The fact is most of the 'food science' that is generally accepted by the public is ludicrously wrong.

I have heard the same thing from my more health conscience friends. But this being the Internet, give me links to what is correct please. Not because I doubt you, just want to know more.

I started a really long response upstairs, but will just make a very short post right now due to time constraints (about to go on a trip for work). Tomorrow, if the team gets done early I will post more from the hotel.

Imagine a new food pyramid.

Bottom layer = water.
Next layer = meat + eggs
Next layer = vegetables (excluding potatoes)
Next layer = fruits
Top layer = nuts (peanuts and cashews are not nuts!).

The top layer should be very small, and eaten last at any meal.

At each meal, have some of each, in proportion to the pyramid. It is practically impossible to be overweight doing this. But you can't have bread, pasta, rice, soda, twinkies, cake, brownies, ice cream. And yes, there is no dairy in the pyramid. That is not a mistake.

Tomorrow I'll follow up and explain why, and provide what links I can. But for now, processed carbohydrates is the devil. Dairy is a lesser demon. Go forth and enjoy biggrin

To steal a bit:
I reject that pyramid and substitute my own!

Nice, like good book recommendations.
I'm not a fiction reader, really. I RARELY read fiction, as I just never want the book to end... It's too painful to read a fantastic book, for me.
However, 1 from each category in my favs of all time:
Nonfiction: Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People. (it's so amazingly hilarious/funny/scary, it seems fiction, but it's not - the guy can spin a web of stories together so well)
Fiction: 1984 - the ONLY fiction book I've read more than 1 time. I just love how it ends... But the journey to get there is fantastic and scary.

This is pretty exciting news. I heard about Les' new show during commercial for Dual Survival (which is amazingly good) on Friday. Knowing how Les does things, I think this could be a very cool show. I love me some 'survival' Friday programming. Man, Woman, Wild has been a different take on the topic and is pretty entertaining - but Dual Survival is on the level of Survivor Man good for sure. I'm glad survival Friday isn't dead now that Dual Survival is 'done' for the season.

I have 2 minor complaints, though. I've been using Windows since the beginning - Win 7 ranks up there with ME for LEAST favorite operating systems. It just seems clunky.
Also, I'm not all that pleased with the processor - although that could be a function of the operating system - just doing stupid things definitly the performance is way down versus my dual core chip running Vista.
I shouldn't complain though, I am one lucky S O B. Sun's gotta shine on a dog's arse now and again I figure.

Those complaints seem to make no sense compared to the majority of people with the same things.

I should clarify. I'm splitting hairs. Once something gets going - it smokes, although, some games I'm experiencing 'chokes' on occasion - and it's not accessing the ROM drive or doing anything special - and it's not occuring in points where you'd expect it. It could be compatibility with the OS with the games. Also, just opening simple programs and tabbing around is a bit slower than prior. We're talking a second here, 5 seconds there. Again, minor complaint.
92  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Yeehaa! New gaming laptop! Whats your rig? on: August 17, 2010, 03:04:33 PM
Damn, nice gaming rig. I've been laptop gaming for over 3 years now. Back then, I put together a gateway spread since they had the best value on a laptop with a proper video card and 3 year warrenty that covered EVERYTHING on the cheap. Well... After year 1, the DVD drive crapped out. After doing some reading on the web, that particular model had a working life of less than that. I didn't send it in for repairs, stupidly. Then something else went out on the system. Then something else. So about 2 years into my warrenty, I sent it in to be fixed. They fixed 1/2 of what was on the list. So I sent it in again 6 months later. Great, everything fixed, total downtime without a laptop 2-3 weeks each time. THEN my motherboard fried with about 1 week to go in my warrenty - so I sent it in again - extending my warrenty another 90 days. A week before THAT warrenty is up, the system just completely fries out. After jostling with Gateway for a bit, they agree'd to have it fixed with me only paying for shipping (they farm out their repairs to Acer). 3 weeks pass, no laptop - and I get a call from Acer. I'm scared out of my mind, thinking it's going to cost me money or something. So I call them back - and it turns out that the majority of the parts required are no longer available. At this point, I'm in shock. I had a feeling this could happen...

