There were closed beta sign-ups that went up on October 28th for choosing on November 4th.

The sign-up form is still available here.  I don't know if they're still choosing people, but I definitely signed up!

I have yet to have a co-op game work.

Every time I go to join a co-op session, I either get a network error or a timeout attempting to join a game.  There's nothing wrong with my network settings.

Anyone else have an issue?

every attempt at playing I've used the same strategy with Oblivion gates:  I keep pumping up my speed and running straight through whichever setup a gate has. once it gets high enough you can pretty much close down a gate in minutes.

Heh, yeah.. That's what a co-worker of mine was telling me.

From the walkthrough I looked at, getting the different towns to help you out isn't required.  You could just go straight to the next part of the main storyline.  But I've read it helps for the very next part of the game.

OK, so the whole strategy to really roll over the main quest in this game seems to be not really leveling up.  I beat the Kvatch quest while still level one, and right now I'm at four and I've been blowing through the main story.  I closed the big gate at Bruma and now I'm gathering forces, which I'm told is about the halfway point in the main story.

Yep, I was doing the same thing last month - starting Oblivion over with the intention of actually finishing the main quest instead of spending 100 hours doing everything else in the game.

I had stopped on the main quest way back years ago because of Kvatch being extremely difficult, and it was because I was already level 12-13 when I got there.  This time I've stuck to the main quest only and Oblivion gates are a breeze.  I am actually at the same place you are in the game right now, gathering forces from the surrounding towns.  I just hate closing Oblivion gates so that stalled me on playing, the Minecraft and everything else that came out since has me shelving Oblivion once again.  I'll get back to it though!  I will finish the game!

You know you can just grab lava and water and 'make' your own Obsidian, right? Yeah, it'll require you to make lava molds and such, but you don't have to get diamond (and then mine obsidian) to make said portal.

And I love that costume. Freaky and just plain cool at the same time.

In order to grab lava, one must locate a lava source block first.

Making lava molds?  Obsidian forms only when water comes in contact with non-moving lava.  In order to do this, you'd have to make a mold, put the bucket of lava in it, then pour the water.  Now you have one block of obsidian.  Then build another mold, get another bucket of lava, pour it in, put a bucket of water in to make another block of obsidian....  Wow, that would take a very long time.  It only took me about 15 minutes to find enough diamond to make a diamond pick axe.   I just need to locate enough sources of lava to make the obsidian.

ran into an interesting bug:  I fired up one of my old saves, equipped myself (for some reason I had nothing in my inventory) and then I was exploring and mistakenly dug upwards into a section with a bunch of zombies.  after getting killed by the resulting avalanche of doom, I respawned and went to collect my stuff.  I found the cave I was in, but all the digging and torch placing was gone, as was any signs of zombies or any of my items.  going 'wtf?' I pitched myself off of a mountain for a quick respawn to base, and sure enough all my items were back there in the chest.  thinking that somehow all of my changes were gone I went down to the room where I jsut had put in 7 furnaces to make glass, and those were still there.  so some of my changes kept and others didn't.

on another note do the base graphics fhe grass and tree leaves looks a little different in color?  I wonder if he tweaked them for fall, unless it's the new biome system.

I know that there was a bug where when you died you wouldn't drop your items.  Notch fixed that in an emergency update this morning (which subsequently broke the armor system).  I died several times last night and lost the stuff I was carrying, but any changes in the world were still there when I went back.

and yeah, the colors are changed slightly for the different biomes.  I'm loving the update so far.  I just have to find diamond and a source of obsidian so I can get to the Hell world.

The co-op seems broken....

I went into the Live room in the sanctuary and used the "enter a random XBLive Player's Game".  I did this 5 different times.  Each time I did this, the game would load up like I was going into someone's game, and as soon as I 'arrived', a screen popped up saying:  "The other player has paused the game.  Press A to Leave".  No matter how long I waited, it didn't go away.  I could only back out of the mode.

Anyone else get this working?

I swear I chose it's own dir when i installed it but its not there. Why did it go into steam? I own the store bought disc version.

Yes, you actually hold their hands during flat level walking (without holding the run button - if you run you'll automatically let go but the person will run after you). It doesn't work too well (arms look wonky) but it helps the immersion and such.

Personally, the game is about 20-25 hours long, with you able to play a LOT more (10-15 easily) if you want to do/find everything, make everybody love you, etc.

Right now I'm sitting at what I think is the end, but ...I really can't say anything else without seriously spoiling things. And here's no way to look up how much time you've put into it either.

