Cool post, ritt.  I'm well aware of it's flaws as well, and indeed there is a nice list of them at this point.
Despite that, it is without question one of the best overall video-games I have ever played - period.  
With the inordinate amount of shit that is released to gamers on a weekly basis, to think ArenaNet could stuff so many amazing things into one game, and have it be this stellar, is mind-boggling.
In every aspect that matters (to me) - Guild Wars 2 is magnificent.

Hep... I had no idea that was you!  Ariel is my Ranger.  Had so much fun before I had to go.  We would have been better off doing some light skirmish stuff.  The zerg gave us a good pounding!  Too funny.

This game is absolutely awesome!

Yesterday early morning before going to work, I log in for about 2 hours.  I'm hanging out in the Human area at the farm with all the cows.  My keyboard is acting up, so I decide to clean it.  Soon, from the caves to the north comes a group of bandits to raid the farm.  I'm in no position to help really, and decide to just see what happens.  About 2-3 minutes go by, and a group of players come running in from the east.  I'd say around a dozen characters.  I had my view looking out about eye level from an Asura.  Just watching the fight as a bystander from basically eye-level (which I never really do) was the coolest thing.  Magic was flying everywhere, blue lights from the Guardians, purple from the mesmers, and fire and lightning from the Elementalists.  The two characters that clearly stood out from the dozen were a human mage in air attunement and a huge char mesmer wielding two longswords.  I seriously just sat there like I was watching an action scene from a movie or something.  I have never been into magic-type characters when I play these games (I prefer thief types) - but I can't tell you how awesome it was to watch that battle with all the effects going off.

After it was over, the dozen or so people kind of hung out for a few minutes, and then headed as one to a cave where they downed a big troll.  I went back to cleaning my keyboard just amazed at how engrossing this game can be, and I did absolutely nothing but watch.

The funniest thing about all these videos to me is how often they talk about how hard the game is; yet I don't recall ever seeing more than one guy die in any given mission.

It's pretty rare when I absolutely hate a game.  I'm a pretty forgiving gamer for the most part.  The exception to that rule is sports games, where I tend to be overly critical.  On the other hand, I generally don't gush completely either.  Even the Homeworld Series and some of the amazing 2kSports Basketball titles from 2007 on, I usually find something that bothers me eventually.  But I have to say I simply can't say enough positive things about Guild Wars 2.  For a genre that has basically worn out it's welcome with so many people (even me to a certain degree I guess) - I'm finding this game to be flat outstanding.  Since Saturday, I get home from work and can not get changed and settle in front of the PC fast enough.  To say the game has it's hooks in me is an understatement.  I love playing my Sylvari ranger and Asura thief equally, and really the only upsetting thing for me is that I can't play them both at the same time.  icon_wink

From a WvW standpoint, it's just too much fun.  But honestly, I knew that was going to rock from the betas, so I'm not completely surprised how great it is.  It's the primary reason I wanted the game.  It's from the pve standpoint that I'm so blown away though.  I am constantly finding new areas to explore that I miss with one character and then accidently find with another.  The rewarding exploration component of this game can not be expressed in words.  Now granted, I love the art style and the stupid little attention to detail everywhere, which makes it much more satisfying than it may for others that don't pay attention to things like that.  But I've never been a task oriented player in games like this - so the idea of going from heart to heart to heart on a predetermined path to fill them in and move on to the next area is not something I even remotely think about.  Basically, I just wander around (especially with my asura, cause I love to watch the silliness of his running animations) and just go places that look cool or interesting, often getting in way over my head.  It is a total blast.

So, I am proud to say I am officially gushing over Guild Wars 2 - and at this point at least, can not imagine wanting more from the game.  Arenanet really hit this one out of the park, and I think the 5 year development time (or whatever it was) really, really paid off.

Scraper: I suppose that is a valid concern. It also leads into another big positive for me.  End game content is likely XX hours into the game. Considering how many dozens and dozens of hours one will have played to reach that (assuming the ride there is enjoyable), the fun/hrs. played/game cost is off the charts for this game.