Then the woman on the other end of the line said: "So, we're just going to send you a brand new laptop, is that ok?"
She rips off the specs:

Acer Aspire 7745G
Intel Core i7 processor 1.6ghz, 6mb L3 cache
ATI Radeon HD 5650 1 gig
17.3 HD+ LED LCD
8GB Memory
500 GB HDD
Blu-ray Disc drive
blah blah blah
Windows 7

I give a dramatic pause and just about pass out!
I couldn't believe it, they sent me the laptop and the thing is 2-10 times as good in every aspect of the hardware compared to what i had!
Wow, I can't believe how lucky I got! Glad I spent as much as I did on warrenties - I got a brand spankin new system!
The thing is great, it runs EXTREMELY cool (shocking, my Gateway could fry eggs), and is quiet as can be.
I have 2 minor complaints, though. I've been using Windows since the beginning - Win 7 ranks up there with ME for LEAST favorite operating systems. It just seems clunky.

Ugh, Green Bay will be lucky to get to 9 wins, let alone 10 this year. You can't expect Rodgers to continue carrying the team on his back without a RB worth a damn or a defense that couldn't stop a team of high schoolers. I'm still excited though to frequent the local vegas "Packer" bars, though, for game days. They are so awesome.

I got a real nice set of chips+case for 50 bucks off of ebay years ago. It's a lower end set (I don't know what the chips are made of, but they're close enough to the real thing) but has been fantastic. It's really not hard to find a good deal for that sort of thing on ebay. If you go to a specialty shop, yeah, you can get some really nice clay chips, but you also have to pay a hefty premium. I'd definitly shop around a bit - but ebay is your best bet IMO for value.

Pretty cool episode last night on 'dissing old people' is bullshit. That's so awesome they got Maddox on to be the whipping boy. That guy rules.
I'm really glad they did do an ep on the topic, though. It's something that offends me greatly. At least when my grandparents (and great grandparents) were alive, my parents always treated them like toddlers and douchebags. Now that my folks are up there in years, they still want 'respect'. They shouldn't call it the baby boomer generation - they should call it the 'fuck you I'm awesome' generation. Luckily, I believe I've learned from their mistakes on this topic, to their benefit.

The episode about cheerleaders was messed up. Scary crap - especially with the type of medical care available to cheerleaders if it were titled as a 'sport'. With those kind of injuries potentially, seems a no brainer.

I'm looking forward to the 'self esteem' episode. I can't even imagine where they go with that. Paul Mooney had a good joke about how Oprah was to blame for making people have 'self esteem'. Good stuff.

How much does it cost? I'm looking at the game and it looks f'n incredibly fun. I did some simple click-thrus - but it doesn't really relay the cost. 10 quid was the closest I could see, but I'm not paying in anything but American dollars. It looks incredibly fun, though.

I enjoyed the movie. It didn't impress me, really. It did only mildly disappoint as there really wasn't anything 'new' that was spectacular that was added... That said, I had 'moderate' expectations and it delivered those quite well.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the theater I normally go to was 'acquired' by another chain - and their 'pre noon' showings are only 5 bucks! Woo! That definitly will motivate me to go out and see more flicks. 9 bucks for a matinee was just not very inspiring, prior.

I, for one, hope it is just as good as the older episodes. It sure was a fun show for it's time. To be honest, there's more than enough material to have a go with for them. It has the right format to be fantastic, even if they refine it some.

I think you're in a tough spot with this situation.
My advice would be to call and cancel direct tv after the first day of a new billing period and then wait.
They WILL call you and offer you both cash off your next bill in addition to a lower rate over a period of time (which can be quite considerable - and they will up the ante almost daily).

