At least some people died during ep 2 and it was about dinosaurs f'n up humans and humans figuring out what to do.
82  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Terra Nova on: September 29, 2011, 05:10:19 PM
If Falling Skies was a 2, 2 1/2 star effort, then Terra Nova is about a 3-4 star effort. Yeah it looks nice most of the time. Yeah, it's something I totally want to watch... And here we go again. It's on a major network. I don't know what I was expecting, but I was hoping for something less blah. Can we please have dinosaurs other than raptors or 'slashers' just one time? FFS. Is it me or were the dinosaurs impossible to injure? Stupid.

The resistance thing is what really pisses me off about the show, unless it's a quality idea, which we probably won't find out until the s1 cliffhanger finale, probably.
If I wanted to see human v human drama, I'd watch human v human drama. It'd be sooo much cooler if it was humans vs their environment. They are in a different ecosystem with lots of different challenges that presents. DUDE, they share the planet with DINOSAURS, that's awesome! Why can't it be more about that? Or will it be? I doubt it. I'm not asking for land of the lost or something with some f'd up sleestacks as a nemesis, but if it's focuses primarily on the resitance vs pilgrims, this show is going to really suck. icon_biggrin

Sounds like a fun week.
Too bad the NFL hasn't started the reg season yet. That'd be perfect.

87  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL Official Pre-Season Thread on: August 21, 2011, 07:25:53 PM
Well, that's why the preseason is mostly for game speed preparation and talent evaluation. Sometimes there are situations, like say the 2 minute drill, that can be very important to practice. But that's all it is, practice.
You learn a lot about teams in preseason and it has nothing to do with winning/losing. I've seen a LOT of really blahzay and uninspired defensive play so far, even though the games aren't all that high scoring.

I'm not quite done with watching all the games yet for this week (stupid nfl.com feed keeps putting me back at the start of the replay) and after almost 2 weeks of watching all the games, I'd say kickoffs are turning out to be a MUCH bigger issue than I anticipated. I knew there would be a lot more touchbacks, but wow - and also, you have to consider how many players trying to get return experience are running the ball out from 7-9 yards deep in the end zone. That's crazy time. Touchbacks are going to double, IMO, once the regular season starts, if not more. Either that, or kickers will try for more hang time (which would be a smarter move) and THEN it would get very interesting with the coverage only having 5 yards to get up to speed prior to the kick. It's got to evolve somehow. Special teams coaches are not going to be satisfied with their opponent starting on the 20.

This show seems like the aliens killed everyone with IQ higher than 80. The amount of idiotic decisions made by these characters is staggering. Plus, I wanted a show about a band of resistance fighters bringing it to the alien overlords, not a weekly "where's my kid?" episode. It's about 90% "think of the children" and 10% "Noah Wyle and Moon Bloodgood flirt/banter", with a little action thrown in for good measure.

Haha! Well said. I'm glad it's wrapping up this week. I should've dumped it already, but meh, what's 1 more episode?
91  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Torchwood: Miracle Day (Season 4) on: August 06, 2011, 10:27:27 PM
Dang. I kinda wish I just waited for the show to finish and then watched it all in 2 sittings or something. Good episode last night (ep 5 I think it was?). The plot just keeps getting more and more f'd. There's just so much not exposed, yet. Dangit, I wish I could be more patient... Because it's a pretty fun ride, so far.
92  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Torchwood: Miracle Day (Season 4) on: August 01, 2011, 05:01:44 PM
Bill Pullman has been awesome so far. The series is 'ok', as it stands, but I think it's going somewhere. Just hope it's worth the payoff. Captain Jack is a great character, could really care less if the rest of the 'good guys' get offed on the way.

I have 0 idea of Amy Whinehouse's ability. I hear she's great.
But that's the thing with the 27's. Dangit, I got a book about the '27s' for a gift. It's painful to read about the '27's'.
Why'd you just give yourself up, in spite or your art, is beyond me.
That said, you have to deal with the demon of substance. Unless you understand what it's like vomiting on the floor for hours on end just thinking about your drug of choice, you can't really relate. A LOT of people judge, but they just don't get it. There really is nothing close to addiction in human-kind other than 'falling' in love for a few months. That's as close as I can get verbally, and it still isn't close. It's 100x bigger.

I hope she RIP, but substance abuse is almost impossible to tackle. I won't criticize any of the 27s for it.
The real tragedy is there really is no way to deal with substance abuse. It's all about human will, but to be human is to fail.

WOO Better off Ted!
I didn't see this until I got Netflix recently and WOW, it's fantastic.
Admittedly, shows like this are better when you don't have to wait a week to see the next episode. Better of Ted marathons are almost every bit as good as doing Arrested Development marathons, or Trailer Park Boys marathons.

