4601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Score another for the DS! Now Firaxis!! Woo! on: July 25, 2005, 01:50:27 PM
I could see RTS games working really well on DS, since you could use the stylus to select units and designate destinations. The thing that would seemingly make it tricky would be screen size.

Another for I've really enjoyed Acid, though I still have a long way to go. I'm on the mission right before you find Teliko. Looking forward to MGA2
4603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any tips for avoiding and enduring motion sickness in games? on: July 19, 2005, 11:32:06 PM
I've never heard of eyestrain being linked to motion sickness. Flicker gives me headaches, to be sure, but doesn't make me nauseous. Glad I don't have that issue. I can see flicker at 85Hz, but it's not bad...anything less is really a royal pain. 100 is beautiful. (Please don't try telling me human beings aren't capable of this...I also hear sounds well above normal human range...I'm a mutant).

With my LCD if I focus on it I can see *something* kind of like flicker but not exactlly....sort of a vague sideways movement of something inside the screen, but it dooesn't bug me.

Yeah, the motion shots are jaggy, but that's to be expected IMO. I wouldn't judge it too harshly until we see some video.

Yup, it's coming, just a bit later as others have said.
4606  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Wipeout Pure - Gamma Pack 3 released... on: July 14, 2005, 01:01:48 PM
The new ship has the same shield, handling, and thrust as one of the old ones, but with better speed (3 vs 2). I tried it briefly on the new track and liked it. I had been using the one from GP2, which is great, but found I was using the air brakes a lot to negotiate turns, which slows you down.

This is the last in the Gamma series. A pack containing classic tracks is expected on the first of August (info at IGN

I haven't unlocked any of the classic tracks yet, myself.

Great game. Just stop playing once you get to the wastelands. Yell "Game Over" and congratulate yourself on a job well done...spare yourself the last part.
4609  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Need help with PSP memory stick error on: June 25, 2005, 04:51:41 PM
I'm trying to download Gamma Pack 2 for Wipeout, and I am getting an error number 80110385 part way through the download. It says "unable to access memory stick". I'm connecting via wifi and have tried with the power save off and on.

Do memory sticks have bad "sectors" (or whatever the mem stick analogue is?
Should I try to format the card?
4610  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Wipeout Pure Gamma Pack 2 released on: June 24, 2005, 11:55:26 AM
I ought to download these. I haven't played Wipeout in weeks though. It was such a struggle trying to win even the early races that it kind of put me off of it.
4611  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FATE Released. (Think Diablo 1 + Nethack. But pretty.) on: June 23, 2005, 03:56:56 AM
That's odd, mine worked perfectly.
After starting my initial character on the easiest setting, I've been playing a bow-gal on the regular difficulty. I'm about level 13 on dungeon level 24 or so. Some of the boss fights are really kicking my butt. I did upgrade my pets from frost beetles to Wyverns, and got a couple of armor pieces with better defensive ratings. The latter seems to have helped a lot.

Any new games on the PSP sounds cool!

As for Hot Shots, I am one frickin star from unlocking the 4th course... last night, coming up to the last hole I'm leading the tourney at -1, with the closest competitor at +2 so I think... yeah, this is happening! But then I get to the last hole.. it's got the green up on a plateau, with rocks and a drop into the ocean short of it, and a big sand trap behind. I hit the ball short not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES into the water... I get a "give up" on the hole and finish the tourney at +7... in last place. Aieeeeeeeeeeeee!

Great game though!

Edit to add: I've gotten one hole-in-one, and of course, it was a masterful shot! smile Love the save function so you can re-live your past glory!

Yeah...I started off a tourney with 2 birdies the other day, then proceeded to hit two triple bogeys and a +4 (because of OOB shots just like you). The funny thing was when I wasnt hitting the ball OOB  made some splendid shots.
4613  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Star Wars Battlefront II on the PSP on: June 21, 2005, 12:00:15 PM
Yeah, Hot Shots is fun.
How far have you gotten? I unlocked the third course the other day and it is brutal.

I don't know...seems like some good stuff on the way to me: Colin McRae, GT4, Burnout Legends, Midnight Club (plenty of racing stuff). Gripshift, Frantix...There's also tons of stuff that looks good, but just isn't my thing (GTA, Daxter, Death Jr., Pursuit Force, Infected, etc)

Battlefront sounds interesting, though I haven't seen the fiirst.

Been meaning to suggest this...

