americans have it so bad???

Bah! At least you're getting a color other than white!

I haven't used it (the browser) personally but the Nintendo Rep here had really good things to say about it. Yeah, I know how that sounds, but she knows her stuff and isn't one to just blow smoke.

I have a copy of AoE available for trade, if anyone is interested.  smile

Also, Rob, give Partners in Time a try. Once you get past the lengthy story set-up, it grows increasingly addictive as you gain more skills, items, and abilities. I really, really liked it.

I really don't grok what this game is like. It looks like a platformer, but people describe it as an rpg, talk about items, etc.
4283  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wasn't the DS Lite supposed to come with a web browser? on: June 16, 2006, 01:26:14 PM
It's based on Opera and was demonstrated at E3. It is in the form of a DS cart (I had thought it was going to be GBA shaped, but not so, apparently). No idea what the release date is going to be, but my guess is this fall.

I don't recall seeing any reference to this being "built-in".

Really tempting to say "Moonbase Commander"
Other thoughts include Rollcage Stage 2, Divine Divinity, and Pro Pinball

unrelated..but do you know how much they would take for a old ps2 (one of the bigger ones)..cause I've been thinking of seeing how much i could get to put it towards a new ps2 (the thin one)

Should be $45 + the 20, depending on condition/completeness of course.

How much does an Xbox trade-in go for?  I have one laying around in a box (w/ power cords but no controllers), it's tempting to put that towards a DS.

This week only it is 70 dollars Trade in Credit or 80 if you trade it in for a 360. However, that includes power cords, video cords and one controller. You'll have to buy a used controller from them if you can't find one, which would knock 15 or 20 off. Still, beats a doorstop.

I'm still deciding if I want one.  EB/Gamestop is offereing $70 for an original DS trade-in this week, which brings the price of a DS Lite preorder down to $60.  Tempting, but I don't know if the better screens and buttons are worth it.

I haven't been able to find any offical information regarding the EB/Gamestop trade in deal. Does this only pertain to certain stores, or is it nationwide in the US? Is there any information on their website?

The deal isn't specific to DS...it is an extra 20 bucks for trading in a DS, GC, PSP, PS2, XBox, or 360. It is in the June 4th Newspaper insert and the offers run through 6/11. No coupon is required. As far as I know, it is nationwide.

What do you have to include to get $70 for a DS?  The system, a stylus, and power cord, I assume, but anything else?  And would it change anything if I found the original box?

Nope and Nope.

Fossils, tell him it's in the June 4th FSI. It will still show in the system as $50 but the other 20 gets tacked on. AFAIK it's for all Gamestop and EB stores but I guess I could be wrong about that.

Note this time there are no coupons required for these offers.

It's $70 for the DS by itself. You can apply it toward whatever you want, but the smart money is using it to upgrade to the Lite.

Actually, its $70 if you put it towards a DS Lite. Otherwise its just the regular $50 value for your DS.

Folks, the original poster is correct. Through the 11th, there's an extra 20 bucks trade incentive ay Gamestop/EB on 360, Xbox, PS2, DS, GC, and PSP. It has nothing to do with what you choose to purchase.

Also, FYI, Gamestop has finally begun giving discounts to customers with EB cards and vice-versa.
4294  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Countdown to DS Lite: DEAD PIXEL? AUGH! PG 3 on: June 05, 2006, 11:38:14 AM
I want to upgrade to a Lite and if they'd brought Navy or Black to the US I'd have done so on day one...but not white. No thanks. I'll happily while away the hours waiting for another color on my blue DS.

I want it so badly, but can never find it used in my local stores and am not paying the premium on eBay.

DJ, do what I did and go here

Put in a zipcode and specify a radius of 20 miles (or whatever you want). You can find it at Gamestop or EB by doing this. Once you locate one, call the store and make sure they have it, and that they have the book (if you want it, but it isn't pivotal here). Then have them hold it for you.

Not trying to be a company shill here, but if you don't want to use ebay, give this a shot.
4296  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phoenix Wright: Adventure games rise from the ashes on DS on: June 03, 2006, 03:48:11 PM
I originally put this in another thread then realized thta was in the E3 folder and no one was ging to be looking over there much anymore, so please excuse the double post.

I just managed to find a copy of Phoenix Wright today and have just finished the second case. I'm glad to have something to distract me from the fact that within hours both my 360 and my PC have taken a nosedive (PC appears to be a bad power supply).

Anyway, for those that haven't tried it, this is a rather fresh approach to the adventure game genre. Yes, it's a classic adventure game set in the context of a series of legal trials. You have to collect evidence and present it at the right moment to advance the story. One of the great things about it is that there's no time spent going from place to place. A couple of button presses and you're where you need to go. You can use the touchscreen or buttons to question witnesses, examine areas for clues, etc. but I found myself using the stylus after a while.

