1321  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Chernobyl Diaries on: March 18, 2012, 04:24:42 AM
Iíve seen too many documentaries about people going to the real modern day Chernobyl.  While you could definitely make an awesome movie on the same subject that just looks silly.  In fact, the paranormal stuff they find is probably just as fake but if you have Netflix instant watch look for the episode of Destination Truth in which they go to Chernobyl.  At the very least they actually go to the site and the atmosphere is probably creepier than anything in the movie.

I only have about an hourís playtime but I have to say the presentation of the game is awesome. I love games that put you in control as opposed to watching the person in control and this game has that in spades. The last game that really gave me this feeling was Alpha Centauri.

Gameplay seems complex enough that I donít really know what Iím doing but not in a bad way.  The tutorial is rather vague at times, not to mention that the game throws you into the command seat and doesnít give you a tutorial until you start the first mission.  Graphics are gorgeous but the voice acting is not very good which is made worse by repetitive quotes.  Still, Iím very intrigued by the game.

On the negative side of things it took me three tries to get the game to even start.  The Ubisoft launcher failed to patch and was continuously crashing.
1323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: (PSN) Journey, from the makers of Flower on: March 16, 2012, 12:05:01 AM
Just completed (the) Journey.  While I feel that $15 for under 3 hours is a bit pricey I don't regret buying it at all.  Not really much can be said about it other than it's more of an experience than a game.  I was actually sad when my first "friend" got separated from me and I never saw him again.
1324  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III on: March 11, 2012, 03:44:58 AM
Actually, Iíve never played Diablo with random internet people, only with friends in closed games.  It never occurred to me that people would want to fight with other people.  Being a loot based game, skill wouldnít enter into the fight; whoever had played the most wins.

The ending... bad. Really bad. The game was so awesome and they fucked up the ending. Will never understand why people can't end things well.

The ending actually makes me angry.  So much so that it sours the whole series for me.

Probably an Origin exclusive. Better get your torches and pitchforks ready!  Torches and Happiness!

and every other building will probably need to be bought as DLC.  those nuclear reactors you saw in the trailer?  $3.50.
EA will charge you a penny per SimCity person. Overpopulation could be expensive!  smirk

May not be that far off.
1328  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Stronghold Kingdoms on: March 01, 2012, 03:50:46 PM
I tried this out with a friend the day it became available.  I love the idea but we both agreed that it failed in execution.  You have to fight the menu the entire time, parts of the tutorial are unclear and itís just not very fun to play.

Looks like each of those characters were simply Photoshopped out of a frame of their original films and slapped on that poster.
The more you look at that picture the worse it gets.  Johansson is about 3 feet tall and Captain America is at least 30 feet.  All of the heads look photoshoped onto the bodies except for Jackson but he is the only one without a light source on the left side of his face.
1331  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Be Mine Indie Bundle on: February 21, 2012, 07:16:16 PM
I picked this up a couple days ago.

The Ball is a pretty good Portal-lite type game.  It falls short of being a classic but itís still worth a look.

Sideways New York is a very cool concept but I warn you, itís pretty much unplayable without a gamepad.  I also found the soundtrack awful but your personal taste might differ.
1332  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: My friend's 4-hour stop-motion animation Lego film on: February 21, 2012, 07:12:25 PM
The animation quality is actually pretty great but the video quality and audio mixing could use some work.  Also, I made an hour long live action video for my college portfolio and people thought I was crazy.  4 hours?   icon_eek
1333  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning announced on: February 21, 2012, 07:02:15 PM
I think it depends how you try to play the game.  I came to the conclusion pretty early on that the developers never intended for you to play even half of the side quests in an area.  Instead you should pick up a couple and complete them on the way to the primary quest line.  Given how much better written and content intensive the main quests are I don’t think you would want to do anything else anyways.

The same could be said for the crafting skills.  If you do every quest in an area and salvage every item you find you will probably break the game but you’re also forcing your character to level up faster than they would with just the normal progression of the game.  Also, don’t over explore.  Creatures in a new area are set roughly to your level when you enter it the first time.  I’m not a fan of this convention but it’s better to know about it in advance.
1334  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning announced on: February 18, 2012, 08:21:24 PM
Just finished the House of Ballads and I’m curious about alternate endings.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I chose to rule alongside the Maid of Windermere despite her being the villain. Of the characters she seemed the most sympathetic; basically forced by fate to play the villain and always destined to lose. She chose to rise above the nature of her people and change her fate, which is admirable in my opinion.

Anyways, I think the Maid and I are married and co-ruling tyrants now. I also received the Iconoclast Twist of Fate card. I’m hoping the cards you receive are different based on your choices…

Better Off Ted comes to mind, although it made into at least part way into a second season.  Regardless, I'm including it anyway.
Not sure if you're aware but you can watch the complete second season on Netflix instant watch.  It was never aired or even released on DVD.

