4721  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [City of Heroes] Skill system in the works on: October 14, 2004, 06:47:27 PM
The following comes from the December Issue of CGW and has been confirmed by Jack "Statesman" Emmert as being 100% accurate. He also indicated that the system has grown in complexity, which is why it will not be in the next Issue.

"Skills are City of Heroes' answer to the ubiquitous MMO crafting system - except they're totally different. Characters will be able to specialize in one of four different skill trees: Detective, Science, Communication, and Scholarship. They can further specialize in various areas of expertise, such as Forensics or Security for the Detective tree. Skills are level-independent and wholly optional; your character will be able to interact with myriad objects during the game, at which point he, (Ed. note: or she ), can attempt a series of skill checks. Success brings new objectives or perhaps some extra experiance. For example, succeeding at a Security check in a bomb infested building might reveal the explosives on the mission map.

Skills are learned and improved by studying at universities throughout Paragon City. You'll earn temporary, expendable skill boosts during missions; these are somewhat similar to inspirations but can also be converted into wisdom, which is used to add permanent skill boosts at the aformentioned universities. As with enhancements, you'll find generic skill improvements as well as stronger, more focused upgrades alon the lines of dual- and single- origin enhancements. The only skill you'll need now, though, is the patience to hold out for all this good stuff. "

My Characters name is Revenant Spawn....He is created and up to level 4 now...I should be on most evenings now.  It will be nice to have a group to play with again!

Cool! I look forward to seeing you. FYI, Morlac is playing a new scrapper. He was level 5 as of last night.

Participation has been climbing steadily over the last 2-3 weeks, which has been fantastic.

I've got several characters on virtue (all lower level though). I'm super-busy in real life so only get to play a few hours a week, but would love to meet up with any other golders online.

I'll update this post with a list of my toon's later tonight

Lower level is fine. The link in my sig leads to instructions for joining up with the Wanderers, if you'd like to do that. If you're going to be online infrequently, then you might want to head over there first. Then, you can let me know which character you'd like to use.

Of course, it's great to have people playing regularly, but I realize that some of you have lives beyond the game, unlike me smile

Have you guys seen that one of the latest things is OTC supplements that are sold and marketed like prescription drugs? They give them fancy names, make 'em a nifty color, put them in a cute pill case and sell them for a fortune, yet they aren't drugs at all.

We've had one for over three years now, and took advantage of the offer to upgrade to a series 2 machine without paying a new subscription fee.

The wife and I love our Tivo.

4728  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Pirates Limited Edition - Extra Content? (PC Version) on: October 13, 2004, 03:11:10 PM
The original game was incredibly elegant. While it was seemingly a "simple" game it incorporated quite a few features for its time, I think. It was very addictive. There was always another carrot to stretch for, even if it was really they same one you'd just worked so hard to get. Didn't matter. My wife and I both spent seemingly endless hours with this one.

I only hope they don't overcomplicate things too much. It was a very easy game to play and feel like you'd done well yet not easy to get a killer score at. I'd hate to see it become a game a beginenr couldn't pick up and play.

My wife and I both enjoy watching sports on tv with our kids (8 and 7). Football in particular (college and pro) and other things as well. My son also likes to watch Nascar races.

Some of the commercials my kids get exposed to watching sports are just awful. I remember when watching sports on a sunday afternoon was a relatively wholesome activity...now it seems like commercials for viagra and cialis are the least of the problems. Actually, the worst thing may be the fact that ESPN and FOX do so much advertising for their adult dramas during family viewing hours....over and over and over again.

It makes it tough to enjoy sports as a family.

Gwartok is taken care of, but I couldn't add you to my friends list as RevenantSpawn. Is that the right name? I'll be on again tomorrow evening.

Does anyone know if they've balanced things better since July?  Is the mission slider supposed to make the missions significantly more difficult?

Not yet, but they're working on it internally right now. They know the high-end game is too easy right now. They want to toughen it up to the point that there is something worthwhile for larger groups to do. The mission slider will also rock when you have a group with a bunch of SKs.

I'm having a great time with my controller HF...trying to claw my way toward 50. Been duoing with scrappers a lot, which is great fun.

I've had ...I think 2 lock-ups since issue 2...the only ones I have ever had. I have had more disconnect problems than any other point since Issue 1 came out, but nothing a reboot doesn't fix, generally (except for the occasional server-side issue).