It may be the savior of mmo's until people get tired of it and move on, just like everything else.  That being said, for me it's just about the perfect game.  The pvp and combat mechanic is fun, the stupid little mini games like keg brawl are addictingly fun, the classes are well thought out, the game rewards explorer-types, you get experience for just about anything you do, the world is extremely expansive, the personal stories are actually good, the crafting is rewarding, and there is no monthly fee.  Pretty much hits every note for me.

OK, after reading that article I've completely changed my tune.  I love the way they are going to do it.  Still would have preferred a co-op mode, but the way they implemented "versus" sounds perfect (and fun) to me.  Thumbs up.

For those considering this title, you may want to keep an eye on this Space Sector preview, especially the comments at the bottom.


Then again, some of our own folks will have the game soon enough, and hopefully will give us their thoughts.

4x Space Strategy is easily one of my favorite type of games, so I'm certainly not trying to discourage anyone from buying this - just wanting to give a head's up.  Sounds like they are patching away, which is a good sign at least.

Do you guys have any guesses on what they are going to announce for multiplayer features?  We all know mp is going to be worked in somehow, but afaik they are still keeping it hush hush.  Any guesses?

The only mp tbs game with tactical-like combat I remember is Gladius for the xbox and ps2.  If memory serves, you had one person host - who did all the moving around and such, and the other person was given control of some of the squad in tactical combat portions of the game.  I'm hoping this is a bit more sophisticated than that, but I'm not really sure how they would do it.  Of course, if you join a "campaign" together, and each own your own base and ships and soldiers, well, that would be cool as heck.  OTOH, if they just have tactical maps for deathmatches against other people's squads, well, that would not interest me all that much.

You know... short of Homeworld 3 being released (yeah, right), I'm not sure there is a game that could have me more excited than this.  I simply can not stand waiting for it's release.  October is going to be so, so awesome.

My very first soldier will be CK - and he will go down in flames gloriously.  I will of course AAR the whole thing for everyone to enjoy along with me.   Tongue

Roguetad: Ranger pets are not created equal, that's for sure.  Bear in mind the following is from a person who got to a whopping level 13 as a Ranger, so someone like Cov. might have more accurate info.  But I found that something like a Brown Bear will live through quite a bit more than say a feline pet.  A Moa bird falling somewhere in between.  Things like Ravens seem to engage quickly and do pretty great damage, but I don't think they'll win any survivability contests.  In my short time playing with a pet, I feel their greatest "strength" is their special abilities though.  I treated there triggerable (is that a word?) abilities as another skill on my skill bar.  And some are pretty freaking good.  As far as holding aggro, overall on the lower level stuff they could do it without any problem at all.  I don't know if that scales as you get into the higher level mobs, but one could theorize that it does, as pets level with you.

Just started playing bw3 this morning.  I had originally no desire to play a silvari, but I have got to say they did a pretty awesome job with this race.  Both the character creation options and the creatures you fight against are pretty amazing.

Yep, got it as part of the sale as well.  Very surprised how much fun I'm having with it.  I'd probably rate the game much higher than most.  Love the NPC's you can bring with you.  Really like the story.  Voice recognition is hit or miss.  Like the cover system and the feel of the gunplay a whole lot.  Overall, it's been a great purchase per dollar spent.  Big thumbs up from me.

I think I read somewhere that the devs are currently working on a 1v1 skirmish mode as well, and that the A.I. is their current hurdle in getting that up and ready in time for release. I have been following a few space games developments lately though, so I could be mixing it up with something else. At any rate, all someone has to do is mention Homeworld, and my interest level goes up 100%. Keeping an eye on this for sure.

Floaty was a problem in Guild Wars and it hasn't gone away in GW2. I always attributed it to the game engine itself, but what do I know? I can relate to having friends that aren't digging the game as well. In fact, they dont like it at all. Personally, if I only played the early content I may agree. But I think the game gets substantially better as the enemies get tougher and smarter, which doesn't happen for a while.  PvP being another strength of the game for the same reason imo - fewer skills than most mmo's with much more intricate combat based on how those skills tie together.  I noticed this particularly with Thief - where weapon choice can really change things up.  I'm convinced my friends just aren't giving the game enough time.  Immersion I can't really speak to, but if its not popping your toaster, then it's just not.  I get that.
