(Cross posted impressions)
Well I spent a few hours playing tonight and I am actually a bit mixed on impressions.

The first this is the game is very disorienting to a typical RTS player, or at least to me.  No base building and centralized unit production just feels wrong to me.  Also, having to level up a squad to add more members feels like a bit of a step backwards from DoW.  The limited production facilities also come into play with the thing I like the least.  Map Control.  We played a game that lasted a good 35 minutes because we couldn’t produce enough units fast enough to hold an entire map.  Given that assaulting bases is also harder you are often forced to do a map control victory.  Gone are the days of epic victories, instead you seem to chip away at your enemy.

A big disappointment is I hate the new ork voices.  The original voice actors were humorous and endearing; most of the new orks are just annoying.  The rest of the race voices are fine.

Only four races might seem like a step down from nine but each hero plays differently so you are essentially getting 12 races.  I do wonder about balance as each hero also has 9 different upgrades they can take.

Game play in general actually feels slower although it demands more of your attention.  Cover and special abilities play a HUGE role now.  I like this.

Tyranids are scary to fight against but confusing to play as.

Graphics look great but given the amount of people dropped from online games because of poor performance this could be a negative for many.

Most of my impressions are based on playing with someone who doesn’t play RTS games so tactical depth impressions will need to wait.  She did enjoy blowing up people with her Ork heroes self destruct ability though, so any of you with wives/girlfriends get them to play, and make um Orky!

Wow, this is NOTHING like Dawn of War.  My poor elves just got brutalized by the big metal meanies.

I’ll post some impressions in a little while but first I want to try the Tyrranids.   icon_biggrin

Go to your games tab and click on Activate a product on steam.  Type in your CD key.  The game will start to download from steam but you can cancel it.

Instead of deleting it why not try to edit it and remove your phone number? I don’t think craigslist allows for duplicate entries.

You guys don’t have enough icons on your desktops.  It’s shameful.    Tongue

I hate having icons on my desktop period. Mine are always turned off. It makes it look like a total mess.

What’s the point of having a desktop if you don’t use it?  I hate opening the start menu, most days I don’t have to.  My icons form a perfect one icon thick border all the way around my screen.

1451  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games with awesome dialogue? on: January 08, 2009, 09:15:30 PM
The Soul Reaver games really are my highpoint as well.  I especially liked the extras included with Legacy of Kain: Defiance which let you view the recording sessions. But it made me sad to learn the guy who played the elder god died.

Some others:
System Shock 2
Dawn of War for the most part up through Dark Crusade.  Dialogue in Soul Storm was terrible though.

well, it's a known fact that the Canadian Goose is a slower flyer than the Japanese Dragon, and the goose require far more maintenance at feeding time whereas the dragon can scoop up any bovine or other equine (or even porcine) mammal quite easily.

I hate the new facebook.  No one I knew used more than one or two apps so the old system never bothered me.  The new one seems tacky and more favorable for people who like to stalk your every movement.

Some quick picks:

1) Crysis and Crysis Warhead: Good for pushing graphic cards to their limits.  I really enjoyed both games as well.
5) Stalker: Clear Sky.  With all graphics set to max, makes my SLI GPU's cry.  Haven’t gotten far into the game, so can’t comment on how fun it is.

Crysis turns into a slideshow at max settings on my rather high-end system.  Clear Sky while not quite as bad still turns choppy at max in any area that really shows off the lighting effects.

Assassin's Creed and Fallout3 both run beautifully at max on my computer.  Both are still very attractive though.

Three years ago that would have had me really excited but it just seems too spammy and simplistic.  Dawn of War still seems like its superior and it’s a four year old game.  Also, the announcers were really annoying.

That said I’m a hypocrite and will probably buy it anyways.  icon_twisted

as is the abba thing, oddly enough.

and "Iceland has research facilities?" = resistance 2?  don't spoil me if that's tied to the game somehow, but otherwise, i have no idea what it could be.

hope it's a good deal though.

It should be Resistance 2.

EDIT:  Looks like it's already gone....what did it sell for?  I wish I had waited instead of buying that garbage at release.

Price should still be listed but… Gold Box Price: $49.98    (37% off) for the collector’s edition. Sold out in about 15 minutes.

1466  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is Blu-Ray here to stay? on: December 13, 2008, 09:54:20 PM
I think it really depends on the size of your set.  I have a 32 inch 720p and from 8 feet away I can tell a difference but it’s not ground breaking.  Comparatively a 45+ 1080p set from 10 feet away is WOW.

From what I’ve read the biggest hold up for Blu-Ray and HD sets in general is most people can’t “fit” the widescreen sets in their current entertainment centers.  Additionally, even though widescreen sets have more onscreen room they still appear smaller to most people because they are not as tall and non widescreen content doesn’t fill the whole screen without being stretched.

1471  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Dungeon Keeper MMO or Holy Crap turns to Aw, crap. on: December 02, 2008, 06:51:59 AM
I actually think an MMO version of Dungeon Keeper Gameplay could be really interesting.    My big problem with MMOS is you put so much time into your character but no one really every pays attention to them.  If your character was a primarily your dungeon that you could decorate anyway you wanted and then have it invaded by other dungeon keepers it could make the whole thing more meaningful.

Basic idea would be build your Dungeon as in Dungeon Keeper or Evil Genius and then have a 2nd mode similar to Overlord where you went out and tried to steal from/capture/destroy other peoples dungeons.  Your heroes equipment would be based on what you could make in your dungeon and the minions you take with you would be based on those that lived there.

I can dream right?

My families’ cat had 8 toes on one front paw and 6 on the other (5 and 5 in back).  It was more of a folding action than a thumb but she could pick things up with only one hand.  Only problem was she seemed to get stuck on things more than normal cats because the claws went in too many directions.

Also, two more serious entries.  While not great literature I enjoyed both Liberties Crusade and Speed of Darkness from the StarCraft universe.  Liberties Crusade is fun novelization of Terran fall while Speed of Darkness is an offshoot that is infinitely better written.  Both are worth a look though.  Just stay away from Shadow of the Xel’Naga, its god-awful bad.

All stuff from Amazon

How did you get heavenly sword for $10?  I saw it listed on Amazon for $20.  For $10 I would have grabbed it.

I was really let down by Hellboy 2... I liked the first one a lot, though I thought it could've done more... the second one just didn't seem like it was in the same universe... the story was convoluted and kind of cheesy, a lot of the wit of the first movie was missing, it didn't have the same heart.  Thinking back now to when I saw it (in theaters) I'm having a really hard time remembering what happened, while I could tell you the entire story in Hellboy I without skipping a beat.

I thought I was the only one that felt that way.  The big difference for me seemed to be that despite how outlandish some of the elements were Hellboy was still very much grounded in reality.  Hellboy II seemed to all but throw this out.

And while I can understand the actor wanting to get recognition I was disappointed that David Hyde Peirce didn’t reprise his role as the voice of Abe.  I thought he was PERFECT.
