I will not be fooled into thinking that I can let the special effects make up for the crap that is a Roland Emmerich movie.  This nonsense of letting go and leaving your brain at the door is the reason Hollywood keeps turning out crap.  Yes, I'm better than you!!! icon_evil

When he fought Mir he had control but got stood up for punching Mir in the back of the head.  Lesnar was too inexperienced to prevent Mir from utilizing his Jiu Jitzu.

Which was a bullshit call. All his blows were legal. He was pounding Mir into dust until that happened.

Agreed.  It was an incidental blow that only hit the back of Mir's head because Mir spun around during the barrage.

Rashad dances a bit much for my tastes, but he seems like a good guy.  He hasn't lost either, so he's got that going for him.
485  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Couture vs Lesner on: November 14, 2008, 07:37:03 PM
As excited as I am to see the Couture/Lesnar fight, I think the UFC loses some of its credibility when it allows a 2-1 fighter to fight for the heavyweight championship.  That's just silly.  Do titles really mean anything to the UFC???  The guy hasn't proven himself one bit.  He beat Heath Herring, but Herring, even though he's a somewhat big name, is not a well-rounded fighter.  Lesnar is a very good wrestler, and I'm not talking about fake wrestling, but it takes more than that to consistently win in the UFC.  When he fought Mir he had control but got stood up for punching Mir in the back of the head.  Lesnar was too inexperienced to prevent Mir from utilizing his Jiu Jitzu.

I think Randy might keep this one off the ground.  Lesnar's size might negate Couture's wrestling experience, but Randy has proven that he can stand up with some of the best.  Remember Couture/Liddell 1?

Rashad is a very gifted fighter and I think he'll beat Griffin.  Rashad's early knock was that he couldn't finish a fight to save his life, but he's really worked on that and should have a belt soon.

You're a better man than I if you can finish the series.  The first one is a classic, the second one is okay, but then they get terrible.

Usually hits like that to the eye don't drop somebody. Limbo seemed to go limp as though he got him on the chin. Very surprising that it dropped him. But when you try to put the ref in guard then it was definitely a good stoppage.

Where was it said that Anakin was a virgin birth?  I don't remember that.

Everything Palpatine said to Anakin seemed like a load of crap designed to string him along, so I never put much faith in it.

I thought the midichlorian concept, while a bad idea to begin with, got a little cooler in Episode 3 when Palpatine insinuated that he had bio-engineered Anakin through manipulation of midichlorians. So while Anakin may have been technically born to a virgin mother, his father was actually Palpatine in a way, and he could only do it thanks to the existence of midichlorians.

It's not enough to save the concept, but it made it moderately salvageable in my mind.
It wasn't Palpatine that bio-engineered Anakin, but Palpatine's master... uh, see if I can remember, Darth Plagus?

Here's what the Emperor says at that opera thing:
You ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagus the Wise? ... Darth Plagus was a dark lord of the sith so powerful and so wise he could use the force to influence the midichlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the darkside he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.

Hmm, though I guess he goes on to say:
He became so powerful the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually of course he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic, he could save others from death, but not himself.

So I guess that would certainly imply that the Emperor had power to create life.

But how does that mean Anakin was bioengineered?  I'm not making the connection.

493  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: A few nerdy Star Wars questions on: August 28, 2008, 03:26:13 PM
I remember Yoda telling Obi Wan about the new life after death technique, but it seemed that Obi Wan skipped the whole death part.  He just vanished. I don't think they did that just to avoid the gore, because Vaded pokes at the robe because he doesn't know what just happened. Obi Wan's warning that he was going to become more powerful than Vader could possibly imagine was a bit exaggerated too.

