That’s tempting…I just got a new HDTV today and would like a blue ray player….not sure if I can afford that on top of it in my current budget though.  Hmm.

Yes I read this BUT the form says to base this information on earnings in 2007, which I don’t have, so I don’t understand how I am supposed to set this up.

You are not required to make quarterly estimated payments, but you will still owe the same tax burden at the end of the year. Your contract employer will report your income to the IRS on form 1099, and you'll have to pay self-employment taxes as well as income taxes on 1099 income. Since the IRS has no basis year to compute your expected obligation, you can choose between smoothing it out quarterly or giving it to them all in one big lump next April. Assuming that you're disciplined about such things, your smartest strategy would be to compute your quarterly obligations, then pay that money into an interest-bearing account that you will drain next April. If you are less disciplined, you probably ought to make the quarterly payments to avoid having one obscenely huge bill next year (and yes, don't forget to check your state's rules, too).

The Bride of Ironrod earns 1099 income in very irregular chunks. Every time she gets a freelance check, I take out 25% for the feds and 5% for the state. Four times a year, I send in whatever I've withheld during the previous quarter. This method works out pretty accurately for us. Depending on your overall deductions, your effective percentage rate might be higher or lower than that.

Welcome to the joys of the 1040 long form and Schedules A, C and SE. Besides 1099 income, we also have wage income and corporate profits to account for. Tax season is a major ordeal when you aren't a wage slave.   finger

Thank you Ironrod; that clears up quite a lot.

Seems like a lot of extra stress for a first time job...of course setting my own hours and working for home makes up for it.  icon_smile

Edit – that seemed rude – thanks to you too KC! - Edit

1445  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Tax Question (first time worker) on: June 21, 2008, 06:50:26 PM
I have only been working for a little over a month at my current job, I work on a by project basis.  They informed me that because I don’t work full time but still make over $400 I will have to file a 1040-ES form and pay quarterly.  They send me checks without taxes pre-taken out of them.

Looking at the form there is a line that says:
“Exception. You do not have to pay estimated tax for 2008 if you were a US Citizen or resident alien for all of 2007 and you had no tax liability for the full 12-month 2007 tax year. You had no tax liability for 2007 if your total tax was zero or you did not have to file.”

Everything on the form says I need reference 2007 but I never had an income because I was a student. I’m a little puzzled about what I’m supposed to do to file taxes this year.

I don't get cavities and root canals.

34, 1 cavity. You guys drinking sugar down there?

I have noticed that some people, no matter how dentally hygienic they are, seem to be afflicted by every possible dental horror.

I attribute it to past-life karma.  What awful people they must have been!

I don't know about the karma, but the first part is definitely true.  I brush and floss at least twice a day, and generally take very good care of my teeth.   Unfortunately, everyone in my family has bad dental problems.   Even when I was doing regular checkups, I don't ever remember a visit where I didn't need at least 1 filling.

23; had one cavity when I was pretty young and none since.  I make it to the dentist about once every 4 years and the only thing they tell me is that I should floss more.
My teeth are a bit crooked but aside from that they are awesome.

I’ll second craigslist, I’ve found a number of freelance jobs on there; although I suppose it depends what you majored in. I’m a recent grad myself, most of the people I know haven’t found work yet and its been a little over a month.

Luckily I did some work for an individual while still in college, he contacted me around graduation asking if I could fix a problem his company was having with one of their websites.  I corrected the problem in three hours and impressed the company’s board so much that I had a full time job a week after college graduation!

1465  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What should I know about buying a HDTV? on: May 24, 2008, 10:58:47 PM
I appreciate the responses.

Right now I don’t actually have anything that makes use of HD, but in the near future I can see that changing, especially since my 5 year old DVD player is making terrible clunking sounds on a regular basis.

Right now I have an Xbox (old) and a friend’s Wii, it would be nice to be able to use them from more than three feet away and not have to squint.  Obviously I want both to look as good as possible on my new TV.

This is the one I have been eyeing
1466  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What should I know about buying a HDTV? on: May 24, 2008, 04:45:34 AM
Well about two weeks ago I got my first real job out of college.  After living on about $5/day for the last four years I find myself in a much more comfortable position.  My boss loves the work I’m doing and one week pays my rent so things seem to be looking up.

Anyways, my current TV is an ageing 19 incher with fuzzy picture and fading audio and I would like to upgrade.  The thing is I don’t know anything about HD but at this point almost anything is better then what I have.  I don’t know much about cable/satellite either, my family could never afford it and I never really felt a need for it after I left home.  I didn’t even have a phone until two weeks ago when my employer said I was crazy and bought me a cell phone.

I don’t want to spend too much, paying off loans is much more important to me, but I don’t have a lot of other desires or expenses.  Within the next month/month and half I would like to find something.

Sooo…fill me in, what’s the best TV for around a grand and what do I need to know?

Yeah, it is.

Yes, it most definitely is.

If you are curious what it is like, it's kind of a Zelda clone when it comes to gameplay, but with a much more modern and interesting story and it's a bit more compact.

When the game first came out I was turned off by the childish looking graphics but on playing it quickly became one of my all time favorite games.  Offhand I really can’t think of anything that I didn’t like about the game; truly surprising and enjoyable.

But it’s worth it!  A week after college graduation and I’ve got a job!  A really nice one too, starting pay is almost double what anyone else in my family makes; my family is definitely on the lower income spectrum but I’m still in shock.

I’m still kind of waiting for something terrible to happen; my luck usually isn’t this good but until it does I’m pretty happy. I might not even have to live in a cardboard box!  Woohoo!   icon_smile

The closest arcade to me as a kid was a 20 minute drive away so I never got to play in the arcades much.  I do remember being taken out on one birthday where we played some X-men game from start to finish.  That was a fun day; I think the game was Children of the Atom or something like that.  Probably not on anyone else’s list but that would be my top!

It was a long day, mostly sad to think I won’t see many of these people after today and the ones I do will never be seen as a group again.  I had a rather small select group of friends so thinking about losing them is not a pleasant thought.

I was part of the Multimedia and Graphic Design program at Champlain College in Burlington Vermont.

Yep, the real world sucks.  You'll look back at your college years and remember them as some of the best of your life.

Maybe maybe not.  I’ve been working three jobs to pay for college since freshman year; my family couldn’t afford to help me at all so I have footed the bill from day one(I’m the first in my family to go to college, most family members didn’t graduate high school).  Hasn’t left much time for fun so the thought of having only one job and no schoolwork sounds great.

But thanks for all the congratulations!

22 days . Never found the bow. The chainsaw worked best for me till the end when my barracade fell and the thing would'nt start.

I found the bow twice in the 2nd location; the town in the middle of nowhere, not the city.

The bow might actually throw some people off because there is a slight pause between each shot but the fact that you are never get screwed over while your guy is reloading a whole clip more than makes up for it.  I actually find that pause helps me because it encourages me to aim for the face and get a lot more one shot kills, whereas I almost never find myself aiming with automatics.
