5521  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rainbow Six - Black Arrow on: July 26, 2004, 01:41:40 PM
I just realized this is in the wrong forum.

I never even look at Road to Gold.... so I forgot it was there.

My apologies.

I put a 4 day restriction on when each round needs to be played by.

Possibly, when the initial 4 days are up, the 2nd round opens?

Don't know.

Again, that's why this is a test tournament.

If I am correct however, round two should open Monday or Tuesday.

Let me know if you find out anything.

I just watched a video of this.

Who is down for some Rainbow Six multiplayer Co-Op once this baby is released?

Driver... I know you have to be down with this... right!?!

Loren / Ron - What's the release date of this, do you know for sure?  I heard around first week in August, but I am not sure how solid that is.

This link is for you Devil... so you can at least do a bit of homework before blindly saying "IN"    biggrin

http://xbox.gamespy.com/xbox/tom-clancys-rainbow-six-3-black-arrow/527782p1.html

Here's an excerpt regarding the new and improved A.I.

Previously, if you walked into a room full of baddies, most of them would simply run for cover and fire at you from their entrenched positions. Now, it seems like every enemy has a different tactic. Some will run for cover, while others will try to sneak around and flank you and your men. This might not seem like much, until you consider that every time you start a new game or load a previous mission, all of the enemies in the level are randomly generated, each with a different type of A.I. than the previous time you played. So, if you enter a hallway and expect Enemy A to hide behind a barrel and shoot at you while Enemy B charges your men, since that's what they did the last time you went through, you'll be in for a rude awakening./

...   ...   ...   ...   ...

Or, check out the following excerpt from the game's first review:

The other little surprise up Ubisoft's sleeve is the clan support, or as they'll be known in Black Arrow squads. Players and their friends will be able to design their own squad and add people from their friends list. The squads have their own insignias, tags and much more, and because of this in-built sense of community, they'll be able to take part in tournaments and pre-arranged matches with other squads. "Isn't that going to be a little tough to organise?" we hear you say. Well, no. No more faffing around with linking gamertags to Xbox.com, no transatlantic phone conversations and no excuses. Each squad will have its own Inbox that will be able to receive messages from other Live players (text based, or voice mail). Each team will have the ability to arrange matches via the Xbox Live menu within the game, and then will be able to check a calendar of events to see when the next match is. The level of support for team-based matches in Black Arrow is, quite frankly, frightening, and this is perhaps the most innovative and brilliant addition to the series.

I just had a game with Caveman and NOW remember why I don't play as my beloved Dolphins online.

When I lose with the Raiders, it's like... "Oh darn.  I lost.  Bummer.  Next."

When I lose with Miami....  I think I just set a swearing record in how many swear words a person can say in the course of 5 minutes.

Great game Caveman...

Redskins 14

Dolphins  13

That was a tremendous game!

I honestly don't know what poor defensive teams are going to do against the Vikings.  It seemed like you drove up and down the field at will (to me).

The only reason the score was so close was because my drives took so long.

What a finish though!!!!!!  I did NOT plan on running Gannon like that.  I wanted to hit Brown on a cross, but you were all over that!

You deserved that win.

Great game!

Hey Devil -

Did you see where Ricky Williams announced his retirement?

Is my luck REALLY that bad with the NFL teams I like?

I mean, the Dolphins, Steelers, and Raiders... wouldn't you think ONE of those teams would not disappoint me year after year?

See, this again proves you're smarter than me.

The Eagles and Patriots are much less frustrating to follow.

I am now depressed.  Maybe I should smoke some hash and retire!

OK.  This one takes the cake:

TML and I gear up to play a great game.  We finally figure out how to hook up, chat for awhile, and decide this is going to be great fun.  I state to him I am leary of the ESPN server stability until they fix it, and with my luck, we'll be lucky to make it into the 3rd quarter.

READY FOR THIS ?

I run one play.  ONE MOTHER F***ING PLAY.

Disconnect!

I was credited with the win with a grand total of 3 yards rushing.

I am cursed!

Sorry about that TML.  I would GLADLY forfeit and let you continue if I could.

Sega/VC/ESPN can't fix these servers fast enough as far as I'm concerned.  I'm glad they are aware of the problems and working on a patch!