Glad you're enjoying it, but after 3 and 4, no more of my money will be going to this series. I'd much rather be playing Richard burns or Xpand Rally, if only my poor machine could run them.

Not to derail my own thread, but how is Richard Burns Rally?

I can't run it on my rig, but I've heard excellent things about it.
4739  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / CoH...is it worth going back to? on: October 12, 2004, 08:12:00 PM
I agree with Don. They are fleshing the game out with things like instanced outdoor missions, new zones and villains, badges to find and earn, capes and auras, the ability to re-spec characters, etc. but it is still fundamentally the same game it was before.

I do think it has gotten better since release. For one thing, mission rewards were upped dramatically so that it isn't necessarily far more effective xp-wise to street sweep all day like it once was. Some of the character types are also better balanced than they were.

They still have work to do, notably in the area of making larger teams worthwhile and adjusting the difficulty of the game post-22.

Actually, yes, thanks to Ant_Man, mostly. He, Knighterrant, Docker, Blood Healer, Sacastica, High Commander, Commander Kean, West Star and some others that have slipped my mind have joined up with the Wanderers.

I believe we had 9 people online at one time last night, which isn't too bad.

More = better, so we'd welcome your company. What's your character's name?

They'd be better off doing 40k IMO.

I think this would almost be a harder setting to put a game in, but if done well it would really be amazing.  Given the xenophobia common among all the 40k races though it'd be hard to make peopple happy with it I think.

s

I'm not that familiar with the 40k universe, honestly. My comments stem more from the fact that it is far more distinct from the other games out there. You can call Warhammer dark fantasy, low fantasy, or whatever, but it is still fantasy. I LOVE fantasy, but that market is choked with titles. I think warhammer is different enough to put off many people that like fantasy, but not different enough to pull people that don't.

Moreover, they'll have to dramatically change some things, i think. The most dangerous opponents in the Warhammer Fantasy universe aren't monsters, much of the time, they are other people. This isn't a land replete with dragons and such that people are going to expect.

GG: Why is it heroes are limited to one server, I've wondered why we can't export and import our creations to another server and thereby fight in differing environs?

CoH: This is a feature which we'll be adding in the near future.

Nice.

- Don

That is nice. I know that folks that play on other servers have occasionally lamented they can't join us on virtue (and don't feel like starting over, for which I don't blame them). We could easily pick up a few more people when this happens, which would be fantastic.

Have they added any superpowers or skills since launch?  I remember the game fondly, but it just got old after a while.  I promised myself I'd return every now and then to check it out, though.

No, but one would presume that the new Kheldians will include some nifty new things. There have also been indications that they are working on shapeshifting...I have a feeling that this could have something to do with the new villain group and that if all goes well, we could eventually see shifting heroes.

Other power sets that are rumored to be in the works (no idea when we'll see them) include bows, plant control, magnetism, sonic powers and others.

There have also been persistent rumors of a winged AT, but I can't tell you if that is the Kheldians or something else.

They have added more temporary powers. Also, the badge system is new with issue 2, and you can get some abilities via accolades, but they are more "neat" than something that would bring you scurrying back on their own.

Ugh...would have been better left dead. They'd be better off doing 40k IMO.

I love the tabletop Warhammer RPG, but it is not suitable for an MMO, in my opinion. Too close to fantasy (will compete with EQ2, D&D, and WOW, etc) yet not different enough to lure a different audience. Not a large enough built in fanbase.

The Kheldians are coming, and you can play one of the alien energy beings starting in Issue 3. You'll have to get a character to level 50 first, though, so if you've been thinking of coming back, now is a great time to do it so you're ready when Issue 3 hits.

Also in issue 3: new chat system (apparently pushed back til then), mission slider, a new zone and a new villain group.

Read the rest of the interview right here

There's still plenty of space in the Wanderers Supergroup. Those interested in joining us on Virtue can follow the link in my sig.

I thik Sirius is on the move. Some folks have already mentioned a couple of things. The channels are also available for free to DishNetwork customers.

4752  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / NFL Week 5 on: October 09, 2004, 09:28:48 PM
I think the Titans are done. They have major salary cap problems that are going to impair their ability to fill in gaps during the season.

Take the Jags for instance, who just lost their best O-lineman for the rest of the year. They go out and get a veteran LT in Bob Whitfield. I'm not sure the Titans could have done that.

I'm hoping for Jags over Chargers, though I think it will be a tougher game than people around here give the Chargers credit for. Both teams are much improved over last year.
