OO Server is up and running at the original IP address.
1082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: February 01, 2011, 06:09:08 PM
OO transfer is taking slightly longer than expected.  I'll post here when its finished.  If you would like access to the new world when it opens please send me a PM here and I'll be happy to let you in.
Some OO'ers have been beta testing the new server.  Here is the spawn location of the new world!
1083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: January 31, 2011, 09:17:37 PM
Well Chris has the new OO server running so I think 6pm eastern time is going to be the cutoff point for making changes to the old. The new server has a nice blend of biomes with the spawn point being in an arctic zone.

Carry over request list looks like this currently.

Castle Noventia (Chris/lordnine)
Fortress Duncan (msduncan)
Lava Vegas (Skafe)
The Crystal Palace (Mold Maker)
The Cake Shoppe (Turtle)
The Picnic shelter of DEATH (Madmarcus)
Utter Madness (Archinerd)
Harold
Archinerd's Pet Sheep

Am I missing anyone?

The OO Server has grown to the size that it's eating through hardware resources right and left and most of the map is unused; only having been filled out because people explored for hundreds of miles in random directions.  Because of this many of the new resources such as the blue stone, proper biomes and the new trees are extremely rare or nonexistent.

Certain members have requested a complete server refresh and we are considering it.  We think it would be possible for old users to transfer over ONE building to the new server if requested but otherwise this would be a full refresh.

If you have land on the OO server please voice your opinion if you would like to see this happen and if you would like to transfer a main base.  This would also be a great opportunity for new people to join the server as the world would be new again.

Server restored.  As it turns out you CAN restart the computer remotely.  Now you can all stop being productive at work and get back to mining.    icon_wink

Update OO Server: I remotely logged into the server computer.  It appears that it has hard-locked/crashed.  Sadly, I'm going to have to wait for Chris to reboot it because I'm on the opposite side of the country.

Weird.  We tried to boost the memory of the server a couple days ago because it was eating through the 1.5 gig we had allocated for it.  I wonder if we broke something...  Will check into it.

That reminds me.  the last time i checked, i was able to log in but my friend couldn't.

There shouldn't be any problems there.  We've only blacklisted one person and pretty sure it wasn't your friend.  I would say have recheck the IP address.  Sometimes when you copy/paste it doesn't work.

We've have about 5 new people join the OO server in the last week so here is a new map.

I had this happen a couple months ago when I placed a couple small orders.  The bank told me that it's the smaller transactions that raise red flags because people who try to steal numbers do so with instantly processed online transactions.
1091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: January 20, 2011, 06:47:12 PM
You CAN do that but I think the problem is that it can be hard to find your exit portal.  It's possible that one of them will open above a cliff in the hell world or hidden behind various forms of obstruction.

Regardless I can't wait till they're introduced into multiplayer.  Our server has grown to the size that some peoples projects are more than 2 days apart walking distance.

All that DLC stuff is just for the single player, so don't worry too much about it.

meh - I only play singleplayer...and I'm annoyed by it.. I hope it will be the same as I've seen before in Denmark, in that due to lack of different retailers, we get it all from Gamestop in one package.

All the DLC wargear is being sold on Steam after release so I doubt it will be offered unless you buy the collectors edition.  Considering all the wargear drops from the first two campaigns I doubt the items will stay viable long after starting anyways so I wouldn't dwell on it much.
1093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: January 18, 2011, 12:37:48 AM
Tree's need a specific level of light to grow and I believe 6 free spaces above them.  A great thing about the newest update is it made it a lot easier to test if your trees will grow.  Go kill a couple skeletons and use the bone-meal to grow your trees to full height instantly.

I get 'the image "http://ninthhaven.com/OO_Jan2010.jpg" cannot be displayed, because it contains errors' when I click on it.

Try refreshing.  It loads almost instantly in Firefox but does tend to freak out in Chrome.

I think you have the option of the Wanderers Server or the OO server.  I sent you access information to the OO server if you want to join in.  While everyone is welcome please don't post the IP address directly in the forum; we would like to dissuade griefers from ever gaining access.
1098  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: January 14, 2011, 09:57:09 PM
I would agree about the atmosphere but since I consider Minecraft to be just a big box of Legos for adults this isn't really a draw for me.  As for things not working the only thing I can think of that hasn't been fixed/implemented in multiplayer is portals to hell.

The thing I noticed quickly is that when I played in single player I built everything simple and practical.  Since I was the only one who would ever see what I built there was no incentive to make things "impressive".  Because of this mining quickly lost its appeal because I knew I wasn't really going to use the materials anyways and I quickly became bored.

