2961  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA] Lost Cities - Any one know where it's gone? on: February 28, 2009, 09:20:47 PM
That's what I was wondering, perhaps it was delisted? From the XBLA wiki:

Quote
In an effort to "focus on quality over quantity", Microsoft will begin to delist older underperforming Arcade titles. In order for a game to be delisted it must be at least six months old, with an average score of below 65% on review-aggregator website Metacritic, and a less than 6% conversion rate. Microsoft will give a three month notice prior to delisting these titles. Curiously, delisted titles won't be removed from Xbox live completely, they will just be inaccessible through Xbox live marketplace via normal methods. If you have already downloaded a delisted game, you can recommend it to another user, and they will receive a link to download the game.
2962  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: H.A.W.X. PC demo due Monday on: February 28, 2009, 02:46:17 PM
Yah looks nice but there's no "sim" in it, really. It's more akin to "Ace Combat" than "Lock On". There's no take off or landings from what I've read, the cockpit is non-functional and you can't turn your head to speak of... they want you to use their outside third-person "dog-fight cam" instead. And while it may very well be a "success" if all you count are downloads, there's been quite a bit of discussions around about problems with the way the game was designed and plays, and the demo has turned off a lot of people who would normally have jumped on anything remotely "sim-like". And let's not get into the debate about "assistance off" versus "assistance on".  Roll Eyes

This was the first game I remember buying that 'required' a Pentium. The clerk selling it to me squinted and ask 'You do have a Pentium processor, don't you?'... Why, yes, of course! says my 486 DX2/66 owning self. Made it through most of the game before it bogged down and became unplayable near the end.  icon_frown

And now that I've owned all kinds of Pentium processors I don't think I ever went back and revisited it... but this is making me want to try. Cheese FMV and all.  icon_cool

i think TiLT hit on the real answer...games cache information all over your computer, both in RAM and on the HD, during play.  when you exit a game, it takes time for the program to clean up after itself and remove all the data that it was using.  while the information stored in RAM can be cleared pretty quickly, clearing data from a HD takes longer and is most likely what is happening while your games is in the process of shutting down.  unfortunately, it's a necessary part of the process and there's not really much that you can do to speed things up.

That was in my first post.  icon_wink

Perhaps a good defrag is in order?
2965  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why do games take so long to quit? on: February 25, 2009, 10:05:30 PM
OK. When you quit, is there alot of disk activity? Or is it where it takes a long time to slowly... erase... the... game... screen? Basically, what is the behaviour you're seeing while games are quitting?
2966  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why do games take so long to quit? on: February 25, 2009, 10:02:05 PM
How much RAM is in your PC?  I've seen issues like that on systems with 1GB of RAM that basically went away with 2GB or more. It seems like memory has been swapped out and when you quit it's more work for it to 'release' all of it from the page/swap file rather than pure RAM, hence the delay.
2967  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: A good Glide wrapper? on: February 25, 2009, 04:28:10 PM
The only one I've ever tried was GliDOS and that only for 'Red Guard' where it worked well, not sure how many other games it supports. The other one I'd heard about was 'dgVoodoo' but never took it for a spin.

Isn't Drakensang coming out this week for the PC as well?  I know that's one I'm looking at getting.

I thought that was last week actually. It's not showing up on this week's EB releases, so I'm not quite sure.

Gamestop is showing it as 'usually ships in 24 hours' but none of the local stores has it yet.

Yeah, I just checked and it was not available at any of our stores yet either even though it is available within 24 hours.  Same thing with Puzzle Quest.  I guess I could just order both of them smile  Or I could get them from Amazon smile

Amazon was showing 2 to 3 weeks for Drakensang to ship, so I ended up ordering it from NewEgg - a couple of bucks off and free shipping right now. It went out that same day.

Hmmm... was interested in this from what little we've seen so far but this has really eliminated any of that for me barring great reviews of the final product:

Quote from: Joystiq, 10/2008
Unfortunately, this supposed "comedy shooter" is less "Shaun of the Dead" and more "Disaster Movie." Although it attempts to make fun of the shooter genre (and the industry as a whole), uninspired and mediocre gameplay mechanics hinder it from garnering the respect a proper parody needs. The poorly developed story elements also need serious reworking. The game's greatest asset, its unique premise, is stunted by generic game design -- and that's a pity.

Well... on the PS3 front, you can use any "laptop", i.e. 2.5" form factor SATA hard drive. Pretty painless, I put a 250GB WD into mine, was pretty dang painless. Biggest thing is deciding what you really need to backup/restore and getting a large enough thumb drive.

Yeah, I kind of want to move everything over.  Looks like I'd need @ 50GB to back it up.

I'd be surprised if you really needed everything. I deleted all of the games that installed themselves to the hard drive, not the saves or anything of that nature but the games themselves and any downloaded updates, some of which were 4 or 5GB apiece. First time you run them post upgrade, all that comes back. And the System Backup the PS3 does will not span media and you've got no ability to pick and choose what to backup, so keep those two things in mind.

Picked this up last night but really didn't have much time to play. Grabbed the Nyko pistol as well, works more better than the Zapper for stuff like this. Love the grindhouse style, but had to warn a friend who was thinking about picking this up who has a wee one and a sensitive wife that he'll need to play it when they're out of earshot as there is quite a bit of naughty language in it... even in the menus.  icon_wink

Cool that one of the unlockables is "Dual Wield mode". May need to buy another pistol, it seems.

High speed emergency brake parking between two other parked cars, one where you end up facing the opposite direction you started the manuever from.

My biggest gripe at the moment is the fact that you can't invert the X-axis and it seems completely ass-backwards to me. To me it's counter-intuitive to come up to an intersection in an alley, want to go left and have to push the stick to the right to do that. mad

For the restart, it's "right" on the d-pad or arrows for the normal "EZ Drive" stuff and you'll see one of two new options - Restart current event if you're in one, or Restart previous event for the last one you completed.

If you watch Episode 21 of "Crash TV" on the Criterion site you'll see them restarting a race. From what I recall, it's off the "EZ Drive menu" but don't recall exactly where... sorry.

It sucks that Afro Samurai isn't awesome. If you take the plunge and buy this game, there will be times when you'll be playing, having a blast, and think that I'm full of crap. Falling through the air while brawling with Afro Droid while rocking out to some fat beats is an amazing experience, but when you couple that with a piss-poor camera, terrible platforming sections, and cheap/mentally challenged bosses, the end product suffers.

Don't doubt that there is fun to be had with Afro Samurai, but be ready to deal with a lot of lame to get to it.

Argh... you can only invert the Y-axis (which I don't need to) but for some stupid reason you cannot invert the X-axis which is ass-backwards to me. Never mind that you have to quit the game to tweak any options.  mad

Don't think this is really any kind of a spoiler but just in case:

Spoiler for Hiden:
You are helping the Outcast group get into a locked vault / cache of weapons, I assume from the period in question. The only way to unlock the vault is to complete the simulation campaign and they need you to do that for them. Once complete, you (apparently) get your pick from the cache in question.

how is it with these PSP games, can they be played on the PS3, or is that just a select few?

I don't think they can ever be played on PS3, at least not in the conventional sense.  There are some games, like Echochrome, that have versions on both PSN (for PS3) and PSP but it's technically not the same game.  PS1 titles can be played on both, however.

You might be thinking of "Remote Play" where certain PS3 games can be played on the PSP, where the game still runs on the PS3 but streams wirelessly to the PSP and is controlled / played from there. It doesn't work the other way, however.