Hey Travis, can we get a button that switches the camera to the same position as on the continue playing screen so we can see how we look in any environment? I often save and exit just to see a new piece of equipment.

Send your pet to town if you'll sell everything it has and come back.

Limited unocking codes...why is this such a big deal to people?
4619  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / My problems with COH on: June 16, 2005, 12:24:42 PM
Raven, I think you make a valid point in regard to "saving the best", but the truth of the matter is that I (and many others) think the combat in the game is extraordinarily fun right out of the gate.

You get the core game from the start. The rest is just window dressing, with a few notable exceptions (e.g. travel powers).

If you don't like the opening levels, you aren't going to like the later stuff. Even if they had the kind of stuff you are referring to, I have the strong feeling you'd be quitting for other reasons, because this simply isn't the right game for you.

See, I thought fighting robots, zombies, and notzis from level 1 was pretty darned cool.
4620  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / My problems with COH on: June 15, 2005, 11:56:17 PM
I didn't have time to write a real response this morning, but I can elaborate now.

I have no issue whatsoever with you not liking CoH. It clearly isn't for everyone. I'm not at all certain any game is. However, I take issue when someone blindly proclaims that it "sucks".

Let's take a look at your list of issues:

1. the game has grind

ok. My understanding is that compared to the majority of other MMO games (WoW may be an exception here, but I can only personally speak with reference to Anarchy Online) that the grind in CoH is rather modest. Frankly, it is virtually nonexistent in the levels you have experience with (though there can be a blip around 11-12 with some builds). Seriously, if you thought THAT was a grind try the 40s. I have the strong suspicion you played solo all the time or most of it, or had some bad pickup teams.

2. the zones are boring - they all look cookie cutter

This is a reasonable statement...sort of. Hollows is fairly interesting actually. The early zones are dull as dishwater, but you've hardly scratched the surface of what the game has to offer, and have had zero opportunity to see the coolest zones in the game. I think it is unfortunate that all the early zones are so bland, but who cares...they only exist to get to your next mission anyway for the most part.

3. the missions are boring - they all look cookie cutter

I really have to disagree here. I think the missions are quite diverse in appearance, and the art team is adding more all of the time. Now a year ago, I think you'd have had a much better complaint. SInce then have have added custom art to many individual missions, quite a few of which I have yet to see. Furthermore, I still, after over a year of play, I still occasionally stumble across set pieces I swear I''ve never seen.

Heck, to me the bigger issue is that while some of the missions have neat stories they all basically amount to click this or defeat that. That's a much more valid complaint, IMO. I believe this is getting some attention when CoV arrives or shortly thereafter.

4. not easy to re-spec

I'm just not getting this one at all. For goodness sakes you can get to level 6 in a couple of hours. You only made it to 14. What in the world is so borked about your hero you need a respec already? Besides, the respec trial is extremely well done.
5. death penalty

What about it? Have you played in an MMO without one? I have, and let me tell you something, it sucks pondwater. I like the debt system in CoH. It provides incentive not to be stupid without punishing you. No lost items, no lost levels, no corpse runs. no rez sickness (well, a few seconds depending on method). It is extremely mild.

A few nights ago, I had the toughest night of my career. 5 or 6 defeats in one night. I worked every last bit of it off in a couple of hours.

now, on to other matters....

The game is supposed to take place in a real, modern city.
While some of your ideas sound like fun (and I think the dev team is looking to branch out more now that the ciity itself is well defined) they also sound straight out of some wacky platform game and would little place in the game at this point.

You haven't seen it most likely, but in Peregrine island there's a stargate...I mean fargate...oh whatever, that you can go through and visit other dimensions. So far (with one exception) they've all been really boring to be honest, but thhere's certainly room to expand into some stuff of that nature and I hope they do, after CoV is up and running.

I'm reminded of a person who was in our supergroup briefly. He asked in group chat when the game got interesting. Lokiju responded "At character creation" or something to that effect. And for many of us, that is perfectly true and it hasn't disappointed us since.

Incidentally, I should say I'm not a comic book junkie. I don't read them, don't know that much about them. Still, I like the idea of having cool powers, and love the wildly chaotic combat of CoH. I became interested in the game shortly after it launched and have played steadily ever since. It did away with most of the things that kept me away from MMO games for years: no camping, no uber loot, no PKing, no moronic guilds controlling entire zones.

