Divine Divinity 1 was isometric and Diablo-like except with an interactive environment and more RPG elements; I think it even had a pause option.  This sounds like they are returning to their roots.  Sounds great to me as I loved the original but never got into any of the sequels/semi sequels.

You can find a ton of games listed on the Specials tab on Steam.  I picked up Stacking.  Lots of other good stuff but I already own most of them.

Thatís disappointing to hear.  To be fair though, has there ever been a good ending to one of these games?  I think Gothic 1 might have been the best and it was merely OK.  Is the ending at least better than Risen 1?

Republique made it with 6 hours to spare!  Pretty impressive since they were only half funded a few days ago.

As far as the domain name itself , I'd grab a .com, .net and .org of something. As silly as it sounds, people tend assume .com for everything if they can't remember. You want the other two to forward to your actual space, even if you don't use the .com as your main space. It doesn't have to be your last name (mine, for example, is way too common), but you want it to be tasteful and easy to spell/say and remember (short).

This.  I work as a web-developer and .com is what you should take if at all possible.

Republique looks very interesting.  I pledged them $15 for the PC version.

sounds a bit like The Experiment.

Yep, definitely made me think of that as well.

They have just under 2 days left on their Kickstarter, and it's another one that seems to be coming down to the wire.  They have made huge progress in the last few days but are still ~$164k short of their goal.

I didn’t think they would make it but they’ve brought in almost $100,000 in the last two days so they might actually pull it off.  What is sad is their latest video is MUCH better than the one they started with and it only came out a couple days ago.  If they had started with it and planned the PC version from the start I don’t think they would have had any doubt reaching their goal.

Well, I guess I can eat my words.  Today's patch adds the ability to doge.  Still not up to Risen 1's standards but head and shoulders better!

Also fixes the flickering problems many users experienced.
1250  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Risen 2 on: May 09, 2012, 04:24:32 AM
I'm enjoying it but it definitely needs a bit of polish.  My biggest complaint is unlikely to ever get fixed though.  The combat of Risen 1 was just about perfect and I feel they really dumbed it down.
1251  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: May 06, 2012, 04:24:58 AM
Day one purchase for me.  I wish they would go back and recapture the feel of Super Mario World (SNES) though instead of Mario 3.  Something about the over world mechanic with multiple interconnected hidden areas was just so appealing and something I truly miss out of the more recent games.

I'm probably in the minority, but was completely underwhelmed by this game.  I have no idea what all the fuss was about.  It has a fairly unique retro graphics style and a decent soundtrack, but was boring as hell to play.

Also in the "don't get it" camp.
I played the first ďepisodeĒ the day I bought it and felt the same but I just went back to it on a whim and something clicked.  For me at least itís definitely a game where the longer you play it and the more you look for the hidden things in the environment the more you will enjoy it.

Not a bad concept. I mean, 4 resistance fighters on the run after the destruction of City 17, dealing with all sorts of half-life monsters and trying to make it to the next lambda room.
Now give one of the four members a portal gun and another a gravity gun and you've sold me.
1257  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Risen 2 on: April 28, 2012, 05:20:46 AM
I didnít play very long tonight but my initial impressions are that itís Risen 1 with pirates.  If you enjoyed Gothic/Gothic2/Risen then you will like this.  If you didnít this wonít change your mind.  Combat is a little different but itís still in the mold of the previous games.  You are supposed to suck at combat early on in these games; that is just how they are balanced.  Instead of invisible walls the games put enemies you have no hope of beating in your way to guide your where it wants you to go.  Spamming melee works against animals but it will get you killed against humans.

Other than that the interface is a little better than it was in Risen, the textures are better and the animations are a bit worse.  Story seems better as well but I havenít gotten far.