I donít mind that there are so many modern games but there are some really bizarre choices there.  Multiple Super Mario games? Force Unleashed II over the original?  Fallout 3 over New Vegas?  An Elderscrolls game?  The ending in those are so unsatisfying they always let you keep playing.   icon_razz

My impressionsÖ

Environments and character models look great but animations are weird.  Itís possible Iím not remembering ME2 properly but lip synching seems worse. Also, Femshep runs funny, kinda like she just got off a horse.
Story elements seem very strong and well done again.
Nice branching level up system.
Was nice to see Wrex in action again.

Origin breaks my internet and prevents any other devices from working while itís runningÖ
1338  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III on: February 11, 2012, 01:16:36 AM
I don't think the "not having to drink a potion" thing is really fair since they changed the dynamic of the game to include health orbs so that you wouldn't have to drink potions.  It makes me wonder if the difficulty is just a matter of perception.  If they removed health Orbs but but made twice as many potions drop would people say it was harder or the same?
1339  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning announced on: February 06, 2012, 11:17:36 PM
You didnít.  Or maybe you did; I guess that depends if EA or Valve takes a bigger piece of the revenue.  But they took a chance by releasing it on Steam and if no one buys it there they might not release their next game on the platform.  Either way Origin becomes more powerful and while I canít say for certain I highly doubt EA will continue to discount their games if they find people flocking to their service.

1340  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning announced on: February 06, 2012, 10:23:32 PM
Personally I thought it was worth an extra $9 to not have to use Origin.  The Steam version is the only one that doesnít register with Origin.  I also wanted to show support for the developer who chose to self-publish on Steam against EAís wishes.

Really really like the demo.  Itís like Gothic/Risen and Fable had a beautiful and polished baby.  I went from knowing nothing about it to considering a preorder.

Also, Iím still bitter that Mass Effect 3 wonít be on Steam so this made me smile.  "All PC versions of Reckoning, except for the Steam version, require a one-time authentication through Origin and the Origin client. If you purchase Reckoning through Steam, you only need to authenticate the game through Steam."

Alien Hallway has one of the worst trailers I've ever seen for a game.  From what I could tell you stand perfectly still while holding down the fire button and very SLOWLY kill enemies who walk into your bullets.

-edit- Oooo apparently it's supposed to be quasi tower-defense-ish.  I thought it was an action game... That may be an even bigger failing of the trailer.

1347  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Pushmo on: January 17, 2012, 10:47:26 PM
Just picked this up today after seeing all the positive reviews on Metacritic.  Pushmo takes a very simple concept (push + pull blocks to solve puzzles) and turns it into a very fun and addictive game. Along with basic platforming and pushing and pulling skills you also have the ability to reset the whole puzzle or rewind time if you screw but don’t need to start over.  The simple mechanics hide really complex solutions once you get past the tutorial levels.  I’m now to level 2 puzzles and it’s taking multiple tries to find a solution.

It's probably difficult to understand what type of game it is from just my impressions.  Check out the trailer.

Worth a look at $7.

Anyone else pick it up?

1349  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Halo Reach Collectorís Edition DLC on: January 11, 2012, 05:55:56 AM
Recently was given the Halo Reach Collectorís edition which comes with two sets of specialty DLC. I have no intention of playing the game online so it would be wasted on me. Iíve seen them go for ridiculous amounts of money on Ebay but I donít want to bother with that.

If you will legitimately use them make an offer and they are probably yours.

For clarification the items are:
Recon Helmet
Flaming Helmet
Elite Armor
Falcon Avatar

1352  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MagicKa - Diablo style Coop Mage Action :) on: December 27, 2011, 05:01:19 PM
I love Magicka but it's really not a single player game.  Most of the enjoyment comes from accidently doing something awesome and inadvertently exploding your friends in the process.

As an aside, "The Stars are Left" is recommended.  It's about 2-4 hours of content and includes a whole new story-line complete with in-game cut-scenes, lots of new humor and even some light puzzle solving.  It may also interest people to know that only one person in a group needs to own it to play.  However, in order to find all the new weapons you need to be wearing the robe that is only available if you do own the exspansion.

Yeah, who doesn't want a gift that says "I couldn't be bothered to pick something out for you, so go shopping yourself." I think they're ok for people that you don't know very well though.

Thatís a horrible way of looking at it.  If people insist on buying me a gift I feel much better knowing that it will be used for something I actually want instead of knowing they wasted money on something I will never use.

Bastion is my game of the year and there have been a lot of great games this year.  It just did everything right.  The narrative was compelling, the graphics were wonderful, the gameplay was fun and the world was unique and imaginative.  On top of all that it was also one of only a handful of games to ever pull off an emotionally charged storyline without coming across as corny or artificial.

you can now pre-purchase Trine 2 on Steam, and you'll get beta access to two levels of the game.
Just to be nitpicky, it's two multiplayer (co-op) levels of the game.  icon_smile

Basically the Beta should work quite well in multiplayer, and you can have others join and leave during a game session at any point.

that makes it souind like it is MP enabled but you can play it solo.

The beta is the first two levels of the full game.  Fully playable single-player.  Really fun in co-op but a bit buggy.  My general impression is that they did a much better job balancing the classes.  With Trine 1 I most just stuck with the Thief because she was highly mobile and better at combat than the Knight but all three have a lot more necessity this time around.