Really strong show. My 3 favorite characters are the 3 leading females, they're all incredible. I just got done watching s2 again yesterday. Really entertaining.
95  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Torchwood: Miracle Day (Season 4) on: July 12, 2011, 02:06:53 AM
I didn't start watching Torchwood until S3, and that was quite good... And even though I'm sure I missed a ton of backstory, I never felt like I wasn't 'in on the joke', or so to speak. I like that they are retelling what Torchwood is and what's up with it's characters in s4. That's just good story telling.
To be honest, even though there's only been 1 episode... I think it has potential to be fantastic. Just the premise of the main story line is freaking crazy and awesome. I really am eager for whats to come.

Oh yeah, and Bill Pullman knocks his character out of the park. Creepy s o b.
96  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Falling Skies: Spielberg Produced Alien Invasion Drama for TNT on: July 08, 2011, 06:56:41 AM
Wow, kinda surprised they re-upped this fast. The subject matter is a home run. I'm guarenteed to at least give it a shot. Heck, I watched most of V last season (why? WHY???).
My opinions mirror that of many others in this thread. It's a really really weak show that has to be driven by strong characters. I'm not certain any of the characters are all that interesting. Sure, there's a couple, but I'm not so certain the subject matter is strong enough. The alien presence should be horrifying. It should feel much more tense than it does. I just don't feel it at all.

The only ones creating tension is the humans. The aliens are not even much of a character in the show, at least to me. Maybe they are trying to develop the human characters first? I don't know. The aliens seem hapless now that they've mauled what they didn't show already. That's a huge problem for me. It's only 2 eps in and I'm eager to see if it picks up, as I've heard suggested. As it stands now, it's pretty crap, to me. It's not fair to dorks like me to make an alien invasion show and focus entirely on humans! IT JUST AIN'T RIGHT! Maybe it just ain't for me... I still have almost nothing to watch during the week, so I'll give it til ep 6, and then re-sort it out. I hope it does improve. The first hour was really weak and ineffective, to me.

Man, I was excited as heck when they said they were going to do this game. But like Diablo 2, it's years after when it should've been released. I dunno, with what blizz has done with Starcraft and WoW, I have lost ALL interest for now, sadly. SC2 is o.k., but nothing really all that groundbreaking compared to the hype and WoW: Cataclysm is an overglorified game polisher that really didn't add anything worthwhile to a stagnating MMO. I dunno what's happened with Bliz, but their stuff is getting progressively less innovative and creative - and show stopping. It seems most of their ideas are jacked from other things and they're not as much of a leader as they were 10 years ago. It's kind of depressing. They were always a 'gold standard' dev house. I loved d1 and d2 so much. I have still been playing d2 on the ladder again. I dunno, I just am not excited anymore. The game could've been out 5 years ago when it was overdue. D2 was so f'n amazing (and eventually only playable for maybe a few weeks on end before boredom set in, but I always went back). Hopefully D3 will be more like D2 and less like WoW, and I'm hearing more of the ladder and that scares the crap out of me. I think WoW's dev team leaders are utter garbage.

Not gonna go crazy over the 9rs taking Kapernick. I really liked watching him in college (homer here in NV).
However, I spent a dickload of time watching tape on the top QBs and I'm wondering what the Viqueens saw in Ponder. Could be the biggest reach in the draft (ok, it is, I'm trying to be fair). I've only seen a couple of his games live and the best I can say is 'just a guy'. I could be wrong, though.

As far as I'm concerned, there were only 3 1st round QBs - Locker, Dalton and Mallet. After that? Wow.
Not saying any of the other QBs can't develop. Kapernick is a prime example of a QB that needs to red shirt a bit. He's mostly a runner with a ridiculous arm (and a 3/4 arm throwing motion that I don't care for, but god damn he's a gamer). I still havn't a clue on Gabbert, he has really 'happy' feet - and Newton? Well, he's got incredible ability. It's impossible to really know what you have with him.

Dunno. Dalton throws that best ball in the draft. Good for Cinci snagging him. The REAL shame was Mallet falling to the Patsies. The kid has real ability, although, he's got red flags that make me not want to draft him, also.

It's tough to grade out teams right now, I hate doing so, but I'd say the 'best/worst' move was Atlanta moving up and Cleveland getting a king's ransom worth of picks. There are very very few players I'd give up 2 drafts worth of talent for and you're freaking NUTS to think Julio Jones is on that level. Yes, he's very very talented. I liked watching him in college, but he's like White/Jenkins in Atlanta already - a super talented guy that drops a DICKLOAD of easy passes. I know White has huge numbers, but crap, how many CRITICAL balls has he dropped? ALOT! Outta all the WRs I've seen come out semi-recently, Calvin Johnson woulda been the ONLY guy I give up that many picks for, even then, I'm really freaking nervous.

