3201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 N00b Has Questions on: October 17, 2008, 06:07:12 AM
I've been assuming it depends on the game and if they connect to the internet/PSN while it runs. Ones that do shut down any downloads for the duration. Others, like Dead Space with no online component, don't.
3202  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space on: October 17, 2008, 01:29:15 AM
Don't recall seeing this earlier but just saw a TV commercial for Dead Space. They show the same "twinkle, twinkle" demo movie that plays if you sit on the start screen for a little while. And the subtitle is "Only the dead survive".  icon_cool
3203  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 N00b Has Questions on: October 16, 2008, 04:35:36 AM
Ok, I see where my confusion was. I've always shut mine down by pushing the PS button and even after this update, if you push it and tell it to shutdown, it shuts down no matter what is going on. Going to the Shutdown option on the XMB gives you the long awaited "shutdown after background downloading and auto install completes" option.  icon_biggrin
3204  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 N00b Has Questions on: October 15, 2008, 07:41:48 PM
Sounds like it does.  Or... Semi, did you do the download in the background? Games will auto install when downloaded in the "foreground" but I really don't think they've changed it so games downloaded in the background will auto anything.  icon_neutral

This might be the first time I choose the console version of a shooter over the PC version. The temptation of playing this on a 42" screen with surround sound is almost too much to resist. Especially with Halloween coming up!

Agreed.  I'm going to try to pick this up tonight if not tomorrow...

Same here. Picked up BIA:HH for the PC but really want to play this on my 65" HD with the surround cranked. Sorry honey, trying to sleep? I'll turn it down... (a little)...  icon_lol

Just picked this up from my local BB who amazingly had it out and on the shelf at noon. Usually someone has to go scurrying around in "the back" to find something on release day.

Just may need to <cough> go home early today.  icon_razz

Yup - you pick from 4 or 5 preset times which are a number of hours. There was also something about allowing it to shutdown under "special circumstances"... something like even if watching a movie or some such.

4. How do I DL a game for my PSP and get it from my PS3 to my PSP?

IIRC, if you go to the options tab (Triangle when the game is selected in the XMB) there should be an option to send it your PSP if it's connected via USB.

Right. From what I recall you not only have to plug the PSP into the PS3 using the USB cable but you also have to put the PSP into 'USB Mode' or some such, which the PS3 will happily tell you if it can't find your PSP. Then you can copy the game as noted from the PS3 to the PSP. Once the copy completes, it will ask you if you want to delete the game file from the PS3.

I'd downloaded it early after having stumbled across a mention of it elsewhere. It's quite nicely done, only wish they'd done English voices - right now it is German only but you can turn on English menus and subtitles.

Download this last night from GamersGate but no time to play yet. Something new was that I was forced to sign up for 'Verified by Visa' in order to complete the purchase. I've purchased three other games from them in the past and this wasn't a requirement before. And to top it all off, all of the links back to the VbV site that explain the how and the why of it were broken.  mad

woah - be very sure it was legitimate, before you sign anything with your card then.. I've had a small trojan operate in my machine, whenever I used legitimate sites, it would make a pop-up window, that required re-typing all the codes on my code... I just clicked close on it, and the payment still worked...

I got that exact same option, but I just clicked "no thanks"    If you order from Newegg that offer the exact same credit protection from Visa.   It should be optional at least it was for me

It was legit, I'm now signed up - something I checked on the official site. I don't recall seeing anything that said 'No thanks' and the button I tried to use to skip that part told me that skipping this step would cancel my order. Wish I had taken some screenshots, maybe there was some simple way that I missed. [sigh]

After going round with GamersGate they contacted PayNova on the issue and this is what I got back:

Quote from: PayNova
Gamersgate has been in contact with us regarding your purchase. The service “Verified by Visa” is connected to your bank/card issuer and is not an optional service. It is an extra security code given to you by your bank for transactions made over internet. You should be able to get more information about the service and your code from your bank/card issuer.

So it seems to be tied to whomever issued the Visa card. And that probably explains why I can't find any information on their site how to get out of the program. Whatever.

Well, this patch has been a complete disaster for me so far, which sucks since I've been looking forward to the Enhanced Edition ever since it was first announced.

