So what does Launch Window mean?...because Aliens Colonial Marines is due for 360/PS3 in February,so how big is this window,or is the Wii U getting the title earlier?

The publisher also revealed a few dozen other titles that will be available in the Wii U's "launch window," which spans from November 18 to the end of March 2013.

Also, there are now over 50 games announced for the launch window.

As for the price, while I don't think it's that unreasonable if they had priced each version $50 less they could have dominated the Christmas rush market.  The $300+ price range is a whole different (mental) price bracket and is going to change a lot of impulse buys to wait and see buyers.

I'm about 5 levels in now and it has already become one of my favorite titles of the year.  I think the thing I love most is that it rewards stealthy play heavily but it never punishes you if you screw up and have to kill a couple people; you just get less rewards in the end.  Nothing aggravates me more in a stealth game then when setting off an alarm results in instant failure.

I think anyone serious about putting their game on Steam can muster $100 to do so.  However, if their goal was to just weed out bad submissions a $10 fee would have done just as well.

They need to rethink the thumbs down button though.  If 10,000 people say they will buy a game on steam does it really matter if 5,000 say they wonít?  I will never buy a sports game but that doesnít mean I think they shouldnít be sold on Steam.  Itís just a way for people to show spite to a game they donít like.
1209  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: September 06, 2012, 07:41:11 PM
Well, Iíve unlocked every level in the game.  I figure about 10-12 hours to unlock everything except the silly 1 million coin goal.  There are six main worlds, two special worlds you have to unlock by finding secret exits plus star world that you unlock once you beat the main game and collect the right number of star coins.

And if anyone is curious what the reward for 1 million coins is well here you go!

1210  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: September 04, 2012, 06:33:55 PM
A price may have been leaked.
Here are the Wii U listings from VDP's website:

WIIU SYSTEM – GM – 11/11/12 $249.99
WIIU SYSTEM W/ – GM – 11/11/12 $299.99
WIIU SYSTEM 349 W/ – GM – 11/11/12 $349.99

Seems pretty realistic.  The official announcement is supposed to be made next week so it’s also reasonable that some retailers might have gotten the word early.  If they do release at $250.00 I wouldn’t be too hesitant about picking one up on release day.

As I understand it, any version of Amalur that isn't sold by Steam is Origin-only.

Sadly true.  I really donít know if it will ever be on sale on Steam.  I donít think EA owns the rights to the Steam version since they self-published and since the company imploded I donít think there is anyone to authorize a sale.
1215  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: August 29, 2012, 03:30:14 PM
I recently finished world 3 and the game has grown on me a bit more than when I started.  The first world really doesn’t sell the game very well and is just a complete retread of past games.  While not a revolution in the series the later levels do actually offer some interesting new mechanics and also look considerably better than the early areas.

A growing problem I do see is the game seems pretty short.  If I had to guess based on my own playtime I would estimate that the whole thing could be unlocked and finished in about 6 hours (probably a lot less if you knew where all the secrets were).  This sadly puts it on par with the length of Super Mario Land 3DS.
1216  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 on: August 25, 2012, 11:40:48 PM
Played it about an hour.  It’s exactly what you would expect from the title, more of the same.  That’s not a bad thing but it would be nice to see some innovation.

A disappointment is that the supposed hitch of the game, collecting coins, appears to be completely pointless.  A shame since Nintendo has already shown that they can make a meta game like that interesting.  In the Wario games on the original Gameboy they actually had a mechanic where the ending you got was based on the wealth you stole throughout the game (Wario could end up with everything from a birdhouse to a palace).  As far as I can tell there is nothing like that here.

I also find it amusing that this is the worst showing of 3D on the system I’ve seen.  It’s like they didn’t even try, instead of the typical layered look turning on the 3D slider just blurs the background.  I don’t really care about 3D but a strange choice from a first party title.

Iím one of about two people who hated Nightmare.  Iíve seen it three times because it perplexes me how everyone seems to enjoy it except me.  The first was as a kid in theaters where I hated it.  Again in college when I figured it had to be better than I remembered but ended up finding it horridly unpleasant.  And finally a few months ago when I fell asleep halfway through out of boredom.

There were a couple scenes I liked in Corpse Bride but that one is very far down on my list of movies Iíll ever watch again.

I saw the trailer for Frankenweenie in front of the Dark Night Rises and got horrible flashbacks to Nightmare so I think I will sit this one out and let the rest of you enjoy your weird unpleasant movies.   icon_razz

How bad are the jaggies on 3D games?  I could never stand to play 3D games on the original DS because it was just too hideous. I assume itís nowhere near that bad but the thought of going back to worst graphics is not overly appealing.

If I had watched that not knowing what it was I never would have guessed that it was set in the Starwars universe.  A couple ship designs aside that could be any scifi setting.

I actually enjoyed Force Unleashed a lot aside from one or two awful level, so if itís at least as good as that I will be content.