After working on trying to get my bill down for months with DTV, they really had nothing to offer until I had unsubscribed.
The SOBs actually called while I was getting Dish Network installed.
I ended up paying less for internet/phone/basic Dish channels with HD DVR than I would for just Direct TV... Although, the deal Direct TV wanted to give me was comparable to what I'm paying now. Frankly, as much as I hate the dated DVRs from Direct TV, they do have the best search function, and also - their channel selection and the NFL ticket make them far and way superior to any comparable option.

Seems like the deals come, though, when you cancel.
112  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: World Cup 2010 thread on: June 08, 2010, 02:47:39 PM
The midfield coach Bradley has been using is pretty suspect. He's been going with Bradley/Clark an awefull lot lately as 'holding midfielders' - and it's very very middle weak. I know Bradley is tough and knocks some people around a bit, but for the most part, he's just crap. I can live with him being out there - but Torres really needs to be in the mix. We're a different team with Torres in the middle - the kid is just a player. I also like Stuart Holden getting more time.

Out of all the US play I've seen in the last year, our midfield has been NOTICEABLY better without Bradley out there. The guy just does nothing well but take up some space and play 'ok' defense. I think people are just used to him being there.

I'm really worried about some of our defenders. You know what you get from the Gooch, he's decent. Cherundolo is more of a wing back style of guy and a decent defender - but beyond those 2? The US is in serious trouble.

We're likely going to need a few key bounces and a bit of luck to get thru. I have a feeling the US ends up 1-1-1 and will have to rely on goal differential to move on. Of course, if somehow we ninja a draw or, god forbid, a win vs England, then we're most likely going to move on. I'm really encouraged by what I've seen in the past 6 months from the team offensively and think we might be able to sneak in, but I will not get my hopes up. There's one thing you CANNOT do in the World Cup (unless your Italy or a powerhouse of that nature) is be conservative and expect to get by. You just have to go for it. I hope coach Bradley isn't too conservative.

No matter what, I can't wait. Start the games woo! I'll be up bright and early PT for all of them.

You know - I've stuck with the show. It's got it's big meh's and it's fairly interesting things. If I didn't see it, I wouldn't mind. But after the finale, the table is set for something potentially badass. Now maybe they'll use what they have and make it more exciting next season. It's got a ton of potential, but I think they dragged the series out maybe 4 episodes more than they probably needed.

Man, amazing what a talented Director can do to enhance an already fantastic package - I really thought the Safety Dance bit was one of the strongest to date (playing on the flash mob videos you see now and again)... Brilliant brilliant stuff. Dream a Little Dream was pretty powerful too - in it's simplicity.

I'm still rolling over Neil Patrick Harris/Jane Lynch's back/forth. I love when 2 great actors do their stuff like that.
115  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Heroes Season Four on: May 13, 2010, 08:55:00 AM
I hate to say the writer's strike killed this show. I can't. It was just one of the poorest written shows I've ever seen. It was like the writers had no idea what they were dealing with 90% of the time.
How this last season ended could possibly be up there as one of the dumbest things ever... Even though the plotline had so much potential. Crap, they killed the plotline, too. So much was in place for this show to be a 'classic' - but after S1, those responsible for the show should be banished to a 'lost' island - never to return and ruin TV shows.

So I just did a start to finish full on marathon of Glee. I figured I'd check it out due to positive reviews and Jane Lynch (one of my favs) being in it.
It reminds me of "Saved By the Bell" meets "Cop Rock" but somehow it just totally works...

I don't think I've seen something so unbelievably ridiculous as Jane Lynch in the Madonna episode. I was crying during the Vogue part. I don't think there's a human alive that could've pulled that off and made it so funny.
There's just some sick twisted comedy going on. There's also so many tiny 'attention to detail' comedy bits for easy snickers. I dunno, so far this show works for me like the Simpsons first 7-8 years worked for me...It works on so many different levels. I'm just ticked I didn't wait til the end of the season to check it out.. Stupid waiting for new episodes.