I KNEW it was a good idea to do a practice run!

TML -  I am going online now for awhile.  Maybe I'll see you on there.

Funny story.  I played against your VIP earlier today cause I couldn't get into a real game.  This was before the brackets were set, so that is kinda funny.  Anyway, I played on 9 minute quarters.  This is no lie, the final score was 10 - 9.   If our real game is that defensive, I will laugh.  In 36 minutes of game time, we had a total of 17 first downs between us.  You picked me off 4 freakin' times!!!!

Can't wait to play "for real".

Allright.

It is set up.

The easiest way to find it (there are LOTS of tournaments to wade through) is to do this:

1.  Go to Leagues

2.  Hit Join Tournament

3.  Hit the Black Button to do a search

4.  Type in con

5.  It should bring up the consolegold t1 tournament

6.  Password is gold

That should do it.

Should be fun to test it out.  Hopefully we get 8 people.

I have absolutely no clue how it works.  (that's the idea of doing a dry run   ) so don't bother asking me.

Oh, if anyone cares, I took the Raiders, of course.

O.K.

I have quickly browsed through the Creating of a Tournament process on Live.  I have not really examined it well though.

If this thing is as easy to set up as Links, I think we should do a really quick 8 man tournament or something, just for shits and giggles, to try and test it out.

If anyone knows the minute details in setting up/joining one of these, feel free to share.

Unless someone beats me to it (and by all means feel free to do this if you want to), I will create a small 8-man tournament when I get home from work today.  The first 8 people to sign up will participate.  It won't count for bragging rights or anything like that.  It will simply be a way to 'test the waters' for the Real Tournament that Eco is setting up.

If you decide to set it up before I get home, why don't you do this:

Name of Tournament:   consolegold t1
Password:  gold
Type: Private
Participants:  8

Now, I don't remember if the Admin. of the tournament has to send out invites necessarily, or if any would-be participant  simply needs to go into the Join Tournament screen and type in the name and password to join it.

It should be very easy to get 8 willing gg/cg test subjects to try this thing out though, wouldn't you think?

Thoughts?

I believe when I was messing around with the Tournament Creation, that you can either have a 16 or 20 man tournament (you can have different #'s of course, but these two are the closest to where we stand right now).

As of this post, I think we have somewhere around 17 or 18.

We should at some point discuss a starting date for this.

If we decide to begin the official Console Gold Season on August 20th, and we want to do the Tournament as a warm-up, we can do that.

I'm sure Eco is on top of this.

OK.  So here is an idea... we'll see if it goes over well or bombs.

I know I enjoy reading about games between Console Golders / Gone Golders when we play each other.  One, because we all "know" each other, and two, because they are fun to read.

So, if you have any games you've played against fellow forum members, and feel like typing up how they went, those writeups can go in this thread.

--  --  --  --  --  --

I'll even start.  (but please don't follow my lead in writing style, I am pretty useless at writeups)

RAIDERS  (Lockdown)
at
BROWNS  (Denoginizer)

All default All-Pro settings at 5 minute quarters.

My memory totally sucks, but I do remember the final score was 23-17 Raiders victory.  Warren Sapp had a great game defensively, sacking Garcia twice and having 5 tackles while totally dominating the line of scrimmage.  That really set the tone for the entire game.

First drive, Raiders hit a streaking Jerry Rice (i think) for a quick touchdown to go up 7-0.  Denoginizer followed this with an incredibly well executed drive, some 80 yards or more, on like 12 plays, picking the Raider defense apart.  He hit numerous crucial 3rd down conversions, and just dominated the Raider secondary.  Kellen Winslow Jr. couldn't be stopped.  7-7.  I ended up having to double team him to force Denoginizer to throw to his wideouts, who actually dropped some balls.

The rest of the game went back and forth, literally, however the Browns never actually took the lead (i don't think).  Denoginizer just couldn't get the running game going, and pretty much relied solely on Garcia and the passing game to guide the Browns.  And then... BAM!  Garcia gets sacked by Mr. Washington, and comes up injured.  The pass completions came at a slightly decreased rate at this point, and the Browns just couldn't finish it out.  Suggs was pretty much held useless.

