1441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout: New Vegas - Impressions Incoming! on: October 19, 2010, 06:27:43 PM

Just received my collector's edition.

I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the components.  While not as visually impressive as the lunchbox from F3 everything feels well made.  The chips have some real weight to them and the big one is actually made of metal.

The playing cards feature numerous designs for both the front and back of the cards giving it the look of a deck that was pieced together from a number of different casinos.

The graphic novel is hardcover bound with very nice artwork.

The CD key activated flawlessly on Steam and is now downloading.

Enjoy a couple pictures!

I got FableII yesterday but I was just able to grab the DLC so that seems to still be working at least.

1447  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Expansion coming for Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising on: August 21, 2010, 05:02:18 PM
I'm amazed people try to use the Librarian and actually succeed.  I played through Chaos Rising twice, once alone as a pure party and once in Co-Op going full corrupt and both time I thought the Librarian was all but useless.  Ironically I found a corrupt Librarian slightly more valuable than the pure one; clearly Chaos really is the only true answer.

If you guys haven't tried it yet I would highly recommend trying out the Co-op at a higher difficulty.  At first only controlling two squad members each will feel strange but once you get in sync with your ally you will discover just how much more efficient you can be in a fight when all four squads are microed 100% of the time.

Also, for people who don't normally replay in this type of game, there are actually three different endings(+5 different mid-game differences) based on your party actions throughout the game.  They aren't huge but might give you incentive to play at least twice.
1448  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Irrational: and the new game is..... Bioshock: Infinite on: August 13, 2010, 06:13:15 PM
I loved System Shock 2, enjoyed Bioshock but thought Bioshock 2 was unnecessary and quite dull for the first 2/3 of the game.  To its credit I thought the last third of the game was really well done but the rest felt like filler.  I will remain skeptical on this one until more information is known.

To be frank, from what I've seen so far they're basically about to rehash Warcraft 3's story in Starcraft.

How can SC2 rip off WarIII?  WarIII more or less ripped off the story from StarCraft 1.  icon_biggrin

Also one thing I am thankful that Blizzard stole from Rise of Legends is the grid style hot key system.  I hoping that since a few more people will play SC2 than RoL, grid style hotkeys will become a standard option in all RTS's going forward.

If you don't mind editing a text file you can remap your keys in DoW2 now.

1453  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Web Hosting Question on: June 30, 2010, 07:09:21 PM
I'm a fan of Bluehost.  I've set up a dozen or so sites with them.  If you start to get a lot of traffic, say 40,000 a month or so you may start to have trouble but otherwise I think its a great reasonably priced host.
1454  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Re: For Sale: Band of Brothers (Blu-Ray) on: June 21, 2010, 04:43:29 PM
Not trying to belittle your thread but Amazon had this on sale for $35 just about a month ago which might account for limited interest.

It's gone back up now but Amazon regularly sells blurays for 60% or more off just a couple months after release which I think really hurts the resale market on these forums.

Many of those have been that price for a while.  I've found it's never worth spending more than $15 on any Blu Ray because Amazon will put it on sale for that within two months of its release.

Its kinda sad, but its their own damn fault. They took away one of the beloved mechanics of the game, in an obvious effort to streamline it (i.e. dumb down) the game for console gamers, namely the purchasing of weapons. Now, you just find them.

I played around with the Demo. In the PC version at-least you can buy and upgrade weapons at special locations.  The controls just felt off to me though, I think I would have to wait for a really cheap sale.
1460  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tron: Evolution on: May 20, 2010, 12:46:43 AM
Tron2.0 was awesome and felt like a family friendly (albeit simplified) System Shock 2.  This looks pretty but doesn't look like it will include any of the things that made 2.0 special.

Pizzahut is actually the cheapest place around here if you use coupons liberally.  I Recommend and order online, some coupons stack and you can regularly save 4-5 dollars.

Sadly I find Pizza Hut food inviting until I actually have it and then I feel sick.

Will this play on a Win7 / GTX 260 system? Or do you need DX11?

Notice: Shattered Horizon requires DirectX 10, a DirectX 10 compatible video card, and Windows Vista or Windows 7. There is no support for Windows XP or DirectX 9.

There are no bots that I have ever seen.  Considering the complexity of the controls it would probably be hard to implement them fairly.