Heck, maybe you want to kill other players while they wait a week in line to play whack-a-boss. I got no problem with that, That game isn't for me and this one isn't for you.
4621  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / My problems with COH on: June 15, 2005, 12:06:30 PM
You not liking it doesn't translate to "suck".
4622  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS Screen Protectors on: June 11, 2005, 01:57:26 PM
I have a Hori protector for my PSP..not sure if this is an indicator of their quality overall, but mine is very nice and inexpensive. Most importantly, it is crystal clear, unlike the others I tried (such as Pelican).

Again, this may or may not be relevant, but my only complaint about it is that it doesn't seem to fit the screen just overlaps a bit and air bubbles form around the outside of the screen area. This doesn't affect gameplay, but has to shorten the life of the screen/allow crud underneath over time.
4623  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / A few more COH questions. on: June 07, 2005, 12:26:30 AM
Do yourself a favor. Quit playing now. Seriously.

If you think the early levels are a "grind" then this is not a game you're going to enjoy.

Next question. Is it possible for a level 9 Blaster to solo anywhere?

Yes, in those missions you said you don't want to do. Why? Because you will have groups of controlled size at the correct level and won't waste time looking for stuff to fight, plus you'll get the mission bonuses.

Also, 6-slot hover is not such a terrible idea. It won't ever be very fast, but more people are going this route because of PvP I think.

If you teamed a lot and got credit for every one else's missions, you could run out of missions to do in a a hurry.

4628  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is the PSP really worth $250? on: June 04, 2005, 07:43:41 PM
I love mine, but then, it's the only console I have. Took the kids to their tutoring class this morning and sat in the car playing Hot Shots...the first time I've actually used it away from home.

I guess it depends on what you want out of it. Hardware-wise, I think it's hard to argue with. The screen is just amazing.

You get to choose one power. They aren't for sale and there's no issue of affording it or not. You get one and only one at a time. You clicked on one power, then the other, then hit continue, so you got the latter.
4631  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / CoH: Trying to Pull Me Back in.... on: June 02, 2005, 11:53:56 PM
The TF's are one of the absolute worst ways to experience CoH, IMO.
The Striga Hess TF is a notable exception, as are several of the trials (which I don't really think of as task forces i the same sense anyway).
4632  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / I think COH blows (maybe) on: June 02, 2005, 11:49:00 PM
You can use the mouse only to move, but most don't because it was just implemented. The option is in options>controls>Forward(mouse control). You have to set a key to the option then turn it on I think.

I take that back...I just tried it and it worked fine.
I'd never want that, personally.

On your tee shot push down on the dpad and you will throw grass into the air and it will blow in the direction and force of the wind.  This acutally makes more sense than giving you just a number.

Seriously?! I had no idea! Thanks for the tip.

Oh...Don...on the camera reset, it isn't a problem, until you forget the camera has moved and double tap the X on a critical putt, then instead of not touching the button again, frantically hit it once more. Not that I've done that. Nope. Not me. Uh uh. Noooo way.

Yeah, I've only unlocked one new golfer, but I think I'm doing better with Rio. haven't had a chance to play in several days.

Wonderful game. Simply wonderful.

It is, though I do have some complaints that mar an otherwise fantastic game.

1) It seems the game has no interface for dealing with multiple save files.  This strikes me as completely absurd.

2) There are a number of times where I can't see the little pyramidal icon that shows where you are aiming because it is behind an embankment. It would have been great if it had showed a triangle outline or something similar in cases like that.

3) Why in the heck can't we tell how hard the wind is blowing until after we've made the tee shot? This can be really, really frustrating.

4) I sure do wish the button to reset the camera had been something other than X.

5) This is minor, but it sure would be nice to get clubs/irons that actually help rather than hurt. Most of the stuff I've found so far reduces control or impact, which hinders my game rather than helps.

In the scheme of things, none of these is traumatic...I'd still rate HSG as good as Lumines/MGA (i.e 9ish) and it certainly has an addictive quality (just one more 9 hole tournament...)

When do we get more caddy choices?

Stoked about MGA2.
I like puzzle games, so Frantix looks really good. Gripshift looks good in a Trackmania vibe. Burnout Legends sounds like it'll be good.

There are some games that look cool that I'm not liable to get...stuff like Pursuit Force, Ghost in the Shell, Harry Potter, Infected.

I was really hoping there'd be some big "OMGWTFBBQ" type announcements at the show, but there really wasn't anything like that, with perhaps the closest thing to that being the announcement of a Lemmings game (not a big interest for me, really).