Some funny things about the postgame were that Denoginizer completely owned the statbook.  It wasn't even really close. He had to have more first downs in the 1st quarter than i had in the entire game.  No, I am serious.   :?  A few big plays helped me out immensely.

I had the ball so little, I can't even really remember any drives other than the first one.  I know Wheatley did allright.  He never gained more than 5 yards on an individual carry, but he was pretty consistant.  Gannon scrambled for a few big plays when I saw how Denoginizer completely blanketed my receivers.  I also know I got alot of defensive practice!!!!  I don't know if it helped... but I got the practice.   Tongue

It was a really fun game to play though.  There is nothing like playing with cool people that you "know".  I have a feeling I won't be so lucky the next time we play, but I will gladly take my 1-0 online record and brag about it to Devil when he gets back!

Raider Nation is alive and well!

Great game Denoginizer.  I had a blast.

Our Team Requests thread is getting a bit cramped, so...

Let's start, as I have lots of thoughts running around in my mostly empty head...

What I have done:  (Xbox version).  Played 2 single player games against A.I.  Played 2 single player games with my brother (co-op) against the A.I.  Played 1/2 of online game until Panzergeist had to quit for some reason.  All games played were on default All-Pro.  Started a Franchise.  Messed with every menu I could find.  Ran through all tutorials.

Initial Thougths:  Well, as far as the menus go, my initial thoughts were actually, "I am lost".  After understanding where most things are now, I think they are organized pretty well.  It took me almost 5 minutes to figure out how to accept Panzergeist's invite to his game, and I still have to search for things on occasion, but other than that, I am liking them.  Once I got into the game, my feelings on the graphics being "ultra-better" are really kinda mixed.  On first blush, they didn't seem too much better.  Those thoughts have since changed for the better.  After playing my first quarter, I thought I was going to hate the game.  It actually reminded me of Madden a little bit, and you know how I feel about that engine.  I have since warmed up to it alot.

Graphic/Animation Thoughts:  Let me start by saying the game 'looks' better than last year on the whole.  I don't see how anyone can deny this.  There are some areas where the game looks marginally better, and others where it appears to look significantly better.  But let's face it, 2k4 looked pretty darn good.  Some of the uniforms are just outstanding this year though.  Just check out the Falcons Away jerseys if you want to know what I'm talking about.  The animations, on the whole, are flat out brilliant.  Some quick things that come to mind are the throwing arcs of the football, the tackling (both individual and gang), the defensive backs interception animations, the juke moves, and the QB scrambling and sliding.  On the other hand, there are some things I have noticed I don't like.  Some of the animations are extremely rushed (at times) and look downright stupid.  When a running back gets pushed from behind sometimes by a Linebacker, through a hole, it can look like you just hit fast forward on a vcr.  There is slowdown on some of the overlays.  Someone at OpSports pointed this out and got nearly crucified for stating it.  Guess what?  He is right.  Is it a gamebreaker... of course not, and honestly, you get used to it  to the point where you hardly notice, but it IS there.  Some of the QB short throws look off also.  All in all though, a big, big improvement.  I am overthrowing Rice so often, his old slow ass is diving all over the field trying to make receptions for me... looks great!

Franchise Thoughts:  Basically, all I did was start one up so I could see the menus, and then try out Team Prep.  I love the new Contracts screen.  Charles Woodson is on drugs for what he wants after his current contract expires, but other than that, it looks like managing your salary cap is going to be a ton of fun this season.     My initial thoughts on Team Prep (my most anticipated feature) are as follows:  Are you kidding me!!!!!  I fooled around with this thing for about 20 minutes, and didn't even get to Wednesday!!!!  Could they have made it any more ridiculously overwhelming!!!  Now, the GREAT news is, it will save your day-to-day template after the initial work is done.  But Lord in Heaven, it will take me HOURS to set up one week.  I really think it will take some time to evaluate this feature, and I have high hopes for it... but my initial thoughts are that it is a monstrous time-sink.  (and I don't want to hear, "I told you so" Fox... so don't even go there).