The first case was rather short and served as a tutorial, but the second had several "chapters" and a variety of twists and turns. The presentation is well done, with anime-influenced graphics. There are nice musical cues that give you feedback as to how you are doing. One thing that takes a bit of getting used to is that the image on screen will shake (or even flash sometimes) or there will be audible cues accompanying text to help convey emotion (since there is almost zero voice work).

The only gripe I have so far (and this is minor) is a classic adventure game issue of wanting to use an item too soon. I jumped the gun on the final twist in the second case and wanted to use a piece of evidence before the game was ready, but had to let things run their course a little.

While I think the game is fairly on rails, it somehow manages to make me feel like I'm making choices that are meaningful. Thus the game feels like more than simply an interactive movie. I think I've missed some little things that would have played out differently had I made different choices, even though the final outcome might not have changed dramatically. Also, the characters have a tremendous amount of ...well...character.

At any rate, I found this for 20 bucks (used) and have already spent perhaps 3 hours on it with 3 cases left to go (again, the very first one doesn't really count). I hope the remaining cases are just as entertaining as the second.

This isn't an easy game to find (I've been waiting for it to show up in my store for months) but since I had a day off today, I did a locator search at gamestop.com and tracked down a copy at another store. I used to love the adventure genre but it has been a very long time since I had this much fun with one.

Perhaps the best news is that this is an established series in Japan, with the fourth game on the way. We are getting another game in the series here in the US (Phoenix Wright: Justice for All) but I'm not certain which of the Japanese games it corresponds to. At any rate, give me more of this over Grim Fandango or Longest Journey any day of the week.

If you've got a DS, and you have a fondness for adventure games (or maybe used to but haven't played a good one in years) go find a copy of this and give it a go. The first game was a sleeper hit, which is bringing the second to US shores, but if the second does really well, we're sure to see more localizations.

Yeah, and it wasn't like I was belligerent or anything. I was polite and forthcoming about the fact I knew it was out of warranty. This wasn't a case of having to fight for it.

Now you can interpret that as them wanting to do right by their customers or them knowing there's a problem or perhaps some of both.
4300  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / She's gonna blow! (360 woes) on: June 02, 2006, 07:47:07 PM
Well, at the urging of a couple of folks, I called MS even though I've had the system since November and it is well beyond the warranty period. They are going to cover it anyway and I should have a box next week to send it in.

Sounds like the usual overheating problems the console is so well known for. Just try moving your power supply away from your 360, and make sure you have a decent surge protector hooked up to it all.

Plugged into an UPS and the power supply is several feet away and turned across a box.

How can it overheat within a couple of minutes?
4302  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / She's gonna blow! (360 woes) on: June 02, 2006, 03:34:46 AM
Well, looks like I may be about to join the ranks of owners of $400 doorstops. The 360 locked up on me 3 times within a few minutes, and the machine had only been on a couple of minutes the first time. No red lights, but each time it locked up and there were graphic artefacts on the screen. I turned the power off each time to try and prevent further damage.

Anybody experienced anything like this with theirs?

wow that's tough....but I'll go with:

Battles of Prince of Persia for strategy
Castlevania for action
Meteos for puzzle

As much as I like Meteos, I'm hoping Magnetica supplants it next week.

Ive gotten online wiith my DS using an Apple Airport base station (so, no, you don't have to have any special Nintendo gear). I set it up like any other wifi device.

According to our nintendo rep, there are about 100 new titles due out by the end of the year.

If you're into puzzle games, I'm convinced Magnetica is going to rock. I'm really looking forward to the US sequel to Ouendan called Elite beat Agents. Square's 3 on 3 mario basketball looks like it'll be awesome. Then there's the upcoming Opera web browser (maybe they should Mario-theme it and call it a web Bowser) which was demonstrated at E3 (it's a DS cart, not a GBA-sized one as I had thought...not sure on timing). There's also another Castlevania game (Portrait of Ruin) in the works (I'm having a blast with Dawn of Sorrow currently). There's also another Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney in the works and a really cool looking thriller called Hotel Dusk Room 215.

Some of this stuff is probably next year, but there's a lot that Im excited about.

It is permissible to borrow an opened (for display) new copy. I don't think I've ever done that, personally. Checking out used games is preferred where possible.

If you'd like to discuss this further, let's please do so in another thread.

So I borrowed a copy of Castlevania DS from the store and plan to buy it today. I'm having a lot of fun with this one. While I found things to be rough going initially, it was a question of getting a weapon upgrade or two.

*possible minor spoilers below*

I can now take out the little ice crystal blocks and just gained the ability to use a second equipment configuration.

You can kind of make your own difficulty setting by how much you repeat things. Because of the wacky insta-respawn you can level up very easily with certain creatures (notably "The Creature" in the early going) or get a particular soul you need. Likewise, money is very easy to come by (brass knuckles + zombie + one of the early armor souls sells for about 8500 )