I bought the PC version of this on Steam while it was on sale last week. It's the darnedest thing but... I hate this game. And not in a traditional way either, where the gameplay is so bad I can't stand to play it. I enjoyed the first hour, I thought the ship was cool and fun to fly, and the environments were sorta neat. But after another hour or so I realized I hate the "feeling" the game gives me, it reminds me of an Atari game and something about being reminded of that makes me hate the game.

I know it's short so I might plow my way through the rest, I'm in the icy/lasery portion of the map at the moment.

This makes me sound like a crazy man, doesn't it?
I can relate somewhat.  I didnít hate the game but having beaten it I enjoyed it far less at the end than when I started.  The graphics were attractive yet at the same time I found them a bit too alien which made me feel off while exploring.  I also found the mouse controls for guiding the rockets really annoying and there were a couple sections (including a couple boss battles) that were just pure frustration.

Overall I think itís a very good movie and a satisfying ending but itís actually my least favorite of the trilogy.  My problem is Bane really doesnít work as a villain, at least not the way he was portrayed in the movie.  There wasnít enough build up to him as a character and aside from his one big scene he never didnít anything that any old thug couldnít do.  As such I never felt like he was particularly threatening.

The rest of the cast did a great job and I think Hathaway gave the surprising standout performance in the movie.

1235  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC] Defense Grid 2 on: July 14, 2012, 04:08:37 PM
Doesn't surprise me.  Their credits state that they had a pretty large team to make the game(about 20 people).  I'm sure that some of them weren't full time but if you keep that many people employed for a year on a typical salary ($40,000+) and you end up with a very large number.  Figure in that a large chunk of their sales came about when they sold if for $2 on Steam and it starts to make sense.  Now factor in that they have continued to support the game for the last four years.

Further info from the developers.

Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer about 14 hours ago wrote:
Hi Adam, understand your skepticism based on things I read as well, but we're being completely up-front with you. First of all, Resurgence cost about $200,000 to develop and You Monster cost about $300,000 to develop, so DG:Containment at $250,000 is a pretty accurate estimation of what it will cost. AMD and Razer, remember aren't contributing any money, they're promoting the kickstarter, providing pledge rewards, and working with us on the new engine to make sure we support some of their existing and upcoming technologies Ė theyíre providing technical support on technology integration, but they arenít paying for any development of the game. We're being extremely efficient this time around not only building Containment in the first $250,000 but also making progress on the DG2 engine during that time.

As for your second question about "could we honestly not get funding" it pains me to hear that, not because I don't agree with you, that it should be "obvious" that someone would pick it up, but honestly over 20 publishers have expressed interest over the last 3 years and we did literally a hundred or more presentations and meetings, and term sheets, and everything, and in the end, not one publisher went forward. They were always excited at first, they were always eager and liked the idea of working with us, and they always decided not to move forward when they did their market analysis saying "it wouldn't be profitable enough, for them to choose to work on it" - they needed higher profits than they could forecast based on what we would earn for the game for them to decide to do it.

I'm sorry you think we have another choice - we don't. We really want to make DG2, but I'm pretty sure we have exhausted every other possibility over the last 3 years in trying to get this game made.
1236  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC] Defense Grid 2 on: July 13, 2012, 10:39:57 PM
From the developers themselves.

We put everything we had into Defense Grid; we wanted the game to be able to reach a lot of people, and looking back we probably sold the game at too low a price.  It paid for itís cost, but not enough for us to make DG2 on our own.  It takes a lot of money to make games (especially ones with 3d art instead of 2d sprites). We've been pitching it for several years but it's not f2p social (where the money is now in small games), or AAA (where the money is in big games). We still think there's enough interest to be successful, but that's what we're finding out by doing a Kickstarter.

Copies of DG1: On Steam there are about 500,000 players, there are about 50,000 other PC copies not on Steam, and there are about 200,000 Xbox 360 players.

There is no way they could have added the second stick.  As you said it would fracture the market and they are too savvy for that.

Actually, I donít think it would splinter the market much at all.  The types of games that would benefit from it the most are already being made by larger studios and already put multiple control schemes into their games (Resident Evil, Kid Icarus, etc).  This means they would have the time/money to optimize their games for both layouts.  Games from smaller studios would do what they are now, design games that donít rely on a second control stick.   Having two control sticks doesn't mean every game has to use them but if gives freedom to designers that want to go the extra mile to support them.

WiiMotion Plus is an entirely different case because you use motion controls for multiple actions so there is no alternative to it within games.  Either the game works or it doesnít.

The question is does anyone care about the 3D?  The only game I really used it on was Ghost Recon because it made the various levels of the battlefield pop out so you could better judge distance on your weapons and abilities.
As for the graphics I think it will depend.  2D games will look blurrier and 3D games will be jaggier.
1240  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Nintendo 3DS LL (XL in the States) Announced on: July 02, 2012, 06:48:49 PM
You may actually be right.  That wasn’t my understanding of how the system was being made but I found this.

ppi = pixels per inch
GBA = 97 ppi

GBA Micro = 144 ppi

DS Lite =107 ppi

DSi = 98 ppi

DSi XL = 76 ppi

3DS = 132 ppi

3DS XL = 96 ppi

So running DS games should look almost identical.
