Jacob didn't do anything for Jack besides hand him a candy bar. I don't see how that influenced him at all. I'm pretty sure kid Sawyer would have finished the letter with another pen even if Jacob hadn't given him one. Jacob certainly influenced and changed the lives of Hugo and Sayeed. It still seems weird that Jacob resurrects Locke after he fell out the window. Does Jacob not know how all these people are coming together to eventually cause his demise?

Perhaps he had to die in order for whatever bigger plan is behind all of this - willingly accepting his death as a sacrifice for a greater cause. Also, I'm not convinced he "resurrected" Locke - I figured he just woke him from unconsciousness.

a little bit on the skill trees.  looks like they are trying to open up the skill trees a bit so you're not stuck into one particular path, but then everyone will have the same build of the week eventually.

Well, something I read a few months ago from one of the Blizzard designers suggested that they were playing down stats and skill points somewhat and a true "build" would be more dependent on what kind of items you had in combo with those skills - runes, stat/skill modifying armor and weapons, etc etc. Basically putting items on a higher priority.

I watched a bunch of Firefly this weekend, and aside from wishing it was still on, I realized once again that I really think that Whedon's best talent in writing is in developing characters. If Echo continues to be the focus of the show, I don't think it will improve much, though we are starting to see her "adapt."

I think the true character development in this one are Ballard, DeWitt and Boyd.

Yes, yes.

Yep, right there with you on Signs (I loved it) and The Village (enjoyed it) but he's been going straight downhill. Hell, downhill implies way too gentle a slope. I used to say I would watch anything of his regardless of reviews. He has lost that status.

I'm not sure Jack was trying to change the future - I think he's just decided that things are going to happen because the island wants them to happen, so there isn't much point in trying to impact things. The role reversal between Jack and Locke is one of my favorite parts about the series so far.

My family uses ours. Neither my wife and I are generally big exercise fans, so having a fun way to track weight and do the training is a Good Thing [Tm]. My 6 year old is a much bigger fan of the Aerobics and Balance games, where my wife tends to do more yoga, and I tend towards a broad mix.

On the plus, Wii Fit got her thinking about Wii Sports and now she loves the tennis game. She's not a video gamer, so I'm thinking of it like a gateway drug. smile

I saw it this afternoon, and my best description is thematically "A poor man's Signs." And I don't mean that (for me anyway) as derogatory, as I loved Signs. Knowing deals with a lot of the same sort of issues (how much of life is coincidence vs determinism, faith and loss of faith) but Signs was a very focused story and knew what it wanted to tell. Knowing wanders more. That said, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, and it has a couple scenes that I thought were fantastic and would have made it worth my matinee price even I didn't like the rest of the movie.

plus the fact that the Oceanic 6 were said to have been back for 3 years.  I wonder how they're going to handle that since the people that stayed didn't seem to have 3 years pass.

Well, the people who stayed didnt have 3 years pass for them because they have been time shifting so everything is kinda screwy, the people who left have had a normal 3 years pass. But now that the Oceanic 6 are back on the Island everything will get synched up again (between people who left and stayed), at least thats what it looks like. I'm just not sure if the new downed plane is in the same time as Jack/hurely/kate are, I'm assuming they are but then I thought the plane wouldn't crash so who knows.

I'm pretty sure the downed plane is in current time, Jack/Hurley/Kate are in the 70s, so Sun/Jin are still separated and Kate and Sawyer are still separated.
103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Streaming videos from your PC to the Xbox 360... on: February 19, 2009, 05:52:28 PM
I stream most of my television through the XBox. I have a 50" plasma that is 720P, so take that into account. It is all streamed via wireless network and the speed is very acceptable.

If your 360 is part of your network, you should be able to just select it in Windows Media Player as being allowed to be shared to. Then you just have to select folders in WMP to be shareable, and those folders show up on the Xbox - specifically in the My Videos section (or My Music section or whichever).