I picked this up yesterday.  I was wary when the first one came out that this was just another way to cash in on the Guitar Hero series.  I've waited to even play it until DJ Hero 2.  I have always been a fan of music mash-ups from different genres, and that is exactly what this is.  They definitely simulate the concepts of switching between tracks, scratching, and adding extra effects.  I know DJing is not this simple, but it 'feels' like I'm mixing the songs.

I am playing on medium right now and I think I'll need to get familiar with the songs before I step up the difficulty.

What I have read about the console versions is once you get to New Vegas, there's some type of memory leak which makes your load times progressively longer.  I've seen feeds where load times on the 360 are over a minute long.  I'm not sure if this also happens on the PC version as I haven't reached New Vegas yet.  But I'll be watching for it once I get there.

It's because of the issue making the long load times where the crashes and lockups happen on the console versions as well.

Part of the problem of hardcore mode right now is that, even though it's interesting, they can't really balance the game to make it an interesting level of "hardcore". As such, the sleep, food, water, etc... becomes just little time sink nuisances, rather than interesting elements.

For example, for ammo weight to matter, ammo would have to be heavy, and rare. Unfortunately, Fallout 3 and NV is balanced such that enemies have unlimited ammo since their AI never stops shooting.

I would love to see a mod completely rebalance the game for hardcore, but that would probably require more than just some blanket number adjustments.

I am 100% for everything in hardcore mode.  I don't feel it's a nuisance to have to eat, drink, and sleep.  Items that were worthless before now serve a purpose.  Before I'd never buy water or food.  I'd just stock up on stim packs and I was good.  Now I'm buying purified water whenever I can find it and cooking up gecko steaks on the campfire.

Ammo having weight is fine with me as well.  I haven't really been hindered by it, but I also know that because everything has weight, I've adjusted my character to being able to carry more.

Also, fast travel has always felt like cheating to me.  There is no risk involved bouncing around from location to location.  With hardcore mode, sleep, food, and water stats matter with fast travel and you can't travel further than those will let you.  Then once you do, you have to take care of those if you traveled a far distance.  You're still safe from encounters, but there's some consequence using fast travel with hardcore mode.

If one of these idiots actually took the time to try and actually make something, instead of just borrowing other's techniques for destruction, he might actually realize that creating new content and features for a game as large and complex as minecraft is a slow and time consuming process.

Back to minecraft itself, it's sounding like Notch is really starting to add more gameplay elements on top of the crafting. Of course the new block types help too. slywink

I'm ignoring the DDOSers, and from Notch's twitter updates, he's ignoring them also.

The October 31st update is really going to change the game.  From the updates Notch has given over the past couple of weeks, it sounds like he's going to be able to make all of the goals he's set.  I'm really looking forward to it!

Well, there's 3 different versions of the game.  A reward like what you said wouldn't really matter for the other 2 platforms.

I'm fine with the reward that it has.  I'm not playing hardcore for the reward.  I'm playing it for the extra challenge it presents.  And so far, I've been loving it.  There are a lot of items in the game that are really pointless without hardcore mode.  There's no reason for you to eat in the game ever.  In Fallout 3, I was able to just use stims to keep myself alive.  I never had to eat or drink.  Hardcore mode makes those water and food items useful.  The restrictions on fast travel make for a more interesting system as well.

The 360 version does seem to be getting hit with crashing complaints, though not always as some reviews don't mention problems at all.

That said, my early experience on the PC has been bug free and the few long-term comments I've seen (a few reviewers have been playing the PC version) indicate it's pretty stable in comparison.

From what I've gathered, the reviews that don't talk about crashes and long load times didn't play the game longer than a few hours.

The reviews that played for 30+ hours on the 360 saw the crashes and long load times.

What I've heard happens is getting into New Vegas, the game starts memory leaking, which makes load times longer and longer.  Then the crashes happen.  We'll see if the PC suffers the same fate.

Apparently even the PC version has crash bugs, but seemingly not as bad as the console versions. Of the consoles one reviewer preferred the 360 over the PS3 due to the 360's anti-aliasing, although I'll have to take his word on this, it's been so long since I've been familiar with those terms.

I haven't seen a single review for the PC version.  Could you list somewhere that said the PC version is showing crash bugs also?

I've pre-ordered the game, because I'd blindly follow Peter Molyneux off a cliff, but....

