people can see you have the mod on by looking at MOD section of multiplayer list.
It will list as SSF 1.1

- Terrorist Uniforms for TDM Altered so you can visually recognize terrorists from SWAT.

3219  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Elder Scroll Redguard installation/ play problems on: March 10, 2005, 03:02:09 AM
I've actually used Glidos to run Redguard on my XP machine, so I know it can be made to work. Problem is that was 2.5 years ago so I don't remember the gory details.  :? One thing I do remember is you actually have to purchase Glidos (the Voodoo emulator) if you want to continue playing the game after you get it working. The 'trial' version keeps a spinning logo on top of the game as it plays, from what I recall. Information on setting up Redguard with Glidos is here in case you hadn't found it yet.

It does specifically require a 3dFX / Voodoo card, but I'd think you'd have some luck on a machine that doesn't have a 3D graphics card by installing the 'software version'. Trouble is it would look like crap. Best bet to me would be an old machine, running Windows 95 or 98 and an actual Voodoo card. I wonder how hard it would be to find one nowadays? I think I've got an old Pure3D card gathering dust somewhere...
3220  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Anyone play D&D? on: March 10, 2005, 02:44:24 AM
Well, hope you're not planning on joining the IDF as they will brand you as 'detached from reality and suseptible to influence'.

"These people have a tendency to be influenced by external factors which could cloud their judgment, a military official says. "They may be detached from reality or have a weak personality – elements which lower a person's security clearance, allowing them to serve in the army, but not in sensitive positions."

Check out the pictures as well. Looks more like SCA types than 'D&D Players'... not that they're mutually exclusive or anything.

Legitimate, maybe, but sheesh.  :? These so-called "Badge Groups" that do this in support of police or fire fighters don't do this for free. Ask one of them sometime how much of every dollar you send them they keep... you might be shocked at the answer.

I've seen a survey of charitable organizations and the percentage of the monies that actually goes to the charities they are "supporting". It ranges all across the spectrum, from the few that pass on 100% to the few that keep 100% of the money. In the middle there somewhere are the vast majority.  I wish I could find it again...

From what I remember way back when, Nintendo would exchange your Gamecube upon request with one that has the Digital AV port.

I was wondering if that was what they were hinting at when I found this in the 'Important Note' section of the Component cables store page:

Quote from: "The Nintendo Store"
Nintendo GameCube Component Video Questions

The Digital A/V Output port was removed from systems produced after May, 2004 (these systems will have a model number of DOL-101). If you have a Nintendo GameCube without this port, and you wish to play your games in progressive scan, please call our Consumer Service department at 1-800-255-3700, to discuss available options.

Additional Information:

Why have you removed the component video feature from the Nintendo GameCube?
On newer models of the Nintendo GameCube, we opted to remove the digital A/V out port from the system because we found that less than one percent of all Nintendo GameCube players used this feature.

Will future Nintendo GameCube games continue to have the progressive scan feature?
About one-third of licensee-published titles and over 90% of Nintendo-published titles currently have the progressive scan feature. We expect that most Nintendo-published titles will continue to support progressive scan. Each licensee will continue to make the decision of whether or not to include this feature in their future games.

Would be cool if they'd swap them for the 'less than one percent' of us that want to take advantage of that feature.  Guess I'll just have to ask them!

    Summertime Blues
    Heart Full of Soul
    For What It's Worth
    The Seeker
    Mr. Soul
    Seven and Seven Is
    Shapes of Things
They very much put their personal mark on these songs.

I also picked up an album called "a baroque tribute to rush", which is in a nutshell... odd. Imagine songs like Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Fly By Night, etc done in a baroque style - violin, harpsichord, pipe organ, the whole nine yards.

3238  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Purchasing HL2 through Steam questions on: December 05, 2004, 03:48:05 PM
Well, not a Steam expert but...

1) Yes, if you order via Steam you download the product right then. Some of the packages include merchandise and that would need to be shipped to you, but other than that you are in business.  Be prepared for it to take some time, however, no matter which way you go. It not only has to download (or you install) the content, but "prepare" or "unlock" it (I forget the official terms), which is not a speedy process.  :?

2) There's an asterisk for that and it only applies to Day of Defeat: Source right now. Everything else is available. The ordering page is a little confusing as it still says:
Purchase any one of the three Half-Life® 2 Steam packages listed below, start playing Counter-Strike™: Source™ immediately, and be ready to start playing Half-Life 2 the moment it is made available!

Doh!

3) Yes. There is an option to "backup" your files, but I can't say for sure what that actually does as I have yet to try it. Also, from what I understand, if something happens and you need to reinstall, it wouldn't require a repurchase. Simply reconnect to your Steam account and it should download it again. Pretty sure about that, anyway.

I thought there was a "Steam FAQ" somewhere with  answers to questions like this, but I couldn't find it this morning. Anyone?
3239  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Steam (and Half-Life 2, I guess) question on: December 03, 2004, 02:34:40 AM
Ok... all that means is you've already got them, or it happened during that long lull while it was 'connecting'.

Check the Steam News page:

Quote from: "December 2nd Valve"
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Source SDK, and Source Engine updates are available and will be applied automatically when Steam is restarted.

Quote from: "December 1st Valve"
A Source Engine update is available and will be applied automatically when Steam is restarted.

Quote from: "November 30th Valve"
A Half-Life 2 update has been released via Steam. Please restart Steam to apply the update.

Maybe not all that obvious all the time, but as you can see it only happens when you restart Steam.
3240  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Steam (and Half-Life 2, I guess) question on: December 01, 2004, 11:23:01 PM
So then, the next time you start Steam it will download any patches released for any Steam games you own since the last time you had it running. And it'll be obvious it's going on.
