1. How do you find whats on sale?

2. How do you view user reviews?

1. Not sure as they just revamped their site. Subscribing to the newsletter is one way. Ah, there's a 'News' section on the RHS down near the bottom. Or here.

2. There is a 'Reviews' tab on each game's page.

I don't know what in the hell I thought I was remembering, but I can't get this farking thing to run under Vista.  icon_evil

Seemed to work unpatched, but I only watched the intro and went to the menu. Patched to 1.70 and... nothing. Lots of disk and cdrom activity... nothing. Got a cracked "XP" executable, back to starting with that and running in XP SP2 compatability mode. However, going to 'New Campaign' gets me the big finger pointer, the "X" to quit and a black screen. Tons of posts from people in the same boat out there in the wild, it seems. It works for some, however, so maybe there is hope for others but it doesn't seem to be in the cards for me.  icon_cry

Edited to add: Not quite sure what made it work, but an uninstall followed by a reinstall, patch, compatability mode and hardware acceleration off in game now (as before) has it working for me. Bumped up the resolution to 1600x1200 (enabled via regedit) and just like Gycerine everything works except there's no in-game menu text. The buttons and sliders are there, but they're not labelled. Read somewhere it doesn't have a working font for the higher resolutions...

I've read a couple of Wilson's books too. I re-read one a few years ago. I think. It was set in the 80s or so in New York. What with all the Pendergast books I read last year and then trying to remember this one, well I think I'm cornfused.

But, I'm a sucker for recurring characters (Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, etc), so maybe I'll revisit Repairman Jack (though I think in the book I read, he wasn't known as Repairman Jack). Thanks for the reminder!

Know the author but for some reason hadn't heard of this series that I recall and in poking found this is a fairly long and still ongoing series. Just what I need, yet another series where I might plow through what's out there and then wait for the next one... and wait... Song of Fire and Ice, anyone? icon_wink

From the author's official site:

Quote from: F. Paul Wilson
By the time I reached the end of The Tomb, I realized I had a series character. I didn't feel I was ready to write a series then, so I left him bleeding to death at the end. But the guy wouldn't die. The Tomb never went out of print, and through the years it amassed a huge following. So after 14 years of pleas from readers, I wrote a second Repairman Jack novel. Legacies was so much fun I had to do another, and itís been a book a year since then.

But this is not an open-ended series. I will not run Jack into the ground. I'm figuring on ending his saga in 2011 with book fifteen.

Do these tend to hold up?

Honestly, I don't recall any mention of time travel or I would have thought the same thing. Didn't they just say "their previous attempts" and something about no-one had been able to do it before?  icon_confused

Spoiler for Hiden:
That could be, as they didn't specifically say that they went back in time. But I don't think it's that far of a stretch to say that when they mention their previous attempts to eliminate John Connor, it brings up memories of the previous Terminator films. Plus, why is Kyle Reese the #1 priority on the Skynet death list unless they realize that he is John Connor's father?

 icon_biggrin

Spoiler for Hiden:
I agree, it's not a far stretch at all to think of the previous films at that point. However, as I think you noted earlier Kyle is too young at this point in the timeline, so I'm assuming that particular attempt has yet to happen. And I got the impression we got to see the very first "I'll be baak" T800 come off the line, or at least the first one any humans had seen. Just checked and unless they've totally porked the timeline, this movie takes place in 2018 and an older, captured T800 goes into the past from the year 2029.  They certainly do seem to know that he is John Conner's father, hence the #1 spot on the death list, this just seems to be another in a long line of failed attempts to kill John and now Kyle, ultimately leading up to the 'leap' back in time to prevent him from being born by killing his mother.

Not just patches, but 'hints' as well. I was playing pretty much everything Infocom made back in the day and when you got stuck, you could be stuck for days or weeks. You'd bother your friends and family and ask them what they would do. You thought about it, drew maps and thought some more... then felt this great rush when you finally figured it out. And then one day there were InvisiClues.

Today if some goofy puzzle in an adventure game hangs me up for more than a handful of minutes, I'm off to the web for a walkthru. Really should have more discipline. icon_neutral

Every once in a while they do the inspirational stuff (which I don't think you were lumping into the zero chance group), like the girl with the spinal deformity and I think it adds a touch of class that even though those contestants have no chance the judges and producers are patient and even give them air time.

I remember one season of American Idol, there was this old man- found it who obviously was outside the age limit but he told his wife before she died that he'd sing on the show.  Not only did they humor him, they gave him a solid few minutes of air time and the judges were all genuinely touched by the gesture....

Right, definitely was not meaning to include anything of the sort you mentioned. And while both shows do have their class moments, its seems much more so the norm on this show than AI. IMHO.

Jokes like the star wars girl are usually pretty rare.

True, thankfully. I guess they feel they need to include them from time to time but it hurts me to watch them and I tend to change the channel for those parts. I'd rather just see the 'decent' folks, even if they didn't make it or were only marginal. Some people out there are truly delusional about their "talent" and are just devastated when they don't make it. Or pissed off.

You know, it's nice to make an office your "own" with personal items and such.  That is, until it's time to pack it all up.   disgust

At least they've been accommodating in that I don't have to be finished today and can return to the office throughout all of next week.  They've also offered to allow me to continue to use my company cell phone on their dime until I purchase a replacement and retrieve all of the contact information stored in my current phone.  I guess in light of the situation that was kind of them.  It's at least better than no "severance package".

That whole "accommodating" part is certainly not the norm from what I've seen, you got pretty lucky there. I used to be in the same camp with lots of personal crap in my office/cube but no longer. I've seen too many people basically walked out the day they are let go with little time to pack up their shit. And once with zero time, due to an alleged (bullshit) infraction he was gone before we realized it. It was like an alien abduction - everything still there, coffee warm in the cup... but he was gone. We eventually got to pack his stuff up for him... under supervision. Which seems to be fairly common as well, the 'under supervision' part. So now I keep my personal stuff to a bare minimum... I think just a mug at the moment. Besides, I'd rather just leave like it was a normal day rather than walking out with boxes of crap and a tree under my arm.

And I hear more and more horror stories about people having their laptop and cell phone immediately taken, for fear of them doing something evil, I guess. The 'horror' comes in when people have been complacent and accumulated personal stuff on their laptop and now those emails, photos or videos you had nowhere else are gone forever. Or something as simple as phone numbers, who needs to memorize them any more when the phone does that for you? But without them backed up, recorded or synced elsewhere, a phone loss of any kind can suddenly mean you can't call most of the people you know because you have no fricking idea what their number is.  icon_neutral

I was out of work for the first time in my life for three months earlier this year. While I enjoyed it at first - vacations were few and far between - it quickly started to suck. Keep your chin up and network like crazy... that's where the next position typically comes from, not the newpaper ad or randomly spamming companies, but from the people you know or the people they know or whom they reach out to on your behalf. That's where my new gig came from.

Best of luck!  icon_biggrin