Too early to say for sure but I loved Risen 1.  That said these games will never have the wide appeal of say Skyrim.  Although, in my opinion they beat out the Elderscrolls games in every way possible except graphics.  I have it preordered.
1261  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: How the heck are you people playing all these games? on: April 22, 2012, 07:10:47 PM
I play games with the intent of finishing them.  The story/characters, setting and feeling of advancement is what I enjoy so I play most games on normal or if it’s a game where all difficulty does is make enemies have more HP I set it to easy.  I don't care about a challenge and I've never understood the the feeling of accomplishment people get from beating
hard" games.  If I get stuck I look up a solution.

That plus I haven’t watched normal TV in probably 3 years.

Seem to be able to res multiple times; at least on normal difficulty. Iíve never played a game of this type before but enjoying it more and more as I get further down; currently on level 4.  It reminds me most of Arx Fatalis, a game I loved.  I wish it had just a bit more story but for a $10 title thatís hardly a complaint.

I picked it up mostly because it was cheap but Iím liking it a lot more than I thought I would.  A few more hotkeys for map and quick save would have been nice but no big deal.  Is there any way to bring people back from the dead though?

Cross posting from OO since there seemed to be more interest here.
Someone traded me the Dead Kel DLC for a bunch of TF2 hats so Iíve got some impressions!

Since I have already finished the main campaign and pretty much maxed out my character as a mage I decided to respect entirely as a rogue. It would have been really nice if the DLC has raised the level cap a bit since Iím sitting at 39 but not much can be done there. The DLC can be done any time after level 10 provided youíve already made it to the human capital since thatís where it starts.

You meet up with a wonderfully incompetent shipís captain and soon find yourself marooned on a very hostile island. I highly recommend exhausting the captainsí dialogue options; many of the stories she tells are hilarious.

The basics of the DLC are mostly more of the same but this definitely feels much more fleshed out story and character wise than even the faction quests from the main game. Also, so far it seems like most of the Scottish speaking people are gone, replaced with mostly accent neutral voice actors. I bring it up because I know some people had a hard time taking the original actors seriously. Theyíve also expanded on the house ownership portion of the main game and have added some fun options for animal ownership and further improvements to your keep.

I canít speak for the length yet but the island seems pretty large and the scenery is very enjoyable to explore. Iím not sure itís worth $10 but it was definitely worth a bunch of hats.  $5 would probably be ideal.
1268  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anno 2070 on: April 04, 2012, 05:02:30 PM
Yep, I persevered past my previous wall as well.  Something to keep in mind as the missions go on is that itís in your best interest not to try to rush through the quest log.  If you do so and only build the bare minimum you are going to find yourself stuck later on because the missions keep your persistent bases.

I learned that the hard way in the last set of missions where I was able to complete an objective but didnít have enough income potential which completely screwed me when the enemy started attacking my trade ships as soon as the task was completed.

Stalker is open world and features wide open fire fights, exploring and quick save.  Metro is claustrophobic, linear and is check point save only.  I liked them both but Stalker quite a bit more.

I really loved Mount and Blade back when it was still in its beta and probably played 50+ hours with it.  Despite having purchased every iteration since I donít think Iíve played more than an hour or two total.  They really need to get a new engine and work on fixing some of fundamental problems instead of rehashing the game with a slightly different setting again.

I read Carrie last year having never seen the movie.  I remember a lot praise for the movie itself but when I finally watched it I was very disappointed because it didnít match the tone or message of the book at all.  I had the same problem with the Shining actually.  On their own they might be good or even great movies but they pale in comparison to the books theyíre based on.

So hereís me being hopeful for the new adaptation!

Crap!  Iím on the last set of missions in the campaign and things have become ridiculously complicated. I have 6 trade routes transferring goods between 4 islands and anytime there is a shortage of goods somewhere I get a feeling of dread while I try to rearrange supply lines.  Things were going great until the game insisted I keep both Eco and Tycoon civs happy at the highest tier AND build a large military force.

Looking at the complexity of the path of goods distribution I think Iím playing Spacechem nowÖ

The game has a "Works With Circle Pad Pro" logo on the box, but the only functionality is for lefties.

