1445  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Video Stuttering Bluray on: February 10, 2009, 11:25:45 PM
All other disks read fine that’s really the reason I am puzzled.  The strangest difference is I have a couple TV shows on bluray and they don’t have the problem but all full length movies do.  I don’t know how blurays work…do they switch “tracks” half way through perhaps?
1446  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Video Stuttering Bluray on: February 10, 2009, 08:01:31 PM
No switcher, plugs directly in.
1447  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 Video Stuttering Bluray on: February 10, 2009, 05:27:07 PM
This is a problem I’ve started to notice more and more now that I have more Blurays.  About once per movie the video in a movie will slow down and move at about 2/3 normal speed.  This usually goes on for about 5-10 seconds and then is fine.  The problem only happens with bluray movies, normal DVD’s and games are fine.

I tried searching Google but I couldn’t find mention of this anywhere.  Does anyone else have this problem?
1448  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Computer Responding Extremely Slowly on: February 09, 2009, 04:27:30 AM
Well the problem returned.  While the Trojan probably wasn’t helping I don’t think it was the cause.  Thinking about what Scraper said I opened up the computer and tried starting with only the main hard drive plugged in.  Doing so everything was running fine so I came to the conclusion that that drive is failing.

Funny thing is when I plugged it back in restarted to finish backing up and everything is running great again.  Now I’m not sure if it was just a loose connection or if there is a more serious problem.  Does anyone know a good testing application to tell if a drive is failing?

Glad to hear its coming.  I hope they don’t make it too dark though.  The silliness of the original is one of the reasons I loved it so much.

1453  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Penumbra- any impressions? on: February 06, 2009, 08:08:15 PM
I played the original and I have to say there is a creepiness to it that I haven’t experienced in many games.  The way you interact with the world adds a lot to that.  In most first person games opening a door is just clicking a button and it magically swings open.  Having to stay there and push or pull them makes you feel vulnerable especially when you never know what’s on the other side.  The same goes for every other aspect of the game.  Most of the time the enemies aren’t that bad, it’s the anticipation for them that gets you.
1454  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Computer Responding Extremely Slowly on: February 02, 2009, 08:45:12 PM
It was Trojan-Clicker.HTML.IFrame.dn

Technical details

This Trojan opens web links without the knowledge or consent of the user. It is an HTML file. The file is 483 bytes in size.

Not sure why that would cause the problems it did but they seem to have stopped now.
I use Nod32.

Thanks guys.  The Kaspersky found a Trojan that everything else had missed.  Everything seems to be back to what it was, I was able to start TF2 and the program lag is gone.  I’m going to run SuperAntiSpyware anyways just to be sure.

Malwarebytes found three tracking cookies and two registry entries.

Thanks, I ran the program and it did find a couple files.  The mouse sluggishness has vanished but programs still seem to be running slow.  Also, Steam games still won’t launch.
The only thing I’ve installed recently was the demo for Drakensang.
1457  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Computer Responding Extremely Slowly (Updated Problem) on: February 02, 2009, 05:09:33 AM
This problem first popped up yesterday but at the time wasn’t causing many problems so I thought it would just go away.  Anyways I first started to notice sluggish responses from games on Steam; my mouse would often take a second or two to catch up.  Today the sluggish mouse has returned, I can’t start games on Steam at all, and normal applications are taking upwards of 30 seconds to start.

I’ve already run my own virus scanner, ad aware, and even tried submitting a hijackthis log but nothing has shown up as being wrong.

I’m running Vista 32 bit and have never had a problem like this.  Any ideas?

Every once in a while I see an ad for this game and today I saw it listed in Steam as coming soon.  Does anyone know much about it?  I haven’t seen any real coverage but it sounds interesting.
From what I gather its a 3rd person sneaker where you play a female assassin during WWII.  I believe that it’s supposed to be based on a true story as well.

1464  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Disable copying of images in email? on: January 28, 2009, 11:29:15 PM
This is a long shot since I don’t believe it is possible but does anyone know a way of disabling images from being copied in emails?  I was given the task today by a client but I’m not optimistic.