Multiplayer has been a whole different story.  I've constructed or helped construct giant rollercoaster's, palatial castles, mass transit systems and Redstone machines that do everything from lighting to locking doors and running simple traps.

Again, I agree this comes down to personal preference but I enjoy the majestic scale of multiplayer and would recommend giving your options a try before you settle for one or the other.
1099  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: January 14, 2011, 08:59:54 PM
If you want to work outside at night build some fences.  They look a single block tall but are actually 1.5 so most monsters cant jump over them.  It used to be that none would but with this last update they gave spiders the ability to climb walls.

Also, while it comes down to personal preference which you like better I would highly recommend joining one of the multiplayer servers to play.  There is just something so much more satisfying about being able to share the things you've built with others.

The super structure we started a couple weeks ago finally has a roof!

At five levels tall the floors of the castle alone constitute over 33,000 pieces of cobblestone.  We effectively emptied our total stone storage and even borrowed a bit from Turtle.  Now the fun part... decorating.
1101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My weekend was assassinated by Minecraft on: January 04, 2011, 10:43:32 PM
If anyone is interested in branching out I co-run the OO server and we welcome new comers.  Access is by invite only but as long as you are a member of good standing from either GT or OO you will probably be allowed in.  We have about 10 regulars plus another 15 or so occasional players.  Check out our world map here.

This is a no-mod survival server.  The only change we have made is player pvp is turned off.
Send me a PM here or on Octopus Overlords if you want to know more.

I wanted to like this show and watched the entire first season, but in the end I have to give it thumbs down.  I generally liked the plot and the supporting cast was great but I HATE the two leads.  Every episode I wanted to see something horrible happen to them and then hand the show over to the tech girl and the guy in charge.

Just received my collector's edition.

I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the components.  While not as visually impressive as the lunchbox from F3 everything feels well made.  The chips have some real weight to them and the big one is actually made of metal.

The playing cards feature numerous designs for both the front and back of the cards giving it the look of a deck that was pieced together from a number of different casinos.

The graphic novel is hardcover bound with very nice artwork.

The CD key activated flawlessly on Steam and is now downloading.

Enjoy a couple pictures!

1112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Expansion coming for Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising on: August 21, 2010, 05:02:18 PM
I'm amazed people try to use the Librarian and actually succeed.  I played through Chaos Rising twice, once alone as a pure party and once in Co-Op going full corrupt and both time I thought the Librarian was all but useless.  Ironically I found a corrupt Librarian slightly more valuable than the pure one; clearly Chaos really is the only true answer.

If you guys haven't tried it yet I would highly recommend trying out the Co-op at a higher difficulty.  At first only controlling two squad members each will feel strange but once you get in sync with your ally you will discover just how much more efficient you can be in a fight when all four squads are microed 100% of the time.

Also, for people who don't normally replay in this type of game, there are actually three different endings(+5 different mid-game differences) based on your party actions throughout the game.  They aren't huge but might give you incentive to play at least twice.
1113  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Irrational: and the new game is..... Bioshock: Infinite on: August 13, 2010, 06:13:15 PM
I loved System Shock 2, enjoyed Bioshock but thought Bioshock 2 was unnecessary and quite dull for the first 2/3 of the game.  To its credit I thought the last third of the game was really well done but the rest felt like filler.  I will remain skeptical on this one until more information is known.

To be frank, from what I've seen so far they're basically about to rehash Warcraft 3's story in Starcraft.

How can SC2 rip off WarIII?  WarIII more or less ripped off the story from StarCraft 1.  icon_biggrin

Also one thing I am thankful that Blizzard stole from Rise of Legends is the grid style hot key system.  I hoping that since a few more people will play SC2 than RoL, grid style hotkeys will become a standard option in all RTS's going forward.

If you don't mind editing a text file you can remap your keys in DoW2 now.

1118  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Web Hosting Question on: June 30, 2010, 07:09:21 PM
I'm a fan of Bluehost.  I've set up a dozen or so sites with them.  If you start to get a lot of traffic, say 40,000 a month or so you may start to have trouble but otherwise I think its a great reasonably priced host.
1119  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Re: For Sale: Band of Brothers (Blu-Ray) on: June 21, 2010, 04:43:29 PM
Not trying to belittle your thread but Amazon had this on sale for $35 just about a month ago which might account for limited interest.

It's gone back up now but Amazon regularly sells blurays for 60% or more off just a couple months after release which I think really hurts the resale market on these forums.