Who knows what will all happen, but I'm scared to death of my Pack going up against Suh/Fairley/Avril/Vandenbosch.

Woo! Draft Day! Couldn't sleep at all last night. Am I an NFL fool? You better believe it.
With the current labor news, things could get crazy, especially tommorrow when 'rules' on what teams can/should do might open up the trading, which would be great. If teams are making runs on QBs today (like Minnesota taking say Dalton at 12, because he's 'best available'), then I wouldn't be shocked that trades will NOT be part of day 2 and beyond until things get sorted in the 8th circuit.

There's just too many 'interesting' rumors to list them all. But worth noting, because it's the annual 'wtf' moment from the Raiders - rumor has it the Raiders want to move back into the first round to take UNR's Colin Kapernick. The guy is a nice prospect, for sure, but in the first round? Depends on the runs that do or do not happen. I'd love to see the Pack move their #1 for a #1 next year + a pick this year, unless there's a really sweet prospect available, but who knows what Thompson will do.

I'm making "draft nachos" for the draft. Got some sweet Wisconsin cheddar, gonna do up some taco sauce/guacamole/salsa, gonna cut up some veges and then stuff my face woo. Can't wait.
106  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL Draft 2011 on: April 27, 2011, 04:52:17 PM
Again, not a huge fan of "mock" drafts, but Mayock is putting his out tonight. If you're a punter, get your plays in now, the lines will certainly move a lot after. If you're in a pool, pray your picks are close! I'm a huge fan of Mayock. I enjoy Kiper Jr, also, but they're different - (and also the best 2 covering the draft).
There are TONS of rumors today and I expect there to be even more until the draft gets going. Dang, the anticipation is probably more fun than the draft itself haha.

I'm totally fired up about the draft. I'm not much one for 'mocks'. It's like posting your NCAA Bracket. What I do see, though, is at least 3 QBs gone by the 10th pick. I have seen scenarios where 4 could be gone within the first 15 picks! Mike Mayock projects 8 QBs going in the first 3 rounds. I was projecting 7 in 2 rounds (or they'd all be gone by the early 3rd). I think there's going to be a dickload of moves. Last year lined up for TONS of media hyped 'potential' trades. This year, I think with the draft mostly being kinda 'meh', outside of defensive linemen and strong QB prospects (this is as good of a class I've ever seen in guys you can roll the dice on, since there is no #1 elite QB available per se). Both positions are obviously coveted - it's entirely plausible that you can see some serious 'runs' on certain positions and tons of wheeling and dealilng.

That's the real question of this draft...where do the QBs go?  Many of these guys are 2nd round talents, but do teams trade up to get "their guy"?  Where does Ryan Mallett go, considering that he's probably the best QB in the draft when he's on his game?  Does Carolina take a huge risk on Cam Newton?  Who loves Blaine Gabbert and can overlook his mediocre production?  What about Dalton's arm strength?  Which one of these guys will drop like Jimmy Clausen?  So on and so forth...it only takes one team to fall in love with a guy and it should be interesting to find out what teams really think about these guys.  I could see 6 QBs going in the first round...and I can see 2 QBs going in the first round.

Quote from: McBa1n on April 26, 2011, 02:10:26 AM

The one trade that you listed, Adar, is completely plausible, is for Detroit to move up ahead of Dallas to make a play on Tyron Smith. The Titans would be another good trading partner. I think they'd like to add picks, if they could and add more players. The move actually makes a TON of sense. I think the line is a bigger priority than corners for the Lions right now. They've got a ton of question marks. Yes, they need secondary help, especially with Cutler and Rodgers in their division, but I think that 1 guy isn't going to change that - especially not a prospect corner. I think it'd be a sharp move by the Lions, personally. The thing is, Peterson could be there for the 9rs to draft him in their spot. There's a report that he's #1 on their board. Also, if they traded back, I don't think they'd have a shot at Locker. But it's possible within that mock draft and it would be a good pick in that spot.

Well, they're all plausible trades.  smile

The Titans may want to move down, but the real question will be if there are any trading partners when it comes to their pick.  I'm not too sure there will be.  Also, do they pass on Gabbert and/or Fairley and run the risk of getting neither?

I don't see any way that Patrick Peterson gets past 6.  He's in the top 3 on many boards and if he falls to Cleveland, they'd be flooded with offers to trade down.  Houston would like to move up to get Peterson.  So I don't see the 49ers getting Peterson unless they move up.

