I wrapped up all the quests that give achievements (with the exception of Strictly Business, which I guess punished me for killing the quest giver after taking the quest)

I'm in the same boat, quest-wise, as I too accepted that one and then killed the quest-giver when I decided I wasn't about to go through with it. Didn't think of it as punishment, however, more like a natural consequence of the decision seeing as there's really no way to complete it after that. Had a similar problem with "Head of State" but continued retrying that one until they didn't get their sorry asses killed on that final trek. And no, I wasn't about to babysit them the whole dang way. disgust

At about 100 hours in, finally went down to the Dunwich building for one of my last bobbleheads, wondering on the trek there... a Lovecraft reference?

Spoiler for Hiden:
But of course! Rather than the Dunwich Horror and Yog-Sothoth we get a drilling company - the Dunwich Borers Corporation, mention of a leather-bound book with strange glyphs, several audio logs and down in the bowels of the building an altar to "Ug-Qualtoth".

 icon_cool

Three more bobbles and I'll have done about as much as I can stand with this character and will set FO3 aside to get back to other games... until the DLC hits, anyway.

Deadwood rocks from beginning to end. Awesome show.

Too bad there really was no end. They wrapped up Season 3 with the understanding they would be doing a Season 4, but before they could come back and start working on it HBO changed their mind and dropped the axe on the show. So, another show I was following religiously that just... stopped rather than ending well.  icon_cry

When pondering a forum name back in the day, I'd had the Beatle's song "Come Together" stuck in my head for days, it seemed... "He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola". The avatar came from a GG discussion where someone had ask everyone to google for their forum name and post the first image that came up. That's what did for me and I decided to adopt it.  icon_smile

SO,anyone have a retail boxed version of the game up and running, and then been able to patch to 2.34.0 without any problems??
Or do you have to uninstall and start from scratch?

I have the Collector's Edition retail disc with the "Elite Texture Pack" installed, and I had no problem upgrading to the newest version.

I have the UK Collector's Edition (retail) and my woes with the patch are earlier in the thread. I had to uninstall and use different earlier patches to get the latest one to work.

FWIW, found this on the PS3 site:

Upscaling DVD Output Settings
Off: Disable upscaled output.
Double Scale*: Upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
Normal: Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen: Upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image.

* This option can be used only when the PLAYSTATION 3 is set to output video at 1080p or 1080i via an HDMI or component AV cables.

I remember being blown away by the ending of an old adventure game called Mission Critical. Not that I remembered any details of it other than Michael Dorn being involved until reading the wiki, but it has always stuck in my mind as a game with a great ending.

I've got an older motherboard collecting dust here, complete with cpu and ram that I'd like to pass on a deserving soul who could put it to good use. So, what I've got:

Abit AN8 SLI nForce4 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
Zalman Silent CPU Cooling
2GB OCZ RAM, DDR400?

It all worked when I pulled it several months ago when I upgraded. All I'm asking is you cover the cost of shipping and it's yours. Now, at that price there's no guarantees, but it worked just fine when I yanked it and I don't see why that won't continue to be the case.

Any takers?  icon_biggrin

For what little it's worth, I just removed the regular DVD player and plugged the new PS3 in this morning. Hooked the PS3 up to the TV (1080p plasma) and popped in Transformers Blu-Ray to see what it was like. Freakin' amazing. I was really blown away by the quality of both the sound and the crispness of the video. Very happy.

I was also moderately impressed with the sound upgrade on regular DVDs playing in the PS3, but didn't really notice significant visual differences.

Just curious... did you enable the upscaling for DVDs?

So my PS3 question: can its DVD remote turn off the unit itself or do you still have to get your lazy sloth butt off the couch to switch it off manually? And is it compatible with any universal remotes?

If you use the PS3 remote then it CAN turn the console off.  For other universal remotes it's a bit more sticky (though the general answer is no) but see here for more discussion:

http://www.gamingtrend.com/forums/index.php?topic=30864.0

Or you can use the PS3 controller to turn it off. I've got a Harmony that controls everything except the PS3 and I just use the controller for the on/off part. Even with the TV off, it's just hold the PS button down for a couple of seconds and then X,X and it shuts down.