Has anyone noticed Peter and Lionhead haven't really shown more than a couple of minutes or so of actual gameplay for Fable 3?  And we specifically haven't seen any gameplay footage on the 'new features':

- The touch system for leading people around and making them do stuff
- What the entire interface and gameplay will be after you become King / Queen
- Any other details other than "You will lead a revolution, make promises, and then keep or break them once you become King / Queen.
- Co-Op play with each person having their own character and no tethering

There were a couple of diary videos Lionhead made that kind of showed off the new map system - maybe 30 seconds of that.  There was a housing video released on Youtube that showed you can swap out furniture, but there was nothing mentioned on if it would have any kind of game effect.

If you don't get NHL 11, you should just throw the XBox away because you're wasting it.

Sports games are SO boring.  I will throw the XBox away soon.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.  It seems like I should get Halo: Reach instead of Halo 3?  I had thought about getting Fable 2 but shied away from the M rating.

One thing I had forgotten to ask about was XBox Live Arcade, so thanks for the recommendations there too.  I am very interested in that for myself as well.

Fable 2 has a mature rating because in the game you can have S-E-X.  It doesn't actually show it, the screen fades to black as you get into bed with the girl / guy, and you hear some moaning.  I don't believe there's any profanity, and there certainly isn't any nudity.  But you can get married and then cheat on your wife.

Perhaps they're worried about what happens when someone comes up with a cheat they can't detect in SP and they're throwing the fear of God into their customers who would use these things.  They're establishing a precedent that if you cheat in the SP mode (which we've established affects the MP portion) you will be banned.

Draconian?  Perhaps.  But the MP portion of Starcraft is almost a cottage industry in a lot of places.

Why not use the in-game cheats?

In-game cheats don't always cover everything someone would want to do in the game.  There will always be reasons why someone would want to use a third party trainer over the stock in-game cheats.

You could very well be right about scaring people.  Achievements can be taken very seriously, and if there is a cheat which allows people to affect those achievements in single player and Blizzard can't detect it, I can see where putting up a blanket suspension or disabled key would certainly help to prevent that.  Just disabling achievements wouldn't be enough to stop people from doing it.

You're not getting my point.  They can detect the in-game cheats because THEY devised them.  This doesn't mean they can detect ALL cheats from ANYWHERE.  And even if they could, why should they expend any effort in keeping up with these third party cheats as they evolve?

But in any case, if the SP portion allows for perks and bonuses in MP and they don't want third party cheats to spoil this for those who don't use them, then simply use the in game cheats.  i don't understand your problem with this?

I see your point.  That's correct.  Blizzard can't detect all cheats from anywhere.

I am specifically talking about the cheats they did detect on single player games.  They detected people playing the single player version, and instead of disabling achievements like they do for the in-game cheats, they suspended or disabled their cd keys.

No presumptions.  They detected them because they banned people for using them.  I would rather they didn't devote any effort to keeping up with it, but they did and they do.

You're presuming they detected ALL of them.  And that they will ALWAYS be able to do so without devoting any extra effort to the process.

I don't care about how many people they detect.  I am specifically talking about that Blizzard detected people using third party cheats in single player, and they suspended them or disabled their CD key.  They received the same punishment as those who were cheating in online games.

Blizzard should have disabled achievements if that is what they are worried about when it comes to people cheating in single player mode.  They have the ability to do this because they disable achievements if you use the in-game single player cheats.

Suspending or disabling a CD key for a game because a player cheated in single player mode should never happen.

If the achievements in single player directly tie into multiplayer then I can certainly understand banning those who use cheats/trainers in sp.  Given the fact that the starcraft franchise is frequently viewed as a multiplayer game first and a single player experience second, i think that's quite fair.

There are in-game cheats for single player, and if you use those, Blizzard disables achievements.

If Blizzard can detect third party cheats, they can simply disable achievements when they detect them as well.  No need to ban.

you mean used trainers and the like. not cheats.

I think we're talking about semantics here.  Trainers let you cheat in single player mode.

Yeah, I have a problem with banning people from playing a game that they cheat in single player for.  It's one thing to ban people who are cheating online, but there's no harm in letting people cheat all they want in single player.

Also, the article I reference calls it 'cheats and trainers'.  So even if you don't believe trainers are cheating, they covered both.

Remember the cheating bans at the beginning of the month?

Those bans affected people who used cheats on the single player version of the game also.

I'm considering getting X3: Terran Conflict.  I've read there's no point really in going back to play the other titles.  The Superbox would be good if you want the extras and the 300 page encyclopedia though.