Quote from: McBa1n on April 26, 2011, 02:10:26 AM

Also, Adar, your Giants/Miami trade might be a reach. The G-men likely won't need to trade down to get Pouncey. Who knows, though. I think it's more likely a team like the Packes move AHEAD of the Giants to take Pouncey. Maybe your idea for a deal in that spot makes more sense now? <foot inserted into mouth> I agree Miami might try to get out of their spot, but I also think they might be looking at a QB for their pick. If they traded back into the 20s, I think they'd still be able to get a QB that they like. I really don't see Seattle taking a QB with their first rounder. I think they are waiting to make a play for Kolb (since he has essentially been playing in the same o that Bevel runs out in Seattle). I just can't wait to see how it all shakes out.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you.  In my mock, the Giants traded up from 19 to 15 to get Pouncey to jump ahead of the Patriots, who could select Pouncey at 17.  FYI, the Packers probably don't have the firepower in the draft to move up from #32 to get ahead of the Giants at #19.  To do so, they'd have to give up their 1st, 2nd and 4th to get the #18  pick and I doubt they'll do that.  Not to mention that I don't think San Diego would trade down that far and miss out on one of the prime DEs.

I was just saying I don't think the G-men didn't necesarily need to move up to make a run on Pouncey. But heck yeah, I'm on board the QBs are the real story of this draft. I'm praying there's at least 2 runs on them. Anything that could help prospects down to my Packers is a good thing. I'm with ya on every QB and the questions. Some teams are likely going to be desperate and have to trade up to take a player that should go in a round later. I don't see any serious drops, except MAYBE with Mallet, ala last year's QB drops, but it's unlikely. To be fair, I think Clausen was far too over-rated coming out and felt he could've dropped even more. McCoy, I think, went a little bit before he should've, also. That just wasn't a crop of talent like we have this season. If things hold true to Mayock's projections, it will be a record for the most QBs taken in the first 3 rounds. I don't see any scenarrio, unless it becomes 8 QBs taken in 4 rounds.

Can someone explain to me how Jamarcus Rusell was forgotten so quickly?  Cam Newton has had one productive year at College (Div 1).  He passed for a total of 50 yards in D1 before this year.  I'm just.confused.  One productive year (and Tim Tebow had three years at equal or BETTER production), and MULTIPLE issues...and people are completely convinced he's going to be a great pro QB, why?

Tell me who is convinced he's going to be a great pro QB.

Exactly. A lot of teams would feel better taking Newton in the 2nd round. 1 year starter at a major program is not what player personnel types like. Newton is being compared to Jam Russel and Vince Young. I think both comparisons are completely out of line. They're black and they play QB and they played for bigtime D1 colleges. That's where it ends.
The thing that's tough about Newton is there's just not a lot of tape on him. Teams are reaching back into his Jr College season to get tape on him. Also, with Newton, when a guy like Mike Mayock says 'he's done everything right', that's very strong language - and language definitly influenced by the decision-makers of the NFL. Lots of guys have had flags coming out of school, but Newton never showed up overweight or has failed a drug test (that we know about). He's not beat up a woman, either. What we DONT know is what b.s. he was invlolved in regarding illegal payments to go to Auburn. There's definitly some smoke there, but we won't ever know. I don't mind if he took money. I'd mind if he showed up 40 lbs overweight for the combine.

I think Carolina has to take him because of his elite physical ability, arm strength and the fact he's a winner... Not to mention they have no 2nd round pick. The first round is for taking the biggest 'upside' possible. You're damned no matter what you do, but it's a damn fine gamble. To be fair, though. If I'm Carolina, I'd rather bail out of that spot I'd rather add more players to the team in hopes of improving.

What'd be nice to know is what 'loopholes' congress wants to close.
When one of them are asked about it - you see a deer in the headlights.

Sure it's great companies like GE create jobs blah blah, but you have to admit getting off without paying taxes on that level of profit is ridiculous. GE employees do need to drive on roads and stuff and there is infrustructure to conduct commerce that is required. Sure the employees are paying those taxes, but what about the entity that is really benefitting it?
Something is grossly wrong.

Yeah, I saw the bit on Colbert's show. Freaking hilarious. Well, when you have such great source material, you at least hope the masters will knock it out of the park. Friggin awesome. I'm going to use that line in the future, for sure, that it was not 'intended to be an actual statement'.

This documentary f'd me up good. I don't regret watching it. It's real. It's sad. It's scary.
I want to watch it again, but sheesh. I don't know if I can take it. It's sad to see such a cluster-f.
God damn those are some tough s.o.b.s. out there.

This thread makes me want to watch The Adventures of Baron Munchausen again.

That movie was awesome. Lucked out and saw that in theater (had to go to NYC to see it, though, stupid long drive).

I always bitch about remakes. There is a line, it's been crossed. It keeps getting crossed. Wait til they remake Godfather or something else that is perfect as is, then there will be no line. It just blows my mind. Why would you WANT to remake Time Bandits? I don't think it did that well the first go around, but damn there's a ton of fanbois (myself included). That's not exactly reason enough to do a remake IMO.
