Picked up season 1 of Dollhouse on the way home and watched the unaired episode "Epitaph One" this evening, also known as the 13th or Felicia Day episode. I really don't want to spoil anything for people who will be watching it (even though now that I look around every detail of it is out there in the wild), not at all what I was expecting. Actually, not really sure what I was expecting but I know it sure wasn't this. Very cool. thumbsup

The "one" in the title makes me wonder if they will continue this part of the story next season.

Is this a known issue with PS3s? Should you not operate your system this way?

As far as I'm concerned, you should never operate a CD based system that way period. You're putting a constant strain (gravity) upon the drive mechanisms, and it sounds like it would cause them to wear out much faster than they would otherwise.

I agree, for whatever that is worth. While I know you can operate them that way, I wouldn't ever consider it and have always had my consoles horizontal.

Its at least in Scandinavia - I called them, Nordic Film, because I was pissed at Sony, but Sony in Denmark had NOTHING to do with service on PS3 or the PS3 at all, strangely enough.

The lady who held a high level exec position (From my job I know how to get a hold of people like this :-D ) told me that they had a LOT of ps3 60 GB BCs set aside - enough for a few years... As for the rest of the world? I've no clue, but I dont see why the same shouldnt be the case anywhere else? OR perhaps its because we have some rather draconian rights as a consumer here in Denmark so they HAVE to be able to replace it

That is similar to what I heard, that they had quite a cache of the 60GB models strictly for repairs / replacements. Nothing official, mind you, but what I've seen people report in forums on the web. Hope I never need to find out how true this is. Or isn't. icon_wink

Quick question about backups - when you say it backs up 'everything', does that include downloaded games/demos/etc.?

'Everything' as in everything currently on the hard drive from what I could tell from using it. So yes, installed games, demos, pictures, videos - the works. Account information, setup details, etc are stored in 'memory' as in some sort of EPROM and are not lost when your hard drive is replaced (or upgraded as I did). No clue what happens when the system itself is replaced, if they transfer that information or not.

SONY,if still under warranty will replace it but they wont replace it with another 60/80gig BC machine,as they have stopped doing them now

Out of curiousity, do you have a 'cite' for this, a source? Hadn't seen anything about that but wonder about it every now and then, if my launch 60GB ever bites the dust.
2929  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 red rings of death equivalent... on: July 26, 2009, 01:38:04 AM
From what I've read, if you have a problem that does seem to be the common one but I wouldn't say it is happening alot out there and certainly nowhere near Microsoftian levels.  icon_wink

For your saves, you should be able to back those up by copying them to a flash drive. Or you may even be able to back your system up if you have a large enough target... just be aware the backup is for everything and it won't span so what I did when I upgraded my drive was delete the installed game files. They are easy to get back the next time you play and they'll automatically patch themselves back up again as well.

To be fair, it's sort of a retarded question.   I mean I've owned a total of 3 consoles-PS1, PS2, PS3.  If I have to pick the PS1 as worst, does that mean it's a bad console?  Of course not.  The question should really be, "Which is your least awesome console?"

Well, I disagree. This isn't about least favorite or least awesome, it's about your worst purchase as in the one you deeply regret making / buying. And that means not everyone needs to answer if they like or at least don't regret anything they own or have owned.

How do these last two look and play compared to UaKM? I loved them back in the day when monitors were smaller and pixels didn't really bother me all that much. Having some audio 'issues' running UaKM (nothing deal breaking) but I need to run the game in a window to get any kind of acceptable detail out of it. And sometimes the FMV looks decent and sometimes it's a pixellated mess.

So, from the screenshots it looks like things get better with the newer games, is that the case?

In the same boat. I'm surprised at how little time I've actually played anything on it and it spends most of its time turned off and collecting dust. The only thing recently that got it turned back on and dusted off was HotD: Overkill.

My DSLite and PSP get occasional use with Dark Spire and Crimson Gem Saga respectively but sat before that. I use the heck out of my PS3 for both PS3 and PS2 games plus BluRay movies and my 360 has been playing Fallout 3 for the last 120+ hours. Never owned any of the older 'consoles' or gaming systems other than an Intellivision when I was a kid, was always an Apple II and then a PC gamer until all of the hardware mentioned above came into my life.