Picture quality and sound has been very acceptable to me. I also watch some shows via Netflix (CSI is one that I can watch currently via Netflix) and when it streams HD, I definitely notice the higher quality, but when it doesn't, I'm not particularly bothered by the lack. I think the "non-HD" is 480p and it looks fine to me.

This has been extremely nice and convenient.

Agreed. But it had better be better than the extended episodes they've been releasing on DVD.  The first one was tolerable, the 2nd 'Beast with a 20000000 backs was horrific. I wonder if Bender's Game is any good.

I thought Bender's Game was fantastic, but it's got all the gaming/fantasy references in it, which make me much more likely to enjoy anything. Anyway, I liked it about 2-3 times more than the other two, and it was the only one to be consistently funny all the way through.

Yes, yes. If Cold Stone is good, then Marble Slab is fantabulous. I asked the owner of the Marble Slab near us why there was such a dramatic difference, he said it was because Cold Stone used some sort of powdered milk that would sit on the shelves for a while, whereas Marble Slab used something fresher. Whatever the reason, Marble Slab is definitely noticeably better. Their birthday cake ice cream is killer.

Watchmen: Comic Books : Lord of the Rings: Fantasy Novels

Not a perfect comparison, but each is "the literature" of its genre. So it really isn't unexpected that every comic fan is excited (or nervous), much like pretty much everyone who liked fantasy novels was either excited or nervous about the release of LotR on film.

My wife and I like to play together and she's not big into the complicated strategy games. Vanilla Carcassonne is easy to pick up and is a nice quick game - once you get the hang of the rules, it can play in 45 mins, which is awesome.

I'm pretty sure we do, but most of the soda we purchase is on special (buy 3 12-packs get 2 free).  99% of the time I drink bottled water, beer, and bourbon, so most of the soda is consumed by guests/friends.  And, no offense to guests/friends, but I'd rather be economical in our selection of beverages than splurging on specialty brands like Jones.  I spend enough on water, beer, bourbon, milk, iced tea, etc, so the 12-pack soda specials provide a nice savings.  Sure, I may be slowly killing off our friends, but then I eventuall won't have to buy any more soda at all.   icon_twisted

Heh, I got that - that's similar to our philosophy, which is that everything in the house is (or tries to be) free of high fructose corn syrup, but the wife and I don't fret it when we have to go out to eat or to a friend's house. When you're a guest or serving guests, it's not worth going to high amounts of effort or expense.

One can of soda with HFCS will not have adverse health effects.  But 15 a day will.

One need not chug soda to OD on HFCS. The stuff is hidden in everything. If one eats processed foods, one inevitably eats more HFCS than can possibly be good. Last weekend I put a jar of hot pepper relish back on the grocer's shelf because the second ingredient was HFCS. You expect that in the sweet relishes...not so much in the hot ones.

The problem is more America's sweet tooth (and indifference/inattention to labels) than a lack of moderation.

We actually make a conscious effort to purchase foods that do not include HFCS in the ingredients list.  We avoid processed carbs and bleached flour, instead opting for whole grains and whole wheat (true whole wheat, not whole wheat made with bleached wheat flour).  The only HFCS in our house comes in the form of sugary sodas, which are primarily in the fridge for guests who don't like diet soda or for Jack-and-Coke when my wife opts for an alcoholic beverage.  Or on hangover days when I need sugar STAT.  And in those cases consumption is in moderation (which obviously was not the case the evening before  ninja).

Granted, a majority of society does not read package labels, but we do our best to cut HFCS out of our diet.  And the primary reason is limiting our intake of "empty" carbohydrates in order to maintain a healthier weight (which conveniently improves appearance as well Fabulous).

Do you have Jones soda where you live? Soda with cane sugar rather than HFCS. Serves well for when you want the caffeine or carbonation, but don't want the high fructose corn syrup.

Second would be Neverwinter Nights - all the extra content, I must have played tons and tons of user created modules, many of which were better than the original campaign.