As for Vader fighting just to keep Luke from going to the dark side, I don't think there's a chance Vader and the Emperor weren't in agreement as to how this was going to go down. The Emperor would goad Luke into attacking him and Vader would stop him and the battle for second in command would be on. I just don't know why Vader wouldn't just let Lukes saber strike the Emperor.  Even Sith have a sense of self preservation. Make that "especially Sith."
494  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / A few nerdy Star Wars questions on: August 28, 2008, 02:42:00 PM
These might have been answered in some extra material I haven't seen, but they've always bugged me:

1. Why did Obi Wan disappear when Vader struck him down?

2. Why is Vader cool with the Emperor trying to replace him win Luke? I know he asked Luke to rule with him, which I assume meant overthrowing the Emperor, but he seems to be cool with his master making him fight his son just to see who will live

3. Anakin is supposed to bring balance to the force, but what possible meaning could that have other than balancing out the good/bad force ratio?  If it was heavily weighted in favor of the good guys, why would the one to bring balance be welcome?
495  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Kimbo Slice back on CBS, Oct 4. His Opponent? on: August 27, 2008, 01:16:57 PM
No matter who wins, this one is going to end early.  Kimbo is either going to land a barrage from which Ken can't recover or Ken will get him to the ground and break his ankle.  Kimbo has never (I don't believe) faced anybody with decent ground skills. Ken has a real chance to take Kimbo out of his element and show him what's in store if he ever gets to fight real MMA fghters.  Of course I wouldn't be surprised if Ken, knowing this is his last hurrah, listens to the Elite promoters and tries to make this a standup match.

Everybody knows that their precious baby, Kimbo, is a sideshow attraction and would get destroyed by a real fighter.

lmao no it is not. I bet you kill more bugs per year than the fatalities that occur on that tv show.
You really don't see the difference?  I'll kill a bug that's in my house (important distinction), but that doesn't mean that every day I hope to find a bug there just so I can take joy in watching it die.

I'm not equating Bug Fights to dog fighting.  No, I don't really care that these bugs are dying.  What bothers me is the mentality of someone who stages these fights.  That's a little disturbing.

Thunderbird was good when I used it, but it let in a lot of spam.  I switched to Gmail about a year ago and never looked back.  To this day I've received one spam through Gmail and I don't believe a single good message was flagged as spam.  I don't know how they do it, but they're leagues ahead of Thunderbird and Outlook at tagging spam.

Well, I don't think it condones pedophilia to point out that the t-shirt is in questionable taste.

Agreed, but the line should have read "A man wearing a 'World's greatest dad' shirt is accused. . ."  Biyobi was pointing that out, not that the shirt wasn't funny considering the circumstances.

Irony makes this story interesting. I don't see anywhere that a different t-shirt makes the crime ok.

The point was the perp wasn't accused of wearing the shirt, as was written in the story.

I'm going to get one, I just don't know when.  I'm moving to Texas Saturday and will have to give up my work phone, so I'll need to buy an iPhone before then.  The local store has the 16GB, but not the 8GB.  I seriously doubt I'll need that extra 8GB, but damn if it isn't tempting.

My favorite shotgun, and one that my entire family (and my wife's side) uses routinely for protection, hunting, target shooting, etc....

Is a 12 gauge Belgium made Browning A-5.    The beauty of this firearm is second to none...and the recoil operation is satisfying and like engineering art.      At 100 steps, the pattern is amazingly tight.

Still readily had at gun shows.    Every hunting club we've joined the younger crowd has turned their nose up at this firearm thinking their new Benelli shotguns would shoot circles around them.      Every single time they have been stunned when the Browning shoots circles around their Winchesters and expensive new Benellis.

My family has one.  It is indeed a great gun.

I can't see any kind of detail in those shots because they're too dark.
517  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Mutant Chronicles on: July 02, 2008, 06:21:17 PM
Shooting everything in the dark is a pet peeve of mine.  Mostly it's done at night to create "atmosphere" (see most horror movies), but sometimes it's done because that's the director's style (see David Fincher).  This movie makes even the daylight scenes very dark so that you can't make out much detail at all.  The shot probably was illuminated, but during postproduction it appears they darkened everything up significantly.
518  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Mutant Chronicles on: July 02, 2008, 06:12:33 PM
Do they not want us to be able to see anything?  Why was everything shot in such complete darkness?  I couldn't even make out a most of the faces.
