Anyone who is concerned about length should rest easy if you like to explore.  I spent about an hour just casing a single house that was part of a side quest.

While sneaking around Iím almost positive I heard a guard call someone a taffer.  icon_smile

Downloading right now.  I will hold Lordnine personally responsible if I don't like it.
I was actually kidding.  It has more in common with Invisible War than Thief.  Also, who thought giant robotic frogs were a good enemy choice?  When you hit them with your Katana they explode and cause damage. Itís awful.  icon_razz
763  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Dishonored on: October 09, 2012, 04:18:38 PM
It’s really a blend of a lot of things.  As I was playing last night the thing I kept coming back to is that it felt like a game that Looking Glass Studios would have made.  That’s a really good thing in my opinion.

The thief comparison comes in part due to the loot/stealing system in combination with the stealth and also how the levels are laid out.  I enjoyed Deus Ex greatly but I never felt like the levels in it were more than game obstacles.  Thief on the other hand created a world I could believe was real.  Dishonored has the same highly lived in world with realistic feeling architecture that offers up tons of secrets.

Also, if someone were to tell me that the world of Dishonored took place in the same universe but 100 years or so after the events of Thief II I could believe it without too much trouble.
764  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Dishonored on: October 09, 2012, 05:59:45 AM
Iím a little less than 2 hours in the game and I am very impressed.  Everything about the game is highly appealing and is bringing back fond memories of Thief of all things.  Since loot is hidden everywhere in the levels Iím having a blast exploring every nook and cranny.

Just an FYI for anyone who ordered from GMG.  I didn't receive an email with my Steam code but it was waiting for me when I logged into the site.  If you want to get a head start on your preload you might want to check your account.

Total Biscuit also just put up a first impressions video if you prefer to watch instead of read.

Just finished tonight.  That may be the first game to ever leave me with tears in my eyes.  I just feel like itís a shame that the game was made in such a creaky engine.  Redo it with a semi modern engine and it would become an instant classic.  As is itís still a must play for anyone who loves a great story.

So what's the word on playing these with only having seen the first season of the show?

I know it's meant to be a separate storyline but are there references and such?
I've seen the first season of the show but as far as I can tell they have nothing to do with each other.  This is the first adventure game to capture me since Grim Fandango so I would say if you're skipping it you're really missing out.

I thought this deserved a mention here.  Seems really interesting and the engine is pretty awesome as shown in the video.

A unique action RTS with an emphasis on defense. Mine a cluster of anomalous asteroids and defend yourself.

Iíve always enjoyed the base building aspect of an RTS and while I love games like DoWII that completely removed based building I wouldnít mind going back to a game that did it very well. In the case of this game the terrain you are building on is full deformable which could result in some interesting tactics.

The mining mechanic actually makes me think of an older game called Earth 2150 where the purpose of the campaign was to harvest a certain amount of resources throughout the campaign so that your faction could leave earth before the planet died. In that game it was possible to lose a mission and make up for it later on because defeat in battle didnít mean an overall loss as long as you were conservative with resources and had acquired enough by the end of the game. If they can capture the same sort of feel I am definitely in.

So what are the 'system seller' games for this thing? I've got a non-3D XL and thought about trading up to the 3D version but didn't really see a game that would have made it worth while. Are there any such games currently out or in the pipeline?  icon_neutral

I have a pretty big collection of 3DS games.

Here are favorites for the system

Super Mario 3D Land 9/10
Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars 8/10
New Super Mario Bros.s 2 8/10
Resident Evil: Revelations  8/10
Pushmo 8/10 (Anyone who owns a 3DS and doesn't pick this up from the eShop should feel bad)

Good games that are either flawed or only going to appeal to certain people

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance 7/10
Final Fantasy: Theatre Rhythm 7/10
Mario Kart 7 7/10
Cave Story 3D 7/10
Mighty Switch Force 7/10
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 7/10 (I know most people love this one)

Games that I love but have one fatal flaw

Kid Icarus: Uprising 6/10 ( I want to love this game; it does everything I like in a game but the controls are complete rubbish)
Starfox 64 3D 6/10 (I love the game but it’s just too short to pay full price)

Games to pick up for $10 or less

Pilot Wings Resort 5/10
Steel Diver 5/10

As for upcoming games

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Animal Crossing 3DS
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning

Finished this tonight. An excellent game that I enjoyed from start to finish. I really dont have anything negative to say about the game; it's just an all around great experience. Maybe a slightly longer ending would have been nice but I thought it was clever and appropriate.