Gameplay Thoughts:  Oh man.  Let me keep this short, or it will go on for pages.  For the most part, it is much, much, much better than last year.  And you guys spouting off how it hasn't changed much... are you seriously high when you say things like that?  It is insanely different.  The momentum alone makes it a different game entirely.  Maybe I am just a very deliberate player or something, cause the gameplay is way different to me.  Rather than go into a 5 page discertation on it, let me just say that everything feels more "realistic", if I can use that term for video football.  The stats I have gotten are IMMEASURABLY more real than anything I got last year, and that is almost completely due to the running game being reigned in, and the Defensive Line not being worthless this year.  Good teams are easier to play as than bad ones.  They are also harder to beat than poor ones.  I have lost 1 out of 5 games.  That loss was to the Falcons (in Atlanta), against the A.I., and Warrick Dunn used that turf to break away from me numerous times.  I got spanked.  I then played them in Oakland (rematch) on grass.  I contained him much better!  There IS a difference of player speed on different surfaces. QB scrambling with Donovan will be fun for Eagles players.  I know I enjoyed it while playing with my brother.  The Defensive End Speed Rush has been addressed.  Sacks will come by better play-calling now, rather than great thumb jockeys.  Defensive Backs can be awesome or clueless.  I have seen evidence of both.  More to come on that later.  My biggest concern right now (by far) is the button layout and the time you have to adjust your defense before the A.I. snaps the ball.  This one thing alone is INFURIATING.  I barely have time to move the linebackers and then call a double team, and the ball is hiked.  Forget adjusting my o-line, spying the QB (still can't figure out how to make this work), and picking the player I want.  I think I will need to prioritize, and choose what is most important.  But when you play with/against me, you will see I have my players moving all over the damn place before the ball is snapped.  I don't have time to get it all done this year, and I am constantly hitting the wrong buttons to zoom out, and switch players, etc... etc...  Oh, one neat thing is I am getting very close to blocking punts.  Never could even get close before.

Sound Thoughts:  I haven't messed with the music.  I have noticed that Dan and Peter are a bit wonky this year.  They will stop their sentences mid-thought from time to time.  They will fall behind the action (noticably) from time to time.  Berman, when doing his game reviews, will absolutely screw up and sound ridiculous from time to time.  Sounds negative huh?  Nah... I am just nitpicky about commentating and stuff.  All told it is great.  But don't expect perfection, it ain't happenin'.  Oh and the Suzy interviews... waste of disc space imo.

Overall Thoughts:  The game kicks butt.  I am very critical of VC and Sega Sports games, which is why I said alot of negative things, but don't think I'm down on the game.  It is much better, (and more difficult in some ways) than 2k4.  I am really liking it in general.  I have a tremendous amount of stuff to get used to.  I am fumbling for buttons all over the place right now.  That should get better.  The #1 thing I don't like I have stated.  The #1 thing I do like is the way the game plays a more realistic game of football.  My stats have been fantastic.  No complaints at all with the possible exception of too many interceptions for me against the A.I.  Too early to tell, but I know I'm not THAT good of a def. coord.

More later.  These are all very early thoughts and are subject to change.  Don't be surprised to find game bugs either... they added a crapload of new features, and with new features come bugs, there is no way around it.  Let's hope they are not significant.  You can be certain as I find them, I will tell you about it.  I love to praise VC, I also love to rip 'em!

I saw a bunch of you guys online last night.  It was cool.  The only online game I played, I was winning 17-0 against Panzergeist early in the 2nd quarter I think.  I took the Raiders, he took the Bucs.  I got lucky with a couple break-away plays and an interception for a TD.  The voice wasn't working, so we couldn't talk.  He left the game rather abrubptly though, so I figure he was either pissed off, or had to leave for some reason.  Anyway, I look forward to evaluating online play further.  I hope it' not a scoring fest though, I'll tell you that.

Thanks Hetz and Denog.  You guys are doing great.

The only disheartening thing is hearing how hard it is to run against the Eagles.... not from a "realism" standpoint mind you, but from a "I've got to listen to Devil gloat when Wheatley gets stuffed" standpoint.

Also, I have read that defenses are disguised better this year, not that I am any good at 'reading defenses' anyway, but do you guys concur with the defenses being harder to figure out this year?

Let me know if anyone is willing to play some multiplayer over the next few days... I have to prepare for His Dorkness to return from vacation.