Yup, confirmed that the BIOS is defaulted to Legacy mode rather than AHCI, hence it showing that master/slave relationship on the POST screen. After googling around, about the only thing I can see as an alleged advantage to AHCI is support for NCQ, and I find differing opinions on if there really is any advantage to it or not. One of the two drives supports NCQ and the other doesn't as best as I can tell and I have a Gigabyte motherboard as well, so perhaps I should just leave well enough alone and stick with that Legacy IDE / fake master slave setting.  icon_wink
3221  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SATA questions on: December 22, 2008, 06:38:55 PM
OK, fair enough. Any thoughts on the master/slave question?
3222  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / SATA questions on: December 22, 2008, 05:59:41 PM
Building a computer for my little brother and this is the first time building one that has all SATA drives - two hard drives and two removable, so a couple of perhaps silly questions.

1. The way I plugged things in I ended up with each hard drive as "master" paired with a removable as a "slave" to it. I want the two hard drives on difference channels but wasn't sure if there way any issue slaving the other drives off of them or if they should be on a different (totally separate) channel and perhaps slaved together? Or does it all not really make that much of a difference? icon_neutral

2. I also got the two hard drives "backwards" so the smaller one for the O/S was "drive 1" while the large one was "drive 0". Vista didn't seem to care and asked me which of the two to install on and everything drive letter wise is fine. Was just wondering if not having the boot drive as drive zero would affect / confuse anything down the line?  If so, is it as simple as just swapping the two SATA connectors on the motherboard?

Thanks!

I have the UK Collectors Edition and, as posted earlier, a reinstall didn't work for me with the 2.34 patch. However, what *did* work was something posted in the thread I linked to. Rather than go from the installed 2.02 directly to 2.12, I had to use two patches - 2.02 to 2.10 and then 2.10 to 2.12 and then everything after that went fine.

However, having display driver problems that prevent me from playing, but that's a subject for another post.  icon_evil

Anyone else having a problem installing the latest (2.34) patch? It does a check to make sure none of the files it will update have been "modified" and when I first ran it against my 2.31 version with the Elite textures loaded, it failed saying files were modified. Fine, figured it was the Elite stuff, so uninstalled and tried again. Still failed. Fine, uninstalled the dang game and did a clean reinstall - 2.02, patch to 2.12 then patch to 2.31 without ever launching the game or adding the Elite textures. The 2.34 patch still fails for the same reason.  icon_evil

This is the UK Collectors edition, btw and using UK patches as well.

Anyone know if it is possible to change weapons in VATS mode so you can lob a grenade, then switch to a pistol/rifle, and fire again?

Hmm, I don't think so, if you mean what I think you do.  You can hotkey your weapon choices, to make the switch faster, but once inside VATS, I'm pretty sure it goes for as many moves as you've entered into it, with the equipped weapon when you entered VATS.  Of course, that is until the target dies, or you run out of AP. I was always finding myself deciding whether to put every shot on the first mob, then if it dies before all the AP's are used up - pick the next target, and on - or put two shots on one, then add one or two to the next nearest enemy, etc.  For what you want, you'd have to do it manually, outside of VATS, but you could switch weapons then.  There should be plenty of time to do that with the hotkeys, before moving to the next enemy - especially if you took cover right away.

Btw, there is a perk you can get at level 20, that I think is the best one in the game!  Make sure you choose your perks carefully prior to level 20, so you can choose this one, if you think it's as good as I do.
Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm not in my game now, so I don't know the title of the perk, but this is what it does:  if you kill a mob while in VATS, your AP is completely refilled.  Now, I know that all I have to do is put all my VATS shots on the nearest enemy, if I kill it, I have full AP for the next closest mob.

Just got that one when I hit level 20 over the weekend. Me likey. Alot.  nod
Spoiler for Hiden:
Death's Sprint or something close to that.

Well, at this point, that seems to be in the PC version.  No word has come about the consoles.  However, if they don't add it, they're just dicks.

Not sure why people think this would just be the PC version. They mention in the podcast and on the Products page for "The Ultimate Box" that it will be on the PS3, the 360 and "for the first time ever" the PC. So it seems that the PC gets the focus because it will be brand new on that platform, but everything will be available across the board including the "Party Pack" and the "mountain of new refinements" in February 2009.