New game plus mode also makes you feel like a complete badass. Even though enemies will pretty-much one shot you in new game+ you get to keep all your upgrades from the game so you can do things that were impossible in your first play-though. I ended up replaying the first three levels after finishing the game just because it was so fun being able to stealth run past enemies while paragliding between buildings with the end game upgrades.

Quote
The publisher also revealed a few dozen other titles that will be available in the Wii U's "launch window," which spans from November 18 to the end of March 2013.

Also, there are now over 50 games announced for the launch window.

As for the price, while I don't think it's that unreasonable if they had priced each version $50 less they could have dominated the Christmas rush market.  The $300+ price range is a whole different (mental) price bracket and is going to change a lot of impulse buys to wait and see buyers.

I'm about 5 levels in now and it has already become one of my favorite titles of the year.  I think the thing I love most is that it rewards stealthy play heavily but it never punishes you if you screw up and have to kill a couple people; you just get less rewards in the end.  Nothing aggravates me more in a stealth game then when setting off an alarm results in instant failure.

I think anyone serious about putting their game on Steam can muster $100 to do so.  However, if their goal was to just weed out bad submissions a $10 fee would have done just as well.

They need to rethink the thumbs down button though.  If 10,000 people say they will buy a game on steam does it really matter if 5,000 say they wonít?  I will never buy a sports game but that doesnít mean I think they shouldnít be sold on Steam.  Itís just a way for people to show spite to a game they donít like.
783  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: September 06, 2012, 07:41:11 PM
Well, Iíve unlocked every level in the game.  I figure about 10-12 hours to unlock everything except the silly 1 million coin goal.  There are six main worlds, two special worlds you have to unlock by finding secret exits plus star world that you unlock once you beat the main game and collect the right number of star coins.

And if anyone is curious what the reward for 1 million coins is well here you go!
Spoiler for Hiden:

Here are the Wii U listings from VDP's website:

WIIU SYSTEM – GM – 11/11/12 $249.99
WIIU SYSTEM W/ – GM – 11/11/12 $299.99
WIIU SYSTEM 349 W/ – GM – 11/11/12 $349.99

Seems pretty realistic.  The official announcement is supposed to be made next week so it’s also reasonable that some retailers might have gotten the word early.  If they do release at $250.00 I wouldn’t be too hesitant about picking one up on release day.

As I understand it, any version of Amalur that isn't sold by Steam is Origin-only.

Sadly true.  I really donít know if it will ever be on sale on Steam.  I donít think EA owns the rights to the Steam version since they self-published and since the company imploded I donít think there is anyone to authorize a sale.
789  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: August 29, 2012, 03:30:14 PM
I recently finished world 3 and the game has grown on me a bit more than when I started.  The first world really doesn’t sell the game very well and is just a complete retread of past games.  While not a revolution in the series the later levels do actually offer some interesting new mechanics and also look considerably better than the early areas.

A growing problem I do see is the game seems pretty short.  If I had to guess based on my own playtime I would estimate that the whole thing could be unlocked and finished in about 6 hours (probably a lot less if you knew where all the secrets were).  This sadly puts it on par with the length of Super Mario Land 3DS.
790  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: August 25, 2012, 11:40:48 PM
Played it about an hour.  It’s exactly what you would expect from the title, more of the same.  That’s not a bad thing but it would be nice to see some innovation.

A disappointment is that the supposed hitch of the game, collecting coins, appears to be completely pointless.  A shame since Nintendo has already shown that they can make a meta game like that interesting.  In the Wario games on the original Gameboy they actually had a mechanic where the ending you got was based on the wealth you stole throughout the game (Wario could end up with everything from a birdhouse to a palace).  As far as I can tell there is nothing like that here.

I also find it amusing that this is the worst showing of 3D on the system I’ve seen.  It’s like they didn’t even try, instead of the typical layered look turning on the 3D slider just blurs the background.  I don’t really care about 3D but a strange choice from a first party title.

Iím one of about two people who hated Nightmare.  Iíve seen it three times because it perplexes me how everyone seems to enjoy it except me.  The first was as a kid in theaters where I hated it.  Again in college when I figured it had to be better than I remembered but ended up finding it horridly unpleasant.  And finally a few months ago when I fell asleep halfway through out of boredom.

There were a couple scenes I liked in Corpse Bride but that one is very far down on my list of movies Iíll ever watch again.

I saw the trailer for Frankenweenie in front of the Dark Night Rises and got horrible flashbacks to Nightmare so I think I will sit this one out and let the rest of you enjoy your weird unpleasant movies.   icon_razz

I actually enjoyed Force Unleashed a lot aside from one or two awful level, so if itís at least as good as that I will be content.