Or you could just get the standalone $98 player at Wal-Mart...especially if you wanted to watch the movies now but also wanted to wait until this fall for the rumored price drops on the better players or the PS3.

You could get 2 of and have a spare just in case.  You would still be saving $200 over the PS3.

Seriously I think if you are just looking for a Bu Ray player I would recommend getting a stand alone. Not only is it less expensive but in my opinion the PS3 is kind of clunky as a blu ray player.

I really don't find anything 'clunky' about the PS3 as a BluRay player and being the picky and crotchety old man that I am a $98 player is not something I would buy.  icon_neutral

Thanks for the advise but please understand that my goal here is not to spend as little money as possible but to get the best value for the features and quality that I am looking for.  Heck, I'm having a hard time wanting to buy one in the two hundreds because of the features they seem to be missing, checking reviews I find as many 'cons' as 'pros'. However, checked at Costco and they have a Sony "BDP-BX2" for $249 right now and since that seems to be the same as an S360 I may end up picking one of those up even if there's no eject function on the remote or some of the other features I'd like. And still considering the LG390 at $350 from BB this week as that seems to be at the top of many lists for players in that price range.

Hmmm... the rumored PS3 Slim that may be coming out around the end of this year or perhaps not until next year? I can't tell from Googling around what one would get besides the smaller form factor. The pictures I've seen of what it allegedly will look like are goofy, a PSWii stuck on a cutting board. So, serious question - why hold out for the slim?

As do I. I seem to remember it having alot of potential but buggy and while the "special edition" helped it really couldn't rescue it.

Not read all this thread but got a question. Im thinking of repurchasing it. Last time I had only the normal release game. But Im seeing the normal one for $29 and the enhanced edition for $39. Is'nt all the stuff in the enhanced edition FREE to those who have the normal version? Why pay $10 more for the EE version?

its a few Gb's worth of download, so thats probably why - as someone else told me, there are still a lot of people on dialup in the US, they'd spend weeks downloading it. But other than that - its free yes

FYI - note that the EE comes with 5 disks (game, music, soundtrack, editor, making of) plus a map and two printed 'books' - one is a short story excerpted from 'The Last Wish' and the other is the 'Official Game Guide'. All of that is free to download, I do believe but this gets you the map and manuals printed plus the physical media.
2950  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 versus stand-alone BluRay player on: July 11, 2009, 08:05:48 PM
Was wondering what people thought about comparing comparably priced BR players to a PS3. I've already got a 60GB PS3 downstairs but just put a new plasma off in an upstairs 'computer room' as well and was looking at some players like the Samsung BD-P3600 or the LG BD390 both of which are basically $399.99 players from local retailers.

Now, that same $399.99 would get me an 80GB PS3 with practically all of the same features AFAICT, except for maybe the Netflix streaming which I already do from my PC and 360 but which I also hear may be coming to the PS3. So I'm wondering... would I honestly be better off with a dedicated player? It's not like I *need* another PS3 but if it's just as good of a player (and it seems to be) and I could play the games I already own on it as a "bonus" I'm wondering why not go that way.  icon_neutral

However, Mechwarrior took place in a much more futurey future than what that shows.  Could still be a reboot.  I'd much rather it be a SHOGO reboot, though, given the look!

Around 400+ years in the future for their first appearance: 2439. SHOGO was way more... Japanese... as the wiki page puts it "anime-style". And in a way more like a large "Heavy Gear" type mech. IMHO.

2956  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coprophagia: I know what it means on: July 05, 2009, 01:22:46 PM
Technically, that would be autocoprophagia as in the eating of their own poop rather than that of others. And some breeds seem to be predisposed to it more than others, we have two dachshunds and that seems to be a common thing for them. I think part of the issue is dachshunds are notorious over-eaters and will gladly eat whatever they are given until they are more giant sausages than petite wieners. So we're careful about their portions but I'm sure they think they're starving to death most of the time.

We've tried various things, including the stuff you can put in their food to make the end product 'unappetising' but the only thing that really works for us is close monitoring and quick cleanup. They know they're not supposed to do that, but when the urge is upon them all that yelling does is make them eat faster.  disgust

One thing to check, though, is to make sure it's not coming from any dietary or nutritional deficiency. There's a lot of articles out there on the subject, here's one a quick google turned up for me this morning.

Good luck!