Honestly, he may decide he doesn't want to commit to a long season anyway, who knows.

I'm thinking maybe we should do both, considering not everyone will want to commit to an entire season.  Some people want to play online against people they know, but they don't have the time for a full blown league.

Maybe that is where a tournament comes in.

Eco - Regarding when to start...  My advice (and this is only advice) would be to let everyone get their feet wet with the game.  After all, there is always a chance a few people won't like the way it plays, and will then be very uncommitted to the league, something we can't afford.   If people have time to play and evaluate the game, and then decide to "back out", it won't hurt the league at all, cause we will have waited to actually start it.

Just a suggestion.

I was so hoping that KD or AF would have this ready for the sports season.  Alas, they are probably busy with more important things.

Anyway, don't forget to check the General Gaming Forum here at CG or the extensive thread at GG for a list of livetags.

I know I have some work to do on my friends list before the season begins.  I have not been on Live in quite some time.

I am all over this.

This whole league thing is just way too cool NOT to be committed!

Thanks Eco!

So, in glancing over those screenshots a bit more, do you guys think that EACH Tournament/League is going to have it's own Stats Central type thing/page?

If "Yes", then will these stats be automatically updated after each XBLive game that we play?

It also looks like the "Administrator" or whatever they call it is going to have a place to type in News of the Week, and Messages, and all kinds of stuff.  I mean, am I seeing that right?

I'm not sure I get it.  Can someone better explain it to me?

This just seems... I am sitting here thinking of a word, and I can't.  Well, for lack of a better word, it seems unbelievable.

Other than writing up some news stories and from what I understand, approving trades, what does the administrator have to do?  It appears to be fully automized.

I mean, c'mon.  This is unreal.  If I am interpreting these screen shots correctly, then it appears the toughest thing to actually do would be to schedule and play your actual game!  (not that that can't be incredibly difficult with our group, cause we all know it is).

Man, I am really going to feel like a jerk if I miss a gametime this season.

Is it going to work like Links, where you have X days to play your game, and then after you play, you are "clear" until your next scheduled game?

I need to go read some more, but if anyone knows anything, and it isn't too difficult to type, can you help me out here; because honestly, I am not trying to up the hype-meter here, I just don't see how something this huge is getting overshadowed by some of the other features.

Thanks.

This is pretty cool.

And remember, if you find the game too hard, and are feeling depressed about your skills:

Just look for Lockdown and then hit Press 'x' to download VIP file.

All your depression will soon go away.  I can make anyone look good!

I think the site looks great!

Of course, I tried learning HTML and all that stuff at one point, and I crashed pretty bad.

So I hold mucho respect for anyone that can do this kind of thing.

Stiffler -  Funny post.

I saw an interview she did right after Pirates came out.  She mentions the fact that she was not well endowed up top.  She was actually quite funny about it, stating that she wondered if that would ever change.

I could tell her right now the answer is "No" unless she decides to either put on some weight or get some fakes.

Personally, I still think she is gorgeous.

She seems like a pretty cool person actually.

Thanks Eco.

For anyone interested:  There are some new video clips up at OpSports.  My particular favorite is Video Clip #8 or #9.  Whichever is the first one recorded on the 16th, I don't remember now.  (I do know it's a Broncos game).

The flow of the game is perfect.

The offensive as well as the defensive gameplay is mind-blowing.

The computer making some very nice adjustments before the ball is hiked is also great to see.

The tackling is just outstanding.

It appears that if you have the right people in the right place this year, you will be rewarded.  IE: Not as many missed tackles on defense, and some very very nice offensive line A.I.

Another thing I noticed in watching all the videos:  When a pass is thrown up to a good receiver with a db (or multiple db's) in good position, you really have no clue what the outcome is going to be.  I have seen great catches, knockdowns, and interceptions.  This is encouraging.

I am still holding my breath on some of the "other" features, but as far as gameplay goes, it certainly appears to be brilliant!

We do not have long to wait!  If you guys are halfas excited as me, you must be on the edge of your seats awaiting this one!

I might actually buy this game.

It would be the first RPG I have ever bought for a console if I do.

Hmmm... branching out from sports titles... how interesting that would be.