Yikes, that does suck. I gave up on the official site after downloads there crapped out on me five times. I couldn't even download the little 'adventures'. Switched over to the mirrors and didn't have a problem after that.

Perhaps it would be worth redownloading everything from one of the other sites, if you haven't already done so, before you give this another go?  Sounds like you'll need to start over again and that does indeed sucketh.

Anyone know under what circumstances the 'Blood Revival Patch' is required?  I've got the uncensored imported version just patched up to 'enhanced' and I believe I remember reading that the patch that restores blood is only needed for the NA version?  icon_confused

Ok, found the news item I was thinking of, seems like I won't need it but others might, so:

Unfortunately in our efforts to make The Witcher: Enhanced Edition as awesome as possible, we made a little mistake... the North American version of the game shipped without a little file that enabled some additional blood effects. We've remedied that situation with the Blood Revival patch, which will be posted here tomorrow but is already available for download at the following sites:

Took maybe 10 minutes or so to install for me... am "working from home" today so just let it do its thing.  ninja

The install is simple enough, as long as everything (patch, language, additional stories) are all in the same folder the patch will install whatever is there automatically. The only part you may have to help her with is the registration check, you'll need to provide your userid and password to the Witcher community so it can check to see if you've registered your copy. Other than that, normal clicks to continue / next and then wait.

Less is used when you're talking about an unquantifiable amount.  For example, "Less Filling."

Fewer is used when the quantity can be defined with a number.  For example, "Fewer calories"  or "Fewer games."

icon_lol Try explaining that sometime to the person checking you out of the "15 Items or less" express lane.

Ahh, I hadn't seen the in-game stuff. It's under "Documents" I think. That helps. Thanks for the links as well. Great game so far!

iirc, some if it is simple stuff like weapons you get, but the good stuff is actual folders you find...kind of hidden around levels.

Right, there's "Intelligence" hidden around the various levels you need to find.

I purchased a PC from Costco for my wife and had problems with the initial (automated) setup not working. It came with free "Concierge" tech support service but I was leery of calling them, not knowing what I would be getting myself into. Turns out the worry was for nothing, it was all "on shore" and the guy I spoke to was very knowledgeable and got us going pretty quickly.

In the process found out there is a hidden partition with the Vista OS and setup utilities. From what I recall, you can use it to create physical media if you want or just use it to reformat the primary partition and setup the OS again, which is what we walked through. Not sure about all the extra crapware, I think it was an option in the setup but its been a while.

So perhaps give them a call and see what they suggest?

It's just looking for TEMP and lots of programs will do that, WinZip is a good example or any installer that first needs to unpack things somewhere.

It still refuses to install on any drive for me even though I have like 400,000 megs more than it needs.

I assume that's because it needs to uncompress to your C: drive first which from reading your other posts seems to be the issue. Try changing your TEMP environment variable (and/or maybe TMP) to point to a drive with more free space.

3235  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need help with my ps3.. on: July 08, 2008, 12:39:06 PM
No, not really. The online 'trouble-shooting' guides are model specific, hence the question.
3236  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need help with my ps3.. on: July 07, 2008, 05:41:17 PM
Maybe this will help, basically it's the online version of the User Guide that ships with the unit, linked straight to the Settings/Display Settings/Video Output Settings:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/videooutput.html

You may need to accept their EULA to get there. If you need access to the trouble-shooting guides or just want to start back at the beginning:

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PS3/Manuals

Since you didn't specify what model you have and the trouble-shooting guides are model specific.

And I guess the other quetion I have is:

Most of these UPS's seem to be aimed at PC users since they come with software (like the geeksquad one).    They are still useable on the TV, consoles, etc right?

Sure, you bet. The software lets you monitor the battery levels and auto shutdown the PC when they reach a certain threshold, so wouldn't be useful for other appliances.

You don't really need the 'battery backup' part so that's your call if that's an extra bonus or just an added expense. You can definitely find something that does surge protected, but they're not going to 'condition' the power like a UPS would. I'll bet I could find some sort of Monster branded gizmo that says it does all that but for the cost you'd end up paying I'd get a UPS. icon_wink

My two cents.
