I don't think the "not having to drink a potion" thing is really fair since they changed the dynamic of the game to include health orbs so that you wouldn't have to drink potions.  It makes me wonder if the difficulty is just a matter of perception.  If they removed health Orbs but but made twice as many potions drop would people say it was harder or the same?
1322  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning announced on: February 06, 2012, 11:17:36 PM
You didnít.  Or maybe you did; I guess that depends if EA or Valve takes a bigger piece of the revenue.  But they took a chance by releasing it on Steam and if no one buys it there they might not release their next game on the platform.  Either way Origin becomes more powerful and while I canít say for certain I highly doubt EA will continue to discount their games if they find people flocking to their service.

1323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning announced on: February 06, 2012, 10:23:32 PM
Personally I thought it was worth an extra $9 to not have to use Origin.  The Steam version is the only one that doesnít register with Origin.  I also wanted to show support for the developer who chose to self-publish on Steam against EAís wishes.

Really really like the demo.  Itís like Gothic/Risen and Fable had a beautiful and polished baby.  I went from knowing nothing about it to considering a preorder.

Also, Iím still bitter that Mass Effect 3 wonít be on Steam so this made me smile.  "All PC versions of Reckoning, except for the Steam version, require a one-time authentication through Origin and the Origin client. If you purchase Reckoning through Steam, you only need to authenticate the game through Steam."

Alien Hallway has one of the worst trailers I've ever seen for a game.  From what I could tell you stand perfectly still while holding down the fire button and very SLOWLY kill enemies who walk into your bullets.

-edit- Oooo apparently it's supposed to be quasi tower-defense-ish.  I thought it was an action game... That may be an even bigger failing of the trailer.

I was surprised to enjoy the first season but completely hated the second with the exception maybe 3 episodes.  Is season 3 more like the first or second season?

The Flaminí Spicy Chicken strips from KFC.

And a similar but less good item, the Chicken Kickers from Dominos.  The things they replaced them with are AWFUL.
1330  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Pushmo on: January 17, 2012, 10:47:26 PM
Just picked this up today after seeing all the positive reviews on Metacritic.  Pushmo takes a very simple concept (push + pull blocks to solve puzzles) and turns it into a very fun and addictive game. Along with basic platforming and pushing and pulling skills you also have the ability to reset the whole puzzle or rewind time if you screw but don’t need to start over.  The simple mechanics hide really complex solutions once you get past the tutorial levels.  I’m now to level 2 puzzles and it’s taking multiple tries to find a solution.

It's probably difficult to understand what type of game it is from just my impressions.  Check out the trailer.

Worth a look at $7.

Anyone else pick it up?

1332  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Halo Reach Collectorís Edition DLC on: January 11, 2012, 05:55:56 AM
Recently was given the Halo Reach Collectorís edition which comes with two sets of specialty DLC. I have no intention of playing the game online so it would be wasted on me. Iíve seen them go for ridiculous amounts of money on Ebay but I donít want to bother with that.

If you will legitimately use them make an offer and they are probably yours.

For clarification the items are:
Recon Helmet
Flaming Helmet
Elite Armor
Falcon Avatar

1335  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MagicKa - Diablo style Coop Mage Action :) on: December 27, 2011, 05:01:19 PM
I love Magicka but it's really not a single player game.  Most of the enjoyment comes from accidently doing something awesome and inadvertently exploding your friends in the process.

As an aside, "The Stars are Left" is recommended.  It's about 2-4 hours of content and includes a whole new story-line complete with in-game cut-scenes, lots of new humor and even some light puzzle solving.  It may also interest people to know that only one person in a group needs to own it to play.  However, in order to find all the new weapons you need to be wearing the robe that is only available if you do own the exspansion.

Yeah, who doesn't want a gift that says "I couldn't be bothered to pick something out for you, so go shopping yourself." I think they're ok for people that you don't know very well though.

Thatís a horrible way of looking at it.  If people insist on buying me a gift I feel much better knowing that it will be used for something I actually want instead of knowing they wasted money on something I will never use.

Bastion is my game of the year and there have been a lot of great games this year.  It just did everything right.  The narrative was compelling, the graphics were wonderful, the gameplay was fun and the world was unique and imaginative.  On top of all that it was also one of only a handful of games to ever pull off an emotionally charged storyline without coming across as corny or artificial.

you can now pre-purchase Trine 2 on Steam, and you'll get beta access to two levels of the game.
Just to be nitpicky, it's two multiplayer (co-op) levels of the game.  icon_smile

Basically the Beta should work quite well in multiplayer, and you can have others join and leave during a game session at any point.

that makes it souind like it is MP enabled but you can play it solo.

The beta is the first two levels of the full game.  Fully playable single-player.  Really fun in co-op but a bit buggy.  My general impression is that they did a much better job balancing the classes.  With Trine 1 I most just stuck with the Thief because she was highly mobile and better at combat than the Knight but all three have a lot more necessity this time around.

