I'm going to dog them for their DRM, so one more semi-negative review on the pyre. smile

I would rather read a professional review that rates a game on the game play, not the copy protection. It should be a huge note, but I don't think it should effect the score. I don't read game reviews to tell me what they think of the copy protection.

Do a separate article on the CP and then link in game reviews that use that protection would be my suggestion.

2363  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is There Hope for Metallica? on: September 11, 2008, 11:53:32 PM
I will admit the guitar and drums sound a bit more like old Metallica, but the singing is completely ruining it. Hetfields voice just doesn't work for me. The chorus's sound awkward and completely out of place with the music. He sounds nothing like Justice, and I am a bit shock that the comparison is even being made. The more I hear the new stuff (local radio is playing the crap out of it) the more I hate it. Despise it even.

Metallica died after Justice, they will never come back, and this newest attempt isn't even close.

Congrats. Who did you use?

Last year I decided it was about time I got rid of my debt, but I couldn't find anyone willing to give me a loan for that much thanks to my credit (which isn't horrible, but not good either). I finally took one of those pre-approved credit cards earlier this year with no interest for 9 months and started putting every spare dime towards my cards. All my credit card debt will be gone in about a year at this point. Pretty thrilled about it, just wish it didn't take me 15 years to grow up and solve the issue.

I'm not sure if this is true, but if you follow some of the posts by the devs in the original link, they say that the used activation is released once you uninstall the game with an active internet connection, as opposed to something like Mass Effect where you only get three activations ever.

It's not "ever". Its you call and ask them to reset it once you surpass the 5 installs. All they are doing is making sure you aren't going out and doing 10 installs in a 6 month period. By the time EA goes out of business and their servers disappear you won't be able to play the game on whatever OS is current anyway. Plus I would think they would remove the limit once the game is past its prime (like OOTP does I believe).
2366  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DRM] Red Alert 3's DRM crapola revealed on: September 11, 2008, 03:50:50 AM
Doesn't bug me at all. Two three years down the line I have no problem with calling and asking them to reset my installs. When they are no longer making much, if any money on the game anymore I doubt they will put up much of a fight. Not to mention a few years down the road it will probably be more of an issue of getting the game to run on the newest OS more than anything else.

Even with Vista I have had issues with my install. It's a pain in the ass, but MS gave me a new code to validate my install.

I can live with it.

Heard a Metallica song on the radio today. Thought it was pretty good, not great, but sounded much more like old Metallica. Maybe I will buy the new album I was thinking. Turns out it was "My Friend of Misery" on the Black album. Guess it has been so long since I listened to that album I forgot about the song. icon_redface

Dang it, I really want to like Metallica again too, but so far the new stuff I have heard has been very blah and nothing I would buy.

Like I said above, no problems here, but I really don't know much about it. There are different versions and I think Spore has the same version as Mass Effect. (Bioshock used an earlier version and that didn't break anything on my PC.) Maybe read up on the PC version of ME and see if people had problems. I saw one guy on XSpore say it screwed up his "sisters" computer, but who knows.

Nope, no CD required.

Sounds like I have played about as much as you (about to get back into it) and agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. Very impressed so far, it's what I expected.

Edit: I already have SecruRom from Bioshock I believe. Anyway, I didn't see any mention of it during install and my computer is running fine. Wasn't worried about it though either.

Fidget has some screen shots of Populous DS. I love the idea, but I am not sure if I like what I am seeing so far. I think the screen is going to be too small to really enjoy it. Then again Populous showed a very small amount of land too, so either it won't be a big deal or it will show that the interface is way too outdated.

I dunno, I was worried that the creature editor IS the game and it seems to be the case - everything else is simplistic, repetitive and shalow.

I am not sure for how long creating all kinds of whacky stuff is going to remain fun. The game doesn't sound like it's worth its full price, might as well buy the Creature Creator for $9 and use it ad naseum.

That isn't what the reviews are saying, but that seems to be some of the user impressions. It could very well be another B&W I guess.

As someone who spends a couple of thousand, at least, with Amazon every year this doesn't bother me at all. I have almost always found Amazon to be cheaper than most other places, especially brick and mortar stores. Even when they aren't cheaper, with shipping/tax they are less expensive (Prime member). Any time I've pre-ordered a game from Amazon, it's arrived at my workplace on release day.  I've been able to take them home and play them just as quickly as if I'd downloaded them - quicker in fact, since installing from a disc is quicker than downloading.  I can't imagine switching to downloading games any time soon.  Besides, I like shiny boxes and not having to print out manuals. smile

I have it pre-ordered from Amazon too, but I just realized it comes out on a Sunday. Amazon won't ship until Monday so you will get it Tuesday at the earliest. I think I will just go to Wal-mart Saturday at Midnight or Target as they open Sunday. Guessing there will be hundreds of copies every where so it won't be hard to find.

I would just get the download if they gave you the option to get the game in the mail in addition to the download. Doesn't appear they give you that option though.

Playing with the idea of getting the CE because the 100 page guide could be interesting, as does the documentary.

It's pretty clear they are going to start working on the game once the MoM clone is done, right now it's just an idea in their heads.

And this is a non story. 2 years before we see a new GalCiv? That sounds just about right, it took 3 years between 1 and 2 and they weren't planning another major release in between. The real news here is that the MoM clone will be out in the next couple of years, hopefully next.

No they weren't, but the Merc 2 thread is a silly place for that. My point was that even the anti-hype is building hype for the game. People are talking about it, even if it's to say "I don't care".

I would have thought that they would focus on hyping the game portions more than the creature creator.

They have released all sorts of movies and previews about the game part. The latest are all about the game. The creator just got so much attention because they released a demo and people went crazy with it (because it is pretty neat regardless of the game). The hype is by the fan base, not so much the company IMO. Just look at the Merc 2 thread. Someone had to make a big deal out of Spore when there was no need to. Then everyone had to jump in and say they weren't interested adding to the hype (why do so many people feel they need to state they don't care, what is this game?). Overly excited people are creating the hype, otherwise the gameplay movies and screenshots they release (like almost all companies do) wouldn't be such a big deal.