Having some mixed feelings with the new weapons.  On the one hand they are very fun. Going into Silent Running Mode ( You don't show up on the radar or have lights on. Because dead bodies float around as well you basically turn invisible) with the shotgun and sneaking up on people is great fun but they all seem clunkier.  the old weapons were very streamlined, there was no need for a HUD because you could easily how much ammo remained right on your gun.  There also seems to be some overlap.  The new rail gun is a one-shot kill but the old sniper scope for your rifle was almost as good and didn't limit you to a very specific weapon.  These impressions are based on a very limited amount of playtime though so its still too early to tell.
1464  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: [Steam] Shattered Horizon 25% off on: May 05, 2010, 07:18:53 PM
I actually enjoy Shattered Horizon quite a bit but that seems rather expensive considering they have put it on sale for less than $10 twice since December.

Still it's a fun very different FPS. Just don't give up if you don't get it right off, the learning curve is much higher than a standard first person shooter.

I cant comment on the quality of the PC version but I had a blast with the PS3 version. Was actually the first PS3 game I played all the way through.  The story is easily the games strongest suit but the game play is fun once you figure out some combos to beat the harder foes.

A word of warning; the junk planet is easily the worst level in the game and I think it's the 2nd one.  Once you get there you will probably want to quit but it get loads better after that.  Stick with it and it is easily worth $15.

A bit of a self promotion since I've done work for the company but might be perfect for some of the people in this thread.  They specialize in making bikes for tall and heavyset riders.  It's a small company but the owner works hard to address any issues or questions customers might have.

Some of us regulars are looking for people interested in playing some Free For Alls or just multiplayer in general.  The FFA mode is a great way for people who are inexperienced with the game to play with those who are without feeling overly pressured.  We tend to use Skype for voice communication so if you have that as well feel free to join us.

Also, since some people may not know; all people who own DoWII can play with people who purchased the new expansion so you don't need to feel left out if you don't have it.

If you're interested post your Steam names here and when you're usually available.
1472  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anyone here work from home? on: March 25, 2010, 11:20:04 PM
I work from home; my office is actually in another state so I don't get to the office very often.  As nice as it is to roll out of bed and be at work it also have the problem of when you roll out of bed you are at work.  I actually find myself working a lot more than I would if I had to leave the house and at hours that I normally wouldn't.  The worst thing for me is some weeks I feel like I never see another person.  Not quite true but when you work 8 hours from home, feel worn out, and since you're already home you don't really feel like going anywhere else.
1473  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: C&C DRM question on: March 22, 2010, 11:13:24 PM
Well the ending is up on Youtube.  Even though it's not completely successful I like what they were trying to do with the storyline but judging by the other comments I'm in the minority.

Spoilers obviously

Spoiler for Hiden:
The storyline works best if you go by the hints throughout the series that Kane is the original Cain from genesis.  He's been alive for a very long time and every time he is killed he is just regenerated as punishment.  The whole purpose of the C&C series has been his attempts to break the cycle.  Basically he's tired of living on earth.  The Brotherhood of Nod was just a means to an end to "transcend" and every time GDI defeated him it resulted in him seeking more desperate measures.

In the GDI ending Kane tells the protagonist that even if he is killed he will just come back over and over to raise an army, repeating the cycle of endless war on earth.

In the Nod ending Kane seems almost sad when he tells the protagonist that "You were too fragile.  You're all (humanity) so fragile."

I would be up for some FFA tonight if any new players were up for it.  The rest of us regulars played a couple FFA's a couple nights ago and it was a lot of fun and the chaotic nature tends to even the playfield even if you don't know the game that well.

Cross Posted from OO

Well I just finished the Chaos Rising Campaign. Very well put together. It doesn't have as many side missions as the original but all are meaningful this time around. You do get a few instances where you choose where to deploy but unless you fail a mission more than once you can still make it to each.

Having seen how the campaign goes I think it's highly like that the next race will be a combined inquisition force instead of just Imperial Guard.

Ending Spoilers

Spoiler for Hiden:
The game ends on a cliffhanger! Argh! Very cool to find out that the Chapter Master of the Blood Ravens is a follower of Chaos. The previous games have hinted at it for a while so it's nice to have it revealed.

Strange, I think I found all but two in America.  The Tank and the Boomer.  Pretty sure Greenland is the last location no matter what though.  Also, pretty sure the locations don't scale so if you save USA for last it will be really easy.

Go to America as soon as possible.  Most of the special undead are found there and they make dealing with armed people much easier.