As Lordnine mentioned, there is an option to use the buttons in place of the stylus.  Why the hell did they not allow the CPP to be used in the same way?  This game would be great and comfortable to play!

Seriously?  I just assumed it would play perfectly with the Circle Pad Pro.  Does it only let you use it for movement instead of aiming?  If so that is a shameful missed opportunity.
1276  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anno 2070 on: March 28, 2012, 02:38:36 AM
An interesting update this week.  They just started a global multiplayer event.  Looks like everyone got three new free missions and everyone in the world is working together to achieve a goal.  As people complete the missions they earn points to a global pool and if enough points are raised everyone is rewarded with career points which you can reinvest into your faction for better upgrades and promotions.

Seems like a very cool way to incorporate multiplayer interaction into a single player game to add to the feel of being a faction architect.

Big image of the event.

Lengthy impressions cross posted with OO
Spoiler for Hiden:
I picked this one up because it was on sale for $30 on release day and Iím glad I did because aside from one serious flaw (Iíll get to that) this could be a system seller.  For those unfamiliar with the title it has almost nothing in common with its side scroller past.

The game is broken up into chapters with each chapter being composed of both a flight mission and a land mission.  The flying sections of the game are pure rail shooters; enemies fly at you and you shoot them while dodging projectiles.  These levels are really a joy to behold being fast, fun and quite pretty.  The land based sections feel like range focused Zelda.  You do have a melee attack but most enemies are easier dealt with from far away.  Oddly enough, despite the protagonist having wings there doesnít appear to be any way to jump.

The gameplay is energetic and fun and the story is delightfully cheesy and completely self-aware.  An interesting design decision that I love is the fact that the game features fully recorded audio and the characters NEVER stop talking.  The protagonist carries out conversations with his patron god or AI sidekicks you pick up as you travel and either fill in backstory or comment on things you encounter.
The game also features TONS of collectible items and equipment.  After the 2nd level you pick up about 5 different types of weapons and it looks like down the line you can upgrade them directly or even combine multiple weapons into super weapons.

Graphically the game is also excellent and looks on par with the best looking games on the Wii or even a little better.  In the flying sections the 3D is also quite good but it will likely to make you sick in the land based sections.
All this sounds good right?  WellÖone problem.  The controls, oh god the controls!   First off some personal bias.  I hate the stylus and any sort of motion/touch controls in general.  Unless the game uses touch controls exclusively, such as Professor Layton, I donít want them included at all!  The default control scheme for Kid Icarus fails here by requiring that you hold the 3DS with your left hand, use your left thumb for the joystick with your pointer for the trigger button while targeting enemies with the stylus in your right hand.  ARGHJSAKJHDSFJKSDFJK.

Now to the games credit that is just one of many control schemes that are available to you.  Most of the controls can be remapped and after fiddling with things a bit I found a solution that while not ideal is quite functional and makes it so I donít have to use the stylus at all.  Basically I changed it so that the buttons on the right control the camera like a second joystick and it works pretty well.

So my final thoughts:
If they ever end up bundling the game with the Circle Pad Pro or add a second joystick with a remodeled 3DS this is a must own.  Otherwise I would say your enjoyment will depend entirely on if you can look past the awkward controls.

I could live with ghost boy and the stupid 3 choices ending, if they actually showed me that all the work I did building alliances, scanning all the planets and getting all of the resources for that final fight mattered.
This is where I stand as well.  Many of my favorite game endings donít have spectacular visual endings but they reinforce the game by showing that your actions mattered.  Endings like in Fallout1/2/Vegas and Dragon Age all do this wonderfully and encourage additional play throughs.  The Mass Effect 3 felt more like the ending belonged in a straight up action game.
1280  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Indie Royale Ninja 'Lightning' Pack on: March 25, 2012, 05:55:46 AM
I picked this up.  The games all seem like fun and have some interesting ideas but they are clunky and lack polish.  Cloning Clyde defaults to a really low resolution and you actually need to edit an .ini file to change it.
Still, if you don’t mind some rough edges they are probably worth the money.
