For instance, I'd expect my defensive end(if I was the owner of the team) to beat his blocks/hold his position then tackle the running back- if he was playing a run defense formation.  The 'tackle' could consist of grabbing the runner's foot and thereby tripping him up, for all I care.  As long as the runner is stopped.

In a pass defense, I'd expect the end to get past any blockers and either force the QB to get rid of the ball prematurely to avoid a sack, or actually sack the QB.  The 'sack' could consist of simply putting his arms around the QB so the QB is ruled to have been 'in the grasp' of the defense.
Roll Eyes

I'm not sure what sport you're watching. How do you suppose that the Defensive Linemen "get past any blockers"? Do you think they tap dance around with the Offensive Linemen? Do you really propose that the Defense doesn't try and tackle the QB and instead put their arms around him in a loving embrace until the Ref decides the QB has been embraced long enough? How do you think the Defensive End is holding his position against the OL and TE waiting for the Running Back? Should RB's no longer lower their shoulder and try to knock that LB over that is trying to tackle him? If a WR is doing a crossing pattern across the middle of the field do we wait until he is all set with the ball and heading up field before "tripping" him?

Lets face it, there is a certain level of violence associated with football. The NFL is trying to clean up some of the dirtier play, but football is inherently violent.

When people are being trained to kill I would say character is pretty damn important.

Here's an interesting article from the Rocky Mountain News.

Quote
Pacman Jones, the poster lout for noncharacter NFL players, is home again in Dallas, the same place that took in Tank Johnson. It took endless arrests and suspensions for the Bengals to finally get rid of Chris Henry, and Chad Johnson is unable to wear out his welcome in Cincinnati or, like Henry, make it to any minicamp.

How long did Bill Romanowski endure, and when was he no longer tolerated? Only after he could no longer play well enough to be forgiven.

A noble and handy alibi is character, useful when things go badly and unbearable when things go well. Doing it the right way rings with a smug superiority when it rings, and it almost never does.

Its always been an interesting conflict between expecting these guys to beat the crap out of each other on the field and then be perfect citizens off the field. It really doesn't surprise me when football players have anger issues and domestic violence arrests.

So does character really matter if the player continues to perform? This article makes the case that people like Travis "9 kids by 9 women" Henry would still be on the team if he was a 1500 yard Back. What the hell are the Cowboys doing picking up Pacman Jones unless they think he can perform on the field? Will anyone be surprised when he gets arrested again outside of some Night Club in Dallas?

I don't recall the government giving phone companies Billions in tax subsidies so that we all could get fiber to the house. If you want to complain about something try screaming about the USF garbage from the FCC making you subsidize every rural area's phone services.

Quote from: deadzone on June 03, 2008, 08:46:23 PM

You talk about Mothers Day and how it's so scary for the phone companies... It's that way because they refuse to do anything to upgrade their infrastructure other than provide constant stop-gap measures.  I hold in my hand the tiniest violin in the world and I play "My Heart Bleeds for You" for the phone companies.  BOO FREAKING HOO!  When you have a duopoly at best in the majority of the country this is what you get though.  It's no wonder the Telecos are bleeding telephone subscribers to Cable Co.'s VOIP offerings.  The majority of the Telecos are engaged in the short term profit-long term loss game.  Good luck I guess.
The reference to Mothers Day is to point out that Telco infrastructure just like the freeway can't be built for the busiest day of the year. You don't seem to want to acknowledge that the average internet user's habits have changed and the business case for the ISP's need to change with it. Ironically, the U.S. is at a disadvantage because we have over 100 years of history with our telecom infrastructure. Its not going to be a simple or cheap transition moving from TDM to IP.

My question is:  Why don't these guys man-up and do some meaningful fiber deployment instead of playing with all of these stupid stop-gap measures?  It all seems to be a rather transparent attempt to play upon a bandwidth apocalypse fear that they themselves seem to be perpetrating.

Who are "these guys"? Where do you propose your meaningful fiber deployment? There is already significant fiber deployed in the backbone infrastructure and in major metro rings. The only place missing fiber is the local loop to the house. New developments and modern apartment buildings/condos might have fiber, but most of the stand alone homes will be running on copper. LEC's and CLEC's can't be expected to dig trenches to everyone's home to deploy fiber so you can have unlimited bandwidth at $39.95. DSL was invented as a way to provide high bandwidth on traditional copper. Its also why cable was able to provide an alternative for bandwidth over their coax.

Did you know that Mother's Day is the single most profitable day for phone companies? Its also the scariest because the entire network's capacity is challenged to keep up with the demand for all of you to call your mommy. The networks are not built to handle that kind of traffic every day. Now with the Internet we have a situation that high bandwidth applications (e.g., MMO's, audio & video streaming, bit torrent, etc) are being more widely used. The previous model of offering unlimited access to the consumer worked because most everyone was browsing a few web pages and sending a few text e-mails so there was plenty of room for high bandwidth customers and still keeping the ISP's below their bursting usage thresholds with their upstream provider. That's no longer the case so we should expect a transition into having to pay for the bandwidth we use.

It would be a lot quieter if we could plant the kids in those Matrix bubbles until they grow up and then hatch them into adulthood. Say goodbye to the energy shortage.
