I don't recall having any kind of widescreen issue when I played it.  icon_neutral

it looked like every character model was stretched out too long.

Right, figured that's what you meant - an aspect ratio issue but I played it on a 24" widescreen and don't recall having that issue. But then I also don't recall what resolution I ran it in either. Still have it installed, should crank it up and check again.

It was clearly a pilot as it leaves you hanging with tons of interesting sub-plots ready to be explored for all the characters.

And that was my biggest problem with this, not having a clue that was the case coming into it. I kept thinking, what kind of a conclusion can they possibly come to in the next 30 minutes? 10 minutes? Dang, then it just ended after laying all that groundwork and starting to get to the interesting bits. That's fine for a pilot with a series coming but to do it when there's basically only a snowball's chance in hell of the series getting picked up just didn't seem right to me.  icon_neutral

Reading afterwards online I saw that they really just wanted to get their work out there in front of people and perhaps to raise a groundswell of support for the series itself. But then, as noted, even if they green-lighted the series Fox would have killed it in its infancy.

2820  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3 - Point Lookout is up on live on: June 24, 2009, 08:35:47 PM
I pulled it down late last night so didn't get much time with it.  You get a message that a riverboat has anchored at the mouth of the Potomac and is looking for passengers to Point Lookout. I bailed on my Broken Steel quest just to check it out. Fawkes and I buzzed down there, picked up a new quest from a lady looking for her little girl who ran off to PL then bought a ticket and took off. Just like The Pitt, no companions are allowed and you have the same strange PITA thing where it scatters them to the winds again even if you leave them home. icon_neutral

Got off the boat, picked up a double-barrelled shotgun from the store on the waterfront there and then started wandering. First sub-quest is to go "Investigate the mansion" but I never made it that far. I'm at level 21 with Winterized Power Armor and got ganged up on and killed by the local yocals (axe and shotgun wielding) once I headed out into the (literally) bubbling swamp. Which was OK, I didn't try very hard to stay alive due to the lateness of the hour. I'm going to go back to BS and finish up that quest line, level up some more before I go back to Pl again.

From what I saw there was a waterfront area, a carnival, lighthouse, mansion and lots of swampland.

They did mention, however, that they thought the directional feedback could come in handy in MP because (allegedly) you could use it to tell the direction the fire was coming from. So perhaps just up enough for that without being a handicap otherwise?

2824  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3 DLC: Point Lookout on: June 23, 2009, 08:04:53 PM
I really don't get this complaint, or more precisely the complaint that the game actually ended. From what I recall, both original Fallout games (1&2) had a definite end as well and then when Bethesda does the exact same thing they get whacked for it. Even worse, the first one had a time limit and when time ran out you were done no matter what was going on. Thankfully they patched that out so that you could take your sweet time and explore, but the game still ended with the main quest was completed. Fallout 3 continued this 'tradition'.

Still, I'm glad they made an effort to address this as I really wanted to keep the game going after the main quest. Broken Steel removed this "hard ending" and allowed the game to continue (basically open-ended) after you complete the main quest. Seems to me to be a difference in the current gaming landscape and the popularity of "sand box" type games which weren't really all that prevalent all those years ago.

I've got 120+ hours invested in FO3 now and am still looking forward to additional DLC.

Also you can read about it here where it notes it is an all new area, 1/5 the size of the original maps and not recommended for characters under level 17.

That's interesting and the first I've heard about this DLC being recommended for a particular level.  Not that I'm complaining, and I think it's fair to assume that almost all the people interested in Fallout 3 DLC at this point are people with high level characters.

All that said, the official page for the DLC doesn't say anything about level 17 and I won't be surprised if it's like Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt, where a character straight out of Vault 101 had access to those new areas.

I'm sure you'll have access to it immediately but several sources on the 'net are saying basically the same thing about the difficulty level of it. Another quote:

Quote
In Point Lookout, the Raider niche has been filled by Tribals, fervent cultists who paint their faces and utter religiously-themed battle cries. Playing as a Level 20+ character, we actually had a tougher time killing a few Tribals with a Chinese Assault Rifle than we expected. Point Lookout is more difficult than much of the previous DLC, and is tailored for players who have beaten Broken Steel and are on their way to level 30. In fact, we’re told the initial message clueing players in to Point Lookout’s location will include a warning that it is quite dangerous. The Lead Producer of Fallout DLC translated: players should be at least Level 17 or so, and even those in the early 20s will face a healthy challenge.

Locked as in... you can only download it to a 'Go' and not a regular PSP? I can't imagine so. I would think they'd be cutting their own throats if they made a downloadable game 'Go only' for quite some time.

so what exactly does this DLC include? I can't find much on it.

It's an new adventure in a new area, which apparently includes a swamp.  The devs say it's a very large open area to move around in and presumably there will be a few new enemies and weapons.  It doesn't raise the level cap or do anything like that.  Most expect they are going with a "scary" vibe with this DLC.

Found this in an online interview and sent it to a friend asking what Point Lookout was all about:

Quote
It is a boardwalk, a swampy area that wasn’t directly hit by bombs, like the Pitt, but it’s got tons of mutations from all the runoff of the water. So you have the Hillfolks, which are the locals. There are three variations; you saw one called the Scrapper. And then there is a bigger one that wields an axe, sort of our melee guy. The area has a lighthouse and a bit of a board walk, so we just used the location and fictionalized it in terms of the boardwalk, the ferris wheel, the lighthouse. There is an old cathedral there, graveyards, we call it a mini-wasteland. We wanted to recreate the experience of a wasteland in this DLC.

Also you can read about it here where it notes it is an all new area, 1/5 the size of the original maps and not recommended for characters under level 17.

I just redeemed mine about 30 minutes ago with no issues.  By the way, digging the game.  I've always wanted to play the game, but always get overwhelmed with deck customization.  Since they don't really have that in this game, it is nice to be able to play, but not have to worry about that aspect.  I played MTGO a bit here and there, but just get overwhelmed by people who have crazy decks.

Still no go with mine, sent an email to support. BTW, my experience pretty much matches yours Grue - played casually umpty years ago with friends, usually at work at lunch. But after the endless stream of expansions, the hunt for rare cards, having no real desire to go all crazy with desk building and running afoul of the isane collector/tweaker types I dropped it. I'm enjoying getting back into it with this version but was reminded of the olden days when I had no clue what a "fattie" (or some of the other terminology being slung around here) was, so went googling. Not to derail this too much, but how does one tell what MtG cards are from what release / era / whatever? I got into CCGs 15 or so years ago and bought way too many cards from different games - MtG, ST:TNG (have a complete mint premier edition somewhere), Mechwarrior, Wyvern, who knows what else. Dug out some magic cards, I know my old decks are again in that magical 'somewhere' but these are some remnants / dups I guess, probably 200+ in a binder 9 to a page. The only ones with a date are for the artwork which is copyright 1994, the rest have no date. Some must be from 'Legends' as I have four copies of the rules changes that came with those cards.

Is there someplace where I can check what's what? icon_neutral