For instance, when Shaw/Schmidt first kills Erik/Magneto's mom so Erik rages and destroys a room and kills a couple guards, but then is just happy to have Shaw put his arm around him and doesn't even try to harm him.  He then dedicates the rest of his life to trying to kill him, instead of just taking the gun from him right then.  Or shoving the bell through his head.  Or crushing him with a table.  Or trying a single thing.

This I agree with.  It probably wouldn't have worked but he should have done something.

Quote from: EngineNo9 on October 23, 2011, 05:51:16 AM

Or when Magneto was first chasing that sub and getting pulled along in the water, why didn't he just use his powers to screw up the propellers?  Or open the hatch?  Or ground the sub?  Or shove that bigass anchor through it.  Or just crush the whole damn thing and stop the movie right there.

As it's shown later in the movie Magneto really hadn't mastered his powers yet.  He was good with manipulating small things but large objects like the satellite dish proved a problem.

Quote from: EngineNo9 on October 23, 2011, 05:51:16 AM

And near the end of the movie when the the ships are getting ready to shoot at the beach, why didn't Charles once again just take control of the captain of the ship and stop the orders like he had done five minutes before?
In the first encounter Charles had had a lot of time to seek the captain.  With his location changed and under stress of the situation it is believable that he wouldn't have been able to find him in time.

Quote from: EngineNo9 on October 23, 2011, 05:51:16 AM

Or in the end when Charles is watching Magneto get ready to shove the coin through that dude's head...the only reason Magneto could do that was because Charles had him in a mind-controlled trance!  Let him go for a second you fucktard. Or tell him to move.  Or anything other than letting your friend slowly shove a coin through his cranium.

I think the basic idea is that only the two of them together could actually stop the guy.  If Charles broke his focus then he would have been able to absorb the force of the coin and probably use it break free and kill Magneto.

DoWII Multiplayer is nothing like the single player so that wouldn't help much.
1348  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Deals Thread: Max Payne + THQ Week - Tomb Raider Sale - Baconing on: October 14, 2011, 07:28:06 PM
Chaos Rising is a more refined campaign than the original with a better storyline and none of the filler defend generic power node missions.  They also did away with most of the boss battles at the end of mission.  Personally, it’s my favorite of the three campaigns.

Retributions campaign is just a hair worse than the original campaign but it does have the most variety of the three when it comes to objectives.  As an added bonus you can complete the campaign as any of the races and each one has their own unique interparty dialogue and reasons for completing said missions.  The Ork campaign in particular is over the top awesome.  Retribution is also a standalone expansion that replaces GFWL with Steam so if you only want to play multiplayer that is the one to buy.

Here is a clip of the ending Ork cut scene from the first mission in Retribution.  Highly recommended viewing.

I'd be interested to know the percentage of D2 players who are actually dedicated enough to continue on after the base game and play the Hell and Nightmare modes.  Outside of the hardcore crowd (which many on here would fall into), my guess is that it's actually pretty small, at least compared to the total number of people who buy the game.

As a somewhat casual player who doesn't have any interest in playing at the higher levels or min-maxing builds, I think the skill system sounds very cool.
I really dislike the change to the skill system and I’m a casual player.  My favorite part of the game was leveling up and getting cool new abilities little by little, I really didn’t care about the loot.  With the new system there will be very little to drive me forward aside from new locations and story so they better be interesting!

If you really are a casual player, you will still have the same effect, getting cool new abilities little by little.  Approx. every level til 30 you'll get access to a new active skill (you don't get access to all of them at once if that was what you were thinking), and at 10/20/30 you can choose from a bank of passive skills.  At levels 6, 12, 18 and 24 you unlock another slot for an active skill.  My guess is it will be balanced so that a single/casual playthrough through the game will take you to around level 30 and unlock the entire basic skillset for a single class.

Check out the skill calculator:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/

But it's the skill upgrading I like.  Where is my ability to put 5 pts in skeleton upgrading so that I have 5 skeletons running around, one more every level? Or Whatever ability.  This just seems like you get the skill and then you're done.

I had to grind my way through Mass Effect 1.  Hated the Citadel and once I was able to leave I think I only came back once.  The characters were dull; the only two I liked were Tali and Wrex.  If it wasn't for the knowledge that Mass Effect 2 was coming out I never would have finished it.  And since someone will ask why I bothered with the sequel if I didn't enjoy the first; I played Dragon Age BEFORE playing Mass Effect and held it as one of the best RPG's I had played in many years.  My assumption was that ME2 would build on what I loved from DA.

While it was nothing like DA I loved Mass Effect 2 for the very first minutes.  The Citadel was finally fun and interesting, characters were unique and almost universally excellent and the world felt much more unique and alive.

I have between 5-10.  I don't really care about in-game DLC because you usually forget about it 10 minutes into the game but I do like hardcover art-books and well made collectibles.  I had stopped buying them for a while because I've switched over to only buying games on Steam but I was happy to see that the Fallout: New Vegas CE used Steam works so I'll probably get suckered into buying them again as more games pickup the trend.