I’ve even tried “disable-right-click” scripts, which I know don’t really work, but they don’t work at all in email it seems.

Maybe I’m remembering wrong but didn’t the original have lean left/right options?  As I was playing not being able to was the thing that bugged me the most.
Pretty impressive overall though.

1467  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dawn of War 2 - [beta impressions included] on: January 23, 2009, 06:38:40 AM
Some additional Eldar impressions.

Initially I wasn’t impressed with what had become of my Pointy Eared Friends but after experimenting I’ve learned that Farseer Map Reveal + Webway ability = really annoyed opponents. Eldar are actually even better at hit and run attacks now, although people are going to consider the play style incredibly cowardly. Basically the key to winning with them is to only stay in a fight long enough to have enough points to open another Webway. It amounts to killing one squad and then running. If you keep it up you can bounce around the map capturing victory points indefinitely.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that rangers are the most important unit in the Elder army. Rangers instantly suppress squads and can hold off large numbers by themselves. The only weakness to this seems to be Tyranids and jump troops.

I’ve won my last three games since figuring these two things out. Works especially well if you have two ally meat shields that can hold a line while you’re out pestering the enemy.

Beyond Good and Evil
Super Mario World
Mario Kart

I just got the game and am enjoying it quite a bit but… damn do I ever die a lot.  In two hours I bet I fell to my death at least 60 times.  Comparatively I was shot to death maybe 7…

My biggest problem is if I’m trying to jump and grab something and come up a little short she will usually grab the object.  But if I jump out too far she will not; resulting in some weirdness where the camera seems to go through an object.  Makes me wonder if Grace is really Rayman and has hands but no arms.

1471  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dawn of War 2 - First detailed info? on: January 21, 2009, 07:43:54 AM
Leveling up has different effects on different squads.  I am an Eldar Veteran from DoW so I stuck primarily with them.  You DO get better weapon option as your squads level but you also get to add some units.  As you said this is normally a leader but I was able to add two “leaders” to my banshee squads after a certain point.

Heroes can carry three items, one per column, but I believe I was able to switch them out as I wanted, it just meant repurchasing them.

Probably my favorite addition is that you can use hero spells on allies.  I was able to use “guide” on an Ork squad at one point and it seemed to make a big difference.  I also like that vehicles take more damage from behind.  I pulled off some interesting maneuvers using this fact.

(Cross posted impressions)
Well I spent a few hours playing tonight and I am actually a bit mixed on impressions.

The first this is the game is very disorienting to a typical RTS player, or at least to me.  No base building and centralized unit production just feels wrong to me.  Also, having to level up a squad to add more members feels like a bit of a step backwards from DoW.  The limited production facilities also come into play with the thing I like the least.  Map Control.  We played a game that lasted a good 35 minutes because we couldn’t produce enough units fast enough to hold an entire map.  Given that assaulting bases is also harder you are often forced to do a map control victory.  Gone are the days of epic victories, instead you seem to chip away at your enemy.

A big disappointment is I hate the new ork voices.  The original voice actors were humorous and endearing; most of the new orks are just annoying.  The rest of the race voices are fine.

Only four races might seem like a step down from nine but each hero plays differently so you are essentially getting 12 races.  I do wonder about balance as each hero also has 9 different upgrades they can take.

Game play in general actually feels slower although it demands more of your attention.  Cover and special abilities play a HUGE role now.  I like this.

Tyranids are scary to fight against but confusing to play as.

Graphics look great but given the amount of people dropped from online games because of poor performance this could be a negative for many.

Most of my impressions are based on playing with someone who doesn’t play RTS games so tactical depth impressions will need to wait.  She did enjoy blowing up people with her Ork heroes self destruct ability though, so any of you with wives/girlfriends get them to play, and make um Orky!

I hate having icons on my desktop period. Mine are always turned off. It makes it look like a total mess.

What’s the point of having a desktop if you don’t use it?  I hate opening the start menu, most days I don’t have to.  My icons form a perfect one icon thick border all the way around my screen.
